So I was doom scrolling on Pinterest when this ad started up on the side. It caught my eye and didn't immediately look like an ad so I was watching it. It was a gender reveal party and the couple both set off these stick smoke bombs that are supposed to be either pink or blue smoke, yadda yadda.

Then out comes black smoke and they're all confused. So I vaguely think like it's a prank or a defect, whatever, I'm bored, moving on... When the people start panicking and the smoke is choking them out!

So at this point, it's obviously an add, but I'm just kind of stunned at how serious they're trying to make it look because honestly WTF?

THEN THIS PRIEST COMES OUT OF NO WHERE AND STALKS TOWARDS THE CAMERA AND TURNS IT OFF ALL SERIOUS AND SHIT AND ITS LIKE

My extremely cold take is that, while the option to play a woman is very cool and the sole reason I got into Mass Effect, and while her performance is considered by many to be superior, Femshep herself is not a Strong Female Character. When people include her in various Favorite Female Characters lists and such, I have to wonder if they’re mainly talking about the character that exists in their head.

At the very least, when discussing the fleshed out female characters of the series, to dismiss the other human women, including the sole Latina, to prop up the usually white readhead Jane. It’s not a very Girl’s Girl attitude.

really love alternating between girls to the front and listening to washed up emo episodes. to me it so clearly demonstrates a lot of the friction btw the nebulous diy posthardcore/pre-midwest emo conglomerate and riot grrl is often a matter of like. basic difference in musical ideology and subculture values lmao. like. this guy from art monk was talking about how some of his friends bands have been forgotten because a lot of the scene was v. humble and believed in letting the music speak for itself which imo fits with a lot of women in these bands who talk about wanting to be seen as "serious artists" not bc women arent "serious" but rather its emblematic of the type of band/music relationality they want to embody. like. the women in these scenes, to varying degrees, certainly interacted and invested in the same values as their peers- its weird to imagine just bc they are women that (1) they all should think the same and (2) they all felt inherently isolated from their communities??

Barbie to me is just a hot pink confection for enjoyment, where I’m pleasantly surprised they were able to squeeze a bit of empowerment narrative out of it. We’ll see how I feel once it’s out.

that's how i feel too. i understand why people do not want to interact with the criticism, especially when you just want to enjoy the movie as entertainment. i get it, i really do. and also i'm sure there's a lot of critics out there being superior about how ~you can't call yourself a feminist if you watch the barbie movie~ or something (i don't agree with this take, for the record.)

but personally, i do find it interesting to place barbie - as a doll, and a societal icon - in context of the world we live in. it has a pretty distinctly non-feminist history given the body proportions and how they represented an 'ideal' female form - mattel has responded in the last 10 years by releasing other body sizes, but they still don't represent the average american woman (and i believe the same can be said about ken.)

i think the saddest reaction i've been seeing is that it's misogynistic to point any of this out. there's that kinda viral tumblr post going around about how no one criticizes the marvel movies this hard but like... marvel films being military propaganda is discussed quite frequently, maybe not by npr, but like, for sure on other parts of the internet.

and this is what i mean by half-baked discussions because if you aren't clued in to anti-imperalism then maybe the marvel discourse never found you. but if we want to talk misogyny and patriarchy, then imo we'd be better off discussing why society talks more freely about women's body image re: barbie, but not men's body image, which is also negatively impacted by action figures and marvel actors 'roiding up and acting like they gained their figures with exercise.

like if you find the barbie criticism uncomfortable, and maybe chewed on why that is, and thought about what the criticism should actually be... i think all of these conversations would be way better.

i don't think you need to chew on the criticism to simply enjoy a film. but idk if you're gonna critique or critique the critiques then i wish it was all a little more fully baked, i guess.

I don’t have anything to say about it that other girlies haven’t but that one post complaining about trans women making egg jokes is irritating and I’m sick of seeing it. The one that’s like “"you are a girl, an egg waiting to crack and that’s ok" how about you are a boy and a man” likeeee. So this post isn’t really about egg jokes after all it’s about trans women trying to tell people it’s okay to be trans women. That’s what you think is bad and you think it’s more appropriate to stubbornly reaffirm cis men’s manhood. Good to know
