I just had a full 15 minute argument with my brother about whether bucky barnes is gay and defending stucky (stucky isn't even my favourite ship) and I told him about the 66,000+ stucky fanfics on ao3 and he still dosent beleive me.
his main argument was "rewatch the first captain America movie bucky is notoriously straight" and my argument was "rewatch the first captain America movie, bucky is not notoriously straight"

What are some "problematic" ships you like?
do you really want to know because I have some really problematic ships? If so I'll tell you. A lot of them have age differences. Sometimes big ones. A lot of them are with evil people. And a lot of them aren't straight. And lot of them are just plain, well taboo. This will probably be long so stop reading if you don't want to read an essay.
My problematic ships:
Tumblr media
Roy Mustang x Edward Elric Fullmetal Alchemist: ok really problematic straight out of the gate. Not only because of age difference but also because Roy Mustang is technically Ed's boss/superior officer in the military. Not that Ed fully listens to everything Roy says. And Roy constantly teases him about it. Roy is also snake but someone trying to change things for the better. He's also has done a lot of bad things. But so has Ed. They are both to messed up people trying to fix things they've done wrong and they are both intimately aware of that about each other. They both are incredibly brilliant and have in common the type of powers they use. You need to watch Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 to understand(not brotherhood. 2003 first) they are not canon but the canon ships bore me and lack any real romance so there you go.
Tumblr media
Luz Noceda x Philip Wittebane: I know I know! This one is really fucked up. So fucked up. And Lunter is my otp. Believe me I know. But I have a dark fascination for this ship. Especially considering every interaction Luz and Philip had. And how much they have in common.. Like this my go to ship for when I want angst and trauma and just to see a dumpster fire. When I want Luz angst. I love Lunter. If Lunter is my happy ending, this ship is if I want tragedy and bad endings. This my depression ship!
Tumblr media
Zuko x Happiness avatar the last airbender(anyone who is not Mai because she honestly sucked.) I am not a Mai fan. She is a horrible written character to me personally. And just horrible for Zuko. I mostly love any Zuko ship that has a water tribe sibling in it. But now a days that seems too toxic for people. You can look up the reasons in the anti zutara, anti zukka, anti zuko tag. But Zuko is my favorite character. Anything that gives him happiness makes me happy. Over all this mostly seems toxic because of Zukos past and family. But he had a redemption arc. One of the best. He deserves some happiness as he works hard to change things as fire lord.
Tumblr media
Lunter/Luz x Hunter: You understand this needs no explanation. You know the owl house Fandom.
Tumblr media
Dipper x Bill gravity falls: Yeah this one is really really bad. I think I have a really messed up taste for romance. Especially where age difference comes into play? Maybe I'm a masochist? Who knows. But I have a soft spot for adhd/autistic characters with older/immortal people. I have a soft spot for immortals/dangerous people protecting said autistic/adhd people.
Tumblr media
Bakudeku my hero academia : I have a soft spot for redeemed bullies who actually put in the work to change. One of my favorite movies was a walk to remember.
Just in general a running theme I seem to have in a lot of my problematic ships:
Tumblr media
age difference
Tumblr media
Gay
Tumblr media
power imbalance
Tumblr media
In love with the Bully
Tumblr media
In love with the villian
Tumblr media
And sometimes its just plain taboo, toxic, or just un healthy. But I love it!

1, 12, 18 for rottnmt? 🥺
THANK U BESTIE. giving so many fun things to think about while im at work ahahah.
1. the character everyone gets wrong
I will say i blame no one its basically a non issue but i do find evil au draxums very funny. Like! he little is a villian he DID want to destory humanity he does have a villain music number. all true. also his turning sides is s2 so. BUT ANYWAY. very funny to have him be like. evil maybe abusive dad type in aus. im sorry the guy who using 2 tiny incompetent gargoyles as henchmen/paldrons... he lets em sleep in the little dog bed..... 🥺. Hes a cartoon villian but hes got offers dental typa guy... imho.
Also personal i think these a tendacy to lean donnies personality too far in any direction. why nerf his autism swag like that... he drinks flavourless juice AND invented the messiest nasty looking sandwich ever. sometimes he does not like touch sometimes he throws his dad into the air to hug him. he has LAYERS.
LAST THING. my bro said to mention gay coded leo cause "im homophobic". jhgfdb. I just didnt read him as particularly more queer coded than his brothers.... theyre ALL a little flamboyant okaayyyyyyy. turtles are lgbtq (what all at once? yes.)
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
are there unpopular characters in rise kinda feel... not really. ILL SAY. Casey senior just cause she kinda takes the back seat after movie with casey jr..... do yall understand how many fake outs she was.... you could think shes karai due to being in the foot clan or maybe think shed get mutated into mona lisa (her voice actress played the one in 12!).
BUT NAW! angry bruser, sporty, vigilanty CASEY JONES. I love her..... also that she joins the squad cause SPLINTER. was like. oh a troubled youth... they need guidance. extremely cute. 90s movie splinter moment. based. thing we were robbed of #587. Rise casey and raph BREAKING SHIT together. as fweinds....
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
i really like thinking about the arcs we didnt get to see in unfinshed rest of season 2 and 3.... there was gonna be more mystic stuff, the family actually getting along with draxum more naturally.... GIRL TURTLES (<- dissolves into goo).
i wanna think about it. i wanna think about the raph leo becoming co leaders thing.... the showwww so so so primed for them working together and not having a direct hiercharly system fits cause this is the iteration they designed to be more like a typical family. that why splinter had a career that is not. ninja master. lol, thats why they are different ages (sorry to any quadruplets out there). and after the ages where the childhood developmental stages that are gonna favour the eldest sibling. Most siblings do not have one leader they have to listen to abt shit. [That aint a diss on how other iterations are its just a different essay lol...]
as for something that actually ended up IN the show... fav fav moment makes me cry when every i rewatch or even THINK ABOUT IT. The moment that lets Splinter reconcile the pain that the Hamato clan brought him, with the legacy, intention, and love, it was created with.
Under cut cause its some of the very last stuff that happened in the show.
The moment when Splinter's mom, (had to check ->), Atsuko shows up with the rest of the Hamato ancestors. she puts her hands next to splinter and she looks at him so so fondly and she repeats HIS action movie catch phrase. and THATS the moment Splinter, Hamato Yoshi can like. come to peace about the clans legacy.... Perfect culmination of his arc....
like it PROVES. his whole life the legacy of this clan was what was taking his family AWAY. his mom, probably his grandpa? he was suppose to let his sons GET MARTYRED. he left his family, as they had left him. but as they say anata wa hitori janai.... his mom still saw!!! HIS LIFE. his movies. Sees him as he grew, as a mutant, and the love between family is literally magic that keeps them together. THATS what Karai wanted it to be..... I jsut think we should talk about and the sad rat man healing from generation trauma. MAYBE. Cause he loves his mommy. [finally. A splinter with MOMMY ISSUES/BRICKED]

I've seen your Fuuma supremacy post on birb app (and love it!) and as a fellow Fuuma appreciator I'd like to ask you for gathering twelve reasons to why Fuuma is great / should be appreciated more~ uwu 👈
Hohoho that's an interesting one. Honestly it's a bit hard to put into words why certain character is underappreciated cuz it's hard to pinpoint what makes ppl get attached to character in the first place. But I'll try my best :D
1) honestly his early X self. He's so kind and gentle to Kotori and Kamui, very protective brother and friend. Also how soft he and Kamui are back then 🥺 and touchy feely with one another
2) speaking of early X Fuuma, just look at how gay he was for Kamui from the very start
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who the hell thinks of their friends in this shojo typical style??? With sakura petals and sparkles to the boot?? Good boy Fuuma was so head over heels for Kamui, it was adorable 😭♥️ good bf material
3) oke so onto his more complex and intriguing late X self: the enigma of what precisely happened. I've seen some people are discouraged by permanent hiatus and lack of elaboration just what happened to Fuuma. And while yes, I too would prefer if we had answered, mystery and head-scratchers are intriguing to me. I love to speculate, to analyze the possibilities with what we've been given so far. Which brings me to the next point:
4) there's more to late X Fuuma than it meets the eye. It's easy to dismiss him as sadistic without a cause villian (as he's portrayed in X anime sadly) but in manga that's far from the case. Like take this scene for example:
Tumblr media
It's true he's ruthless in fulfilling people's wishes and doing bad deeds but look at his expression. That's not face of a man who's too delighted by causing mayhem, in fact looks more saddened by the fact too many people lose sight of themselves in process of caring for their loved ones
5) his more childish/bratty side
Tumblr media
This scene in Ebisu before the destruction in vol4 for example. It was equally adorable and sinister given you know who Fuuma is but his kindness did seem genuine. Similar mischief can be seen in his interactions with Seishirou, Kakyou to some degree and sometimes when interacting with other Dragons
6) wish seeing ability and his general omnipotence. I love how he appears like personification of Judgment arcana (just taken on a darker meaning), how he can see deep inside person's heart and see what wishes dwell there. And how he delivers judgement by making those wishes reality. Tbh, I'm not trying to justify Fuuma's actions here but characters around him really do have fucked up wishes (ahem, Subaru, ahem Nataku) - X is basically a story about messed up people in messed up situations. In some lighert X AU he would have severed as a Santa claus or something but alas, X is far from light story
7) simply, these ambiguous lines
Tumblr media
Fuuma is judging others on their lack of self awareness 25/8. Add scene with Karen and that "if killing others is wrong then why do we lose sight of what's truly important" line. As well as many more. Honestly maybe it's just me, but there's something ♥️ about characters that are 'above others' but still have a weakness/vulnerability that's tying them back to same humans they're supposed to be above (in Fuuma's case that's obviously his connection to Kamui). In X it's wishes that give characters sense of humanity and will to live and Fuuma himself isn't above wishing; his wish is connected to Kamui one way or another
8) how to not mention his homoerotic courtship battles with Kamui? Iconic honestly. Where else would you get this type of content that's not a BL manga
Tumblr media
All shonen battles can go home these are only type that matter
9) oke so since since we're getting shallow for a bit: HE'S HOT AF ♥️🔥 I mean look at those evil smirks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10) I can't find a panel rn but at one point when Kamui said his wish is to bring old Fuuma back current Fuuma's eyes widened and that's the first and last time in series he appeared genuinely shocked. Which leads me to obviously question: why? Does it shock him Kamui wants other Fuuma back? Is Kamui wanting old Fuuma back somehow contradicting Fuuma's own wish (like if only way old Fuuma can come back is if Kamui were to die and Fuuma's wish is for Kamui to live)? I want to know what his wish is 🥺 I'm torn between him wanting Kamui to acknowledge his new self and wanting Kamui to start appreciating himself and wanting to live no matter what. Maybe it's both of those, maybe those wishes are connected somehow 🤔 either way it's that head-scratcher of what precisely late X Fuuma wished for that's intriguing. Maybe it's connected to old Fuuma's wish to protect Kamui but why hurt him so much then??
I need coffee for this
11) honestly, all the softer conflicting expressions he has, especially when Kamui is in question. Like this one for example
Tumblr media
So soft and torn 🥺 Imma go cry why so emotional 😭😭😭 obvs this isn't the only instance, manga is filled with those subtle scenes where he's talking to Kamui or thinking about him with rather conflicting yearning expressions
Which bring me to the last one:
12) this scene. Prediction, whatever you call it. I need to know what will happen 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Look. Fuuma is one of my fave characters so it's only natural I want to see him suffer. I need him to break down cuz of something Kamui did, or even cuz of his death. I want him to be crushed under weight of his emotions and angst 🥺🙏 Wish master who can grant anyone's wish yet there's noone to grant him his own now that Kamui is no longer alive. So my point here is that Fuuma and generally whole late X setting is perfect angst material
All in all, I guess it's Fuuma's complexity that made him one of my faves. There's way more to him than it meets the eye

I think for too long the conversation on racism has been dominated by white people because they don't want to see the reality of it being depicted by the oppressed.
For a group of people who are "obsessed" with the "truth," they sure don't want to accept that THEIR perception of the truth is skewed by their abuser tendency to make themselves the victims.
Well, sure we enslaved black people but did you know that OTHER BLACK PEOPLE sold them to us?????????? Okay but have you considered that your definition of slavery was completely different than what the rest of the world considered slavery (chattel slavery versus indentured servitude) and that doesn't excuse your ancestors from making the decision to rape, murder, cannibalize, and just do other unspeakable forms of torture to their slaves. Sure, they bought the damn people against their will but did they have to be so goddamn fucking evil about it?
The reality is in an abusive situation, the abuser ALWAYS has a justification for why their victim deserved to be hit, raped, spit on, pimped out, emotionally terrorize and even murdered. That doesn't mean that their truth is the truth of the situation. In a situation where a person is being harmed, their voice matters the most. Their truth is the reality of the situation. They didn't deserve to be raped or hit for baking the chicken wrong, no matter how much the abuser swears they did.
The same principle applies to racism. The white narrative on racism means nothing, the white opinion on black rage means nothing because you can't comprehend the psychological damage you are inflicting onto a black person, even if you're only the microaggressive type of racist (read: the caring abuser, the "I hit you to beat the gay out of you so you don't burn for eternity" abuser, the "it hurts me more than it hurts you" abuser).
That's why the scene in blank panther where Namor is called a child incapable of love is so powerful, because you are shown the scene in an unforgivable manner ON THE SIDE OF THE OPPRESSED for the first time in a way that makes it clear that there is no acceptable context for the way the white man speaks to a fucking CHILD who is defending his home from the abuse they are inflicting on his people.
There is no justification for the white man to speak to Namor in such a manner, like he's the bad guy in this situation. We are shown the reality of the situation from the side of the abused for the first time and it's uncomfortable to sit in. It should make you angry, it should radicalize you. This is how all marginalized people but especially dark skinned people are treated and have been treated for centuries and centuries. They are constantly portrayed to be the bad guy, the villian, someone who is being in a totally illogical and definitely not completely fucking understandable given the situation because they have to be. Otherwise, where does that leave us? As white people, where does centering the voices of oppressed people lead us?
It leads us scenes like the one in black panther where we have to sit in the discomfort that comes along with shame of speaking like to children, of doing much much worse in actuality. It's such a powerful metaphor for the ways in which we, as white people, are raping and killing black CHILDREN today while still justifying it to ourselves.
Well, they're savages, they're fatherless, they live in high crime neighborhoods and smoke crack and sag their pants and have curly hair and listen to rap music and sell dope to our kids and their daughters are getting knocked up like the skanks they are for welfare money from OUR HARD EARNED MONEY CAN YOU BELIEVE IT so I had to kill him, he was 13 but he was taller than me and bigger than me and darker than me and so I mistook him for a gorilla- sorry, I mean a CRIMINAL and I shot him dead in the street because I was just doing my job, I would have done the same to any white 13 year old kid if I thought they were a threat but we all know that is just subtext that ignores how the reason why 13 year old black kids are often perceived to be threats is because of their height and build but we never question WHY black kids are generally taller and bigger than white kids are (hint: it rhymes with smeeding smaves) and we ignore the history of us locking up black people for breathing wrong and then wondering why kids are growing up fatherless in crime ridden neighborhoods like we didn't make their daddies felons and banish them to a life of crime- made it legal to discriminate against them, making housing and employment impossible and wonder why they steal to live.
This post is getting off the rails but yeah, I'd like more movies like wakanda forever please. I want just black directors from now on.

09/02/2024 - 00:32am - bed ‘gay and christian”
so being gay and christian a whole ass trip. if i am being honest it’s kind of corny to even say.
i think that the christian mentality is so very often deeply flawed when it comes to it’s beliefs on the “gay lifestyle”. so often gay life is villianized when in reality heterosexuality is often times no less “sinful” as theystereotype it to be.
of course however one also has to ask if the judgement of being gay accelerates the depravity of the gay community.
like because you wrongly call me out my name and tell me I’m going to hell i’ma show you and simultaneously tell myself that there can’t be any truth to the power your God has.
so i will ironically praise evil, i will fuck like crazy, and i will make my sexuality my entire personality - just get out the “ima show you!” type revenge.
it’s wild how the gay community gets ridiculed for “sucking d!ck and c0cc” (hi sisters), and who we love becomes such a controversy that we as a community make our primary culture of attraction, communication, and connection based on sex instead of love? to me, that’s what we will burn in hell for. that’s what any community will burn for - devaluing ourselves and each other. mishandling each other. abusing each other. and maybe my experience in the gay community was one of my own creation, maybe my past abuse led me to create such a distorted reality of dark love and self-destruction at some points, and other times self-mishandling - in the gay community.
i have to hold myself accountable for my experience in the gay community. i truly do.
i made the choices, i may not have had a discerning eye all the time for the quality of people i surrounded myself with that’s for sure but there was always a bit of self-respect to keep me conscious.
—-
i want to make it to 2025 to be celibate. i told myself if i was celibate for a year i would find my man and get married but i wonder how much of that will lie on me actually putting myself out there. i am like “god will bring him” but god will never bring him until you are ready to handle it.
i feel like i need to change my present reality some more. working harder, being more relationally resilient, able to handle myself better in almost any situation, understanding my autistic needs and accommodations, tighten up on discipline. a car would be nice. i’m trying to decide if i should swear or not. like a damn car would be nice sounds punchier than a car would be nice but is damn tied to too much anger? is the anger i place in my life energy i wish to continue entertaining? is it something that is good for me? idk. i do know however it puts my life more at risk - specifically when i lift my middle finger when on my bike. like not you being rude or unsafe driving a 2,000 lb machine while I’m on 20 lb aluminum can with wheels that do nothing without my effort.
that being said i’m horny as f. like i feel like there shouldn’t be shame in your adult sexual identity and yet at the same time how do you do so mindfully? can you or i find a safe friends with benefits or is there a danger of inevitable heartbreak there? i never again want to put myself in the position to be heartbroken by loving recklessly. i almost can’t have anyone leave me again. and how do you prioritize sexuality in a balanced healthy way without making it a too-large cornerstone of your relationship?

Top 5 songs
Thanks for asking!! It makes me happy to get asks.
1. Passenger by Deftones (ft. Maynard James Keenan). It’s an incredibly gay song, a duet sang by two men who claim that the song is about having a girl in it (there are no girls in the song) with incredible sexual chemistry. The lyrics are blatently sexual, as is the singing. 10/10.
2. Trafalgar Law - Dr Heartstealer. This song is about how much control he has in his Room, and about what type of character Law is. I love that he thinks proclaiming what’s important to you aloud is too naive. But more importantly, it’s also a very sexy song for some reason. When he gets to whispering in my ear, my ear feels as if it’s being gently caressed by silk gloves. Let’s just say that Law is sexy when he’s being threatening and cocky.
3. Donquixote Doflamingo - Aku no Charisma. This is a perfect title song for Doffy, Imo. It contains his favourite sayings, “The weak don’t get to choose how they die”, and “the winner is just”. It’s a summary of the Dressrosa arc, which (I’m still watching) makes him the fantastic villian that he is. He also calls Dressrosa “his”, and the amount of evil that emanates in this song is ... *thumbs up*
4. Tool - Lateralus. Sometimes music and mathematics collide. Fan theories include how the fibonacci sequence is reflected in this song. On a visceral level, the progression in syllables and rhythm makes for a very entrancing listen. As someone who used to dissociate regularly and still subscribe to the mind-body dichotomy (having a body unsettles me actually), it urges one to not overthink, which makes it a good song to meditate to.
5. A Perfect Circle - Pet. This. Is a good ship song. It could be because I have, um, alternative taste in ships. It’s a perfect song about how an abuser could manipulate someone into being in their control, and even wage war for them. The sinister nature of this song makes listening to it an incredibly soothing experience, would recommend.

Winx Live Action
Finally came around to watching it soo here are my thoughts. Spoilers under the gif
Tumblr media
Sooo l know nobody gives a shit apart from like one or two of you. I like doing this type of thing tho.
Overall, I wasn't mad about it. Apart from the whitewashing, weird romances, and horrendous outfits... It was decent. I disliked most of the characters at one point but ended up only really living Musa (surprise surprise her and Flora were my queens back when I was obsessed with Winx) and Beatrix (surprise surprise I was super gay for the three witches as well lmao). I'm already planning a fic with them. I didn't care about the boys at all and tbh I'm pissed that Dane and Riven seemed to be hinted at and then nothing came of it. They made it seem like Dane was gay and had a crush on Riven but?? Nothing happened?? It was never confirmed cause you can find someone attractive and not have romantic attraction towards them. Disappointed that Musa wasn't lesbian and even more disappointed that there wasn't a confirmed lgbt character. At least give me a background character who is bro.
The outfits were hideous. No idea who picked them out but oof. I only ever liked two outfits and they were Musa's. They looked like middle aged woman. I didn't get teen vibes from any of them apart from the hairstyles.
The powers. They??? Completely??? Changed?? Musa's??? Powers??? She went from a sound fairy to a mind fairy? I had to double check to make sure. They never explained why Aisha went from super good to terrible for like two eps. Terra was.. Terra. I completely forgot Stella had powers lmao until the fight with the monster. I thought the little bubble light was something everyone could do.
Honestly, much more tolerable than Tiny Pretty Things. Thank fuck there were no sex scenes. I can handle blood and gore. Unncessary 5-10 min sex scenes? Fuck no. I feel like the last ep had too much info. Like, keep Miss Dwhateverthefuck alive for like at least another season. I was starting to like her but they killed her off so like I gave no fucks about her death.
Beatrix was amazing and I loved her. I'm assuming she's gonna be Icy, Darcy, and Stormy all in one. Kinda of sucks cause I wouldn't have minded two more evil chicks causing mayhem. Tbh Bloom was lowkey the real villian lmao. Aishia being a snitch was annoying tho. Them butting in to stop Bloom from releasing Beatrix was annoying.
Anyways I hope the person in charge of the outfits realizes how shitty they were. Like, I could dedicate whole pintrest boards on each girl for their outfits. Step it up, Netflix.

em on your batwoman post. like 100% yes i will continue to stan s2 for what they are doing and the amazing rep both for black women specifically and lgbt and the intersection there. they are handling it so nuanced and well and im honestly surprised and impressed so for those reasons alone i will continue to support and say nothing but good things to anyone about it.. that being said. theyre villian safiyah.. is a straight up stereotype and offensive to the brown community in a mill diff ways 1/2
and i wont ramble on about it in your ask box if you dont want of course. and i also feel bc how rare this rep for black women and the lgbt community i dont wanna bash the show bc its better to have it than not. so i guess i and other ppl in the brown community are gonna stay quiet and silenced bc we recognize even though its taking from us, its giving to our sister poc and lgbt. but just had to say at least once that it does suck that they did the whole tokenized stereotype thing w saf 2/2
===========
Nobody has to stay silent about the things in Batwoman that should be improved. :) The criticism was loud and persistent throughout S1, and for all the things it did right, that criticism was also warranted in many cases.
My inbox is always open to thoughtful criticism, and I think we can enjoy media while still seeing its flaws and talking about those.
I generally don’t like elaborate villain storylines that take too much exposition and complicated dialogue to follow, and Alice’s part of S2 hasn’t landed as well as Ryan’s stories, IMO. Maybe it will improve when injured Kate has more of a role; at least that’s my hope.
I understand Safiyah is based on a character from the comics, and she’s played by a British actress of Indian descent, Shivani Ghai. (She’s stunning! Unfortunately also cursed by the CW Bad Wig department.) I don’t know how closely she tracks the comic version who is a lesbian pirate from the fictional island of Coryana (general outline seems the same as the TV version).
We could also argue that the gay villain (not coded but explicitly gay) is not a good stereotype, but on the other hand the rep on this show is so plentiful that lgbtq+ characters are allowed to run the full gamut of heroes, anti-heroes, villains and everything in between.
Is the negative stereotype embodied by Safiyah across different dimensions mitigated by the fact that she’s  not portrayed as a Lex Luthor-type, and is in fact not purely evil and malevolent?
It is eventually revealed that Safiyah never had Kate, as well as the fact that she was never responsible for causing the explosion on the latter's private jet, as it was all orchestrated by Tatiana in order to drive a wedge between Safiyah and Beth.
In other words, she’s being allowed by the story to be complicated, too.

Fandom thoughts:
I am always going to be bias and automatically make characters my favorite if they have
daddy issues
Abusive parents or guardians
Has a single parent who is a mom and works so hard at it.
Great hair
Is an artist
Is a booknerd
Is a fandom nerd
Is dramatic
Is campy/basically a theater nerd
Can sing and or play an instrument

Note
this isn't off any prompt list but hero/villian indruck where they have a meetcute and both desperately try to keep the other from finding out their alter ego as their relationship gets more and more serious while simultaneously trying to keep their rival away from their seemingly innocent love interest for fear of endangering them
Here you go!
“You win this round, Knight,” The Moth hovers, mechanical wings flapping and smile spreading across his face. The blood trickling down his nose doesn’t faze him in the slightest, “But I’m sure we’ll see each other quite soon.”
He flies off before Duck can grab him, leaving the hero standing, arms crossed (and cross in general), his quiet evening at home ruined by The Moth’s need cause trouble at the Governors Ball.
He’d just gotten to a good part in his book too.
------------------------
“Oh goodness, I’m so sorry!”
Duck looks up as he’s wiping coffee from his lap to find a tall, gangly, angular stranger hurriedly tossing down his bag  to help clean up the spill.
“I’m sorry, I get lost in my thoughts sometimes and oh, darn it all.” In his eagerness to help, the taller man splashes coffee onto this white tank top, giving him a belly splotch that matches the one on Ducks green t-shirt.
“It’s uh, no big deal, ain’t like I was in my Sunday best and, uh, that ain’t a library book.”
“Oh no your book.” The other man lifts the stained paperback, looks at it sadly, “At least let me buy you a replacement.” He’s holding the book to his chest now, clearly hopeful that Duck will let him make amends.
Between the red-brown eyes, the tousled, silver-dyed hair, and the earnest, odd smile, he has an air of disheveled charm that, at his age, Duck ought to be past finding adorable.
Instead, he smiles back, “Sure thing. Bookstore  two blocks down oughta have copies, and a little cafe to boot. You let me buy you a replacement drink, I’ll let you buy me a new book. Deal?”
The other man nods, hands flapping, “Yes, that sounds wonderful.”
Duck grins, suddenly excited, before noticing he’s a bit sticky.
“Meet me there in an hour so we can both change?”
“It’s a date.”
--------------------------------------
It’s a date? Agh, of all the ways he could have phrased it, why did his blasted, traitorous mouth choose that one?
He stands awkwardly in one corner of the cafe, hands stuffed into the pockets of his pink and yellow cardigan. Was this too flamboyant? He doesn’t even know if the other man is gay. He supposes he could look into the futures to determine the answer to that, but doing so feels rude.
This is why he turned to supervillainy in the first place; he’s terrible with people.
He wishes he’d worn his glasses. They’re technically a tool of his trade, but they make him feel safe.
“Uh, howdy.”
He glances up, finds the man from before looking at him. Now that he’s not racked with panic trying to clean up a spill, he has a chance to take in just how much his type the man is. Short, but bear like (”a teddy bear” his mind supplies, unhelpfully), with green eyes and charming, unhurried vibe to him. His drawl does remind him of a certain hero who’s always in his way, but he won’t hold that against him.
“Buy you a coffee?”
“Yes, please. Ah, um, I guess I should introduce myself; I’m Indrid.”
“Duck” he holds out his hand and Indrid takes it, enjoys the warmth and strength in his grip, “Nice to meet you.”
--------------------------------------
“We’ve got to stop meeting like this.” Duck tightens Beacon around The Moth, who tears at the blade with his retractable claws. Duck learned about those the hard way, when the villain extended them during one of their first meetings. The slash broke the skin, something rare for Duck on account of his durability.
“And you have got to come up with some more creative lines, hero.” The Moth snarls, “you have used that one twice before now. Which is also how many times you have forgotten about this.”  The villain throws himself sideways and down with enough force to yank Duck to his knees and loosen his grip. As his sword clatters to the ground, red powder fills his eyes.
“Gah, jesus, not that shit again.” His eyes sting, and as he pats the ground for Beacon he hears the scrape of metal moving away from him. Beacons hilt disappears into the mist, dragged slowly back by The Moth’s foot.
Duck looks up at him through watering eyes, trying not to breath in the dust.
“Well, you got me at your mercy. You gonna start gloatin about your evil plans or some shit?”
A light, sharp laugh, “Why would I waste my time in such a way? Oh no, I shall be making off with my prize. And making sure you don’t follow me.”
He raises his foot, and Ducks vision whites out on one side as he crumples.
He should be more worried about the villain getting away with the schematics for the ApCorps latest government security features.
Mostly, he’s worried he’ll have a black eye tomorrow.
------------------------
“Hel-oh goodness, Duck, your eye.” Indrid opens the door a half second before Duck knocks, then quickly cups his cheeks to take a closer look.
“Looks worse than it is, sugar, don’t worry. And, uh, surprise.” He produces a small bouquet of Irises from he behind his back. Indrid beams, taking them with squeak of delight.
“They’re lovely, but what’s the occasion?” He’s smiling almost like he knows, almost like he just wants to hear him say it.
“Know, uh, know I said I wanted to take things slow, but I realized we been datin a month I ain’t given you anythin.”
“You bought me coffee that first time. And we have each bought dinner for the other multiple times.” Indrid takes his hand, drawing him inside.
“I know but, well, kinda wanted to do somethin a little more special.”
“Any time with you is special.”
Duck snorts, “Cornball.”
Indrid kisses, “I learned from the best.”
-------------------------------------
“What can I say, I learned from the best.” Indrid grins at The Knight, who is currently hanging upside down in an elegantly simple snare.
“I got the idea from that unpleasant sword of yours. Keep your enemy tied up nice and tight to keep them out of your OW, ow, alright I should have seen that coming.” His glasses are now cracked from the Knight headbutting him.
“I’m impressed you could manage that upside down.”
“Drop these fuckin chains off me and I’ll show you somethin real impressive.”
Indrid tilts his head, “Tempting, but I have a pressing engagement tomorrow morning. Not to mention I need to get this,” he pats the painting he just lifted from the house of a man with a gold toilet, “somewhere safe. Until we meet again.” He offers a mocking salute, and takes flight.
--------------------------------------------
“Again?” Indrid offers, pressed against warm, sweat-tinged expanse of Duck’s chest, his heart beating in time with the rapid rise and fall of Ducks breathing.
“Nope. Not that the body and mind ain’t willin, but the mind and body also got work tomorrow. Damn that felt good.” He usually tops, but with Indrid he’s found it more variable; some nights, like tonight, the other man fucks him into the bed, or over the nearest table, or however far they get before Duck can’t stand waiting anymore. Other nights, Indrid gets on all fours so Duck can fuck him with the strap, drops to his knees before they make it past the entryway, tugging at Duck’s belt buckle with little whimpers.
“Mmmm, it was magnificent my love.” Indrid goes stone still in his arms as that last syllable flutters in the air.
Duck brushes strands of pale hair from his forehead, “I love you too, ‘Drid.”
His boyfriend flops down in relief, “oh thank goodness that’s the way it went.”
“As if I could feel any other way about you.”
Indrid mutters something that might be “cornball” into his chest, yawns and nestles closer with whisper of “love my teddy bear.”
“Love you too, sugar.”
Shit.
He’s in love with Indrid.
Bad things happen to superhero love interests. Very bad things. He can’t bear losing him, but no one beside the other members of the Pine Gaurd know his secret identity. He’s not ready to tell him yet. Soon, but not yet.
Indrid rolls sleepily onto his side and Duck goes with him, turning into the little spoon in his embrace. God, what if an enemy decides to kidnap him, hurt him, just to get to Duck?
Then again, no villain has singled him out, save for one.
Which he’ll need to deal with that one as soon as he can.
-------------------------
“Give up while you still can, Moth!”
“Not a chance.” Indrid hisses back, clutching the gash on his arm from the sword. What has gotten into the Knight today? Usually he only fights Indrid the amount needed to stop whatever crime he’s busy committing.
Today he’s trying to destroy him.
He’s been training, that much is clear, he has new moves that Indrid finds difficult to anticipate in a fight, and a fire in his eyes that heightens Indrid’s guard.
As he flits out of reach of yet another strike, his goal of thievery long forgotten in favor of not getting chopped in half, he tries to determine the source of the change. What would make him fight harder?
Duck. He’d burn this city to the ground, tear every hero in it to pieces, if Duck were in danger.
He reaches the edge of the building, but before stepping off to safety he turns.
“You win tonight, Knight. But do give that new lover of yours my regards.”
--------------------------------------------
“Hey, Indrid?”
“Yes?” His boyfriend looks up from his sketches.
“I was wonderin if, uh, if you’d like to go to a  fancier place than normal? Barclay got me an in at La Lune, thought we could go on Friday. There’s, uh, there’s somethin I wanna talk about.”
“Is is a marriage proposal or breaking up with me?”
“What? No!”
Indrid chuckles, “I am teasing. Mostly.” He bounces his eyebrows and Duck rolls his eyes in response.
“Thought afterwards, might be nice to go out to the park and stargaze, tell you what I need to in private.”
“That sounds lovely, my love.”
------------------------------
The stars are aligning in Indrid’s favor this week.
Yesterday, when the Knight tried to corner him on his way out of his lair, he took the gamble of getting close, earning him the reward of landing a deep slash on The Knight’s cheek. One he won’t be able to heal by tonight. Whether he’s in his hero get-up or his civilian clothes, Indrid will be able to spot him.
And tonight, he has it on good authority that the Knight will be appearing in this block of the city.  The same block on which sits La Lune. Indrid can go to dinner with his boyfriend right after removing the biggest threat to said boyfriend.
He’s perched on the roof of the restaurant, steering clear of the large skylight. His glasses scan the streets, the windows all around him.
But this is taking longer than anticipated. He hasn’t looked too far into the futures for the night, since his growing romantic side wants whatever Duck tells him to be a true surprise.
He pulls out his phone, swipes to his conversation with Duck. Beneath the photo of a Scarlet Tanager Duck sent him from his work at the ranger station he types, running behind, will be there shortly after 7.
He receives back, NP, see you soon sugar with a kissy face.
The minutes tick by, the spring sun setting inch by inch behind the downtown skyline. At 7:05, he peeks through the skylight, spots Duck. He can’t see his face all the way in the mood lighting of the restaurant, but he knows his gait, his profile.
At 7:30 there is still no sign of his nemesis. He’s been scanning and staring and searching, looking at his phone only once after it buzzes many times. He has four missed calls and five texts
Duck: ETA? Damn, this place is even fancier than I thought.
Duck: Everything okay? If you’re close, I can order us some appetizers so you don’t got to wait to eat.
Duck: Can’t wait to see you.
Duck: Are you still coming? Are you okay?
Duck: Sugar?
That last one comes as he’s reading the others. He peers down through the skylight, sees Duck stare at his phone for a ten count, gnawing his lip. Then he looks up at the sky, eyes shut, as if weighing a decision.
Indrid’s heart plummets.
There’s a gash on Duck’s cheek.
A gash he put there.
Every coincidence, every strange incident he’d pushed to side, lost in the happiness of their courtship, floods his mind.
Suddenly, he knows what Duck was going to tell him.
With shaking fingers, he types,
So sorry, my battery died at the worst of all times, I borrowed a charger from a good samaritan. I’m nearly there.
It takes him two and a half minutes to descend the building and change into his evening wear that he stashed nearby.
At three minutes, he’s walking through the doors, Duck jumping up and hugging him before he even makes the table.
“Sorry for, uh, textin so much, I guess I got a bit nervous. Y’know how shit can get here; can be walkin home and suddenly a supervillain is wreckin shit and you’re collateral.”
“I understand.” He takes his seat, Duck relaxing into the chair opposite him, “in fact, my love, I understand a great deal.”
Indrid reaches into his pocket, producing a pair of red glasses. He slips them on, knowing the other diners will think nothing of it.
“I look familiar, don’t I?”
Duck stares so long, moving so little, that Indrid fears he sent him into some kind of shock.
“Get out. Now.” Duck’s tone is level, his eyes glinting with threat.
“Duck, please, I, I want to explain-”
“Out. I ain’t gonna tangle with you tonight, but I don’t wanna see you ever again.”
Wordlessly, Indrid removes the glasses, and walks into the night.
---------------------------------------------
Indrid is out of ideas.
For the first week after his confession, he searched the futures religiously for any sign that Duck would come after him, would reveal his apartment to the other heroes.
It never came.
He hasn’t stolen anything in two months.
He sent a single apology letter to Duck, doing his best to explain the situation. Watched the futures narrow down to a single one; Duck reading it, then tearing it up.
He even sent anonymous notes to the Pine Guard, altering them to several oncoming disasters or the kind of supervillainy that has a body count.
Wounded pride, a loss of purpose, a wave of self-loathing, and a dozen other complexly unpleasant emotions could form the center of his world.
But it all comes down to one simple feeling: he misses Duck. Misses his smile, his sense of humor, his strange laugh, the safety he felt by his side, and endless list of things stripped from his life by his own actions.
Which is why it has come to this.
He sets up the camera, and starts recording.
------------------------------------------------
“Hey, Duck, I think you should see this.”
Duck plods into the main control room, where Ned is fiddling with the video feed while Aubrey waves him to sit by her.
“I swear to fuck if it’s that police chief tryin to recruit us again-”
“Nah, Aubrey and I finally got through to him.” Mama tosses out from the corner where she’s busily whittling a wooden duck.
The screen flickers blue, and then Duck feels the opposing pulls of revulsion and longing as Indrid’s face appears. His glasses are off, but he’s otherwise in his full villain get-up.
“Hello Duck, and, ah, I assume the rest of the Pine Guard. It is fine with me if you all listen in, but this message is ultimately for him.”
Barclay reaches over Ned to hit pause, “Duck?”
“Y’all can stay.”
The video resumes.
“I have two messages. The first is an apology; not necessarily for the things I have stolen, but for any genuine harm I caused other people, yourselves included. And I apologize once again, and as many more times as you require, Duck, for not telling you the truth sooner. In my defense, there is no easy way to admit to the man you love that you are a supervillain. All the same, I ought to have been brave enough to try, for your sake.”
Indrid sits up and Duck leans forward.
“My second message is that I am retiring from supervillainy. I could say something about a change of view on the world in general, but the truth is that villainy is less interesting without an equal to rival and banter with me. And, well, I am sure I can find other ways to fill my days. Especially if the man I care for is by my side. I should be clear that my retirement is not contingent on you reaching out to me again, Duck. Merely that it is something you may wish to know. Ah, I suppose that is all. This is the Moth, signing off for the last time. I’m sorry again, Duck. I love you.”
“Think it’s a bluff?” Aubrey asks as the screen goes dark.
“No, as one who has mastered the art of insincerity, I do not believe so.” Ned responds, switching on the lights.
Duck, for his part, says nothing.
---------------------------------------------------
Indrid rolls off the bed at the knock, rubbing his eyes as he trudges to the door, too tired to look at the futures.
“How can I…”
The sight of Duck Newton on his doorstep elicits so many emotions that he short circuits.
“Hey.”
“Hello.”
“So, retiring huh?”
“Yes.” He fights the urge to chew his nails.
“Guess that means you’re free to talk right now?”
“Indeed.” He steps back, allowing Duck to step in and shut the door.
“Great, Because we got a lot to talk about. But, uh, first.”
He cups Indrids cheeks, kissing him so lovingly that the former villain melts against him, gripping the front of his ranger jacket the way a falling man grasps at a cliff.
“I missed you so much.” He whispers, and before he has time to hate the crack in his voice, Duck is kissing him again, guiding him slowly and surely to the couch, murmuring in between kisses.
“Missed you too, so much, goddamn, couldn’t stop thinkin about you, love you so much ‘Drid, wanna make things right, we’re gonna make ‘em right, I promise.”
Indrid glances at the futures, sees that in all of them they do, in fact, end up having a long, serious conversation, one that ends in even softer kisses and Duck curled around him in his bed.
But there’s still a few more minutes for him to savor being here, safe and secure, in the arms of his hero.

General thoughts on RWBY Antagonists:
Salem: Big bad with a titty window. What else is there to say? Our wicked witch of the west. Not saying she'll get a redemption but she might actually help save the day in the end? Might not. Jinn's whole, no way to kill Salem thing makes me think Ruby is going to have to convince her to not end the world. Really love her backstory. All her interactions with the gods had such a good similarity to fairytales. Gonna make you immortal until you appreciate life or whatever? Get outta here. Love it.
Cinder: So collected and boring (except for hilariously unnecessary wardrobe changes) in vol 1-3. Became my favorite villain once things weren't going her way. Our Cinderella may have a tragic backstory but she will get no redemption. She's carrying out her own plans but is still loyal to her fairy godmother, Salem. Not out of loyalty, but because she's smart. Everytime Cinder is on screen my brain jumps up and down but it'll be incredibly satisfying seeing her taken down in the end (whoever that may be, Ruby or Jaune).
Adam: Literally was there to have an insanely satisfying death. Wilting rose was a stand in for a domestic abuser who was defeated by his victim and Yang who was protecting his victim. He was a huge part to Blake's backstory and Blake and Yang's storylines vol 4-6. Love what he added. Love how he died.
Torchwick: Gotten say never was a huge fan of his but loved his speech right before he got eaten. And his death caused Neo's whole plot line in vol 6 and 7, which is *chef's kiss* Looking back he was a good middle management type villian for vol 1-3.
Neapolitan: She's not just there for having THE best fighting style and fun spunky attitude. At this point, she is the only one with the sole goal of killing Ruby. She has some added depth for caring about her old donzo boss. Another character that makes my brain jump up and down. What's she gonna do?! She's following Cinders plan for now but Neo is the most unpredictable character right now. Cannot wait for her to meet Ruby again. And hopefully Yang.
Emerald: She's the diamond in the rough! The show made us sympathetic to her pretty early on. This girl is getting a nice redemption that she'll earn and deserve.
Mercury: We were made sympathetic to him later than Emerald but he'll get the same outcome. His redemption will no doubt be born from his attachment and affection to Emerald. In my mind he's the Jasmine to Emerald's Aladdin. Boy's got no other fairytale attachment right?
Hazel: He adds a nice bit of 'Ozpin you monster' vibe. Similar to Mercury, will see redemption through his care for Emerald. Dad bod, I like him.
Arthur Watts: Gives Salem's posse brains. Having intelligent villains can give interesting plots and twists. Evil Sherlock Holmes.
Tyrion: Just the psycho on the team. It's enjoyable seeing other villians look uneasy when he does anything. He's built a history with Ruby and ESPECIALLY Qrow. He's the scorpion on the frog. Kinda hate him but love his fighting style. It will be very enjoyable to see whomever kills him.
Ironwood: Embodiment of absolute power corrupts absolutely. Love it. He's a great example of why teams on RWBY are so important. Turned into a cold blooded tin man.
Cordovin: Old lady in the shoe. I for one loved the vol 6 climax with her. A good one season villian. I like the "2 old ladies fight". And it was nice to have the gang fight someone outside of Salem's gang for a season.
Honorary:
Raven: We have her for the sweet angst (and don't forget Yangst!). Literally cannot wait to see team STRQ backstory. She had her own agenda in vol 5 and it was amazing (and totally backfired on her). Pinnacle of morally grey character. She sees love as a weakness but her semblance literally only works if she bonds to people! Ah it's beautiful. Has history with Yang of course and sees Ruby as Summer (and Tai moving on-ouch). She literally kicked Weiss in the face 😭. If the show has time, they could highlight the similarities between Raven and Blake.
Ilia: Good baby gay. She had a nice redemption and rounded Blake's love interests to 4 (the only number allowed on RWBY). Hopefully she gets a callback.

mdzs novel review
Now that we’re in quarantine and I have an infinite amount of time on my hands, why not read a novel that’s 500k, right?
(Spoilers ahead.)
I totally fucked up my sleeping schedule by staying up for three nights in a row and sleeping four hours in the afternoon while reading it. worth it, though. Despite a few flaws that tripped me up close to the end, Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) was a gorgeous story. Kudos to the translators for giving it to us in English.
I’ll start off by saying that this story is not for the faint of heart. The main character has very grey morals. There is self-cannibalism, gore, period-typical homophobia, corpses come to life, mentions of rape, incest, sexual content, straight up dubcon and disturbing themes all the way through. If I’d seen this tagged as such on Ao3, I definitely would have left it alone. Despite all this, there’s also some truly wonderful characters, a plot unlike anything I’ve ever read before, subtle pining, fantastic worldbuilding, magical music, found families, and!! canonly lgbt characters that get to experience all of this things in the one hundred goddamn chapters it takes for them to get together.
The Good:
Wei Wuxian. One of the most interesting characters I’ve ever encountered. How can one be so good, so happy, so giving, yet so incredibly fucking annoying? He’s so clever, but also a moron. He’s selfless, but only in regards to things and people he cares about. He has an absolutely terrible memory (god me too) and knows how to get under everyone’s skin and has killed literal thousands of people and also. He is my son. If I knew him in real life I think he wouldn’t have survived long enough to become the Yiling Patriarch but in fiction he is wonderful.
The plot: Look. This novel is longer than the first four Harry Potter books combined. You can almost think of it as two books- one set in the past, one set sixteen years later. But although it’s the longest book I’ve ever read, it never really felt boring. It was definitely confusing at times (I’ve never had to take notes on a novel before to keep everything straight in my head) but I wasn’t bored. Things just keep happening- Wei Wuxian is back from the dead!! Now there’s a creepy hand!! Now there’s a statue that can move!! Now we’re in the past!! Now we’re back in the present and there’s a castle that eats people!! Now we’re in a ghost city and there’s some freaky stuff going down!! Time for the saddest flashback of all time, and now we’re starting to put the puzzle of this dismembered person together!! All of this is interspersed with worldbuilding and character dynamics and creating a full picture of the past and- whew. It was so hard to tear myself away to sleep or eat because I just wanted to know- what’s going to happen next?
The love story: Hello, slowest of burns in the entire fucking world. I live for the enemies-to-friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-what-are-we-to-lovers love story that this book gave me. Lan Wangji, you poor emotionally repressed disaster gay. Wei Wuxian, you blind oblivious moronic disaster bi. Somehow, they’re perfect for each other. I was really, really hesitant to read this book because I know it has roots in that specific straight-girl-writes-gay-men type of culture that is often terrible and fetishistic. There were definitely things that I disagreed with that that I’ll talk about later, but largely, stereotypes were avoided and I have to give the author credit for this relationship that managed to be so many things. I relate heavily to the type of person Lan Wangji is, and I adored watching him fall for Wei Wuxian, through Wei Wuxian’s eyes, without either of them really even realizing it. They’re the definition of what I like to call a “Red and Blue couple”- the opposites, the fire and ice, the calm and the wild, the dark and the light, the red and the blue, who complement one another so well despite being so different. They balanced each other out wonderfully. Don’t talk to me about the WangXian song or the fact that they have a child or I will start crying.
Lan Wangji: Though I love Wei Wuxian, annoying traits and all, Lan Wangji is who I heavily resonated with. He kind of reminds me of Else from Frozen?? Anyone else?? Like, his whole thing is basically “conceal don’t feel”, except what he’s concealing is the fact that he feels things so deeply. He just wants to help people, to be essentially perfect at what he does (scooby doo villian voice: and he would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for wei wuxian) His character development from the past to present was lovely. I silently cheered for him whenever he broke the rules, or let the strict facade down for a bit.
The side characters: Literally how are there so many characters in this book who are so fleshed out that they feel like real people? Xiao XingChen, Lan SiZhui, Wen Ning, Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng and Jiang LanYi all especially stood out to me, but even beyond them, everyone had a fully explained reason and motivation for like, everything they did. Even if I hated the villains, they weren’t needlessly evil. We love a grey story.
But there were some things I didn’t like.
The Bad
The R rated stuff: Well. This is probably the weirdest critique I’ve ever had to make about a book, and maybe some of it was partly due to translation, but... the sex was out of character. I thought the general dynamic made no sense for the two of them as people and it just.... wasn’t super well written? Thankfully I was warned beforehand that the Incense Burner chapters contained content I wasn’t prepared to read, but yikes, I felt like I was reading about two different characters the second clothes started coming off. I haven’t finished the bonus chapters for this reason. The second I read the word “rape”, I had to stop. Consent is a pretty hard line for me, and I can’t do a dubcon kink. Obviously the author can do whatever the hell she wants with her characters, but I felt like she threw away their personalities for the sake of trying to write something hot (which- it wasn’t.) This is why straight people have no rights and also why I will be pretending those scenes don’t exist.
The Hatred Chapters: I do feel like all of the tension and action was sort of- let down at what was supposed to be the climactic showdown in the temple. It dragged on for so many chapters that I didn’t feel on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. That could also be due to translation. I’m not sure. Maybe I need to read the Hatred chapters again. But I did feel sort of let down in the final 20 chapters of this novel. It wasn’t enough to seriously impact how much I love the general concept, but it was disappointing.
Semi related but after 100 chapter build up, that confession could have been better. Again- maybe a translation thing.
The Nie MingJue backstory flashback: just- honestly wasn’t interesting to me. It was the only part of the novel that I really had to slog through.
Lastly - this isn’t the novel’s fault, and I am certainly grateful to the translators for all of their work translating this gigantic novel, but there were some consistent grammatical issues surrounding the dialogue tags that bugged me. I’m not sure how it is in Chinese, but in English, writing “Wei WuXian, “Nothing.””  just- isn’t correct. At the very least, you need a verb like “said”. I usually read fast enough that my brain tends to insert the word even if it’s not there, but when reading slowly, this did frequently jar me out of the story. I’d be willing to edit the entire novel just to fix these errors. But it says a lot about how good this novel is that I continued reading despite errors like this because something like that in a fic would have me closing the tab immediately.
Alright, that’s all.
Overall:
There are so many small things, little moments and lines that I loved about this story, it would take me days to list them all. The dialogue patterns from character to character were distinct. Things like the forehead ribbon were endlessly entertaining. Side plots like the A-Qing one had me in tears and I was laughing a few chapters late from drunk LWJ. The novel was just fun to read. There were errors, yes, there were disappointments, sure. But it made me feel so much. I’ve been through the entire range of human emotion while reading it, and it’s so rare to find a book that just yanks you into the universe like this one did to me. I really needed an escape this week, and this was absolutely a welcome one. If I go read it again, I’m sure I’ll find a hundred more things I like about it. Heed the warnings I’ve given, if you read it, but I absolutely adored most of this book and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.
9/10.

1 thru 10, 20 thru 25 for pollux :0?
Griff! Thank you! :D mostly under the cut bc this got long XD
1. what is their secret identity? do they have any nicknames? what is the meaning behind them?
Pollux Bixby is his secret identity! He isn’t much used to hearing his full name, or really his first name, so it’s often like “whooooommm??” when someone says his name. He doesn’t really have a nickname, but back in his sidestep days, the group would often shorten his name and call him Lux. Lux-a-rooni was a common one for Ortega. Pollux picked his name because he’s always been very fond of space and stars. He would have been an astrophysicist if his life has been different.
2. what is their sexual/romantic orientation and gender?
Pollux is “gender is for nerds” and uses he/him pronouns. He mainly describes his sexual orientation asj ust queer. He has a hard time defining his attraction or lack there of at times, so the all encompassing nature of queer is comfy.
3. what is their villain name? why did they choose it?
His villian name is Dioscuri which is a nod back to his love of the stars + a nod to his own name and his puppets name. He knows it was “””edgy””” picking something so close to his own name, but he likes it. There is a fun dualism of identity in naming himself after the twins of Greek Mythology that can be....more close to the truth than he cares to admit at times.
4. what does their villain armor look like? what is their typical style of dress?
He chose the “mysterious” armor and it has a mirror finish all around and it’s very sleek, but there is a solidity about it, a presence to it. It’s also like with blacks and silver metal. He built it for speed and strength.
Normally, Pollux has a quirky fashion sense + layers. He likes crop tops and boxy shirts, stripped pants. Matching patterns are for other people and he has got no time to not be obnoxious. He has a big army green hoodie with an nb patch on it that he loves. He does have a shirt that says “sidestep eats ass” and “be gay, do crime”
5. what is their zodiac sign?
honestly...i unno bout him yet. I wanna say he might be a scorpio, since he does have a winter birthday.
6. what is their mbti type?
He’s an INTJ: the architect
7. what is their dnd alignment?
He is neutral evil, my fave of the evil alignments. He is more conscious of the lives of others, but not enough to change his alignment
8. Are they more calculating or more sincere in their interactions with others?
Depends. In rebirth, he was much more calculating in his interactions with people, seeing them as pieces on a chess board and “how can i get what I need out of them?” He had a deadline to keep and he wasn’t about to get caught up in people ruining his plans. Even with the Rangers back in his life, he was still committed to moving forward in his plans, the inevitable of becoming a villain.
In retribution, he feels like he can be more sincere with people. He’s taken the step of being a villain, committed to that course of action. There is a separation between Pollux and Dioscuri, so he can be looser with who he is. He also is just....running with who he is and his actions, but he is leaning on wanting to give people the truth, to be sincere. He feels like he owes that much to folks like Ortega and Steel.
9. How honest are they?
He tries to be, but he’s def a liar by omission quite often. Telling the truth is hard, telling his big secrets is next to impossible, even with the people he loves. He knows he’s terrible keeping his big secrets and lying--esp to Ortega--but he’s not ready to get rid of his mask, have people in close. so he is a big fat liar.
10. Are they a leader or a follower?
He is a leader, albeit a terrible one. He prefers to only have to manage himself and no one else; he was content to be a vigilante and work with the Rangers, but he likes to be alone to do his work. He’s a bad team player.
20. How do they feel about death?
Deep down in the places that Pollux doesn't want to talk about and recognize, he wants to die. Living is hard, living is pain. Is he even really living, or has he just convinced himself he is a living thing, worthy of life? He’s delusional thinking he can be a living thing. But he isn't going to make a plan, or take his own life. He’ll keep living, mainly spitefully, but if someone could kill him/put him in a position where he can’t fight back and he’s staring death in the face...he’ll take it.
21. What is their philosophy?
He’s got a pretty standard set of morals he abides behind, but he doesn’t hold people to it. He knows people won’t; expecting perfection is asking for the impossible. Other than that, he doesn’t really have a philosophy beyond life sucks with good bits in there, and then you die.
22. How do they feel about their telepathy? is it a gift? a curse?
A gift. Pollux wouldn’t really know what to do with his life if he was permanently without his telepathy. He relies on it so much to do heavy lifting in his life, so without it he would be a disaster. His deficiencies are so strong when he can’t see what is going on inside the heads of others. He is still very good at reading faces, but he is off his game when he can’t see the heads of others.
He doesn’t feel off when it comes to dealing with Ortega since he can’t see what is going on in his head, but it’s still the comfy of having known someone for years. Being seen at the best of the best, and at the worst of the worst.
23. how do they feel about possessing people?
Just a part of his life, part of building his plans, living his life. He doesn’t take pleasure it in, it’s just part of his life. He’s mainly disconcerted by getting his head mixed up in others, not knowing where he is and they are, like with Castor. He feels too fragile, like he’ll shatter in the face of someone much more real than him--much more human. Feeling like a person is like possessing someone, but he’s possessing himself.
24. How do they typically come across to strangers? to friends? do they frequently use their telepathy to influence others’ perceptions of them?
He uses his telepathy a lot to make it so people don’t see him, or just see a plain person, no one of consequence. They just see another face in the crowd. It keeps him safe, keeps him away from the mass amounts of people.
Around friends, he is much less guarded and lets them see him. Often it’s too much work to have up all the shields, especially when he can't read all of his friends like Ortega and what not. He’s much more his caustic, cynical and sarcastic self around his friends. A big angry jerk, but he’s got his heart of gold moments.
25. do they prefer to be alone or with other people?
He prefers to be alone, being an introvert on top of how silence can be....just really, really nice. He likes being able to indulge in the quiet of no other minds around, at least until the anxiety of it just hits him and he panics. He likes the quiet of nobody, but gets anxious quick.
