Malia wakes up to the smell of pain first, then the sound of light sobs, they come from the body next to her. She turns over as carefully as she can, not wanting to startle Theo too much.

They��re staying at a hotel just outside of Beacon Hills after dealing with a rouge group of hunters, Derek and Peter were supposed to help them but something popped up back in Beacon Hills so it’s just them. Theo had tried to get a room with two beds but they had shown up too late for anything but the stale smelling room they’re in now. Malia hadn’t minded that she had to stay in the same bed as Theo, they’ve done it before, months into being the main protectors of Beacon Hills since the rest of the pack went off to college and the pair have become closer.

Another cry pulls Malia back to Theo. He’s curled in on himself, his heartbeat telling Malia that he’s at least awake and not stuck in a horrid nightmare that she’s seen him have a few times now. She takes a moment before moving a hesitant hand onto the middle of Theo’s back, feeling how he goes rigid a moment but quickly relaxes into her touch.

“Theo? You alright?” The answer is clear by the tear tracks stained down his cheeks and ragged breaths he takes in. Malias chest aches as she shifts to be in front of Theo, cradling his cheeks to softly wipe away the stray tears still slipping down Theo’s skin.

“I just— I can’t sleep.” It’s a little mumbled and all Malia can do is nod, forcing Theo to talk wouldn’t help either of them. She wouldn’t want to anyways, they have an unspoken agreement that they won’t push either into talking or discussing hard topics, it’s why it’s so easy to be vulnerable with him.

“Just breathe, I’m right here.” Theo puts up no fight when Malia pulls him into her chest, tucking his head under her chin as his arms wrap around her middle.

“Malia?” She hums lowly

“Do you ever miss when you’d sleep in your den?” The question takes Malia off guard, she tips her head till her eyes meet Theo’s wide ones. There’s a glint of hope behind them, something that’s waiting for a certain answer.

“Sometimes. I like being human, and I like being in a house, but sometimes I miss the feeling of my old den.” Theo presses a soft kiss to Malias cheek when her voice wobbles the smallest amount. Anyone but Theo wouldn’t catch it, even another supernatural creature wouldn’t be able to pick up on the shift, but Theo does. He always does. Malia hadn’t noticed it till a couple months ago but Theo knows her better than anyone else, they’ve bonded deeper than she ever expected them to.

And nobody else would’ve kissed Malia so tenderly, so simply. It doesn’t feel pressured or hungry or awkward, it’s just them. Theo and Malia, in a moment where nobody else matters, nobody’s opinions on them or anyone else’s feelings matter; they’re free to be themselves.

“I miss sleeping in the woods, when I’d run from the doctors I’d shift and stay in the woods to hide from them. It was nice— not just to be away from them— but to see the stars and be in my wolf form.” Malias heard tidbits about Theo’s time under the dread doctors control and how when things got extra bad he’d run away. They always found him, it might’ve taken a few days, but the doctors always got him back. It still makes Malia feel sick when she thinks about it.

“We could go out to the woods now.” She says because it seems like the logical thing to do, the hunters they were dealing with are shipped off to jail for trying to shoot Theo, there’s no other threats in the area, and nobody else in the pack to be concerned about.

“Are you sure?” The need to ask if she’s being serious is unnecessary, Theo knows, and she knows he knows.

“Let’s go.”

After Theo slips the card for the hotels door under the small doormat for them to grab later, and Malia’s able to get them into a clear part of the woods, they shift. Malia can smell the relief pouring off of Theo, and the ease in his eyes makes Malia smile.

It takes a second for Malia to get used to the feeling of her coyote form again. She stretches her limbs out, coming up behind Theo to nudge her snout against the side of his face, getting him to lick at her with a content nuzzle of his face. Theo leads Malia over to a tree, soft leaves and grass poking through where Theo curls up. Malia lays behind him, almost covering half of him, protecting him in a way, she listens as his heartbeat slows with exhaustion.

The stars shine when her eyes lift, the tree tops move slightly with the summer breeze flowing through the air. She can feel her eyes flutter with the feeling of Theo’s breathing under her, she lets them, they’ll both sleep better out here.

Chapter 3

Contemplating where to go, Liam makes a sharp turn around the bend of the backroads of town. He hears some stirring coming from the backseat followed by a soft groan. Liam looks back, nervously. The morning was creeping through and he didn’t know where to take Theo where no one could find them. He could hide his body in the woods, bury him alive. Throw him in the lake.

“Liam..? What…” Theo looks at him through a hazy vision before he gets a blow to the face from a bony elbow. He passes right back out, his head lolling against the window.

Liam sighs, shifting in his seat. All right, problem averted. Now, about that lake. It’s then that he remembers Lydia’s old lakehouse. Malia used to go there during the full moons, but ever since Stiles has been helping her, it’s mostly been abandoned. Guess it didn’t do well on the market after all. Liam didn’t know why he didn’t think of it sooner. It was the perfect place to hide Theo.

Keep thinking about Isaac Lahey as a full-shift werewolf

The show never says explicitly that you have to be a born werewolf to achieve full shift, just that it's "very rare," which is also kind of bull, since every one of the Hales can do it (apart from Cora, that we know of).

True Alphas are also exceptionally rare, but Scott McCall still became one within two years of being bitten and he didn't even have proper werewolf training.

There's something in the water in Beacon Hills that makes these supernatural kids into Exceptions™.

Derek said he'd never seen a kanima before, but Beacon Hills spawned two of them, so either Derek needs to get out more or they're pretty rare mutations and this town is overflowing with magic.

It could also be Peter, who created Scott the True Alpha, Lydia the Banshee, Malia the full shift werecoyote, and Kate the werejaguar (with just his claws, mind you). But Derek made Jackson, so.

Anyway I think Isaac could do it. I think he'd take all that anger, frustration, desperation, and loneliness and use it to merge with the wolf in a way that all the other bitten wolves struggle to do.

I think the worst thing about the movie is that our post canon thiam world will be destroyed. theo moving in with the geyer-dunbars, working with argent and the sheriff to catch monroe. liam and him getting closer, the pack forgiving him - malia and theo bonding over the full shift, scott being scott, melissa and jenna basically adopting him. theo eventually moving into one of derek‘s apartments, lydia using peter‘s credit card to decorate it. corey, mason, liam and theo being the puppy pack the way they were supposed - with hayden dropping in from time to time to mercilessly tease thiam for their unresolved sexual tension. stiles being the person to forgive theo last - but when he does he means it. AND THEN FINALLY THEO AND LIAM GETTING THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR ASSES AND CONFESSING THEIR FEELINGS. (and of course scott having to spell out to theo at some point that he‘s pack now.)

Trying to put into words why I like the ending of The Golden Enclaves. I guess, I'm willing to be optimistic, because El is.

El has been pessimistic for basically ever, between the prophecy, her immense power, the reflexive fear people have of her, her race. Her idea of a good future involved proving herself a Good Weapon with her powers of mass destruction so she could join an enclave, or maybe she'll go full maleficer and prove her great-grandmother right.

And yet she keeps surprising herself. Even with a knife in her gut, she won't touch malia, and when pushed, she realizes she hates how privileged enclavers are, and she doesn't want it, even before she learns the horrible truth. She realizes she wants to live outside the Scholomance, and she wants real friends, not just allies.

I think at the end, El admitting "It was, actually, a bit nice", inside the gym she hated so much after the restoration, kissing the boy she decided in the first line of the first book she wanted to kill, she's letting herself be happy. She's at a point where she can be optimistic, just a little, even if it's not anything like what she expected. Even after all her character development, that's a big shift for her, but she also has the support and safety to let that part of her relax.

Cannonically Theo is the only Chimera to be able to full shift and not failed like the rest of the Chimeras (besides not being compatible to be the beast), but what I wanna know is why. What did the DDs do that let's him full shift into a wolf since in season 4 Derek had to evolve(and die) to get it and Malia can full shift due to her being a Coyote but Theos full shift is a wolf and not a Coyote.

Why was Theo the only one with this ability since Tracey couldn't even go full kanima etc. Like did the DDs use a evolved wolfs parts for Theos conversion to a chimera or is it possible Theo already was a wolf and he did die during the conversion process, but "evolved" in a way when they revived him.

But at the same time this doesn't explain Theos heart condition and asthma etc since he potentially shouldn't of had those if he was a born wolf 🤔 as he lost those when he became a chimera. I NEED TO KNOW

This is a kid that was experimented on since he was 9 (and probably knows his own insides better than he should since I doubt they used anesthesia on him at all(cough Theo feels little to no pain theory cough)) and maybe they did somehow use their technology to force a full shift of Theo and due to the dangers chose not to try again or something.

I'm rambling now but I hope people get the idea 😭

Sterek should have been endgame and Scott needed to be less of a dick.

I wish the writers would stop using Derek as the punching bag. Like I get he was an angry asshole at the start but can you blame him after all that he went through? He should have had a character growth arc and given the chance to be a better alpha instead of making him give it up. I get the symbolism of giving up the power but he should have gotten it back. And we should have seen more of his full shift than what we got. Like the Hales were special because of the full shift and we only see it once? Also he should have gotten his family land back, like it's been in his family for years and he's lost enough he shouldn't have let the county take his land that was fucked up. Even if he never rebuilt, he could have tore the remains down and put up a marker or a tree or something to show they were there and what happened. But to let it become new housing was just fucked up.

I would have like to see Derek and Scott be co-alphas and lead the pack together. They could have had a batman and superman friendship with one of them being broody and the other being hopeful and optimistic.

Stiles should have had magic. I know Dylan O'Brien said he didn't want Stiles to have magic and just be human but come on, he would have been badass at it.

I was never a big fan of Stiles and Lydia because it felt like he was more in love with the image he had of her than of her. Yes he got to know the real Lydia and they fell in love but I still didn't really like it. He was too obsessed with her it felt like he just wore her down or something idk. I know that Dylan said in an interview that Stiles and Lydia would have dated for a while but then realized they were better of as friends, and this was years before the movie came out.

And OMG the movie what the shit was that!?!?!? For all that Scott said he would be the alpha and defend Beacon Hill he left the town for years and still left at the end of the movie. Derek, Peter, Malia, and Jordan are really the only supernaturals left to defend the town. The Hales are the ones protecting their territory. And did they really have to kill Derek in the way they did it. Like fire really? REALLY!?!? And in front of his sixteen year old son. Derek lost his family at sixteen to a fire and now his son Eli loses his dad to a fire at sixteen? Really!?!? Like I hated it, I hated that the whole movie felt like Scott was just reliving his high school glory days. I hate that's Scott got his happy ending at the expense of Derek's life. Derek was good, he was happy with his son, had a home, a good business, was respect in the community, had a good relationship with the remainder of his family and you kill him off? And then hint at the fact that Scott would be the one to 'adopt' Eli, a kid he barely knew, just so that he and Allison could play house and be a happy little family? BULLSHIT!!!!

I read somewhere that Jeff wanted the show to end with Scott and Allison together and Stiles and Lydia together and that their kids would all be best friends. But with Crystal Reed leaving in season 3 that changed things. The movie felt like his way of getting that ending he wanted but Dylan not returning changed things again. But at least Scott got Allison back, so yay? Don't get me wrong I loved Scott and Allison together but Scott was so obsessed with her to the point that he would throw anyone but his mom under the bus for her. And it got annoying very fast even worse was the fact that he didn't really learn anything from it he has just as obsessed with Kira (though maybe not to the same level). The whole bros before hoes thing was non existent for him. I get Scott was supposed to be like a King Arthur kind of figure, you know? Special, good leader, kind, and legendary but Scott was not it. Yea he had his moments where he was really good but he had so many where he wasn't and he never seemed to learn and grow. Like even the BBC Merlin Arthur who started out as a jerk became honorable, just, and a good leader, yea he too had his moments where he regressed but it was still better than Scott.

They should have fixed his relationship with Derek maybe then him taking Eli in would have made more sense. Like Scott hated Derek a lot ,more so than necessary. Yes Derek lied to get Scott to help him take down the alpha (Peter) but Scott acted like Derek was he one who bit him. Scott forgave so many others who had done far worse (deucalion?) But Derek was where he drew the line? Why because he bit three others who chose the bite? I get him being mad about the lies, I get him being mad about Derek's attitude while on the alpha power trip but come on sometimes Scott was just a dick. He was willing to look the other way when Victoria tried to kill him and was ok with keeping quiet about why Derek bit Victoria and let Allison hate derek and attack his pack because he didn't want to cause problems with Allison. No he sucks. We could have had an epic friendship between them but no we got something half-assed and I hate it.

And why the hell did they make Derek basically a True Alpha like two seconds before he died like what the FUCK!?!?!?

I just wished the would have given Scott some character development instead of just making him more powerful.

I really like that you describe Theo's full-shift form as being a massive wolf. I don't know, it just makes so much sense. He was built/made to be deadly and fearsome and brutal and being a massive Liam-sized wolf makes so much narrative and thematic sense rather than him being stealthy and lithe like Malia. I love fics where Theo full-shifts, I think he would be such a good guard dog and cuddle buddy, I can imagine him guarding the McCall house one minute and then resting between Liam's spread legs as they lie on the couch the next

I don’t know what it was about the first time I wrote Theo full-shifting, and realizing in my mind that he’s just massive. I think like you said it just fits with how he was purpose-built: to be a killer, and also the Dread Doctors aren’t exactly known for their subtlety. Which also makes it so lovely when it is just Theo padding around the various pack houses seeking out (and receiving) physical affection, or just laying on top of Liam—that he’d finally reached a point where he can turn what he was made to be into what he wants to be.

so full shifts in teen wolf are seamless, painless(iirc), and indistinguishable from their natural counterparts except for their glowy eyes.

theo’s full shift was partly engineered by the dread doctors and (we can assume) aided by him being half werecoyote. it isn’t exactly natural, so here come my headcanons: theo’s full shift is distinguishable from a regular wolf.

there are a few minute details that are just a little off, not enough for you to realize it, but enough that it pings something in the back of your mind. maybe his fur’s thinner than it should be, his irises a little too small, eyes a little human-like, his paws a little more similar to hands than they should be.

it’s juuuust subtle enough that unless he’s being Intensely Stared At in good lighting, nobody’s going to consciously notice, so it passes muster from the dread doctors; theo only really needs to full shift if he’s going to be, like, chasing teenagers around their high school after dark, so it’s never been much of a concern.

shifters are probably more aware of/sensitive to the feeling that Something’s Off, but since most werewolves can’t full shift, they don’t have any other references for what it’s supposed to look like, and they can’t pick out what’s different. those who CAN full shift definitely go “what the fuck” when they see him
