5 Facts You Didn't Know About Dental Assistants

Those who are in the dental assistant career understand that their duties can range from interacting with patients to scheduling appointments to sterilizing dental instruments in the dentist's office. The exact duties may vary depending on the dental office they practice in as well as the state in which they work. Responsibilities

Dental assistants are responsible for both office work and working with a dentist. As mentioned earlier, the exact job duties vary depending on the office they work in. Some may be responsible for office tasks such as updating medical records, handing out bills, receiving payments, making appointments, greeting patients, and ordering supplies and equipment. People who work primarily in a laboratory may maintain removable appliances, take impressions of the mouth or teeth, or make temporary crowns.

Capabilities

Those who find they do well in this area are typically those who possess the following skills: interpersonal skills, organizational skills, listening skills, and attention to detail. While the exact roles may change from day to day, some aspects remain the same. Dental assistants are always in contact with patients, whether it's in the front office or in an exam room. Therefore, individuals should also have developed “human skills” and compassion for when patients are in extreme pain or nervous or stressed about a visit.

The future

People have been concerned with their appearance for centuries. Today's modern world is no different. As long as people are conscious of their teeth and smile, dental assistants should have employment opportunities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental assistant employment is projected to grow by about 31% between 2010 and 2020. Dental assistants can also begin to take on more responsibilities, allowing dentists to focus on more pressing dental issues.

Dental assistants vs. dental hygienists

These two different jobs are often mistaken for the same position. The tasks of dental assistants are less complicated than those of dental hygienists. Dental assistants take X-rays, hand instruments to the dentists, sterilize instruments, and handle suction and water. On the other hand, dental hygienists don't need as much supervision. They usually work individually to clean and polish teeth and check for sensitivity, oral infections and diseases, and tooth decay. Hygienists are also required to acquire advanced training as assistants.

Higher education

There is no required training for this position as qualifications vary from state to state. However, most states require applicants to complete an accredited program. Often these programs are available at community colleges or can be completed online. Those who complete these programs receive a certificate or diploma to use in their future careers.

I have been thinking about #hgwells recently. The other day I heard a recording the @bbc had found of him, and he sounded like a right #nerd, i.e. one of my peeps😆. I went on to watch the movie he made “The Shape of Things to Come” and it was pretty stunning. His book “The Outline of History” got more me more interested in the #history than all the schooling I ever got in the subject. I also watched the most recent adaption of “War of the Worlds”, which I enjoyed for its period accuracy and visuals, but no much else. Someone needs to do the Jeff Wayne version! Anyway, here is my take on Wells’ vision for the distant future of humanity, the #Morlocks and #Eloi, from “The Time Machine”. Included is an even more ‘evolved’ form of Eloi from an even more distant future (a concept somewhat stolen by Kurt Vonnegut for his novella “Galapagos”). By the year AD 802,701, humanity has evolved into two separate species: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi live a banal life of ease on the surface of the Earth while the Morlocks live underground, tending machinery and providing food, clothing, and inventory for the Eloi. The narration suggests that the separation of species may have been the result of a widening split between different social classes: the Morlocks are the working class who were relegated to working and living underground so that the rich upper class could live in luxury on the surface. With time, the balance of power changed – the hedonistic surface people no longer dominating the underground dwellers, but instead becoming their livestock. Many of Wells’ ideas are centered around class struggles. He considered himself ‘Middle Class’ and was a great advocate for the growth of the middle class. Does simply being active on an online game generate revenue for the developer? Am I contributing to Blizzard’s bottom line by playing Overwatch?

Yes you are. You might not be contributing directly, but you are adding monetary value to their game by playing it. Just by playing the game, you contribute in these ways:

#1: You might spend in the future

People who don’t play won’t spend, period. The more people play long term (weeks, months, years), the more likely they are to eventually spend some money. There is no greater correlation metric between money spent than with time spent playing. We call this time spent playing “Engagement”. By continuing to play, you’re making it more likely that you will relent down the line and spend something. It’s in our best interest to keep you around and playing to eventually reach that point. You might not get there yourself, but the longer players play, the more likely they will eventually give us a few bucks.

#2: You help provide entertainment for other players

Players don’t like playing games (especially multiplayer games) when they’re ghost towns. We need a critical mass of players to pull from in order to keep matches spinning up and running. For things like ranked play, the pool of qualified players is even smaller. Furthermore, many of those players who are playing with you have spent money at some point in the past. If they have a good time, they’ll probably spend some too. By playing with other players, selling or buying stuff on the auction house, interacting with other players, you provide other players reasons to continue playing. 

#3: You help provide useful data about player behavior

We’re always watching what you do. We keep track of what maps you like, what game modes you participate in, what characters or classes you like to play, where you spend most of your time in game, and so on and so forth. While one player’s behavior data isn’t super useful, having millions of players’ aggregated behavior data is really useful. We can use it to figure out elements of the game that aren’t working. That might mean figuring out whether Bastion’s turret form is really OP, whether Genji really does need a nerf, where the pain points are in a specific stage, or even additional things that we can sell to players that they want. 

#4: You are easier to reach with cross-promotional offers than non-players

Overwatch is fun and all, but what if Blizzard wanted to drum up interest in their BlizzCon Virtual Ticket? Well, they can show advertisements for it in the game and it reaches even non-paying players like you that play regularly. Some number of these players might decide that the ticket price is worth it and buy it. Or maybe Blizzard wants to get more players for Diablo Immortal, so they offer a special Overwatch skin or something to players if they download and register Diablo Immortal. Some number of those players will continue on to keep playing Diablo Immortal and possibly spending there too. You’re already invested here, whereas somebody else who doesn’t play at all like EvilDeathCrab would not be. It’s much easier to convince you to engage with something than it is to convince him.

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. Overall, non-paying players like you provide a good amount of value to the player community and developers by playing. That value might not be direct monetary contributions, but it’s still valuable nonetheless because it indirectly contributes to monetary contributions. We want as many players as we can to fill the servers and engage with the content. Some of them will pay, some of them will not, but it’s an ecosystem where we try to provide enough value and fun to all segments of the player base.
