How old is Gohan (or DB fans can't read and Toriyama can't (couldn't) count)
It’s common knowledge people disagree with how old Gohan was during the Cell Games and during the Buu arc. His usual name for those two sections of the story, Teen Gohan and Adult Gohan, don’t seem to make any sense.
Let’s start counting. (TLDR at the end with a ref chart)
When Gohan is first introduced, Bulma asks his age and he states he is four years old.
Tumblr media
The training period between Raditz’s death and Vegeta and Nappa’s arrival is shortened because the two Saiyans arrive one full month earlier than anticipated (making the training period 11 months long and not a year long).
Tumblr media
Kaio-Sama knew the Saiyans would arrive the next day, but forgot to factor in how long Goku would take to travel back from Snake Way. Oops.
That makes Saiyan invasion Gohan probably five years old.
Bulma, Gohan and Krillin land on Namek about forty days later (2 days at the Hospital, five days to repair the Namekian ship, one month to travel to Namek and the entire stay is about a week).
Tumblr media
It'll take 5 days to repair
Tumblr media
Let's meet in 10 days (repair + learn Namekian + Gohan and Krillin need to be released form the hospital)
Tumblr media
It’s been 7 days since we left, we still have 20 days to arrive to Namek.
The forty-ish days are confirmed when Bulma says there are 20 days left until they arrive on Namek, and at the same time, Vegeta arrives to Freeza Planet 79 “18 days after his departure from Earth.” (chapter 246). If Gohan hadn’t turned five during his 11 months of training with Piccolo, now it’s been 12 months so for sure he’s five.
Tumblr media
Same chapter, Vegeta arrives to his destination 18 days after leaving Earth.
When everyone is transported back to Earth from Namek about a week later (6 days for Goku to arrive + a little rest time after the Ginyu fight), Gohan is still five years old.
When they are transported to Earth from Porunga’s last wish and Guru dies, transferring his power to Moori, the Namekian Dragon Balls are inactive, so they need to wait one Namekian year to use them again. A Namekian year is 130 days.
Everyone waits at Capsule Corp. They wait for 130 days (one Namekian year), summon Porunga and make three wishes: bring Krillin’s soul to Earth, resurrect him, and resurrect Yamcha.
Tumblr media
(Notice Gohan's hair, as well as Bulma's hair has grown quite a bit in these 130 days)
They wait another 130 days, resurrect Tenshinhan and Chaozu, and the third wish is used to transport the Namekians to a new planet Namek. This means the Namekians stayed 260 days, or about eight months and a half at Capsule Corp.
Then, the panel says “about a year later”, when everyone senses Freeza. If we add that to the 8 months and change from before, we can round it to about 20 months (that’s almost two years!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How old is Gohan then? He was quite a bit over five years old before, we can safely assume that if he’s not seven years old, he’s really close to it (his hair has also grown!)
Considering Capsule Corp is having a Barbecue and Krillin and Gohan complain about being "hot" (Trunks pops out a fridge with cold drinks), it's safe to assume the Meca Frieza thing happens during the summer.
The next timeskip is “about three years, on May 12th”, but let’s keep some elements in mind from that section. We need to take note of some elements we know from 17yo Trunks and what we see in the Android Saga:
For the first trip to the past, Trunks comes from “roughly twenty years in the future”.
Trunks will be born “two and a half years from now” (= he's 17 years old).
The cyborgs/androids appear “in roughly three years, on May 12th.”
We don’t officially know Gohan's birthday from the manga, but we do know it from the Anime as being May 18th (he celebrates it during the 9 days between the announcement on TV and the Cell Games). Due to the “about three years” skip, Gohan is about to turn 10 years old at the start of the Android Saga.
His stay in the Room of Spirit and Time lasts under a year. Give or take a few weeks to his biological age, during the Cell Games, Gohan’s biological age is almost 11 years old, while his calendar age is 10. Hardly a “teen”!
Now onto the 7 year timeskip.
This is where things get complex, and we need to state some key elements: the school year starts in April in Japan, and the Tenkaichi Budokai always happens on May 7th, which means the Saiyaman Arc happens during the month between the first day of class and the Tournament.
Tumblr media
However… The manga does not say it’s been seven years. It says “years have passed” and “Gohan turned 16”.
Tumblr media
Here’s the big question: Is Gohan about to celebrate his 17th calendar birthday, or his biological one? Or is he actually about to turn 16 and the panel just anticipates his upcoming birthday?
We don’t know. This means we have no idea how long has passed from this information alone. This is why we need to find other clues.
Thankfully, we took note of some dates and other elements prior, and to solve the mystery, we will use Trunks.
Trunks is stated to be 8 years old, and Goten is stated to be 7 years old during the tournament.
Tumblr media
Trunks was born “in about two and a half years” after the Meca Frieza situation, and the Androids attacked “in about three years”, making baby Trunks between infant and ten-ish months old by the time the Cell Games rolled around (both main timeline Trunks and Future Trunks have different birthdays actually, but they’re both in the second half of the year so here it does not matter).
As such, Trunks’ birthday has to be after the Cell Games (he holds his head but can't walk, he grabs but can't talk, making him younger than a year old). This means his birthday has to be after the Tenkaichi Budokai (which is always on May 7th). That means Trunks will be turning nine years old during that calendar year (otherwise the Announcer would say "he's about to turn 8" or something like that).
If you believe Trunks may have been a year old already by the time the Cell Games rolled around, that’s fine! Let’s use Goten then.
Goten was born after the Cell Games, which is after the Tenkaichi. However, during the Buu Tournament, he is clearly stated to be seven years old. This means the Saiyman and Buu saga cannot be “a little under seven years after the Cell Games (which was at the end of May)”.
Even if Chichi gave birth to him the day after the Cell Games, it’s not possible for him to be already seven years old on May 7th during the Tenkaichi.
(and in this house we do not doubt the Announcer’s ability to give accurate info)
If we want the boys’ ages to make sense, we need to think they’ll be turning 8 and 9 respectively.
And the Tenkaichi Budokai is traditionally held every three years so the Buu saga needs to happen “just a little under 9 years” after the Cell Games.
The problem is that if that’s the case, no matter how you add it up, May 7th, “a little under 9 years after the Cell games’, makes Gohan’ calendar age 17 (almost 18 since his birthday is coming up soon), but his biological age is almost 19. This means unless the Saiyaman arc takes place over a year and they train for that long for the tournament, his age doesn’t work.
Though that does mean “adult Gohan” for Buu Gohan actually works…
There is no way to make both these elements work… unless we question Gohan’s initial age.
He is holding three fingers up, not four!!
Tumblr media
Indeed, Toriyama changed his age in the following chapter. His 3 years old situation was corrected in the volumes, but the artwork was NOT corrected. This is how you show 3 and 4 with your fingers in Japan!
Tumblr media
If Gohan starts at 3 years old, then everything falls into place just fine.
And this is why many of us say Gohan was 10 when he killed Cell.
Tumblr media
TLDR:

I'm hyped for this game!
(I was supposed to post this like 2 weeks ago & didn't. Gonna post it now even tho some new information has came out.)
youtube
Tumblr media
I wanted a game where there are what-if scenarios. But my idea was that it completely altered the story. Idk if Sparking Zero will do that tho. Probably to a lesser extreme than what I thought.
WHAT IF SCENARIOS:
I made this and didn't post it. Then more info came out that kinda confirmed some of what I speculated.
But with scenarios like this??? Goku refuses help from Piccolo so Krillin follows Goku to fight Raditz (Battle of Z did that scenario too). Krillin was gonna go help Goku too even tho he knew he sould likely die. And if Goku refused Piccolo's help, of course Krillin would go help his bro save Gohan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Krillin fought Freeza in his 1st, 2nd, & final forms. Final Form Freeza was far stronger than Krillin. Goku was closer to Freeza in strength but still weaker. Yet Krillin hung in there against Freeza & even almost killed 2nd form Freeza with a Kienzan. Goku & Krillin could realistically team-up against Raditz & win (with help from Gohan) if they outsmart him along with outmaneuvering him with their synchronized Turtle School style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I watched Dotodoya's videos & without spoiling too much... I was right, but with extra steps. And the characters were implemented well & the dialogue was interesting.
Then, we have a scenario where Krillin dies fighting against Oozaru Vegeta (he probably saved Goku from getting crushed) which makes Goku turns Super Saiyan during the Saiyan Saga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is this a result of Goku not dying against Raditz because Krillin helped defeat Raditz without Goku dying? If so, this means Goku never trained with King Kai, so Goku doesn't know the Kaio-Ken nor the Genki Dama. Krillin dies helping a weaker Goku sho doesn't have King Kai's techniques, then Goku gets more than enough power to defeat Vegeta by turning Super Saiyan. So, some scenarios may actually change the story more than we think.
How would this effect the Freeza Saga? @dragon-ball-meta has a good answer.
My thoughts are that changes in one saga have to be course corrected in the next saga.
Oozaru Vegeta kills Krillin
Goku turns SSJ & defeats Vegeta
SSJ Goku spares Vegeta & mocks him by saying Vegeta lost to a low-class Saiyan (like how SSJ Goku spared then mocked Freeza for being defeated by a Saiyan)
Krillin, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, & Yamcha go train with King Kai (maybe they learn Kaio-Ken & the Genki Dama instead since Goku has SSJ)
Depending on if Piccolo survived the battle against the Saiyans, perhaps he & Gohan accompany Goku to Namek
Vegeta is on Namek too and tries to become a Super Saiyan by trying to be like Goku (and trying to be more like Goku what Vegeta does after the Cell Saga & is why Vegeta became a kinder person)
The Namekian Dragon Balls are used to wish Krillin back to life, Chaotzu back to life, then Namekian Dragon Balls become inert before they can make a 3rd wish (or Piccolo is wished back if he is dead)
Over the battles, Goku gets stronger and learns how to turn SSJ when facing Freeza instead of using Kaio-Ken & Goku believes he killed Freeza
Once back on Earth, the Dragon Balls are used to resurrect Yamcha & Tien along with those killed on the day the Saiyans attacked
Now at the start of the Cell Saga, everything is pretty much reset to how it was supposed to be, but Goku might fight Mecha Freeza & King Cold on Earth as Future Trunks watches then delivers a grave warning
This outcome may even result in Vegeta being a kinder person earlier than in canon & him teaching Trunks his new technique, then we get a Father-Son Final Flash
Tumblr media
(The arena is still there, so maybe Vegeta takes Goku's offer to fight Cell first, then Trunks hops in to help Vegeta survive against Cell)
Tumblr media
Goku sacrifices himself when Cell is about to self-destruct, thus the Saga ends how it did canonically & then we go into the Buu Saga. Then Goku can learn the Kaio-Ken & Genki Dama from King Kai during the 7 years between the Cell Saga & the Buu Saga
Tumblr media
So, if there were major alterations in the Cell Saga, the Buu Saga would restore things back to "normal" depending on the altered scenarios. Or at least those are my thoughts/hopes. This game could have tons of replay value. The type of DB game that I always wanted!
CHARACTER POV:
Tumblr media
There is also something about the story following from the pov of 8 characters.
More info came out. You can watch scenes normally or switch to watch them from the POV of the character available for the scene. We see this in a trailer when Goku is using Instant Transmission to move Cell from Earth. We also see this 1st person POV when Piccolo uses a Special Beam Cannon on Raditz & Goku.
I think it will be, Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, Future Trunks, Tien, Yamcha. We already saw some events from Goku's POV during the Saiyan Saga & Cell Saga.
However, there are two POVs I want to see... 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm joking lol 😅 (kinda 👀). But, I bet we could see everyone get defeated from Krillin's perspective, then when 18 kisses him.
OTHER THINGS I WONDER ABOUT & HOPE FOR:
The story for Super Hero will be fun. That will mainly be a Piccolo POV. I wonder what changes could be made too. Will there be an option to request the help of 17? What will the fight against Cell Max be like? Can you choose who to play as during the battle between Gohan & Piccolo?
And the unlockable costumes? All the different costumes from DB to DBS plus the Super Hero & Daima DLC will be so cool! I wonder if you can mix some costumes up. Like give Krillin his DBS hair while he is in his Buu Saga outfit.
I'm excited for certain team attacks too. The main one being K18's team attack they did during the Tournament of Power. And interesting enough, 18 didn't form this pink energy attack, Krillin did. So maybe he would have to be on her team for there to be this special team attack.
Tumblr media
I hope we get other cool team attacks. Like Roshi performing a Kamehameha with his students, a 17 & Krillin team attack, Videl & Gohan, Vegeta DBS & Future Trunks DBS, Goku & Krillin spiral Kamehameha (from DBS EP 76). And I hope we get get special animations for finishers like 18 vs Giant Ribrianne.
So why not add other things from the DBS anime continuity? Most of the character designs & techniques of the characters are from the DBS anime continuity.
One stage is from the DBS anime continuity of Universe 10's Kai planet
Full Power Jiren who is shirtless aint in the manga
Kakunsa's attacks aren't in the manga, I don't recall Max Power Roshi being in the manga
SSBK isn't in the manga
Certain orb attacks that Beerus has is anime exclusive
God of Destruction Toppo is anime exclusive (I'm sure that will get a reveal too)
Bergamo & his team attack with his brothers is anime exclusive
SSJ2 Kefla's attack is anime exclusive
Spirit Sword Future Trunks is anime exclusive
The halo behind Fused Zamasu & the ki bird thing he creates is anime exclusive
Corrupted Fused Zamasu is anime exclusive
Alot of the supers and ultimate come from the DBS anime (like DBS 17's attacks).
The Gamma Burst Flash for SSB Vegeta is from the DBS manga continuity.
The very end of Krillin's Ultimate Attack is the Super Destructo Disk & to me it resembles the big Kienzan he uses against Cell Max. (This move will look so cool on Cell Max!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd like to see an option to give Krillin his attacks from DBS as interchangeable supers; Solar Flare ×100 which would blind the opponent & make it so that they cannot lock on to Krillin for a few seconds even is they turn the camera to see him. An attack where he throws his stinky shoe at his opponent then blasts them with a Kamehameha. And I would really love it if they give Krillin his Non-Self State power as a power-up similar to Kaio-Ken for base Goku (early & mid), Kaio-Ken for Super Saiyan Blue Goku, & Golden Freeza powering up to True Golden Freeza. They could call it "Dormant Potential" or something & it gives Krillin a buff, a different aura, & slightly changes his combat.
This link, but for Sparking Zero instead.
So, there is a chance Krillin could get his power-up from DBS EP 76 as a sort of Kaio-Ken type of techniques. I just hope it happens since I'm a huge Krillin fan 🤞
DBS MANGA CHARACTERS:
It's probably unlikely for DBS manga exclusive characters to make the roster. Unless its a DLC then maybe we could get Moro, Merus, Gas, Granolah. Which would be the first time they make an appearance in a game. We already have Vegeta's Gamma Burst Flash from the manga's Tournament of Power Saga & Future Trunks using Solar Flare like he did in the nanga. So these characters could be on the way if they aren't on the main roster.
I doubt there will be a "True Ultra Instinct" because that is just convoluted & pointless. Probably no susanoo Ultra Instinct Goku either. If it is in the game, maybe its a DLC super move to give Goku a Giant form. Then ppl could do Susanoo Goku vs Oozaru Vegeta.
I feel like Ultra Ego could be possible IF they do a manga DLC or make a poll for characters that players want to have in the game. I personally dislike the design of UE, but that's just me. I dislike the lack of eyebrows that SSJ3 has. I like the design of Ultra Supervillain Vegeta from Xenoverse 2 better than Ultra Ego. Anyway, what would Ultra Ego Vegeta's moveset be? His Ultimate would be a giant Hakai ball, a technique that is similar to super armor where getting his amplifies his strength... Stuff like that I guess. Some melee attacks from the manga as a super too.
GT & DBZ MOVIE CHARACTERS:
Idk if there will be GT & Z Movie characters this time in the base roster. But I feel like GT has to be included at some point. I just believe DBZ through DBS will be the main focus for characters & story. The Main Continuity is DB, DBZ, & DBS (and probably Daima too) while GT is a separate continuity that includes Z Movie characters. But I feel like they have to include SSJ4 Gogeta & Z Broly at some point. They are too iconic to the series and to the Budokai games.
Sorry I put so much of my thoughts all here. If I make other posts, they will remain as drafts for way too long & become pointless.

Man, thinking about Dragonball's capsule tech, makes me wish Toriyama hadn't gone all powerscale-y on everything like he did. Like, even more than I already did.
I can imagine a version of the series where Bulma stays relevant, carrying around entire labs and workshops in her pocket, building weapons and augmentations for the group. Portable gravity rooms and exo-suits. Scouters for characters who can't sense ki. A version of the story where, like One Piece, Toriyama planned out the ending from the very start, and built consistently towards that with Buu, foreshadowing the whole time.
Like, I love Dragonball don't get me wrong, but it introduces some cool ideas and characters and then lets them stagnate. The original fighters from OG Dragonball should've been keeping up with the Saiyans to varying degrees. Bulma is Goku's first friend and now she's relegated to background support for the Saiyans, specifically Goku and Vegeta, most of the time. Gohan's missed potential as end of series protagonist stepping into Goku's shoes is well worn territory for a reason. Not that it's not good for Gohan as an individual that he got to retire from fighting and become a scholar, just that it's bad for the structure of the story as a whole that it gets set up that way, and then despite all the talk of passing the torch to future generations with Gohan, Goten, and Trunks, Goku and Vegeta swoop in at the last minute to steal the show, relatively speaking anyway, it's a long series, "last minute" is literal 10s of episodes.
Bulma and the earthlings, besides Mr. Satan, basically have no effect on the plot whatsoever after a certain point, but they should be getting transformations and new techniques too, always striving to keep up with Goku...until he's gone and then it becomes a way for them to carry on part of his legacy. Tien vs. Semi-Perfect Cell at least should serve as a wake up call and push the gang to catch up with all the Saiyans.
It even seems like he was setting something like that up in the Namek Saga by sending them all to King Kai's, where they too should be learning his techniques and catching up to Goku. Watching things unfold on Namek, maybe they adopt King Kai's techniques, and develop their own complimentary moves. Tien could improve the split-form technique and make it not divide his strength by modifying the Kaio-ken, as a literal off the top of my head idea.
Having them more or less be on Goku's level and STILL getting their shit kicked in by the androids, and having them play a greater role in the ensuing conflict would've made things that much more tense and dramatic. You could still have Tien's badass moment against Cell, a way to really hammer home how much danger they're all in if it's taking someone on par with Goku this much effort just to hold him in place and he's only in his SECOND form. It makes the Vegeta and Trunks leaving the hyperbolic time chamber all that much more a big deal because we're seeing just how much stronger than Super Saiyan the ascended form really is, by having the comparison to the fighters more or less on Goku's level.
Just...I dunno. I've looked for fanfics and fan comics that work to make Dragonball a little more cohesive and consistent, but I haven't really found anything.
Anyway, I digressed a lot here, my initial intent was to just talk about how fucking cool Capsule tech is, both conceptually, and in the ways that it could serve the worldbuilding and aesthetics if we were informed by the narrative of Bulma's loadout and limitations, make it more relevant to planning and fight strategy. Watching a reaction to Super, she pulls out a warehouse with a lab in it in Trunks' future and it got me thinking of how cool it'd be if she'd been able to do that sort of on the fly preparation on Namek y'know? Have someone who relies on tech rather than Ki to fight and get around factor into dealing with Frieza and his forces, outfitting Gohan and Krillin, and eventually Vegeta with armor and tools to help them overcome the power difference between them and Frieza's army, as an idea.

today in "I Am Good At Finances": a Phone
so i had a random target gift card i had no better use for, and decided "fuck it" in the electronics section. i tried to find the absolute best phone i could for 50 bucks (briefly considering a KaiOS flip phone), eventually settling on an AT&T prepaid Motorola moto g play (2023). it's...actually pretty decent!
Tumblr media
so this thing claims it has a 90hz refresh, but it's *extremely* variable lol, i've found that on the home screen it can keep 90hz but it definitely doesn't always keep to that high refresh. i honestly just turned off the 90hz variable mode and just run it at 60 (phones dont need any more than that anyways, imho) the display is otherwise pretty excellent, it's an OLED with pretty nice colors and it feels nice.
the cameras are definitely quite average, despite having 3 of them lol
Tumblr media
overall power is...lacking but sufficient, the thing has a MediaTek Helio P35 which can keep up with youtube fine enough but does everything just a *touch* too slow to be a smooth experience. it's handled everything i've thrown at it (osrs and n64 emulation, lol) perfectly, though. so clearly the power isn't going to waste, it just struggles to open discord lmao overall, i could easily live with this thing, and honestly for the price you're paying you could do So Much Worse. it remains to be seen how well it'll hold up in the future but for the occasions i need android for something it does quite well.

Kagome
“so kagome is kikyo reincarnated into the future, and kagome then travels back in time. kikyo also gets revived/comes back from the dead, and the two often interact (tho i will admit the kikyo that comes back is more of a corruption of the original kikyo). since they are reincarnations, they literally have the same soul, and kikyo’s power was passed down to kagome. they also are said to look almost identical due to this.” - User submission
K.O.
“hes got his loser emo boy headmate tko, the 3 different fusions between them (cko, pko, mko) which i dont think actually count for this tournament but its worth mentioning and hes even got an au robot duplicate (k-0) from the episode ok au and a silly roboticized form from the sonic crossover episode lets meet sonic (metal k-0)” - User submission

Kaio Kincaid’s DreamKeeper: This is K.O. From the CN Cult Favorite: OK K.O. Let’s Be Heroes, a Fantastic Cartoon Network Original whose full TV series lasted only two short years and three seasons from around 2017 to 2019, it’s been about five years now since the show met it’s… surprisingly self aware meta rushed series finale while having shown off Easter Eggs of how many more adventures and crossovers K.O. could’ve had, on account of how much of his whole future, K.O. had so much ahead of him back then, and even K.O.’s Creator: Ian Jones Quartey revealed in 2021 how he and his OK K.O. Crew had originally wanted to make the OK K.O. Full TV Series into a Full Streaming TV series on a Streaming AT&T and WarnerMedia platform that would later become the then HBOmax in 2020 which has nowadays changed it’s name to Max since May 2023 last year, which is a rather surprising retrospective truth that I had no idea that I’d come across since I was only looking around the OK K.O. Fandom Website a month ago to see if there was any hopeful news of whether or not the OK K.O. Media Franchise could be revived in the future someday in the form of a sequel series, a spinoff, an IDW Licensed Comic Sequel Series that could serve as some non canon season 4 in Licensed Comic Form, or maybe even a Direct to Streaming Movie or Streaming TV Special etc, and I honestly didn’t know that IJQ wanted to make the OK K.O. Full TV Show into a Streaming Original, which in hindsight: had HBOmax/Max had launched earlier in 2017 around OK K.O.’s time back then, then the show’s lifespan wouldn’t have ever needed to be held back by Cable TV Ratings which led to their early cancellation in the first place, but enough about that, I wanted to draw K.O. and his Were Puppy form in the DreamKeepers art style while giving his Canine Self his own DK-Halo, because I thought it would be fun to just draw them in that style while staying faithful to their simplistic designs. So I hope you folks like this DreamKeepers style interpretation of the two K.O.'s of course.

Knock knock, KaiOS.
The ephemeral taste of innovating nearly obsolete bricks might be reaching its inevitable demise.
Tumblr media

Despite the recent boom of feature phone sales over digital minimalism and dopamine detox trends, the future for KaiOS remains bleak as they fail to be consistent with their promises, thus miserably lagging against established giants in the market.
The good start
KaiOS is a partially open-source operating system developed by the Hong Kong-based company, KaiOS Technologies Inc. It was initially released in October 2017 and was forked from Boot 2 Gecko. Their name is from the Chinese for open – 开 (kāi) which “captures the idea of being inclusive.”
In just one year, they have overtaken Apple’s iOS as the second most popular operating system in India, with Android remaining on top, despite losing their 9% market share. In that same timeframe as well, they managed to sell around 450 million devices worldwide. Furthermore, their platform is compatible to WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Assistant.
To oversimplify things, KaiOS took the Boot 2 Gecko code (based from FirefoxOS) and modified it to run on hardware similar to that of feature phones and added the KaiOS Store. Other than that, they also implemented recent innovations that are becoming today’s standard, like 4G LTE and 5G, GPS, and Wi-Fi. By doing so, they effectively just created a separate phone segment, which some people call as the quasi-smartphones or smart feature phones.
KaiOS specifically chose the hardware present in their devices for an appealing approach to developing markets, like India and Pakistan, to bridge the digital divide and bring cheaper internet access. They removed the touch screen which they consider as the most costly part of the device, and replaced it with a cheaper T9 keypad input. Additionally, their devices only need 256MB to work and are also compatible with cost-efficient Spreadtrum chipsets.
What went wrong
By doing so, they effectively avoided the mistakes that Mozilla made. They chose a target audience first and offered them a product. They made an operating system out of the web but used that as a tool rather than the end goal, the latter being their approach to the digital divide. But not all products are perfect on their own, as their approach is a double-edged sword.
The T9 keypad meant that the apps had to be optimized to work on such inputs. Likewise, dissimilar to FirefoxOS, not all webpages can run on KaiOS devices due to hardware restraints. Such disadvantages make it an appealing short-term solution while their users save up for better entry-level Android devices.
Platform immaturity
The platform is still quite immature, despite five years since its initial launch. Some users claimed that their devices sometimes cannot receive calls, and crashes on related functions constantly. The battery also does not live up to its expectations and provides a ‘disappointing’ performance. Additionally, the calendar’s sync and date functionality is unstable, the alarm clock doesn’t ring from time to time, and the lack of note-taking, file browsing, multitasking, and wide audio format support. Besides, the platform lacked proper app quality control, bug reports, and feedback system, along with a slew of advertisements. Perhaps, the most lambasted functionality of the platform is the T9 input. Users characterized the input as slow and unreliable, thus ineffective for efficient user interface navigation. The predictive text input, which might sound good, is something they’d rather have disabled due to its restraints such as inaccurate suggestions and buggy input.
Some have mentioned that users may be over-estimating KaiOS and pitching it against smartphone platforms. Then on, we can’t deny that a platform still has to be stable and reliable, albeit hardware-restricted. Some went on to compare the system to its older counterparts such as Nokia’s Series 40, Microsoft’s Lumia, Vodafone’s MobiWire, and Blackberry’s Blackberry 10, which the users characterized as more ‘stable.’
Unfortunately, version 2.5.4 onwards faced a downward trend as certain apps were no longer maintained and supported, due to the decrease of development activity. For instance, the optimized Google and YouTube apps have been pulled out from the app store, around the same time as the update. In version 3, WhatsApp support has already been dropped and new app submissions to the store also plummeted. Google Assistant, the primary tool for users to voice type and issue commands (albeit stripped-down in comparison to Android), also dropped KaiOS support last June 30, 2021. Some users reached out to the company regarding this matter, to which they replied that they are developing an in-house voice assistant alternative. Until now, it is nowhere near worldwide coverage, given the limited devices it was shipped upon.
The company and its partners
Even more worse, the problem rests beyond that. The project development of has been consistent enough until the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the company’s blog statement “the growth was still not like how we achieved in the pre-COVID times, but these numbers and new partnerships are going up and in the right direction in this second year of the pandemic.”
In 2022, the project updates has since then plummeted. There weren’t any major announcements across all their social media platforms, even from the company website. Their Github repositories are no exception as well, as they still haven’t received any commits until now. Their only active repo is the gecko-b2g, which serves as the operating system base.
It is not implicit that their users are complaining about the bugs and speculating on the project’s downfall but it seems that they have no proper public relations and customer support as the company fails to actively respond to these messages.
Nokia
Nokia, or should we say, HMD Global has been a primary partner of KaiOS Technologies over the years. They manufactured the higher-end devices of the platform that were considerably the most popular in KaiOS’ lineup, such as the Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 2780 Flip, and the Nokia 8110 4G.
Regardless, their approach is somehow vague as enthusiasts are confused over what their target audience is supposed to be, and what were they trying in the first place. Their approach started with the reboot of their classic devices, so it’s safe to assume that their target consumers are the ones who are nostalgic over their retro bricks. HMD, for a matter of fact, might have just been the worst example of a KaiOS partner.
Their devices are the most expensive ones of the platform, almost close to the entry-level Android Go smartphones. HMD Global has also been long criticized over the failure to deliver software updates from KaiOS to their devices, as they provide only about a year of support for these. The users also cannot help to complain over the significant bloatware present in such a limited hardware they provide.
Just recently, HMD Global took a step back from this approach and cherished their barebones Series 30 and Series 30+ platforms once again. Their last KaiOS device is the 2780 Flip from November 2022 and was then on followed by a series of Android Go and dumbphones from their C and 1xx series. In a reply to a user inquiry, they reportedly blamed KaiOS as the Google Assistant support for the platform was dropped.
Alcatel and TCL
Alcatel and TCL are also major partners of KaiOS. In fact, TCL Corporation is the largest shareholder of KaiOS Technologies. Both of them are popular for their Go Flip line. Despite the successes of Go Flip 1, 2, 3, and V, they didn’t get to experience the luxury of getting updated to the latest version of the OS, unlike the Go Flip 4. A user reached out to the company, to which they replied that they are still planning to serve these said updates to such devices, although there is still no update to talk of until now.
Unfortunately, similar to HMD Global, they seem to be diverging away from the platform as recent releases from both manufacturers are focused on midrange to high-end Android devices, as well as the Tab series of TCL.
Jio
The Indian telecommunications company, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is the catalyst of KaiOS’ takeover against Apple in the country, all thanks to their aggressive marketing approach. They offered the competitively priced JioPhone for free to their users who are subscribed to their data plans.
Unluckily, even Jio is also straying away from KaiOS. There have been rumors that the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2 have been discontinued, as they are no longer sold. They last received the version 0258 update back on May 22, 2021, and clearly missed version 3.0 by a long shot. On June 24, 2021, Reliance Jio announced the JioPhone Next, a budget Android Go smartphone made in collaboration with Google. Recently this year, they partnered with Karbonn to release the Jio Bharat K1 Karbonn and V2 to provide access to UPI payments, Jio ecosystem, and cheaper 4G to the rural areas of India that remain untapped by recent advancements in technology.
What happened?
Fast forward to August 2023, users speculate that the project has already died out due to lack of activity and stagnation since the release of 3.0. Their company's social media platforms are inactive, except for the usual, seemingly AI-generated content every national holiday across countries. On the other hand, KaiOS Technologies partnered with the cybersecurity firm Trustonic to expand their device affordability efforts in Africa. There have also been infrequent new device releases for the platform, such as the AT&T Cingular Flex in February, Cricket Debut Flex in June, and Logan Technology’s Panita this August. Truth be told, I find this section rather short and lacking. Unfortunately, I could say the same for the company’s recent efforts. Nonetheless, I hope that things eventually get better. As users worldwide expected a reliable feature phone platform, all these issues contributed to a downward trend of interest for KaiOS. It seems that they might end up like FirefoxOS, failing to keep up and desolate in the past. Whether they wake up to innovate again, or continue dormant and inevitably die out is up for them to decide.
For now, one thing’s for sure, if they fail to address these issues, they’ll be no better than the obsolete bricks of the bygone era.

Dragon Ball Super 043
Tumblr media
Hey, shut up!  There’s a baby!
Tumblr media
So Goku isn’t feeling well lately.   He’s got no appetite, and when he flies, he has difficulty steering, which sounds scary as hell.  Chi-Chi suggests he go consult King Kai, but Goku’s Instant Transmission power doesn’t work very well either.  I mean, that could lead to some pretty horrifying scenarios, now that I think of it.  Like, Cronenburg movie horrifying, let’s leave it at that.  Fortunately, he just keeps teleporting to the wrong places until he finally ends up where he wants to go.
Tumblr media
King Kai diagnoses Goku with “Delayed Onset Energy Disorder”, which is just a Dragon Ball Z version of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.  That’s a real-world condition where you get sore after overdoing it at the gym.  People used to think this was caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the muscles, but this was later proven to be false.  Anyway, that Bluper Kaio-ken Goku used against Hit in Episode 39 and 40 was probably what caused it, and now Goku cant’ control his ki.  I’m assuming the “Delayed Onset” part was just to explain why this didn’t bother him during Episodes 41 and 42.  King Kai recommends Goku rest until he’s back to normal, except he still has to teleport back home, so that’s kind of a problem, right?
Tumblr media
So yeah, he makes it home, but he also crashes through the whole house, so the Son family has to crash at Gohan and Videl’s house.
Tumblr media
But Gohan’s not at home at the moment, because he and Videl are having dinner with some academic big shots about some future career thing.  I can’t fault Toriyama/Toei/Shueisha for not being too interested in the details of Gohan’s scientific career.  I mean, that’s not what the show is about, and I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble of explaining how this works in Dragon World.  Maybe this is exactly how it works in the real world, and I just never found out because I settled for a Bachelor’s Degree.
My point is that it’s kind of cheap to just have Gohan in these vague conferences, or having meals with vague characters who talk about how “impressive” his work has been without ever explaining what he’s doing.  I’m pretty sure Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was the first time they confirmed that Gohan is a professional biologist, and that movie came out in 2022.  I mean, I think that was what everyone had guessed, but in 2016, I couldn’t tell you for certain whether he had finished college or grad school, or if he was already working in the private sector.
Anyway, he had to skip the Destroyer Invitational Tournament because of an important meeting he had to go to that same day, and this episode suggest that his attendance is paying off.  He’s supposed to get this big job offer soon, and Videl supplying an autographed picture of Mr. Satan doesn’t hurt either.
Oh, and Gohan’s let hand looks like ass in this scene.  We’re through the worst of Dragon Ball Super’s slipshod visuals, but it never ceases to amaze me how often I find off-model stuff without even trying.  We’re 43 episodes into this thing and they’re still finding their level.
The point of this scene is that Goku is calling to let Gohan know they’re at his house and why.  And since Gohan repeats everything Goku says for exposition, he gets overheard by the Pilaf Gang, who are just... here at this restaurant for no apparent reason.
Tumblr media
I miss my dad a lot.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Piccolo’s been at the house looking after Pan, and he doesn’t trust Chi-Chi and Goku to handle things without him, so he sticks around.  Later, Piccolo takes the baby and her sick grandpa up to the roof to hang out, because Piccolo.
Tumblr media
Pan is fascinated by the stars, and Goku offers to fly her up for a closer look when he’s feeling better, but for now he promises her that she’ll become a Super Saiyan someday and see them for herself.  Then she calls him “da-da” which bothers him because he’s “grampa”, but Pan can’t say that yet, I guess.
Tumblr media
Outside, Pilaf has this whole scheme lined up, but I honestly don’t understand any of it.  Basically they want to get the others away from the house so they can beat up Goku with their new robot suit.  Since Goku’s powerless, they figure this is their best chance to finish him.  I’ll be honest, I’ve completely lost the plot with the Pilaf Gang.   Trust me, I’ve been paying attention here.  Part of the reason I wanted to re-watch this show was to try to get a handle on what they were doing, but it’s no good.  None of this makes any sense.
Okay, so their last appearance before Dragon Ball Super was in the filler arc at the end of Dragon Ball.  It’s been roughly twenty-five years since then.  Now they show up in the Battle of Gods arc as children.  The movie explained that they once used the Dragon Balls to make themselves younger, but DBS never bothers with any of that.  So if you’re going in cold, and Dragon Ball Super is the only one you’ve warched, then all you know for sure is that these nutty kids really want Dragon Balls and they seem to want to murder Goku for no apparent reason.
Tumblr media
Anyway, their plan goes haywire for some reason.  I think it’s because they saw people leaving the house to search for Pan.  As it turns out, Pan came to them, and in their haste to bug out, Mai brought Pan aboard.  Pilaf wants her to toss the baby out, because he won’t do it himself.  In his ranting and raving, he damages the controls, which causes their robot to shoot straight up into space.
Tumblr media
Then Pan busts out with all the Pilaf Gang hanging on to her foot for dear life.
Tumblr media
She can finally see the stars, up close, although I suppose the view isn’t much different.  Then she remembers all her stuff is back home, so she flies back.
Tumblr media
The Pilaf Gang gets deposited in a tree, or something.
Tumblr media
Goku and the others return from their search to find Pan sleeping on the couch like nothing happened at all.  What a li’l stinker.
Tumblr media
Then Gohan and Videl come home and explain that they offered Gohan the job, but he turned it down because the hours were too much.  Also, his daugther is a super-strong flying baby, so that complicates things.  Pan starts saying “grampa” to Goku, so she learned a new word.  And that’s basically it.
Honestly, as a story, this really didn’t go anywhere.  Goku gets over his DOED by the next episode, and while this was a cute outing for Pan, I’m not sure what the point of it was.  They might have done more with the Gohan plot, since he’s the only character who made any sort of decision, but I’m not sure how that could work.  I’m not eager for a five minute scene where Gohan and Videl discuss the pro’s and con’s of taking some new job.
Well, at least the baby’s cute.

Color Challenge - Brown’s CN 30th Anniversary
🇵🇷Me: Hey there, everyone! As you can see, I originally saved this anniversary artwork from last month before I can show during CN’s 30th birthday. Despite being late, I took some time when creating this before I went do something else. At least I’m trying to be honest here; it was a busy October month for me. Now that it was over still, here’s what I would’ve considered my first CN’s 30th Anniversary artwork….cause normally I’ll be do a second time afterwards so make sure to forward to it. For now though, take a good look of my squirrel character and his cartoon friends celebrate CN. This time though is having my color palette of my choice like the same way that my P-pal while sharing last month art trade post. Link Here
🥜Brown: Yeah, but at least this one good too as well; rising up my bigger flag in honor. It was nice to have himself to share this year. Although I would’ve being there sooner as I thought it was. That’s okay still as I greatly appreciate this as to celebrate history of Cartoon Network itself. Hope to everyone can enjoy this, but well see if it hold up in the near future.

What would dbz look like in the bugsnax universe. Or vice versa
if the saiyans pre-genocide discovered bugsnax theyd succumb to them long before freeza ever got around to dealing with them
beerus would also succumb to bugsnax and i dont know enough about gods of destruction to tell you what would happen after that
namekians, who only need water, would straight up outlast every other race if bugsnax started travelling to other planets
that being said i think gohan would refuse to eat them at all, even before he figures out what they really are (because hes a nerd)
other non-namekians that probably wouldnt eat bugsnax imo: krillin, android 17, android 16, future trunks, bulma, tenshinhan, chaotzu, cell
vegeta wouldnt eat bugsnax at first until goku goes ham and eats as many as possible because no one would/could stop him. vegeta would want in after that
if a saiyan with a tail ate a bugsnak that turned their tail into food then their tail would no longer be a weakness in a fight
the second theres a myth about bugsnax making you stronger literally everyone would be trying to devour as many as possible. freeza would eat the most
if calories of bugsnax = power levels (and if power levels werent bullshit) then the most powerful bugsnax would be cheddaboardle rex (2,132,000), daddy cakelegs (1,344,000), mothzasupreme (1,008,000), megamaki (952,000) and pielobite (402,400). Considering these are all bosses, I'm inclined to believe calories are kind of an indicator for power
this means that each of these boss bugs could possibly beat goku in a fight up until the freeza saga. when goku is fighting captain ginyu he uses the kaio-ken x2 and reaches a power level of 180,000. however, after he recovers from this fight, his power level increases immensely to 3,000,000, vastly outdoing even the cheddaboardle rex in terms of raw power
this wont make sense unless you know how bugsnax ends but any planet with bugsnax on em would start out being worth a lot until the truth about them is uncovered, driving the value of any planet with them into the ground. freeza could make bank on bugsnax-infested planets for a short period of time until finding a planet with them is like a human landlord buying a building already infested with rats and roaches and bedbugs all at once
a new super saiyan transformation drops called super saiyan snak. gokus hair is rainbow now
i literally cannot comprehend bugsnax in toriyama's style or dbz in the bugsnax style but i would still like to see it

Time to catch up on things.
Well Warhammer does have lots of grimdark lore to it. Though I recommend “If The Emperor Had A Text To Speech Device”, it is hilarious like Hellsing Ultimate Abridged funny. ~ @zodiac0427
I’ve seen it. Still I don’t think I can understand Warhammer through that.
I'm sorry are we just gonna gloss over the fact that Grogar said HE DESTROYED THE UNIVERSE FOUR TIMES IN THE PAST?! ~ @puzzlingfrost
Technically he did it once. He survived four universe destructions.
looks like the mod has ended up inside the void as well. ~ Anonymous
I’m okay. Just needed to finish things.

Black Ray Lancer's equipment with Utopia through Armored Xyz has no name, though it was obviously meant to be its own card during the show's airing, since it is effectively Shark & Yuma's analogue for Black Skull Dragon, though power-level wise, it is closer to Dark Flare Knight without Mirage Knight. It will likely appear in a future set.
I'm pretty sure in a hypothetical ZEXAL reboot, Rikuo, and Kaio would be later used as Mr. Heartland's Barian pawns, or something, and this arc would be like the half of the first Season instead of Kaito stuff.
Armored Xyz mechanic was supposed to be one of the early major mechanics of Xyz Summon, but it didn't become a proper mechanic in OCG until this year, a good, decent, 12 years after these episodes' original airing. Despite having this card now, Yuma never uses it again, though it appears in later contexts as symbolic of Yuma's bond with Shark. This mechanic is always used for regular Shark instead lster on (though Kaito uses it in the manga).
I guess you can say Armored Xyz got a better treatment than Cross Xyz from ARC-V got now.
