hi! for feeding tube awareness week -- are you willing to talk about the switch from a single gj tube to g and j tubes? why did you switch, and how was the process of switching over / learning the new setup? does it work better for you, and have there been any downsides?

So I switched from a GJ to a G&J because my gastroparesis causes aggressive and uncontrollable vomiting that can’t always be controlled by venting my G port. I also kept having yeast colonizations pop up in my J port, but not my G port, so we wondered if splitting the tubes would help with the fungal colonies, and it has.

Switching over was hard, but ultimately a great choice for me. I had an open surgery called an open Witzel jejunostomy, where they remove the jejunum to cut it open and create a tunnel structure within the jejunum to hold the jejunostomy tube. This technique was done by an EDS informed surgeon and team to make sure to reinforce all of my guts and such to try and prevent atrophy.

Recovery was about the same length of time as the GJ, despite being a major surgery compared to the GJ. Over time (10mo post op rn) the scar has begun to atrophy because of my hEDS, but I’m still very happy with how it looks.

The learning curve was pretty much nothing because the GJ functions the exact same way, except with a higher displacement rate. It sucks that they have to be changed at different times but the G doesn’t have to be changed under x-ray guidance, and the J doesn’t have to be changed every 3-6mo like a GJ does.

Some people can change their Gs and Js at home depending on placement and anatomy. I cannot do that lol. My J has to be changed by interventional radiology under moderate sedation.

I love my G and J. I’m happy I tried a GJ, but the separate tubes are not a big deal to me, and it’s keeping me out of the hospital.

Why do you need a g tube? Thought this would be a good question to ask if you want to start posting more about it!

That’s an excellent question! I have ARFID (avoidant restrictive food intake disorder) which is an eating disorder characterized by severe sensory issues towards food that limit your diet to such an extent that you don’t get the calories or nutrients you need. An alternative presentation is when people have a fear of choking, vomiting, getting an illness, etc. I’ve had the former symptoms my entire life.

It’s not super common for ARFID to require a feeding tube. Feeding and nutrition therapies can help people gradually expose themselves to new textures and flavours, to the point that they can get adequate nutrition. I spent five years in feeding therapy, three years in eating disorder therapy, and have been seeing a nutritionist for three years, and nothing has worked for me. My weight is dropping, and my doctor and nutritionist have agreed that a g-tube is the next step.

There are different kinds of feeding tubes for different scenarios. A nasogastric tube (NG tube) is a tube that is inserted through the nose, down the throat and into the stomach, with the extra tubing taped to the face. It’s used for short-term feeding (a handful of weeks or months).

A gastrostomy or g-tube is a short tube that’s inserted directly into the stomach from outside the abdomen. It’s held in place by a water-filled balloon that sits against the stomach wall to prevent it from being pulled out. A small “button” sits on the surface of the abdomen, and when you run feeds, a tube is connected to it, then disconnected afterwards, so there’s no tubing dangling around when not in use. G-tubes are for long-term or permanent feeding.

A jejunostomy (j-tube) is a tube inserted through the abdomen into the jejunum (small intenstine). It is used for long-term feeds when the stomach can’t process or absorb nutrients properly.

Sometimes people have a combination GJ-tube, with a j-tube to receive nutrients, and a g-tube to vent excess air or drain excess fluid from the stomach.

How much longer can my body sustain this? I haven’t eaten in days and haven’t stopped throwing up everything I’ve tried to eat for almost a week now. I can’t tolerate the ng feeds bc it’s agonizing on my stomach. I’m dying and I can feel it. I’m not afraid but I’m also not ready…

The plan is for them to either place a G-tube or a J tube. The G-tube may not work because my stomach can’t tolerate anything not even water, but the J tube is further down in the intestines so that sounds more promising.

I came in at 80 pounds and I’ll likely leave weighing even less after all the nonstop vomiting. I’m in so much pain and I’m so uncomfortable. I can’t even stand up or walk unassisted.

When I think about the future, I know that I want children. But what kind of mother would I be if I brought a child into this world, knowing that it would have the same conditions I have, and probably worse.

This is the shit that eats me alive.

I’m either going to die childless, or die and leave a disabled baby alone?

The first one (I'm taking them as one because they are original product and current sequel) is Carnations/Little Wonders by @anyashappytobehere aka waitinginthemilkingweed on AO3. Ahhhhh gosh, I first met this fic back when I was starting to get into Ride The Cyclone, and even if it had OC stuff (thing I don't usually read) I said "fuck it" and- oh my god I feel it changed my life. I'm literally so attached to this story and how this person writes every character including her OCs like Annie 😭😭😭 they manage to like, make the world around them feel alive??? the setting just feels real and I truthfully admire that. just, cheers and please god don't cancel this story because this is one of the longfics I need to have complete. it's sjwiwhwlwhuekeheiwhwi 💓💓💓💓🥹

Then we have @kermitkc ... absolutely every ride the cyclone fic she wrote. but I think I'm going to quote three of them: Sickness and Health, The Perfect Date and Take The Plunge.

Sickness and Health basically got myself breaking down, both /j and /srs. Like the second chapter came out when I was helping at camp and I almost crashed out Infront of a ton of six year olds. Sickness and Health is about Ocean getting sick with pneumonia and how basically this affects both her and Constance's mental health slowly. spoiler: she SURVIVES (thank GOD) but like it is an emotional outburst. I don't have words to describe how this made me feel. I just. Yeah.

The Perfect Date is more simple: Ocean and Constance go on a date and all the shit goes wrong but they still love each other. My Ocean kinnie card slipped a few more times than how I believed it would because this girl is ME lowkey. and connie just wanting the both of them to be equals. OH ALSO this quote:

Constance only squeezes her tighter and tries to blink away the blurry wetness pricking at the corners of her own eyes. She never got more used to Ocean crying—not after scraping her knee on the playground at recess and not after long nights in the hospital with tubes in her nose. andddd finally on the kermitkc list we have Take The Plunge. and okay I don't usually read smut but I read this in a despaired episode of wanting blackrose content and I remember myself crying— I repeat, CRYING—because of a fanfic where two young adults had sex. literally. the plot of Take The Plunge is, in short words, Ocean and Connie having their first time together and finding the wonders of doing love and stuff (before you shoot both kasey and me dead they were 19 in this story 🙌.) The reason I quote this story in the list is that it also elaborates a lot on Connie's SA experience, and how this whole thing means a lot not only for her relationship with Ocean, but also for her own emotional growth. To finish talking about this story, I'm going to quote my favorite part:

“I already had my first time, Ocean.” A first time that was had during a time when things were different. When she thought herself deserving of a whole lot less—hours before her entire life changed forever. A first time she can’t get back. “No,” says Ocean, after a beat. “No, you didn’t.” Constance snaps up to look at her. Her tone is unreadable. Constance fully expects her to get…kind of angry, maybe? Constance realizes Ocean’s fingers are trembling when her thumb starts running across the back of her hand, and she takes in a tremoring breath. “And, I’d hope that’s not what you did with, um…whoever that guy was.” Ocean finally looks up to meet her eyes, and Constance stares right back. andddd finally we have equinox by junoharu. this story revolves on Misha and Ricky's relationship, including a lot of pinning and stuff between them. it's more of a casual read but I absolutely love it. the bad thing is that it was last updated months ago ☹️

I may or may not have gone on a bit of a Butterfly Pig spree in order to deck out (accessorise) my friend Mouse the cat, so now we have matching medical aids!

I painted her crutches blue and hot glued string to the cuffs as straps, and cut a length of black cord off the back of an apron to give her AAC a strap. If you look closely, you can see that she even uses proloquo2go just like me! I love that her inhaler fits in her tiny pocket! I'm going to die of cute overload! /j

The last picture is of a tiny g-tube button. She's having hers placed the same day I get mine. I'm probably going to end up doing overnight pump feeds rather than daytime bolus feeds, so my reward to myself for getting through the surgery will be a tiny matching feed pump. ❤️

This has been one hell of a week. Where do I even begin?

My mother pitches a fit if I don’t eat with the family because it doesn’t feel like I’m “taking part of the family”. Thing is, I am NPO on a feeding tube.

Since I currently have only a “functional” (Most offensive term ever. I can promise you I am not functioning.) condition both professionals and my parents believe I am making a “mountain out of a molehill” and should just get over it and eat.

I also miss food. It’s so rare I eat, not only because of the excruciating pain it causes, but because I have such intense early satiety. I eat a couple bites and I am as full as if I ate a holiday meal. In addition I can feel the food backing up my oesophagus and throat. I have a hard time swallowing too.

So yes I miss food, but I know I cannot eat. Yet my mother’s wrath is not to be trifled with, especially when I am so low on energy. I caved anew ate around a a cup of mashed potatoes and a sliver of homemade sourdough bread.

Well…it was coming out of both my G and J tubes for the next two days. My CNA who helps me daily could see what I ate. It smelled like vomit. (Which I so badly wanted to do due to pain, but I am unable to do so.) I was awful. I was so nauseous. In so much pain. And worse of all I was constipated.

This may be considered TMI, but I don’t care. In multiple tests it’s been documented that I have constant stool burdens at the end of my small intestine and beginning of my colon. I am currently on linzess, but it isn’t helping.

I poop brown smelly water. Even my CNA said this looks like intestinal failure. Yet because I only have a functional diagnosis the ER won’t accept me until I am running a high fever. I have a low grade one, but nope. Still not good enough.

On top of that my feeding pump ( a Kangaroo Joey) stopped working yesterday. I called my feeding tube supplier about sending me a new one. They said it would arrive at noon.

It hadn’t. I called back asking when it would arrive and they said someone signed for it. So I asked all around my apartment complex asking where it was. Nobody said they had it. So I called again. Apparently it SOMEHOW got sent to the wrong place. So they will be sending me one…sometime. Tonight my CNA is going to help me use a gravity bag. I only used one once and it gave me really bad diarrhoea so hopefully we can find a speed that works for me.

So…those on feeding tubes, intestinal failure, and TPN…I need advice. How do I get help? I have been on a feeding tube since January and I am STILL underweight and malnourished. I am not running my full feeds because it burns and the pressure buildup is too much to handle. I already explained about my constant stool burdens and overflow problem. When and how do you bring up the topic of at least trying TPN? How do you get diagnosed with Chronic Intestinal Dysmotility? I know for a fact that is what is going on yet my GI refuses to let me get a Sitz Marker Test because it’s so expensive and intensive. I am suffering and at my whits end and don’t know what to do anymore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Warriors feeding tube propaganda. Ik that’s way out of left field BUT HEAR ME OUT OK‼️‼️

He’s been poisoned so much and while yes, he has a higher tolerance, it’s also DESTROYED his stomach, and his ability to breakdown food (gastroparesis).

The healers in his hyrule can only do so much, and he ends up getting an NG tube (nasal tube). NG tubes aren’t normally given for long term use (>6 weeks), but an NGT is better for him because he fights so much, so it can’t rip out as damaging as a G Tube (port though stomach) could if hit in a fight.

Even more into specifics, I think he would have a mix between Standardized and Blended feeds, and the Robbie/Purah make him a machine port, since before it had to utilize gravity to work. He used to do cyclic feeds (8-12 hrs) during sleep, but does more intermittent feeds (about 1 hour 3-4 times a day, during normal mealtimes) once joining the chain.

(He might even potentially have a J tube, which goes to your small intestine instead of stomach)

He loves to help wild with food, because he can have veryyy small portions, and becomes wilds taste tester. He often matches makeup to his adhesive Wind likes to decorate it/cut out fun shapes whenever he need to replace it.

Also I haven’t had a tube myself, this is based on research and my freind who has one saying smthing to me on a discord call 👍 (if I get shit wrong im genuinely so sorry 😭)
