Oh yeah. I’m SO hype for Luffy I love owls, and Suwa looks cool (also the website says she’s popular with boys and girls so. Bi baseball queen?)

I have no faith with how they’re going to be written because well-written mobile games tend to be the exception rather than the rule and the marketing is already handicapping them by putting them next to the p5 cast but like

DPxP5 - Skin-Deep Beauty

Ann has always been hyperaware of how people look at her.

Disapproving looks from teachers and peers. Smirks and ogles from boys. Jealous glares from girls. Stares from Kamoshida. Curiosity from Ren. Worry from Ryuji. Admiration from Yusuke.

She wasn’t naive enough to think that Amity Park would be much different. So walking through the halls that first week, she doesn't pay them much mind.

The nerdy crowd in awe. The jocks scouting their new ‘prey’. Double-takes from just about every underclassman at the school.

Most of it is due to her odd company - turns out the son of a family of ghost hunters, a hardcore eco-goth, and a self-proclaimed lady’s man/tech geek have a bit of a reputation. All outcasts in one way or another. Something that she and the others from Shujin easily connect with. They decide to stick together as a band of seven by the end of that first day. And eventually, eyes fall off of them.

Only one crowd was unfazed by her company - or rather, incensed by it. The popular girls - or the 'A-listers' as Sam liked to call them, with all the sarcasm and derogation she can muster.

From what she's said, they’ve barely calmed down since freshman year. Cheerleaders, dating the bullying jocks, obsessed with their looks and new trends, catty and shallow bullies in their own right… They're walking stereotypes, honestly.

And Ann can feel the insecurity in every glare. It’s almost comical.

Still, she barely gives them a passing glance. And advises Sam to do the same. After all, she's dealt with worse.

A comment that gets a look of curiosity and concern to her host sister's face, but she doesn't press the issue.

Eventually, Ann is caught by herself at her locker before lunch one day. And approached by the little clique.

“Heeyy~! Ann, right?” The head of the group of girls - Paulina - calls over, her tone sickly sweet. "You should totally sit with us at lunch today!"

Ann gives the girls a polite smile. “Sorry, I promised to sit with my friends today. Maybe tomorrow-?”

“You’re joking, right?” That blunt interruption makes Ann pause, her polite smile dropping a bit. “Those losers are your ‘friends’? Come on, you’re way too good for them.”

Ann’s expression twists a bit. “Excuse me?”

Paulina chuckles a bit. “No, I get it! New school, new people, new country - you don’t know how things work here! So let me tell you; you’re settling for the bottom-feeders. I mean, what can they give you that we can’t?

That gets her to scowl, a spark of anger in her eyes as she turns toward the girls. “For one, actual friendship. I’ve known most of that group for years, while I’ve known you for five minutes. And already you’re putting them down to try and make yourself look better?”

Paulina actually looks shocked by that response, blinking for a moment before she matches that scowl on Ann’s face. “I’m doing you a favor, newbie!”

Ann scoffs, fighting the urge for her eyes to roll back into her skull. “Yeah, right. I’m not interested. Not today; not ever.”

The girls scoff right back, offended. Like she should care. The blonde in the group - Star? - she growls something about her ‘regretting that’ before the group finally walks off in a huff.

Ann sighs, mumbling to herself in Japanese as she finishes up at her locker. Just venting remaining frustrations to herself. Once she finishes at her locker and bumps into Sam on the way to the cafeteria, there’s a smile back on her face, eager to chat up her host sister to forget that little encounter.

Sam doesn’t tell her that she heard the whole thing from down the hall. But she certainly smiles wider as Ann walks with her to lunch.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (Sega Genesis)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters was released by Konami for the Sega Genesis in 1993, and is a completely different game, with a different story, than either the SNES or NES version.

Four clone versions of the Turtles appear and, what else, kidnap Splinter. The real Ninja Turtles then go on a trek across the galaxy to get him back. If I'm to give this game any credit, it's that at least this time April does not get kidnapped and is even a playable character! So there's that - probably the only nice thing I'll say about this game. I would mention that it's cool that you can play as Casey Jones, but he actually kind of sucks in the game, so never mind.

Of course, I'm not sure how much of it is that he sucks as a main or because the fighting mechanics are just broken or janky. That's my biggest gripe - the fighting feels so stilted, which is not helped by the bad frame rate (surprising for Genesis). The music and sound is a garbled mess, although I do love the music that plays during the character select screen.

The graphics are pretty drab, but I like the trippy, alien backgrounds for most of the levels. Overall, this is not only an inferior version of Tournament Fighters, compared with the SNES version, but a pretty bad fighting game in general.

I was talking to galaxy-turtle-genesys (my internet bestie) about if Kaito was in Joker’s situation with the calling cards would he take over all calling card duties, let the one most hurt and involved write the calling card what Joker does or let them write the first draft then work with them to write the official card. (We chose this option. It lets him privately flex to friends and allies but also shows more of his more subtle understated and genuine kindness.) Love to see what y’all think.

Ooooh, definitely! Especially if there’s an image to upkeep, I think it makes the most sense to go over the card just to ame sure it fits the theme. But also I he wouldn’t be too inclined to take someone’s voice away, so editing the first draft makes a lot of sense.

My girlfriend asked me to make her a list of works of fantasy and science fiction so should could feel keyed into references when they come up in conversation. She wanted to feel more grounded in these genres, which she likes, but hasnt made the effort to be on top of everything.

I was happy to compile the most important names, but told her it couldn’t be a short list because recognizing the works of today means honoring their origins, which goes way back into our past. 

What’s below is my best effort to include what I assess to be the most culturally relevant becoming, tempering my favorites, and trying to keep it from being totally overwhelming. I’ve left off works from the past five to ten years because it can take a span of time before we're aware the effects new ideas may have. Felt like sharing here in case you or your friends want a crash course on the bedrock of our imagined landscape. I do try to be globally aware, however this list will reflect my bias as a white, straight, male who grew up in the States. List of Kaiju Movies Between Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) and Godzilla (2014)

Despite the lack of Godzilla movies, this sure was a weird, experimental decade for the kaiju genre and I think it doesn’t get enough recognition. The movies I could count are:

Ultraman: The Next (2004) - A standalone new origin of the classic japanese hero.

Reigo: The Deep-Sea Monster vs. the Battleship Yamato (2005) - A Godzilla-esque aquatic reptile battles the famous japanese WW2 ship the night before its historic destruction.

Negadon: The Monster from Mars (2005) - A cgi-animated 25-minutes short homage movie where a giant robot fights a weird alien giant monster.

Chousei Kantai Sazer-X the Movie: Fight! Star Warriors (2005) - Based on the "Chouseishin” tokusatsu series by Toho, probably better know because the Gotengo is in it and for re-using the scarpped design of Heisei Mechanikong.

King Kong (2005) - Don’t know if it really counts but hey, it’s King Kong.

Gamera the Brave (2006) - Probably needs no introduction but still. A love letter to the Gamera movies of the 60s and 70s as well as a great coming of age story.

The Host (2006) - Not to be confused with the not-Twilight movie. An amazing south korean film about a family trying to rescue their daughter from a weird mutated fish monster that kidnapped her.

Ultraman Mebius & Ultraman Brothers (2006) - Ultraman’s 40th anniversary celebration movie.

Big Man Japan (2007) - A BIZARRE AF documentary-ish movie about a summo hero guy who can turn giant and that protects Japan from some of the weirdest kaiju ever.

D-War (2007) - From the director of the 1999 Yonggary remake (aka “Reptilian”), this movie about an evil giant serpent dragon and a whole army of monsters is insane, cheesy and never slows down. Supposedly it’s getting a sequel in 2020.

Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit (2008) - A parody/satire sequel to the 1967 movie Guilala. Strangely it uses stock-footage from the original.

Cloverfield (2008) - The movie that had a crazy ARG associated with it, that seeked out to create a real american equivalent of Godzilla, and that re-popularized found footage movies.

Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers (2008) - Notable for having the actors of the 4 original ultras (their human hosts/forms that is) reprising their roles.

Geharha: The Dark and Long Hair Monster (2009) - A short funny homage to kaiju movies in general. Instant classic.

Demeking, The Sea Monster (2009) - Haven’t seen it but the monster is a cool weird choral snail thing.

Deep-Sea Monster Raiga (2009) -A far more comedic sequel to Reigo (2005), this time with a bipedal, giant-clawed blue Godzilla-esque kaiju.

Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends (2009) - All the ultra heroes and all the ultra kaiju ever duke it out non-stop. Not only a sequel to all Ultraman series, but allso to the kaiju-centered spin-off Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle.

Death Kappa (2010) - A raunchy comedic movie starring the classic turtle/duck youkai who turns giant and fights another monster. The creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion plays the villain.

Monsters (2010) - The movie that put Gareth Edwards on the map before he directed Godzilla 2014. It shows a world dominated by giant octopus-like monsters that is very gloomy but doesn’t lack a sense of wonder at all.

Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial (2010) - Sequel to MMBUGL that further establishes Belial as the evil Ultraman.

Ultraman Saga (2012) -Ultraman Dyna, Ultraman Zero from the previous two movies, and best boy Ultraman Cosmos join forces to fight baby Zetton.

Pacific Rim (2013) - Pacific Rim.

Special mention to the thai movie Garuda from 2004, the 2010 animated movie Firebreather, the Sharktopus movies produced by Roger Corman, the Mega Shark movies by The Assylum, and all 21 Super Sentai theatrical releases that came in this period but that I’m too much of a coward to look up if they qualify for this list.
