ive been thinking about the timeline of commentary youtube as a genre

like it got popular initially in the mid-to-late-2010s with it mostly being led by the "big three" of danny gonzalez, drew gooden, and kurtis conner, as well as a few others i'm less familiar with (including cody ko), who all transitioned to youtube from vine as far as i'm aware

this era sort of reached its peak in 2019-2020 when tiktok first became popular and they had a lot of dumb content to react to

around that same time, a ton of other commentary youtubers popped up. danny, drew, and kurtis still felt like the "big three" but there were lots of others now. jarvis johnson, gabi belle, and nickisnotgreen being some of the most prominent (or at least the ones i'm most familar with)

then, with such an oversaturation of commentary content in the early 2020s, the question of what a "commentary youtuber" even is started to arise. different creators took it in different directions: some tried to provide lighthearted, vaguely left-wing socio-political commentary by dunking on prageru videos and andrew tate and stuff (nickisnotgreen, jordan adika), others ended up leaning more towards "reaction" content (jarvis johnson, also nickisnotgreen), and others leaned more towards a video-essay format (gabi belle, d'angelo wallace).

the main issue that sort of arose was the ethics of making fun of people on the internet (since that is, at its core, what commentary youtube is). when it was random guys from vine making fun of like, logan paul or five minute crafts, it was pretty harmless. but now people were just reacting to any weird thing they saw on tiktok, and there were basically three possibilities: 1) the video you're reacting to is just some person doing their own thing and you're being mean, 2) the person you're reacting to is actively harmful and you're only promoting them by making a video about them, or 3) this person is being annoying or wrong on purpose and you're biting the bait by reacting to it.

that last one, the abundance of "rage bait" content on tiktok especially, is really what's been causing the death of commentary youtube in the past couple of years. there's really no point in making videos being like "look at this weird video i found" because so many people are making weird videos specifically TRYING to get people to react to it in that way.

there are, of course, other reasons why the community's been declining. nickisnotgreen got caught up in controversy (and i think danny, drew, and kurtis have all had controversies of their own but i'm not super familiar with those.) others have basically stopped making commentary videos and pivoted to a different medium (ie, jarvis and jordan's podcast, d'angelo wallace fully becoming a video essay youtuber). and then, of course, the nail in the coffin for all of this is cody ko being exposed.

i think, broadly, the genre just ran its course, and there's not much left to make in that format anymore. i'll still enjoy a commentary-style video from time to time, but from the combination of personal issues involving a lot of the main figures in the genre and the oversaturation of content and the lack of fun things to react to anymore, it makes sense that the genre isn't the powerhouse that it used to be.

When Frida Kahlo died, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicerto turn the Blue House into a museum that the people of Mexico could visit to admire the work of the artist. Pellicer selected those of Frida's paintings which were in the house, along with drawings, photographs, books, and ceramics, maintaining the spaces just as Frida and Diego had arranged them to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings, and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Frida in the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms converted into storerooms. This remarkable collection remained hidden for more than half a century. A few years ago the storerooms, wardrobes, and trunks that safeguarded it were opened. The collection of photographs is a treasure that reveals the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the annotations made on them. The collection allows us to speculate about Frida's and Diego's likes and dislikes, and makes it possible to document their family origins. Photography had always been a part of Frida's life. Her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great photographers of Mexico at the beginning of the twentieth century, whose images of colonial architecture and numerous self-portraits have been preserved. Frida's collection constitutes a roll call of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassai, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrel, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gisele Freund, and many others, including Frida Kahlo herself. Are the class sizes of Archambault really 4 classmates each?XD Or is there like a range?

How about Gallatin? What is the usual class size?

The classes at Archambault and Gallatin are tiny. This is partly because I didn't want to have a sea of random names for players to deal with but also that the schools take a lot of pride in small classes because of larger amounts of and more personalised teacher time. Freddie would have been shocked coming from their Fenburg secondary school which was a lot larger; Trevelyan's primary school was similarly much bigger than Gallatin; Hyacinthe is from a smaller town so the size compared to their primary school size wouldn't have been as much of a shock but it was still wildly different.

At Gallatin, classes are less than 10 students (in Creme, your classes have 6-7 people - so you, Gonzalez, Hartmann, Max, Freddie, Delacroix, and Blaise).

At Archambault, there are some big classes, still mostly under 10 students, (which you have with Javi, Beaumont, Dominique, Mai, Yannick, Gabi, and maybe one or two others). They're taught by minor teacher characters (if they're there, this is when Creme MC teacher, Hartmann, and/or Sinclair, Raphael, and Cezara teach. Otherwise, your minor teachers are Anthony and Chiara). There are also fairly regular occasions where fancy academics or various other luminaries come and give lectures. The main classes we spend time with onscreen are the Natural Science, Politics, and Leadership classes with Vere, Clemence, and Pascal though, and they're closer to something like a Cambridge supervision - even tinier.

The Archambault structure (aside from a laissez-faire attitude to exams in some cases, which leads to a lot of problems when students in those cases go to university) is built on similar lines to Gessner University which is intentional because there is a strong Archambault -> Gessner pipeline. An academically able student with a strong and independent work ethic will find the transition from Archambault to Gessner easier and more familiar than students from other schools. The system is built so that a student like Auguste or Beaumont, having been academically successful at Archambault, can walk into a Gessner undergraduate course, succeed there too (assuming no mental or physical health issues arise! which is a big and wrong assumption!), and then walk into managing their inheritance/land or a career of their choosing.
