Queer Advice for the Gaybies: Labels

My best life advice is that if you live in a place with a lot of organized religion and politics, leave it and go somewhere where people are themselves and where you can explore without unnecessary boundaries when you get the chance and see where that gets you. I've always loved a label that is specific more than a blanket term but blanket terms can be helpful when you're first gaining your confidence. Also, some people swear by blanket terms. And I use the word queer more often than demi by 10000000x % because I love it. It's a specific word that speaks to me from a long and ancient history, a word that has been reformed, a word that is controversial. A word that speaks to my favorite theorists like Audre Lorde but also to our whole community. If gay is your word, gay is your word. To me, gay is something I often call myself when I'm screaming on rooftops at midnight or walking down the street. It's casual, it's fun, it's exciting. Sapphic I feel is very similar to queer. The word ace has scared and delighted me both, it makes me feel insecure at times and at other times like the greatest person alive. Demi makes me feel silly often, like an English Rose in the book by Madonna. You own your words and you decide how to use them.
