Strawberries

Sú talún, meaning strawberry, derives from

Sú comes from Old Irish súg (sap; juice) or from Old Irish suib (berry)  Talún is the genitive form of talamh (earth;  ground). 

The genitive is used here because it is an adjective showing possession or relation—”sap of the earth”

Compare sú craobh (raspberry): “sap of the (tree) branch”

In Scottish Gaelic, sùbh-làir is used:

Sùbh comes from Old Irish suib (berry).  Làir refers also to “earth; ground” 

It is related to Irish lár, meaning “floor” and mainly referring to an interior floor. 

Sú/Sùbh further derive from Proto-Celtic *subi (berry) from Proto-Indo-European *sewH- (“to squeeze out”). Welsh syfi (strawberry) descends from Proto-Celtic *subi. 

I found these two entries in the Etymological Dictionary of Proto-Celtic (Matasović, 2009) to be of interest:

In essence it implies that Proto-Celtic *subi could be a loanword from an unknown origin, through contact with another language; but also points out that the Old Irish suib looks to be Celtic in origin. 

We also can’t ignore the entry for *sutu, which appears undoubtedly related.

This cottagecore forest town is absolutely STUNNING. A lot of effort must have been put into this terraforming, and into creating all the winding paths throughout the island! I had a lot of fun hopping through the cliffs, trying to find the next hidden secret. I’m not sure if this description is really doing it justice honestly, just go visit it! It’s just so intricately designed, and so much fun to experience and explore. TOP. TIER. ISLAND.

So on today's episode of Things I Learned About Irish™, I realised that a strawberry is called sú talún.

Sú = juice. Talún = land. That means that strawberries are

I have some questions for you ghost girl sú talún

1. What was the cause of her death really? Did she died slowly painfully or why was she dead?

2. What was her family like when she was alive? Was it entertaining, Drama, Or Rich?

3. Is she alone by herself in the hotel with no friends? If so, is she very shy to make one? But her only friend is Milly, right?

Answers:

1. I don't know what caused her death. Yes unfortunately she did die slowly.......

2. Her family was poor when she was alive.

3. Yeah she is alone and yes, she very shy. Her only friend is Milly, correct!

You’re the only person I follow that’s also learning Gaeilge so sorry if this is really out of the blue but I just learned that the word(s?) for strawberry is sú talún.... ah yes delicious juice land

oh my god, strawberry. i had the exact same reaction as you but then someone told me that actually the two words when translated into english are actually fucking LAND JUICE
