Da Qing is a cat in the same sense a dolphin is a fish: superficially, the shape fits the description, but once you take a closer look you realize they're something else entirely.

Zhao Yunlan had grown used to Da Qing's… otherness. If sometimes he happened to be floating in space, well, Zhao Yunlan could admit that their shared apartment had grown quite cluttered and it was hard for the cat to find a place to curl up. And if Da Qing sometimes opened his maw unnaturally wide, that was a sure sign that Zhao Yunlan had skipped too many meals and thus forgot to feed him. The many eyes watching him during the night might've been eerie if he didn't know it was just Da Qing, sulking because Zhao Yunlan ignored his loud demands for the truly expensive fish in favour of a tin of tuna.

Most people couldn't even see this Other quality to Da Qing, to them he was just a regular if particularly round cat.

Zhao Yunlan, however, was one of those rare humans with the gift to pierce the veil, to peek beyond and catch a glimpse of the truth without running the risk of losing his sanity. Void-touched, they named him. Perceptive, Zhao Yunlan called it with half a shrug and not a care in the world. Unlike others with the gift, he hadn't had a run-in with something from beyond to open his mind and leave him mildly traumatized. He'd always been able to see them, ever since he was a child, and hadn't realized how unusual this was until he brought Da Qing home. His parents weren't gifted and couldn't hear Da Qing talk, just thought their son precocious for his insistence that he could translate for the cat.

By the time Zhao Yunlan joined the police academy, he knew better than to give himself away. To his surprise, they tested people for their ability to interact with the void, and Zhao Yunlan blew their tests out of the water. They ended up fast-tracking him through the program to get him out there quickly, gain experience in the field. With the weird cases that followed, book smarts could only help so much. The void-touched were intuitive learners, or so the common wisdom went. Zhao Yunlan definitely proved himself to be one.

At twenty-five, he became the youngest person to head a department, the elite supernatural investigative unit in charge of the weirdest cases.

The SID was filled with those who understood the void to some degree:

Zhu Hong was descended from one of the Old Ones, as they were called. Great eldritch entities that sometimes took interest in the human world and left something of themselves behind. Her abilities were diluted, each generation born less powerful. However, unlike her cousins Zhu Hong had the misfortune of being born with a snake tail, and no effort on her part managed to transform it into human legs. Hence why she let herself be recruited by the SID as an administrator.

Wang Zheng had the singular distinction of having gained her void sense while already working for the SID; as a secretary her sensitivity hadn't been deemed of any importance. However, the cases the SID handled were often dangerous, and as such Wang Zheng had an unfortunate encounter that left her mind blown wide open and clinging to the shreds of her sanity. She ended up with more memories than her own, foremost amongst them of a young, long-dead girl named Gelan, to the point where sometimes she couldn't tell who she truly was: Gelan or Wang Zheng.

Chu Shuzhi, on the other hand, had touched the void of his own volition. Rare were the cases where someone ordinary could manipulate the void, and Chu Shuzhi managed it with surprising skill. He'd been caught red-handed by the previous chief, but with his rare talents, his sentence was amended to community service, as long as he agreed to serve the SID and its purpose. He had yet to divulge to anyone how he managed the feat, the only thing the department managed to rule out was eldritch ancestry: no drop of void-stained blood ran through Chu Shuzhi's veins.

Lin Jing was void-touched like Zhao Yunlan, but more importantly he was a coward. His void-sense was barely developed, and yet what he'd glimpsed scared him badly enough to derail his entire life. He worked at the SID because they were the only organisation willing to fund his research, mixing traditional wards and talismans with cutting edge technology to detect and defend against the Void and its denizens.

Guo Changcheng seemed like a bureaucratic mistake, but he integrated surprisingly well with the rest of the team. In the end, Zhao Yunlan never got around to filing for a transfer.

They were only called in if a case had that sense of something being off, some unnatural occurrences or inexplicable circumstances. Like the murder of Lu Ruomei. Officially, her death would be put down as mauled by errant wildlife, but Zhao Yunlan knew the moment he entered the crime scene that she was killed by something else, void clinging to the walls of the hutong like drifting wisps of smoke.

More importantly, there was a distinct lack of clingy shadows surrounding the young, attractive professor who was lurking near the crime scene. How very suspicious.

"Lu Ruomei was one of my students," the professor said, his earnest voice at odds with his intent gaze drilling straight to the core of Zhao Yunlan. "I hope Chief Zhao can bring her murderer to justice soon."

"How well did you know your student?" Zhao Yunlan twirled his lollipop and delighted in the way Professor Shen's eyes followed the candy as it vanished into Zhao Yunlan's mouth. "Did she have any enemies?"

"She was polite and very punctual, never turned in an assignment late. Her handwriting was very tidy," Professor Shen offered, his glasses gleaming with the secrets they hid. Needless to say, Zhao Yunlan was intrigued. "You should speak to the class president and my TA, they might know more."

And yet, Professor Shen kept turning up during the investigation and after. He seemed to be everywhere Zhao Yunlan looked. Very suspicious. Perhaps Zhao Yunlan should investigate him, and his well-tailored suits, so tight they seemed painted on.

"Professor Shen is dangerous," Da Qing declared ominously, giving Zhao Yunlan the stink-eye. "Better stay out of his way."

"Is he, now," Zhao Yunlan murmured, staring after the professor with a gleam in his eye. Da Qing huffed, swiping at him with an ephemeral claw in reprimand. Zhao Yunlan didn't bother to duck.

I LOVE their dynamic so much it's not even FUNNY

Please don't kick me out of the Chenford fandom.

But with all the Gelan/Nolgen shipping going on, I would like to put forward my two cents. I have listed a few reasons below on why I like Bailan:

1. I just love the trio that consists of Bailan & Celina. Bailan have almost adopted Celina and their interactions are cute and funny. They make a perfect "found family" just like Chenford and Tamara. (I would say even more so than the latter. Because Lucy is more like an elder sister to Tamara.)

2. Bailan have stopped grossing me out with their overtly immature sexual talks (I am no prude or anything, but I was not a fan of season 4 Bailan's talks).

3. Though Bailey is way out of Nolan's league yet they kinda complete each other. Bailey compensates for Nolan's cluelessness as she is shown as more of a sorted character.

4. Season 5 Bailey is not a superhero, she is more human.

5. Bailey's heartfelt proposal on episode 5X05 left me in tears. Yes, I am a sucker for relationships where the ladies taking the charge. Bailey deserves to be happy and if she found it in Nolan, i want her to have it. Seeing her take that step in spite of her traumatic past is a good message as it gives hope. 😇

6. Finally my ulterior motive is to see our Smitten Kittens (Chenford) dance on Bailan's wedding as a committed couple without any pretence of "owing each other dances".😌
