The Archivist and the Revolution by Autumn Chen
============= Links
Play the game See other reviews of the game See other games by Autumn
============= Synopsis
A woman alone in a dying city, on a dying world. What will be left when it all falls apart? The Archivist and the Revolution is a slice-of-life/romance/history simulator set in a far-future sealed city that has undergone cycles of destruction and revival. You play as Em, a middle-aged woman who is no longer an archivist, as she struggles with rent payments, chronic illness, and the remnants of past relationships.
============= Other Info
The Archivist and the Revolution is a Dendry* game, submitted to the 2022 Edition of the IFComp. It ranked 4th overall. *Autumn is also an unofficial maintainer of the Dendry format.
Status: Completed Genre: Science Fiction, Slice-of-Life, Romance
CW: optional sexual content, illness, death, transphobia, homophobia.
============= Playthrough
First Played: 6-Oct-2022 Last Played: 05-Aug-2023 Playtime: around 2h (multiple endings) Rating: 5 /5 Thoughts: Some glimmer of hope in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future...
============= Review
This is a Post-Comp Version review. Also maybe biased because I really like Autumn's work.
In a far future, after centuries of conflict, the Earth's population has been reduced to small communities stuck inside arcologies (city domes). In one of them, lives Em, an Archivist (sorta), trying to survive the best she can (sorta), and maybe (re)form relationships to better her situation. Throughout the game, you must ensure Em is on top of her duties and health.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
As with her other Dendy games, A&R works in layers. On the surface, it is a resource management game, where your savings, energy level (hidden), mental and physical health (hidden) must be minded when organising one's day or spending. While you have agency in this, how far you can go with the different actions will depend on whether you've unlocked certain storylets, or Em's current health at the time. Since she has chronic issues, you won't be allowed to churn through hundreds of files for your job, or even do anything at times.
Underneath, two other mechanics come to play: the relationship/storylet aspect with Em's old acquaintances, and the archiving loop, Em's job. Both will affect Em's survival (savings/health) and the ending of the game. The first is relatively similar to Autumn's previous Dendry games, in which a side-story will be parsed throughout the game, requiring the player to meet specific characters multiple times to uncover the story at large. In this game, clearing more than one path in a playthrough is quite doable. The latter is a mechanic I had not really seen before in an IF game, but one I enjoyed greatly. Your job entails decrypting and archiving files, each with a specific code (hint hint), requiring to be either placed in a specific slot or discarded (or you can keep it for yourself). Combing through the documents were quite fun.
The first time I played the game, I thought I could survive all on my own, leaving past relationships where they were, focusing only on my job and keeping myself afloat. I remember it being incredibly stressful (I almost cried when Em was on the brink of eviction). Everything felt hopeless, and the almost-clinical-at-times prose, as well as the UI, accentuated that feeling.
This time around, I followed Autumn's advice and shamelessly begged my acquaintances for money. I didn't want to recreate that very anxious feeling I had the last time - and wanted to see what else I had missed. Indeed, it was much less stressful to go through. I didn't really have to worry about money (thanks A-), I didn't have to exhaust myself with work, and I could explore more different facets of Em's life (her past relationships, herself, how she had to navigate the world). The world is still wretched, but there is more hope. You almost believe that surviving through it is... doable.
The storylets manages to offer a bit of levity in this wretched world, in which Em can find a community helping others, rekindle her relationship with a (re)closeted trans person, rekindle her relationship with her ex who you had a child with. In (re)making connections, you can learn more about your past and how you (don't) fit in this world. You can go on a date, cook with someone, spend time with your child... have a "normal" life. I quite enjoyed how grounded and raw these storylets felt. They, at times, seemed like a commentary on our present, with the tribalism of social media, the lack of trust in the news, the grueling life under capitalism, and the treatment of transfolks. Strip away the sci-fi/post-apocalyptic future, and they could could be right at home with our current time. I still hated the news part... its description changing the 'a form of self harm' was on point considering the comments...
Even if you don't interact with anyone, you can still learn about the world and your place in it through the notes (essentially a Codex page) or DNA files you decode. From old recovered chats between yourself and other characters, science articles, old journal entries, and documents regarding the Arcology's founder - Liana -, you can build together a bleak image about the world, the state of the environment and human condition, filled with disenchantment and conflict. Depending on what you do with your day, you may find some Easter Eggs, like the TV Series you can watch or the Games you can play, little winks to Autumn's other games. Some characters of the game, made obvious by their names, share a resemblance to ones from the Pageantverse.
With the implementation of the Autosave, I was able to reach a lot more endings than the first time around, especially less bleak ones, without having to replay the game. Those endings are highly dependent on the actions you took during the game, some being sweet (especially with K-), some being maybe critical (imo A-'s, Alone), and one specifically blew my mind (Ending 1 - didn't find before). Ending 1 is by far the most interesting one in my book. While it might seem a bit like a Deux Ex Machina or coming from out of nowhere (depending on your playthrough it may feel like a whiplash), it is the one that has not left my brain since I've replayed the game - maybe because of how strikingly different it is from the others. I think this ending might work best if connections with other characters were not made. It also made me wonder whether Em's life would have been that different if her arcology was still in contact with the others, or whether contact was severed between all arcologies. Honestly, it brought a lot of questions about the world after reading through (sequel of Ending 1, when?).
I don't know if there is a point or a moral to the game. If I were to give one to it, it would be that communities are important for people to thrive, maybe even necessary, and that the world can be a very difficult place when you keep to yourself, worse when your situation is dire in the first place. Even if it seems bleak, there is a glimmer of hope and goodness there...
============= Old Review
Can we code DNA to make data storage?
I enjoy Autumn’s games and (re-)played all her other publications this year (after being introduced through A Paradox Between Worlds). So I was excited for her entry this year too!
Although it is supposed to be placed in a bleak almost apocalyptic future, there seems to be references to some sort of post-Covid period, the current inflation (especially housing) and the treatment of transpeople. Or at least this was the vibe I got from it. A strong feeling of almost hopelessness oozes from the prose (though you can end with a more hopeful/positive ending if you play it right). I almost cried when I didn’t make the rent and saw the amount just jump…
Like Autumn other games, there is a focus on the relationship between the different characters and on MC’s conditions (mental and physical). It is a bit hard to go through (the trigger warnings are warranted) but it does offer an interesting exploration on how to survive when your situation looks this dire. The news items are heart-breaking… but I hated the comments even more.
The Archiving mechanic is really interesting. Reading each file (some being contemporary pieces) as if they were bits and pieces from an ancient time is disturbing (but in a good way). The filing section is simple when you get the hang of it, but it does its job as it’s supposed to. I don’t know if this has been mentioned in the other reviews but: the code for the DNA strings are related to which category you are supposed to file it in and or the origin of the document, W being wikipedia. If you ever wanted to make the filing more difficult, you could add subsections to each categories
But, when you take into account the small resource management (you being the resource to take care of), the simplicity of the archiving makes things a bit easier to go through. I think I would have liked some sort of “action points” or “energy level” bar to see how much more I could do that day (but that is almost the only issue I have with the game, and it’s not even an issue really).
The inclusion of a walkthrough is very welcomed, as each ending requires widely different paths to take. I also liked the background changing depending on where the character was physically (outside, in the room, working…) and the way the pictures were edited enhances the feeling of things not being quite right.
I also like the small link between this entry and the previous games (which was made obvious to me by following the progress of this game on the author’s personal blog)
Overall, this was a great entry, and I hope our future is not as bleak as this one.

Hiro rants about cartoons again
i think one of my favorite things about LMK is the characters, specifically Mei and MK's relationship
like, in EVERY SINGLE OTHER SHOW OR EVEN FANDOM If theres a "Best friend" at the start of the series, or if theres a character of opposite gender next to the main one on the cover, 99 PERCENT OF THE TIME IT'S A LOVE INTEREST. (unless its gay or poly if its gay please continue(The Owl House i love you luz and amity))
for example (all of these things I love but RAHH):
SVTFOE. Like, the show was great until they made it ALLLL about Star and Marco getting married or WHATEVER
Or Steven Universe, for steven and connie. Like, I love them, but you know what i also love? BESTIES. I kinda wish they just.. stayed friends (Ruby and Sapphire dont count those two are one of the best couple ever. In existence)
Or..... SPIDERVERSE. I LOVE GWEN AND MILES BUT... did they HAVEEEEE to be getting together.. couldn't they be friends??
OR EVEN UTMV!! THIS COMMUNITY IS JAM PACKED WITH SHIPS AND LIKE- i love them and all but do we really NEEEDDDD more couples. (But of course do what you want go and ship whoever you want)
BUT LMK DOES IT RIGHT!! In the 6th episode (I think... im probably wrong) theres this entire bit where 2 silly guys try to give MK a "perfect" world, and they trapped him in this place that wasn't real and blah blah blah, AND THEN THE FAKE MEI CONFESSES HER LOVE FOR MK AND YOU KNOW WHAT HE DOES???
THROWS UP OFF THE SIDE OF THE BOAT AND IS OFF PUT FOR LIKE... THE ENTIRE REST OF THE EPISODE
HELL YEAHHHH THEY'RE NOT TOGETHER MEI AND MK BESTIE SUPREMACY WWOOOOOO (I swear to god if they end up together im going to turn into future mikey)
And also, the ONLY canon relationship is literally DBK AND LIF WHICH IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE A KID!!! THEYRE THE ONLY CANON COUPLE!! (that i remember lmfao)
(Also can I just say the LMK community, even though I don't care for the ships, you guys have GOOD ship names. SPICY NOODLES? SHADOW PEACH??? THESE ARE AMAZING and cough cough... definitely better than any ship name the UTMV community has come up with (guys im sorry but every ship with blueberry sans cant be _____berry)
AND YOU KNOW WHAT OTHER SHOW DOES IT AMAZINGLY? Ok K.O let's be Heroes! Partially because K.O is like... 6-10 years younger than his friends BUT DENDY!!! DENDY AND KO ARENT TOGETHER EVEN THOUGH THEYRE THE SAME AGE AND ARE FRIENDS!!! LOOK AT THIS!! LOOK AT THEM! THEY ARE ONLLYY FRIENDS!!
LIKE I know ships are fun and cute but having the main character NOT have a love interest is just, or even MORE adorable than a couple.
#its so obvious im aroace here#BUT LIKE!! RAHHHHHH#also hello lmk fandom... i have emerged from the shadows....#good luck dealing with me#LMK#lego monkie kid#monkie kid#lego monkey kid#okay time to go draw again now that i dont have LMK to binge (again)

Story Idea: Sailor Moon Season Mashup
I just had an idea I've got to share and hopefully inspire someone to write. An aged-up season mashup where the first season and the latter half of the second come together.
Basically, when the Nijizuishou Arc is happening Usa and the others are in their early to mid twenties. Usa and Mamo are pining for each other but don't want to act on their feelings because they don't want to endanger each other in the event their identities are found out so they make the best of their situation by getting together with their partner-in-youma-fighting/not-quite-ally-or-enemy because at least if they're discovered as being together they know they can protect themselves.
And then, the Reveal.
It's during the time of Mamo's conversion, Usa doesn't know if he's dead or alive and depressed that the man she's been pining for and wanting to be with is also the man she's unknowingly been with because she didn't know she could be with him, that a strange little girl with hair in a familiar style lands in Usa's lap while at the park for some fresh air. And to get away from her well meaning friends' smothering. Said little girl is stunned that she's landed in the lap of someone who looks so much like her Mama that she just starts crying and apologizing. It's all her fault after all. Usa gets her calmed down before taking her home, she's been SM for a while now and whatever instincts she's honed however long are telling her to not let the girl go off alone. That she's important and she needs protection and, depression over her lost love or not, she's gonna give it to her, damn it!
I think you see where I'm going with this. Instead of the 'breakup' that happened in the second half of the 90s R season it's that Mamo is Dendy when Chibi makes her appearance. Diamond wants Serenity, as always, and, what joy of joys, they've come to a past in which the King has married a different Queen (obviously he hasn't but the minds of the obsessed work in mysterious ways in order to fit reality into their narrative). And lo and behold, because Diamond knew the King was only in it for the power she could wield, the Senshi are fighting against the King, not with him because he wants the Ginzuishou for his 'new' Queen; Diamond's ecstatic. Because it means Serenity's his for the taking. No marital vows of fidelity. No spawn that man planted in her beautiful body to trap her into marrying him in the first place. She probably hasn't even been tasted yet, never known the pleasures of a woman fully grown. But he wouldn't mind being the one to teach her. No, no, he'd do so gleefully.
Thing is, despite the many precautions that SM and TK took whenever they were intimate, Time will always try to find a way to keep the future it wants to happen preserved, even if it doesn't happen the way it should. Usa is, unknowingly for now, pregnant when Mamo's kidnapped. The Key is acting as a shield, not that Chibi knows that yet, against the Law that says "Past and Future must not be in the same space for long." It's keeping Chibi's presence from affecting her Past self while being in said Past.
But now, the Senshi are being run ragged because they're being attacked on two fronts because a surprise second enemy faction came out of the woodwork, they're not gonna ally with people trying to hurt/kill a child, while they were still fighting against their first while also trying to make money at their jobs and keep a surprise child fed, clothed and safe from said second enemy faction. Usa's not gonna let her family be targeted, even if she has to claim of secretly being a teen mother who recently, finally, got her baby back; being an adult in this AU Usa can't help but act like the Mama she's claiming to be to Chibi. It's feels scarily easy, she tells the others, there just seems to be a connection she can't ignore, and she doesn't want to. Then there's how certain Shittenou are being weirdly protective of certain Senshi (you figure out how to justify not killing them off) when the Ayakashi Sisters try to nab them time and again, and said certain Senshi gets frantic returning the favor (you choose whether the sisters are saved like in the 90s anime or not and too whether any of the Travelers know about the Shittenou in their time or if they just don't exist as an AU timesplit) when the Ayakashi sisters try to kill them for interfering which they don't understand why! They're the enemy! ...Aren't they? Not to mention the hullabaloo caused by the miracle worker Dr. Chiba going missing so suddenly even though there are multiple people calling in saying they've seen him here and there but it's just Endou. And poor Chibi, unknowing she's Found Out and Realized, can't seem to stand letting Usa out of her sight if she can help it. (She really is Mama! She's alright and not sleeping, maybe dying, in a Crystal Tomb because she was a bad girl playing with something that wasn't hers.) Clings to SM whenever she saves her and only tends to let go when she mentions getting her to her Mama. Crying silently whenever she gets a glimpse of TK when she's near the battlefield and trembling like she's holding herself back from... something whenever she sees Endou on the street. (She wants her Papa to hold and comfort her, he claimed time and again that there's nothing in the world to keep him from loving her Mama and she wants to know why?! Why did he lie?!)
You can choose whether or not the BMC and the DK ally with one another and actually try to help keep Usa and Mamo apart or try to make them properly fight against each other, but ultimately (obviously) fail, or go the route of Ail and An in trying to kill the one in order to have the other, making excuses to keep the other sweet when they fail, and damn the feelings of the one who's obsession is killed because they have what they want. And/or Metallia and Wiseman team up in the background while the two fools who act as their respective puppet leader get destroyed alongside the Senshi they're fighting against while their own plans come to some form of fruition.

i have a few things to say to you actually
big fan of your adhd/autism bracket, hi also im the moderator of @selfindulgentsillinessbracket and also @weird-al-song-tourney and your blog specifically was one of the main reasons i felt inspired to start my own brackets so thakn you for making me feel inspired enough to do this too bc its been really helpful for my own life
also its funny but your point about how autistic girls are barely a thing in media is exactly a major reason why i made my own self insert autism oc character a girl, because it hit me that "oh wait theres like zero autistic girls in media that i know besides like 3 in total" and like 3 maximum? like, 3 characters is fucking nothing lmao, i mean obv i cant submit my oc but yeah, i am glad i am not the only one that noticed this problem lmao
anyways if webby or dendy arent the winners of this bracket i will be slightly sad but also this bracket existing means we all won in reality
hi how are u doing btw? i hope ur doing well !!
1- giggling and kicking my feet this makes me really happy to hear. but also feels kind of crazy because I think your selfindulgentsillinessbracket is WAY cooler than any of mine. I want the swag to put my own ocs in a bracket!! actually maybe in future I will host a bracket that is for peoples neurodivergent ocs 2- the lack of autistic girlies is a media trend i have like, A Lot of thoughts about but I don't want to get too heavy on my silly bracket blog 😳,, 3- I'm literally going to be so upset if Webby loses any of her polls/lh but I also acknowledge that Ducktales 2017 isn't the most popular show out there and that I'm setting myself up for failure there </3 as for Dendy.... i think she should win, she deserves it after what she's faced in every previous bracket (including my own) 4- hiiii, i AM doing well and I hope you are too!!! currently a busy lady trying to keep on top of the submissions form! 5- you are very kind and I appreciate your words <3

Just wondering two things. 1. If there might be new piplup thread content in the future and 2. If there might ever be a small zine or book print available to buy of the pictures. Thanks
yes definitely but i can't say when, inspiration simply must strike me first
ive been meaning to make prints for ages but the files are very small and weird bc i only ever meant them to be sketches. prints are still possible but i need to find the time to get that all sorted first. but you're not the first person to ask so i'm very much hoping to do so!!!
in general im sorry this blog has been relatively quiet recently! i'm still here i just also have a full-time job now
love the dendy icon btw!!

- from episode "Plaza Alone" at 5:19-5:21
Hello! Welcome to my OK K.O. blog! You can just call me T.K.O.
I use he/it/she pronouns
Original purpose of this blog: I created this blog to reblog daily account's images and say where the image is from. I find it really fun to do!
I might do more with this blog in the future but we will see!
Times I've watched OK K.O.: 9 times
I'm currently: On watch 10, episode Villians Night Out
Favorite characters: I love almost every character, but my favorites are K.O. (and in turn, T.K.O.) (self love ^^) and Dendy!
Almost every character?: I don't like Citrus Twisty, Soda Genie is my least favorite episode.
How I do this: First I take a guess on which episode the screenshot is from, only becoming stumped a few times. After that I go to the episode and find the time stamp!
Why I go by K.O. + tag posts K.O. is in as "Im there ^^": Firstly, I do this so this blog isn't linked to my main blog right now. Secondly, I am K.O., and I mean that pretty genuinely! - Currently T.K.O for personal reasons
I'm always open to messages anddd talking to people! especially about OK KO!
I'll probably add more to this post at some point !

Anxiety time! Thinking about the future time! Gotta spit out my thoughts in my own life! Boy I really gotta put my life in order while I still have time. It's not too late.
I gotta start sleeping earlier, I have terrible sleep schedule thanks especially to my phone. JUST GOTTA start sleeping earlier
Gotta try to study something, I have a computer now, I gotta go back to studying something while I still can.
Gotta try and do my game that I'm making. I really wanna do it, but I keep procrastinating. I gotta try focusing on that. Hmm, everytime I try to go on with it I keep distracting myself, I need to stop it, I need to focus on it.
Gotta write all the stories and fun things I wanna. And draw the stuff I wanna draw too.
I still have some time. Imma try starting small, especially with sleeping well and finishing my game. Gonna try studying again too. I'm just feeling bad today because I didn't do NOTHING today, I did none of these things, didn't get out of my place. Wasn't productive at all.
Last post I talked about how I like to write and see distinct characters, in my game and stories I WANNA write distinct characters, I have so much dialogue and fun stuff, but I can't focus and work on them to put them out and have my fun. Imma try tho, it's Friday, I have a free Saturday and Sunday to work on my game and do a bunch of things. I also have more time coming since next weeks we're gonna have a bunch of national holidays. Imma try to work on my stuff more.
About the study. Imma try doing it soon too, dunno when, BUT I WILL. About the sleep, well, Imma try starting it right now, lol. Gonna turn off my PC and go the fuck to sleep while listening to hours of iceberg videos. It's 1AM already, kinda late. But I'm used to sleeping like 4AM so it's super early to me, MY CHANCE! Buh bye.
Here's a thinking Dendy. Careful Dendy, this bird's gonna poop on you.

Game-Changing Plays: Iconic Moments in Dota 2 History
Dota 2, a strategic and fast-paced multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, has been a cornerstone of esports since its inception. The game’s complexity, coupled with its high skill ceiling, has led to countless memorable moments over the years. These game-changing plays often define tournaments, elevate players to legendary status, and captivate audiences worldwide. In this blog, we will delve into some of the most iconic moments in Dota 2 history, exploring the plays that have left an indelible mark on the game and its community.
1. The Million Dollar Dream Coil (2011)
Background
The International 2011 (TI1) was the inaugural Dota 2 championship, and it set the stage for what would become an annual esports spectacle. The grand finals saw Natus Vincere (Na’Vi) facing EHOME in a best-of-five series. Na’Vi was already leading the series 2-1, and in game four, a single play by Danil "Dendi" Ishutin would go down in history.
The Play
Dendi, playing as Puck, executed a perfect Dream Coil in the Roshan pit, catching multiple EHOME heroes. The timing and precision of this play turned the tide of the battle, allowing Na’Vi to secure Roshan and subsequently win the game and the tournament. This moment, often referred to as the "Million Dollar Dream Coil," showcased the importance of individual skill and coordination in Dota 2.
Impact
The play not only secured Na’Vi the first-ever International championship but also highlighted the potential for Dota 2 to become a premier esports title. Dendi’s Dream Coil became a symbol of excellence and clutch performance, inspiring future generations of players.
2. The Play (2012)
Background
The International 2012 (TI2) featured some of the best teams in the world, with Natus Vincere once again making it to the grand finals, this time against Invictus Gaming (iG). The series was tied 1-1, and in game three, a single moment would become etched in Dota 2 lore.
The Play
"The Play" involved an incredible sequence of events where Na’Vi's Dendi on Pudge and Clement "Puppey" Ivanov on Chen executed a series of hooks and test of faith relocations, pulling enemy heroes into their fountain. This move disrupted iG's strategy and allowed Na’Vi to gain significant momentum, ultimately leading to their victory in the game.
Impact
"The Play" is often cited as one of the most creative and entertaining moments in Dota 2 history. It demonstrated the game’s strategic depth and the potential for unorthodox plays to turn the tide of a match. This moment solidified Na’Vi’s reputation as a team capable of extraordinary feats.
3. Fountain Hook (2013)
Background
The International 2013 (TI3) brought another iconic moment involving Na’Vi, this time against TongFu. The match was part of the upper bracket, and TongFu had a substantial lead. However, Na’Vi had a trick up their sleeve.
The Play
The "Fountain Hook" strategy involved Puppey’s Chen using Test of Faith to teleport Dendi’s Pudge back to base while hooked enemies were dragged along. This play allowed Na’Vi to pick off TongFu’s heroes one by one, even from the safety of their own base, eventually turning the game around.
Impact
The Fountain Hook is remembered as one of the most controversial and innovative plays in Dota 2 history. It showcased the importance of creative thinking and teamwork. Despite the strategy being patched out later, it remains a testament to the game’s dynamic nature and the ingenuity of its players.
4. No Tail’s Rapier Snatch (2016)
Background
In the Manila Major 2016, OG faced off against Team Empire in a high-stakes match. With both teams vying for dominance, one play by Johan "N0tail" Sundstein would become legendary.
The Play
N0tail, playing as Terrorblade, managed to snatch a Divine Rapier dropped by Empire’s Juggernaut during a chaotic team fight. The acquisition of the Rapier turned the tide in OG’s favor, allowing them to push aggressively and secure victory.
Impact
The Rapier snatch is a perfect example of seizing opportunities in the heat of battle. It underscored the unpredictable nature of Dota 2 and the potential for dramatic shifts in momentum. This play reinforced N0tail’s status as one of the game’s most clutch players.
5. The $6 Million Echo Slam (2015)
Background
The International 2015 (TI5) saw CDEC Gaming facing Evil Geniuses (EG) in the grand finals. With the series tied, game four was a critical juncture. Saahil "Universe" Arora’s Earthshaker would make the decisive play.
The Play
Universe’s Earthshaker landed a perfect Echo Slam in the Roshan pit, catching multiple CDEC heroes and wiping them out. This play allowed EG to secure Roshan and eventually the game, winning them the championship and the $6 million prize.
Impact
The "6 Million Dollar Echo Slam" is one of the most celebrated moments in Dota 2 history. It exemplified the impact of a well-executed team fight and highlighted Universe’s exceptional timing and positioning. This play is a staple in discussions about the greatest moments in Dota 2.
6. The Comeback (2017)
Background
The Boston Major 2017 featured one of the greatest comebacks in Dota 2 history. OG was up against Ad Finem in the grand finals, and the series had already seen several close games.
The Play

City Hub: Die Bully Die – Interview With Directors Nick and Nathan Lacey
By Mark Morellini / June 5, 2024
What happens when a man who was bullied at high school for being queer bumps into the bully 17 years later – the same bully who ironically has come out as queer himself? This 16-minute horror/comedy LGBT short film is captivating viewing and redefines the word karma in the deliciously evil twist in the finale.
Die Bully Die was written by Matthew Backer and Drew Weston, inspired by Matthew’s real-life experiences while at high school at his all-boys, Catholic High school in Brisbane. Matthew and Drew also play the two pivotal characters who find themselves in this rather complicated situation.
Astutely directed by Nick and Nathan Lacey, this short film will be having its world premiere at the 71st Sydney Film Festival and is in competition in the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films category.
“This film is an exploration of trauma and overcoming our past experiences, difficulties and how those things can come back to haunt us, but it’s also a film about letting go and embracing forgiveness in a kind of twisted way!” explained Nick Lacey. “Whilst this film is specific to homophobia and to people who have experienced prejudice, we also think it’s universal to everyone who has experienced moments of trauma and bullying.”
Underlying the comedic and horror aspects of the film, Nathan said there are powerful universal messages that resonate. “A message of forgiveness, letting go of the past and also coming to terms with who you are, but even though the messages are serious, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously – there are moments of light with dark.”
Die Bully Die for comedy/horror aficionados, LGBT community
Nick explained that this film was made with the intention of embracing not only an LGBT audience, but also for lovers of comedy and horror to share the enjoyment in a darkened cinema.
Funding for films is universally a long-drawn-out procedure but thanks to the Australian Cultural Fund production to completion was possible as Nick explained, “Without them and the support of the donors, films like this wouldn’t happen. We were blown away by the support and we hope that everyone who donated their money and their time, really sees that paid off on screen.”
When asked which feelings were triggered when they discovered their short film would not only be screening at the SFF but would also be in competition for a major award, Nathan was quick to respond.
“It was an honour for us, and we’ve just been over the moon with it,” he says. “Getting your film into these festivals helps get your film an audience and get eyes on the film and that’s exactly why you make the film in the first place – you want people to experience it and meet the people who are watching it.”
And what’s the future for Die Bully Die? “There will be a 12-month festival run at the very least and we’re still waiting to hear from a majority of upcoming film festivals,” concluded Nathan.
Screens on June 15th at the Sydney Film Festival.

excited abt my future driving :> in stick car its like smthn to rly look forward to.. been asking my dad questions abt it just to clear up any confusion abt what to do in situations and stuff with the clutch. and i think if worst case scenario i have to go practice w/ him i should be able to hold my own more then when i went when i was 17/18 since i know how to drive now. back then i was having to juggle both learning stick and how to just drive a car which was pretty futile trying to learn at the same time. am really excited one cause itll bring me joy and also will hopefully make my dad less miserable and awful all the time knowing his son drives stick since he loves cars so much so itll hopefully make things betteer idk. especilaly since i do need to get him to build those shelves for my tv table like he said he would since dendy loves going behind it and stuff and seems to be his go to area to commit piss crimes so like i need to get shelves and fill them so he cant walk thru it all the time.

HIIII hey I'd like you all to meet Zoey, she's got some words she'd like to say to you all, Take it away Zoey!! (sorry if this is cringe inducing-)
HI EVERYONE! I'M ZOEY! I'm ThatToastyGecko's autistic *cough* also their self-insert *cough* ahem, I'm their autistic girl OC. I wasn't allowed to participate in this bracket since I'm an OC, but I wanted to come by to wish my fellow autistic girls good luck!! I was sad seeing Webby lose so soon but I'm happy she's here at all! I'm really rooting for Dendy, Marcy Wu, Kate, Mabel & oh heck, everyone honestly! No matter who wins, this bracket existing is itself the real win! :D Representation is so so soooo soooooo important you guys! I'm so happy to see so much love for all us autistic gals & heck, autism as a whole getting more support has been a nice change in the world for once. Anyways I better get back to my own blog for my webcomic thingy, I got to be there since I'm the main character and all. I'll swing by again if I have the chance, happy to meet you all!!
AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE, AUTISTICS TOGETHER STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HI ZOEY!!!! THANK U FOR COMING TO GIVE THIS TALK
I agree that it's so so awesome there's been an increase in positivity towards autistic people in recent years (at least on tumblr!) and how that positivity has led to representation from independent creators and mainstream media alike! being able to recognise autistic traits in a character and go "they just like me fr!!" it's such a special experience to me and makes me more confident talking about my needs and experiences as an autistic woman. a big shout out to all the previously high-masking folks who have gained the confidence to start unmasking. and an ever BIGGER shout out to the girlies who got diagnosed later in life because universal autism acceptance is still catching up <3 but I know we will get there.
also Zoey plz come visit again when I hold a neurodivergent ocs bracket at some point in the future.
