The Heart Sutra
Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, meditating deeply on Perfection of Wisdom, saw clearly that the five aspects of human existence are empty, and so released himself from suffering. Answering the monk Sariputra, he said this:
Body is nothing more than emptiness, emptiness is nothing more than body.
The body is exactly empty, and emptiness is exactly body.
The other four aspects of human existence --feeling, thought, will, and consciousness --are likewise nothing more than emptiness, and emptiness nothing more than they.
All things are empty:
Nothing is born, nothing dies, nothing is pure, nothing is stained, nothing increases and nothing decreases.
So, in emptiness, there is no body, no feeling, no thought, no will, no consciousness.
There are no eyes, no ears, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind.
There is no seeing, no hearing, no smelling, no tasting, no touching, no imagining.
There is nothing seen, nor heard, nor smelled, nor tasted, nor touched, nor imagined.
There is no ignorance, and no end to ignorance.
There is no old age and death, and no end to old age and death.
There is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no end to suffering, no path to follow.
There is no attainment of wisdom, and no wisdom to attain.
The Bodhisattvas rely on the Perfection of Wisdom, and so with no delusions, they feel no fear, and have Nirvana here and now.
All the Buddhas, past, present, and future,

Could I bother you with asking for a Bonrin drabble where Bon says something that reminds him of when he saw his Mom and Dad's past and kinda being panicky bc he doesn't want to be like Satan. Bon then comforts him. Thank you
Dear anon, you are no bother at all! I am always happy to get Bonrin prompts <3
Pairing: Bon/Rin
Summary: They were supposed to be studying, but a simple turn of phrase has Rin stuck in bad memories and panicking about just what he is.
— — — — — — — — — —
It was all so stupid. Just a passing phrase that wasn’t supposed to be a big deal, but now Rin was crouched in the corner, fisting his hair, hyperventilating as his tail lit with flames and his stupid horns tried to grow.
“Hey,” Ryuuji was crouched a few feet away, careful not to crowd up on him and make him feel trapped. Careful to give Rin an exit if he needed it, even while he tried to draw nearer to the demon that was Rin.
Rin gave his head a hard and panicked shake that sent a little flare of flames through the air. Ryuuji stopped his advance and lowered his hand to the floor. Both of his hands were palm up, a subtle way to show he wasn’t a threat, because Ryuuji had experience at coaxing down a dangerous demon. Rin had given him lots of experience on that because he was horrifyingly dangerous.
“Can you talk?”
Rin shook his head again. It hurt trying to hold all the flames in. Trying to hold both halves of himself together and fight off the part that wanted to burn and yell.
The part of him that was Satan. Mephisto had called him on it while they watched Rin’s parents, and he hadn’t been able to deny it then and he couldn’t deny it now. He was Satan’s son.
“Alright. Rin,” Ryuuji called shifting from a crouch into the lotus position he usually assumed when meditating. “Then I want you to focus on breathing.”
The chant was quiet but familiar. Rin could focus on the sounds and the times when Ryuuji inhaled instead of the loud roaring in his head.
“Gaté, gaté, paragaté, parasamgaté. Bodhi. Svaha.”
Rin timed his inhale with Ryuuji’s and blew out a long and slow breath while Ryuuji repeated the chant. Rin had asked about it once, and Ryuuji had explained it in a long and excited ramble. All Rin really remembered was that it was called the heart sutra, and he liked that. Liked the idea of finding calm with the heart.
Rin wasn’t sure how many times Ryuuji repeated it, but eventually the tight pain in his chest had eased and he wasn’t clenching his hair anymore. The fire faded and his body relaxed back against the wall.
With a weird sort of sixth sense, Ryuuji’s eyes popped open at that moment. (It wasn’t a sixth sense. The heat of the fire had simply faded.)
“Better?” He asked softly, meeting Rin’s eyes but not making any moves to draw close. Always careful and patient.
Rin nodded stiffly and wrapped his arms around his legs. He knew what was coming next.
“What caused it?”
Yep. He’d known what was coming next. “Nothing,” Rin tried, smiling toothily and telling himself to let go of his legs and stand up.
“You know you’re a shit liar. Now tell me the truth or tell me no. What caused it?”
Rin could say no, and Ryuuji would be upset, but the conversation would drop. But…
But the worry would be there and it would happen again, and while most of Rin was terrified, part of him wanted to know what Ryuuji would say.
“It’s stupid?” He mumbled as a kind of compromise. Ryuuji perked up and scooted closer.
“Didn’t look stupid.”
Rin huffed and curled up tighter. “You said you’d be proud.”
Ryuuji’s brows drew together in a confused furrow. “Yeah?”
Rin shook his head because he already knew he was going to do a bad job of explaining this, and it was so frustrating to not be able to explain himself. How could you possibly explain that a simple phrase had made you feel like you were watching your parents fucked up life again? How did you explain that one moment you’d been avoiding homework and grouching about your boyfriend’s imminent departure and the next you were back in that horrible lab and you were watching your father destroy everything. Watching yourself kill in some messed up intention to protect and everything about yourself seemed to point to you being just like Satan?
Rin shoved his face between his knees. “I’m just like him.”
“I don’t know what caused it, but you’re not.”
Didn’t it say a lot that Rin didn’t have to explain ‘who’ he was like? “Am too.”
Ryuuji’s hand settled on his arm, still leaving him with a side to escape to, but not being tentative in its touch. His hand wrapped around Rin’s bicep, squeezing a little before sliding up to Rin’s shoulder.
“No you’re not. I don’t know why that set you off, but you’re not like him. Or have you forgotten we’ve all met him? I can bring the others in on this argument now and they’ll all back me up. You’re not that dick.”
Rin turned to press his face between Ryuuji’s shoulder and neck because it felt safer than his knees, and he wanted to believe Ryuuji.
“Stop beating yourself up about this.” Ryuuji’s arm wrapped around his back, hugging him close and firm. Never shying away even through Rin could easily ignite right now and kill him. Satan had tried to do that with Yuri. He’d even tried to sit back and watch as she was torn apart.
“I can hear you thinking negative things, Rin.” Ryuuji’s free hand moved to his hair and brushed soothingly through the locks. “Stop that. Say it with me. You are not Satan.”
“You are not Satan,” Rin muttered, knowing he wasn’t going to get away with it.
“Rin.” Ryuuji tugged on his hair. Not quite enough to hurt, but enough to let him know he was thoroughly caught out. “Do it for real.”
Rin barely whispered the words. They weren’t louder than a breath, and it was still hard to manage that much. “I am not Satan.”
“Yeah, just like that.” Ryuuji hugged him closer. “Again?”
“I am not Satan.”
“Again.”
He said it a bit louder, and got another hug.
“One more time, loud as you can.”
“I am not Satan!”
“Hell yeah you’re not! And you and me, we’re gonna kick his ass. We’re gonna kick his ass for all the shit he did, for all the shit you had to watch, and for all the shit he’s caused now.”
“I know, but…” Rin hid his face in Ryuuji’s neck again.
“But nothing. You’re not him. You make mistakes, we all do, and ya get mad, so do I, but that doesn’t make you him. You being his son doesn’t make you him. You’re better than him.” Ryuuji hugged him tight, using the hand in Rin’s hair to press him close, and it was easy to breathe in Ryuuji’s warm and comforting scent like this. It wrapped around him like a blanket, merging with the warmth of Ryuuji’s firm belief and the comfort of being held.
“You’re not him,” Ryuuji promised again. “We’ll figure out what caused this, and we’ll work it out, but right now, you just gotta focus on breathing with me, and believing that you’re not him.”
“I-I’ll try.”
Ryuuji blew out a long breath. “Okay. You trust me?”
“Yes?”
“Think I’m smart?”
“Yes?”
“I’m going to overlook that both of those yeses were questions,” Ryuuji pinched his hip and made him squeak out a startled giggle, “Then trust me. I say you’re not Satan. You’re not like him at all.”
It made no sense. It was still the same sentence, still the same phrase and meaning, but it felt different. It was easier to trust Ryuuji than trust himself. At least for now.
“Okay,” he murmured, and then a bit louder. “Okay.”
Ryuuji nodded decisively. “Good. Now come on. We’re gonna finish that assignment and then I’m taking you out for Sukiyaki.”
Rin held on a moment longer while he whined dramatically. Trust Ryuuji? He… he could that. He could trust him on this.
I’m not Satan.
He sat next to Ryuuji at the desk and picked the pencil up to focus on the problem that had frustrated him so much a few minutes ago. There were singe marks on his paper, but Ryuuji wasted no time in getting him a fresh one.
I’m not Satan, he thought as he grabbed Ryuuji’s hand in his free one, and I’m not alone.

* Emptiness is the usual translation for the Buddhist term Sunyata (or Shunyata). It refers to the fact that no thing -- including human existence -- has ultimate substantiality, which in turn means that no thing is permanent and no thing is totally independent of everything else. In other words, everything in this world is interconnected and in constant flux. A deep appreciation of this idea of emptiness thus saves us from the suffering caused by our egos, our attachments, and our resistance to change and loss.
Note: Perfection of Wisdom is a translation of Prajnaparamita. The full title of this sutra is The Heart of Prajnaparamita Sutra.
