There'a really no reason to be shocmed that names change, all languages that have noun classes do it, hence why Caesars last words in the play are "Et tu, Brute?" And not "Et tu, Brutus?" Brutus' name is in the genitive case because he's being called to. If it makes you feel better the h doesnt really have anything to do with it, before it was just a dot, a little marker that let you know but that wasn't convenient for typewriters, no one wants to add like 15 new letters for one language that was actively being killed off.
Also the séimhiú is enturely consistent within its own rule, i before e is broken multiple times in english.
The séimhiú applies to nouns in all tenses and verbs in past tenses and conditional tense, along with all negative statements except the imperative
No one ever gets to make fun of “I before e except after c” ever again.
I just read a several page blog post about how and when to stick an H into Irish words and it doesn’t make any sense.
On a specific set of consonants, if you’re using a specific list of prepositions, using the word “my”, asking someone a question (yes you literally change how you spell and pronounce another persons name apparently. My name is now pronounced gella but only when you ask me a question), or using a feminine noun (did not explain the rules of that) or a feminine adjective (who the fuck is grammatically gendering adjectives) but in some of those cases if it’s a D or an T it DOESNT actually happen…
Then you stick an H after the first letter and change how you pronounce it.
…..in one specific dialect.
And it did not clarify in what tenses this applies. Is it only present tense? All of them? Some but not all?

Cuirtear smaoineamh orm. Cén chaoi nach bhfaca mé "sídhe" mar fhorainm neamh-dhénártha i nGaeilge? Fuaimnítear é cosúil le "sí" agus chonaic me "fey" mar fhorainm i mBéarla, ach ceapann mé go n-oibríonn sé níos fearr i nGaeilge.
Dia dhaoib a chairde, Pope is an t-ainm orm, sídhe/ídhe is m'fhorainmneacha.

I’m just curious about who follows me and for what posts
For the purpose of this poll:
Irish means your family is Irish and/or you consider Ireland your home.
Of Irish descent means one grandparent or further back is Irish and you do not consider Ireland home.
Neither means you don’t have Irish ancestors and you don’t live in Ireland.
#this is purely me being curious and I will share the results afterwards#because I feel like I have both a lot of Irish queers and a lot of non Irish Gaeilgeoirs and I’m not sure how many of ye are here for both#things I post about a lot rather than just one#my own post#gaeilge#aiteach#Irish#queer#poll

The more I read your vaimpírí sa ghaeltacht tag the more desperately I want this to be a book. Or series.
i'm aiming for long-ish short story in the first instance but we'll see how we go lol
#i keep changing my mind about where to start#and going into too much backstory for a short story#so maybe it will be a novella but idk if i'm ready to write that as gaeilge#i am baby gaeilgeoir#and i cannot fucking spell. my spelling is eighteenth century it's awful#vaimpírí sa ghaeltacht

i cant stop thinking about how funny it is that that person said that an italian hero wouldnt be a mob boss. there are two italian characters in overwatch and both of them are dead due to their proximity to organized crime. "blizzard tends to avoid broad offensive stereotypes" all 3 japanese characters are ninjas. the only irish character is a terrorist.

Tbh shoutout to 'dia is mhuire is pádraig duit' I like its style. Uno reverse card it's your turn to talk now
#contextttt 'hi' in irish is 'dia dhuit' (god be with you or something)#which is sometimes answered with 'dia is mhuire duit' (god and mary be with you)#and usually thats where it ends#BUTTTT if u want u can one-up em by saying dia is mhuire is pádraig dhuit (god and mary and patrick be with you)#which serves no purpose other than oneupmanship and making the other person start the conversation. afaik#ive only heard it in the context of irish students who really dont want to start a convo so they say this and it buys them time#but idk im no gaeilgeoir
