R.I.P. Bo$$
Detroit rapper Bo$$ has died at age 54. Bo$$ was the first woman to be signed to Def Jam West. DJ Quik discovered her after she relocated to Los Angeles after high school and put her on "Mai Sista Izza Bitch" with AMG. Russell Simmons heard the song and signed Bo$$ to a deal with Def Jam West. Her 1993 debut album Born Gangstaz produced two number-one rap hits "Deeper" and "Recipe Of A Hoe." Bo$$ had the image of a rough street dweller but her album's intro revealed her middle-class origins that included a Catholic School education, ballet, and piano classes. In 1993, there were no other women rappers posing with guns and wearing straitjackets in their videos. Simmons and his marketing team had crafted Bo$$ into the first woman gangsta rapper. Fans did not care that the image was false because Bo$$'s rap skills and charisma in front of the camera sold the show. AMG, MC Serch, Jam Master Jay, and Erick Sermon were amongst the producers who made Born Gangstaz a classic. DJ Premier posted to Instagram to give his condolences and he revealed that they did a remix of "Deeper" that was never released.
She relocated to Houston, Texas in the mid '90s to work with rapper Ricardo Royal aka Coco Budda and they had a personal relationship that produced a son. Def Jam rejected the demos she recorded and dropped her from the label. She spent the rest of the '90s working as a radio DJ with a hip-hop show on KKDA-FM. By the end of the '90s she was battling kidney failure and her relationship with Royal ended. In 2001, she worked on Krayzie Bone's Thug On Da Line album. She released her Six Million Dollar mixtape in 2004. Her health issues escalated in 2011 and she reached out to the Facebook community for a kidney donor. In 2017, she had a stroke and by 2021 a GoFundMe was created to help pay for a medical procedure. The fundraiser surpassed the $15,000 goal. Bun B posted about Bo$$'s passing on his Instagram page and Jermaine Dupri, 9th Wonder, The D.O.C., Mia X, Chuck D, and Slim Thug left comments. Any woman rapper who has rapped about the violent aspects of streetlife has some kind of direct or indirect link back to Bo$$.

Bo$$: “Deeper” (1993)
One of two hits from Bo$$ that scored the top of the charts, the other “Recipe Of A Ho”, but “Deeper” would always stand out as her most well-known. Her career happened when she moved from Detroit to the West coast and was discovered by DJ Quik for a verse before being signed by Def Jam and released her only record Born Gangstaz. Well, that one’s an overstatement. Despite being accomplished in dance, musicianship, and completing two years of business in college, her gangsta’ life didn’t kick in until her and DJ Dee moved to Los Angeles to experience being homeless, slinging drugs, violence and gang warfare. That’s what they ran with and took it from there. Whether you care or not about Bo$$’ legitimacy, “Deeper” is a great single which a vexed Lichelle Marie Laws lets it all out on being harassed, bothered, and taken advantage of, as a female gangsta’. It helped that there’s lots of sampling gold to be found here with “90% Of Me Is You” by Gwen McCrae (’74), "Under the Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers ('91), “I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby” by Barry White (’73), “Promised Land” by Dennis Brown (’79) and even a soundbyte from Axel Foley from Beverly Hills Cop.
New York’s Hot 97 used this instrumental for Mega Banton’s “Soundboy Killing” (’93), meaning no physical version of that exists.

a soundtrack for a film abt auggie 🎧
don’t turn me from your door / john lee hooker: opening theme, shows august traveling from street to street, trying to survive. these scenes would rlly illustrate his loneliness but also his heart. sharing his food with others, sharing their space when so many ostracize them.
the hardest / gasoline: very combat-oriented. he’s scrapping with bullies. he’s tending to his battle wounds and cleaning his pocket-knife. there’s definitely a scene where auggie stabs a cop.
questions / gospel gangstaz: head bowed, hands clasped in prayer. a quiet, introspective scene.
innocent at once / fat jon: someone has given him a place to sleep and hot food. he is guarded at first, keeping a blade under his pillow, skipping meals. as days pass, he finds himself conflicted by their kindness, torn between his hope for family and his fear of abandonment.
runaway train / soul asylum: he has a nightmare and runs away, convinced his presence in another’s life is a burden instead of a blessing.
song for my father / madlib: august is looking at a polaroid. 7 yr old august sits atop his dad’s shoulders. both grin into the camera. as he holds the photo, he’s talking abt what an amazing person his old man was.
song of good hope / glen hansard: healing- vibes. auggie coming to trust the individual(s) that have been looking after him. he hugs them for the first time.
skipping rocks / oddisee: honestly just soft vibes. auggie is playing make-believe with someone he sees as family. they’re making blanket forts and drawing and reading bedtime stories. the scene is just auggie getting to be a kid.
sometimes i still feel the bruise / the mountain goats: ending scene. august’s trauma isn’t Suddenly Gone. although he has a support system, healing will be a continuous and non-linear journey for him.
stay alive / josé gonzález: credits song.
