So just finished watching the SAG Awards. It was my first time sitting through a whole award show and it was amazing. Man, my heart is filled with so much respect and adoration for this community. So many great acting, so many great works of art, so many great speeches, so many great dreams and great stories of making them come true. I feel like the SAG Awards are such an important event because everyone that is a part of it holds so much love for the community and their job and coworkers. Maybe it was rose-tinted but that's what I saw, and I'm so happy to have seen it. It was such a beautiful 2 and a half hours !! Filled with so many of my favorite people !! Thank god for humans' art and creativity and communication and empathy and struggles and love and affection !!

And for Drew Starkey. I screamed an inappropriate amount of times during this. My neighbors probably thought all the Ghostfaces were having a torturing marathon on me or something.

I’m watching Splash (1984) which is a romcom about a guy who falls in love with a mermaid, and when she chooses a human name she chooses Madison and guy says “that’s not a real name, but alright” which seems to imply that Madison was not a name until at least the 80’s and all girls named Madison are actually named after the mermaid. thought you should know

The decay curves are actually very similar, just starting 50 years apart.

Gary peaked in 1951, was half of that peak in 1962, a quarter of that peak in 1973, and and one-eighth of that peak in 1985. So Gary's half-life is about 11 years.

Meanwhile, Madison peaked in 2001, was half that peak in 2012/13, and was just above a quarter of that peak in 2023. So Madison's half-life is about 11 or 12 years.

Give it another 50 years, and Madison will be as obscure as Gary is today.

What do you mean "Gary for women"?

The name "Gary" only became a common given name in the 1930s, during the peak of the career of Gary Cooper, a golden age Hollywood star

Gary Cooper was, to the extent of anyone's knowledge, the first instance of Gary as a first name (like Madison it was only used as a last name before then). His given name was Frank Cooper but early in his career a casting director suggested he adopt a stage name to avoid getting confused with other actors named Frank Cooper. Said casting director decided to name him after her hometown, Gary, Indiana, and he liked it so it stuck. Honestly I think the most bizarre part of this story is that unlike Madison, which has remained a popular girls name even after Splash (1984) had faded from the popular consciousness, the popularity of the name Gary seems to have been completely dependent on the popularity of Gary Cooper because it's been dropping precipitously ever since Cooper stopped being a go-to leading man back in the early 50s.
