Chapter 11

…and a baseball umpire’s chest pad someone had brought along.

When I went on my European school tour, somebody brought along a volleyball. At least that serves some practical use: you could theoretically play any large ball-based game with it.

But the umpire chest pad? Why? Why would you happen to have brought that?

A baseball? Yes. 

A bat? Yes. 

Both of the items have uses outside of baseball. You can toss the ball around as entertainment. You can use the bat as a weapon. 

A mit? Yes. 

It’s small and I know a lot of people carry them as reminders of happy memories.

But the chest pad?!

“Scopes are clear, except for some localized fuzziness from one of the aft sensors. It came out clean after diagnostics, so I’m pretty sure it’s interference from one of the shorts that Nelson is working on, given the cluster’s proximity to Shuttle Bay Two.”

I feel like we’re all familiar enough with the scifi genre and tropes to say… Famous last words!

Billings’s image leaned back in his chair and folded his arms over his chest. “Well, the first thing we stumbled on is—”

Chapter 11 summary: Some poor sap is chosen to go in and record the innards of the alien artefact, while Billings and the Captain watch from Billings’s recovery bed. Mitchell is wearing a hazmat suit, but also oven mitts, a helmet, and the stupid umpire pad. As he records and sends live footage back, they talk about what the thing could possibly be. However, each one is as likely or unlikely as the next. Then they see some objects inside of the artefact that look similar to engineering devices used on their own ship, but decide that it must be pure coincidence. That math and science are universal, so it stands to reason that the aliens must have somehow accidentally created the same thing in the same shape. 

Later, Allison has a meeting with a bunch of department heads. There are now so many people awake on the ship that they’re “starting to trip over one another”. All of the ship reports are coming back okay, except for one scope, which is “fuzzy”. “I’m sure it’s fine!” Famous last words. 

Chapter 12

“All right, sweetheart,” he said. “You and I are going to have a little fun.”

Chapter 12 summary: We’re back with the crew in Washington DC. Now that the artefact is open, they’re able to get some useful data. However, the book spends five pages talking shop… 99.99% of this is useless scientific babble that’s inherently meaningless. I did see reviews complaining that “the science in this book was wrong”, but I have no way of confirming that without taking some high-level university classes. In the end, I feel like this was nothing but a massive waste of my time to read. It might as well have been the Charlie Brown trombone noise for all that it moved the plot forward.

Welcome to my newest iteration!!!! Gate crashers!!! I’m really proud of this iteration and everything has been going really good planning and design wise!!! So this will prob become my main focus over Astrological death!! Look forward to more content 😈 hoping to get some art out and a fic eventually!!

The story:

After the fall of earth when the Krang were released, a new empire has been built in the outskirts of space, run by the mother of all: Big Mama. In her work to create mutants made into weapons, competing and training in harsh games with the destiny to one day return to earth and ‘save’ the planet from the viscous apocalypse that has taken hold. But things change when a group of 4 siblings begin to question the way of life they know, only breaking more when a human is brought back to the base, revealing more secrets then they could ever prepare to unpack, in their world and in themselves.

Meet the characters!!!

Leah: With no role on the team Leah is quiet, observant and jumpy with a desperate need to be more than just dangerous

Raph: Raph is the leader and golden child of the team, he is distant, Paranoid and sassy and just wants to keep his siblings out of what he knows they are getting into

Mikey: Mikey is the try hard face man and team motivator, hes bubbly, Gentle and lost and just wants to be good enough to have the role he so desperately tries to get

Dee: Dee is the technician of the group and is hyper, Jittery and scatterbrained, they just want their family to be close again.

Do you have a go-to style, or is it more "vibes based" depending on the work?

this question is prompted by me wondering where the new publishing trend of what seems like a lot of unrelated book series having titles along the lines of

"The [blank] of [blank] and [blank]"

with me wondering where it came from, and if it is based off of one book series that everyone else is trying to copy, if its something publishers are pushing, or a mix of both.

Baldur's Gate 3 Companion Head Canon Party Edition

Tav is throwing a party for their birthday. The playlist is ready, the neighbors are warned and the balloons are blown.

Here is what the companions (and three surprise party crashers) would bring to that little soirée.

Laezel | A strange liquor nobody has heard of

Impossible to know what it is, the label is written in a different alphabet. It has a crazy high alcohol percentage. Never mind it tastes like diesel: it's strong and if you want to get drunk it will get you there. Also it was crazy cheap so she bought 5 bottles (which she'll be the one drinking).

Gale | Some fancy ass bourbon

Nobody will drink it, because it is not that kind of night, Gale! He spends 19 minutes explaining to Tav why this vintage is special and what kind of smoky and woody hints they should get from the taste as well as an extensive story about where it was brewed (some place in the Highlands with blind dwarven monks no doubt).

Shadowheart | Wine 

It is a lower to mid quality bottle but she actually spends all evening drinking cocktails mostly composed of juice and vodka: she likes wine but it stains her teeth and gives her a headache, plus she really likes bright colors in her drinks. If there is Passoa and orange juice and the weather is nice she will be giving it a go. 

Wyll | Tequila

Alongside lemons and salt. The group complains because it’s just not something that gets drinken casually. However, they all end up taking shots around 3am and pass out and/or barf. Wyll is the only one who does not have a hangover the next day because he drinks water in between shots. Will make the cocktails if he is being asked nicely (he brought his shaker as well).

Karlach | Beer

She either comes with two 64-beer crates, one on each shoulder, or a keg (with a funnel and a pipe). She drinks most of these together with Wyll and burps loudly before shouting 'better in than out' and belly laugh herself to cramps. If the beers are canned, she will crush them on her forehead once they are downed. Ultimate beer pong winner.

Astarion | Shows up empty-handed

He feigns he didn't know or that he ran out of time to get something but he'll promise to bring something the next time (which is a lie as he already promised last time at Karlach’s costume party). He will leave with Gale’s expensive bourbon though and gift it to one his teacher from law school (in order to bribe them, of course).

Halsin |Juices

Not these industrial juice boxes mind you, but some organic 100% fruit, no added sugar juice from the bio coop. Or better yet he makes the juices himself - If the time of year is right he will make punch or sangria himself (and be careful it’s sweet but it is treacherous).

Minthara | Cocaïne

Nobody wants to do any. Frankly, Minthara did not read the audience  well. Astarion is willing but feels the vibe and decides not to (he takes her dealer's number for later though)). She ends up doing a line alone in the kitchen. At the height of the night when she's loaded and drunk she makes out with Gale or bullies him (or both).

Jaheira | Soda and ice

To be fair, all kinds of soda, and not just the generic crap either, the good brands. Bubbles no bubbles, fruity, bitter, sweet, you name it. She does not drink as she is the designated driver for her and Minsc (no way they're sleeping over with these kids) so she spends her night sipping on some ginger ale.

Minsc | Goblets

A lot of them. While it was disappointing at first it turns out to be a super sharp idea. Either to drink from or play beer pong they came in extremely handy. Halsin will pout and comment on the sustainability issue. Minsc drinks water but takes a new cup everytime he gets another drink (partly because he is proud of his goblet idea, partly to antagonize Halsin).

Durge | Flour

They are Tav's neighbour and they were invited out of politeness and actually showed up. They come with flour because “hey, remember when I borrowed some, years ago, there, I’m bringing it back like I said I would. We are even now”. They have the best jokes but they will try and start a fight over the playlist (they have issues with music it seems).

Here are a couple of party crashers who were not invited but came anyways.

Barcus | Airfryer and Snacks

He shows up very early to Tav's surprise. He was not exactly invited but thought he was due to Tav mentioning the party to him at work. Upon seeing him Tav is actually happy though and his glad he popped by. He brought his airfryer and some fried goods and that's just awesome.

Volo | His guitar

He was not invited and knew it but he shows up anyway. He will complain about the music the whole time while drinking wine and take his guitar to try and play wonderwall for everyone, even though nobody asked. Lae’zel will lock him on the balcony at some point during the night.

Gortash | Cheap Vodka

He was also not invited. He was told explicitly he was not but what can you do.... His shirt is way too open on his chest, he wears way too much cologne and his pockets are full of condoms. He tries to get into Shadowheart’s pants all night, refilling her glass constantly but he’ll end up at Durge's place next door.

Chapter 9

Felix sat at his desk and read Ridgeway’s report for the fourth time. Magellan was damaged and several crewmembers injured when the artifact tried to make a break for it.

I am relying really, REALLY heavily on the entire “trust the process” for the subplot(s) that are taking place on earth right now. Mainly because I seriously don’t know what they expect for the people on earth to do… Other than to simply be informed about what’s going on. 

Eugene had been honest about the compensation as well. Felix’s first payday had been an eye-opening experience, not that he had any idea of how to spend it. People accustomed to lean times generally reacted in one of two ways to a sudden cash windfall. Either they take great care to ensure that it lasts, or they spend it as quickly as possible to get back to more familiar financial territory. 

I’m serious; I don’t give a fucking shit about ANY of this right now. 

An impressive array of recording devices and passive sensors switched on and started taking notes.

Chapter 9 summary: While all of that is going on in deep space… We jump over to Felix going to a local seaman-themed bar with Jeffrey. What does this have to do with the aliens, you might ask? I am also asking the same fucking question. I seriously don’t know what the point of any of this was, since it had nothing to do with the literal alien artefact. Like hm… what do readers want to see more of? Some random side character failing to pick up women? OR LITERAL FIRST CONTACT?!

At the end of the chapter, for no fucking reason at all, the narration does jump back to Maggie and her crew. They’ve got the artefact strapped in now, and are working on creating a signal jammer to stop it from sending out things anymore. Then they start to head off again.

Chapter 10

In the timescale of the cosmos, it would soon swell to many times its present size as a prelude to its ultimate destruction in a titanic explosion, vaporizing itself completely. Too big even to leave behind an infinite well. 

Look, I’m down for a good space documentary as much as the next person. 

But there is an entire. Mother. Fucking. Page. Of. This. SHIT. 

I am so fucking done with this book. I have 35 more chapters left to go. 

There was always more for a frontier manager to do, and many larims to go before he could sleep.

Chapter 10 summary: Some dude named D’armic contemplates an alien species. At least this is more interesting than clowns in DC going to get drunk… But I’m still kind of scratching my head over what this has to do with the main plot with the Maggie and her crew.

The one next to him is Mk, it's fanart for @pittdpeaches Fic on ao3 called Couch Crasher. It's not done yet but who am I gate keep this Portys handsome face? (Seriously I keep getting shocked by the fact that I drew this, like, is it normal to find your own drawing attractive?) So I guess heres a peek.

As you can see, for portys design I straight up got rid of all the reds and yellows that Mk's always wearing. Think of it as porty trying to differentiate himself from mk as much as possible so people stop getting confused.

I will finish it...someday I think.
