sighthounds !
(first post, woohoo) here's a brief overview on sighthounds! the silly guys :]
ID: a borzoi running; they have long legs and long, white fur. /end ID
these are dogs that are used to hunt prey by sight
they're usually slender and elongated, and are very good at running
they are the oldest type of purebred dog
they also have several other names, including: gazehounds, windhounds, and greyhounds (this one is outdated; it used to refer to the whole group of sighthounds, but it now restricted to only a few breeds
there are around 53 sighthound breeds, with half of them originating in africa, asia, and the mediterranean region
sighthounds hunt in two different ways: 1. chase + catch + kill, 2. chase + catch + secure (without killing) due to religious traditions that require game to be killed in a ritual manner in order to be eaten
they have good vision
usually calm, sociable, and sensitive, + they typically aren't barkers
some popular sighthounds include: greyhounds, borzois, whippets, afghan hounds, and irish wolfhounds
they are used a lot in coursing (prey chasing competitions) and racing sports
very strong prey drive, as do most sporting dogs
ID: brindle and white whippet standing still, facing right. /end ID
#dogs#sighthound#greyhound#whippet#dog facts#animals#gazehound is such a pretty name for them ......

Why would anyone get an unethical wolfdog when they could spend their money on a 100% dog gazehound?

btw its kinda weird to have an uncommon breed of a common kintype. you search for "catkin" tag and it full of cats but none of them are close to your longmuzzled longlegged type("oriental cat kin/therian" tag is usually not used). theres no way you find a toy of your type, the best they have is some siamese cats(usually with too short face and too chunky legs). and sometimes its a color. i didnt think that black&white cats are unpopular until i searched for something close to me. and all the cat colors i sea are usually tabby, white or black. unccommon animal kintype is searching for it and find nothing, and uncommon breed kintype is searching for it and find a lot of things and none of them are for you.
the same is for my dogkin btw. gazehounds are nothing like your usual shepherds, hounds or terriers at all. and gazehounds are usually forgotten or ignored and presented only as a jokes about weird borzoi pics.
im not like other cats, im not like other dogs and im serious about it
(not blaming or kinshaming anyone, just ramblin' n grumblin')

Silken Windhound
Dog breed
A Silken Windhound.
The Silken Windhound is an American breed of sighthound. Like most sighthounds, Silkens are noted coursers.

Sighthound
Sighthounds, also called gazehounds, are a type of dog, hounds that hunt primarily by sight and speed rather than by scent and endurance as scent hounds do

Dog
The dog is a domesticated descendant of the wolf. Also called the domestic dog, it is derived from extinct Pleistocene wolves, and the modern wolf is the dog's nearest living relative. The dog was the first species to be domesticated by humans.
Lifespan: 10 – 13 years, Domain: Eukaryota, Family: Canidae, Kingdom: Animalia, Order: Carnivora, Phylum: Chordata

Dog Breeds
People have been breeding dogs since prehistoric times. The earliest dog breeders used wolves to create domestic dogs. From the beginning, humans purposefully bred dogs to perform various tasks. Hunting, guarding, and herding are thought to be among the earliest jobs eagerly performed by the animal destined to be called “man’s best friend.”
For thousands of years, humans bred dogs toward the physical and mental traits best suited for the work expected of them. The sleek Greyhound types bred to chase fleet-footed prey, and the huge mastiff types used as guard dogs and warriors, are two ancient examples of dogs bred for specific jobs.
As humans became more sophisticated, so did their dogs. Eventually, there emerged specific breeds of dogs, custom-bred to suit the breeders’ local needs and circumstances. The Greyhound, for instance, was the foundation type for the immense Irish Wolfhound and the dainty Italian Greyhound. All three have a distinct family resemblance, but you’d never mistake one for another.
So, then, when is a breed a breed and not just a kind or type of dog? The simplest way to define a breed is to say it always “breeds true.” That is, breeding a purebred Irish Setter to another purebred Irish Setter will always produce dogs instantly recognizable as Irish Setters.
Each breed’s ideal physical traits, movement, and temperament are set down in a written document called a “breed standard.” For example, the breed standard sets forth the traits that make a Cocker Spaniel a Cocker Spaniel and not a Springer Spaniel.
The AKC standard for each breed originates with a “parent club,” the AKC-recognized national club devoted to a particular breed. Once approved by the AKC, a standard becomes both the breeder’s “blueprint” and the instrument used by dog show judges to evaluate a breeder’s work.
There are over 340 dog breeds known throughout the world. The American Kennel Club recognizes 200 breed

I'm sure you've already answered this but is Machete styled after a silken windhound? He is so very shaped
His breed is fictional, but it closely resembles modern day Ibizan hound. Both Silkens and Ibizans are sighthounds though, so you're not far off.

Hahahahaha ... after I was ragging on Raymond Coppinger's absolutism about livestock guardian dogs not having a predatory drive: CW: hunting, wolf-hunting, subsistence pastoralism, coursing
— Arakchaa, Tayana. "Reindeer, dogs, and horses among the Tozhu reindeer herder-hunters in the Siberian taiga" [PDF, 16.51 MB]. University of Alaska Fairbanks (December 2018): 150 - 151. Retrieved July 11, 2023. Archived from the original on October 6, 2022 via Wayback Machine. Taigan, a type of gazehound similar to tazi and saluki, livestock guardian dog and laika are all mentioned in that dissertation, by the way.

The hunter’s pursuit of the quarry mirrors Fate’s pursuit of both humans and nonhumans and highlights the ambiguity of the encounter. With breathtaking descriptions of falcons, gazelles, and saluki gazehounds, the artist captures the drama and tension of the hunt…

Any of the sighthound or gazehound bred here domestically. Don't live anywhere where it's safe to let them free-run. Read too many horror stories about dogs running into trees. Maybe could take a COO dog, because dogs from their country-of-origin tend to be better offleash [Wayback Machine, archive.today]. Especially ones originating from areas bordering the taiga or from the mountainous ranges. Someone once offered a Taigan in exchange for an antique, but didn't take them up on the offer. Sometimes a friend tell me stories about their COO Tazi free-running in the boreal forests and kick myself for not taking that Taigan offer. But in retrospect, it's the right decision to make since I wasn't in a position to have a dog at the time.
What's a breed that you adore aesthetically but sadly just doesn't fit your life otherwise

Number 146, the Hungarian Greyhound.
The name of this breed is a bit of a misnomer, as it is not a greyhound.
A more proper name would be sighthound or gazehound.
The breed is used for hunting fast prey.
