Someone anonymously messaged me to tell me that writing about detrans folks makes me a traitor to trans people, because all detrans people want to push conversion therapy on us and forcibly detransition us.
That’s precisely the kind of narrative that ends up pushing detransitioners into the arms of TERFs and the religious far-right.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with detransitioning. Sometimes people realize that transitioning no longer suits them, or never really did. And that’s fine.
When we systematically push them away regardless of their politics, we make people feel like the only places they can get support are among transphobes. That’s not a good thing. Building de/trans solidarity is an critical tool for disarming anti-trans movements.

Just a reminder that you (yes, you) are always queer enough. While yes it can be a spectrum, if you fall anywhere on it you have the right to identify as such. There’s so such thing as being more bisexual or more asexual than someone else. You also can’t be a bad aromantic or a bad pansexual.
You just are. And that’s enough :)

Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
On Tuesday, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris announced that her pick for Vice President is Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota. In recent years, as trans and queer people have come under attack from over a thousand proposed bills, Walz is expected to serve as a source of optimism for LGBTQ+ people. The governor’s long track record on LGBTQ+ rights positions him as a strong oppositional force against what has become a national attack on LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender individuals.
“I am proud to announce that I've asked Tim Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his. It's great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work. Join us,” read Harris’ statement on Twitter. Walz has taken decisive action against attacks on transgender people in surrounding states, making Minnesota a refuge for those seeking care. In 2023, he signed an executive order protecting transgender people from out-of-state prosecution if they seek care within Minnesota’s borders. The executive order also issued a bulletin to health insurance companies, mandating coverage and initiating investigations into health insurance denials in the state.
In 2024, Walz signed a bill banning the gay and transgender panic defense. This defense is often used to help individuals avoid murder charges or receive lighter sentences by asserting that they were "deceived" by a romantic partner who was gay or transgender. According to one study, the transgender panic defense has been used at least 351 times. Walz's pro-LGBTQ+ record goes back much further than his time as governor. In 1999, he sponsored the first gay-straight alliance at his high school while working as a teacher. In Congress, he co-sponsored the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and voted to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D)’s track record on LGBTQ+ issues has been stellar, dating back to his pre-Congress days.
This makes me glad that he is the nominee.

Girls, women,WOC, POC, afab, LGBTQIA+ adults and kids: start being meaner
And I’m not saying this to be funny, be meaner if it means protecting yourself. Be harsh and unwavering to those who actively voted against your rights
Don’t give them sympathy, empathy or the benefit of the doubt. They sure didn’t give us that
Protect yourself in any way you can.
Plan B has a shelf life of 4 years if stored properly
Be critical of men, doesn’t matter what they believe. Don’t let them have access to your bodies, hell keep them at an arms length
LGBTQIA+ do what you need to do to stay safe. I know most of us already know but; evaluate where you are and the people around you. We are a strong community, we can preserve. Both on love and spite. We deserve to exist and love
Those who voted Trump do not deserve a passive life
Those who voted third party did not heed our warnings, they shouldn’t feel good about themselves
Those who actively decided not to vote are cowards
They should not be forgiven

You were a young, good looking girl. Or so you were told. Your long blonde hair fell gracefully on your bony bony shoulders. Your defined cheekbones gave you a sharp look. Your skinny waist made you quite the catch in the eyes of people around you.
But you weren't happy, were you? The long hair didn't feel right. Neither did the feminine face or the skimpy outfits you wore to show off your tiny body.
So you choose to pursue happiness instead and admitted to yourself that you're not the girl you're pretending to be. You chopped off the hair into a messy mohawk and dyed it bright colors, got piercings and tattoos, traded your tiny dresses and heels for oversized leather jackets, rough jeans and combat boots. It took years but you eventually even got on testosterone. The changes made you ecstatic. You gained muscle mass, your body hair grew and got darker, your voice deepened....
And you became hungry. All the years of denying yourself the pleasure of food in order to fit into a box caught up to you and for the first time you ate freely. After all, you were basically going through a second puberty and that's just how teenage boys get, right?
They chug bear, tear into a steak, devour plates after plates of chicken wings, fries, pizzas, whatever they can get their hand on. You were no different. You ate everything in sight and soon it started catching up to you.
Your small waist blended into your wide hips, giving you a more boxy, manly appearance. Your thickening thighs tore through your old feminine skinny jeans and became the perfect resting place for your softened belly. Your arms got huge and mixed with the muscle mass you still got they gave you almost bear like appearance. You could easily go out without binding because your tits now just looked like moobs.
Nowadays, you as much as catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and can't help but get horny. The body you worked so hard on makes you wet just thinking about it. You made it yourself out of flesh that was unfit for you and you did it one shot and one stuffing at a time.
Tell me boy, doesn't it feel nice? To finally become one of the big men you always admired? Doesn't the low vibrator of your voice in your throat make you excited? Don't you want to get that tummy to jiggle even more?
I know you want this.
So eat up
You were never meant to be a small girl anyway

To any American reading this of voting age. Or will be of voting age for the 2024 election… VOTE! Vote vote vote. Register to vote. Ensure your friends are registered to vote. If it wasn’t clear before the SCOTUS decisions in the last two days have spelled it out clearly.
If you are not an able-bodied cis white heterosexual man, you are at risk. They will strip away your rights, they will do everything they can to make sure you are erased. That you are silenced that you are dead.
And if you think that your vote doesn’t matter. That there is no point. Then they have won. You have already let them win. You have let them control you.
They will come after you. If you are not a cis white male you are a target. You are disposable. And you will eventually lose your basic rights as a human being. Because if you are not a cus white man… to them you are not human. Simple as.

For Nature’s new series on sex/gender, I wrote with the amazing Shari Brightly-Brown and G Nic Rider about gender modality, the limits of the cis/trans binary, and how to study gender more respectfully and accurately.
Gender modality is a term I coined in 2019 that has picked up a lot of steam in the last few years. It refers to the relationship between someone’s gender identity and gender assigned at birth. It’s a lot like ‘sexual orientation’ but for trans/cis instead of gay/straight.
The term helps us be more accurate and more respectful when describing the experiences of trans people, and opens up space beyond the trans/cis binary.
For instance, it’s often more accurate to say that discrimination against trans people is based on gender modality than based on gender identity. After all, a trans woman has the same gender identity as a cis woman, so that’s not the salient point.
There are also many people who don’t neatly fall in the trans/cis binary, and gender modality helps us talk about that. Non-binary people who don’t identify as cis or trans, gender questioning folks, detrans folks, people with culturally-specific identities, etc.
Our world is incredibly rich with experiences and our language should reflect that. As we say in the paper, the first step in science shouldn’t be assuming, it should be to engage in the world in all its magnificent complexity.
I am grateful to our editor for the opportunity to publish in such a prestigious journal with such amazing coauthors. I hope you all enjoy the read!
For those who prefer to listen, here’s an audio version.

gotta be honest like i don't really get the thing where being accepted as a guy in a group of cishet guys feels super gender affirming because in my experience the way they generally connect with other men as a group is by saying something like 'damn women are fucking crazy just stepping on my nutsack constantly as i get beaten into submission haahaa amirite' in somebody's living room while drinking beer that tastes like shit. only time ive really enjoyed having a 'guy' conversation was when me and this married straight dude got so into discussing the themes and mechanics of metal gear solid 3 in front of his wife n his eyes started shining and he kept staring at me the rest of the night but that kind of situation is a regular tuesday night in my gayboy group chat so idk man
