An Appeal to Our Food and Hospitality Community to Take Action Now for Gaza

Dear Industry Friends, 

We have come together as chefs, farmers, media makers, business owners, beverage professionals, and food workers from across our industry to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to U.S. support for Israel’s war crimes. We must break the silence around the genocide in Gaza. As of today, more than 7,000 Palestinians have been massacred in less than three weeks. Nearly half of them are children. Over 8,000 bombs have been dropped on Gaza, killing a Palestinian every 5 minutes. After hospitals run out of fuel,  the death toll will rise exponentially. Every second we choose to stay silent, without demanding that our government stop arming Israel with billions of our tax dollars, we allow another massacre to take place. 

We can prevent this violence by refusing to allow our government to fund and arm Israel’s decades-long military occupation. History has shown us that peace and safety for all in the region cannot come from the violent subjugation of Palestinians. We grieve the loss of all innocent life. However, violence begets violence, and we know this latest eruption did not occur in a vacuum. For 75 years, Palestinians have been killed, imprisoned, tortured, and robbed of their land and homes. In Gaza, 2.2 million people — more than half of whom are children — have been living under an inhumane siege for almost 17 years, and are cut off from the world, without access to water, food, or basic amenities needed to live a dignified and healthy life. For those living in Gaza, the last decade has been a slow genocide. 

As cultural stewards in this country, we have the power to counter the dehumanization of Palestinians. Israel has long weaponized food, erasing Palestinian people while claiming their cuisine. Here in the U.S., the appropriation of Palestinian foods as “Israeli” has led to more than Israelis profiting off of Palestinian culture; it is an erasure that has had real implications for Palestinians. It allows us to negate their cultural currency, and turn our attention away with more ease when we see Palestinian death. 

We must join our voices with Palestinians pleading for justice and protection right now. The situation is dire, and no amount of media coverage has discouraged Israel from its policy of ethnic cleansing and land theft as the U.S. government continues to protect Israel from global pressure for a ceasefire. We have been called upon by Palestinian civil society to join their struggle for freedom by joining the global movement for divestment and cultural boycott of Israel until it ends its horrific human rights abuses.

We ask our fellow food and beverage community to take a stand against genocide and ethnic cleansing and commit to three actions with us:

Call your congressional representatives to demand an immediate ceasefire and an end to unconditional U.S. funding of Israel. 

Divest from products, events, and trips that promote Israel until it dismantles its apartheid system and military occupation. 

Invest in events and projects that promote justice for Palestinians, whether connecting to a local organization to learn how to support, or amplify Palestinian voices and support them to share their food and culture on their own terms.

We recognize that this may be difficult given the frightening pressure put on us to remain silent. McCarthyist tactics cannot marginalize and divide us – we know we are not alone as the whole world is rising up against injustice and genocide. Thousands of artists worldwide have publicly endorsed BDS and the cultural boycott of Israel, including musicians, DJs, filmmakers and actors, visual artists, Black artists, Latin American artists, and countless others across all fields and continents. This is in spite of efforts made by Israeli government-linked lobby groups to suppress this solidarity.

We are all in this industry to affirm life and dignity for everyone. As those who care for others, it is our moral imperative to actively contribute to the care that Palestinians need right now as they struggle to survive and get free. I don't bring up politics and world events up on here very much, that isn't what this blog is about. This blog is for escapism from reality, but those who are not willing to speak out against brutality are complicit. And this is my largest platform.

Regarding Israel and Palestine I have seen many inaccurate assumptions and outright lies.

1ST CLAIM: One claim I hear ad nauseum is that Gaza elected Hamas and therefore they deserve punishment.

Let's break this down.

A. Hamas was elected around 2006. 17 years ago. They have not allowed elections since.

B. Roughly half of the Gazan population are under 18. This means half the population wasn't born during the last election. This means that of the Gazans who were alive many were too young to vote.

C. Hamas won by a 45 percent plurality, not a majority. This means that less than half of the Gazan who did vote did so for Hamas.

So taking these facts together we can conclude that only a fraction of a fraction of Gazans alive today elected Hamas.

In fact Netanyahu was happy to fund and prop up Hamas because doing so meant dividing Palestinians between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza. So Netanyahu is more to blame for Hamas than Palestinians are.

2ND CLAIM: Another thing I hear a lot is that this conflict and all of the casualties are the fault of Hamas. Let me be clear, I do not support Hamas or the October 7th attack that ended up with a civilian casualty rate of around 50 percent, but that one attack doesn't exist alone or without context and nuance as many on the pro-Israel side would have people believe.

No, that attack was one incident in a line of many. Starting with the brutal apartheid, displacement, and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Israel.

A slow motion genocide taking place over the course of many decades.

Let's look at some events leading up to and then following Oct. 7th.

It starts with the beginning of Israel. Even the often recited phrase "a land without people for a people without land" erases the existence of native people who had lived there for centuries.

In 1948 you have The Nakba. A mass displacement of Palestinians as Israel took their land. This flew in the face of the UN partition plan, after The Nakba Israel controlled 78 percent of the land, 25 percent more than the UN plan.

This trend of land theft has only continued.

Let's fast forward to more recent events.

2018-2019 The Great March of Return: For over a year there were peaceful marches protesting the Gaza border, this resulted in Israeli forces killing over 220 peaceful Palestinian protesters.

In 2019 Netanyahu admitted support for Hamas to prevent a 2 state solution.

In 2022 journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was targeted and killed by Israeli forces. Israeli forces also attacked her funeral.

Note that during this entire time Palestinians are arrested, even children, and kept in indefinite detention without trial.

In 2023 we then have the October 7th attack. But as you are now aware this isn't where the conflict started.

And clearly not where it has ended.

3RD CLAIM: And that brings us to the 3rd and most blatantly bullshit lie you will here on repeat. The notion that Israel only targets Hamas.

More UN workers have been killed in a 2 month period than have died in any other war since the UN's formation. Over 130.

If they were targeting Hamas then why have so many UN buildings, refugee camps, and hospitals been bombed?

If there goal wasn't civilians then why do civilians make up the majority of the casualities?

Why the medieval style siege/blockade that has caused hospitals to lose fuel and medicine and civilians to go hungry and thirsty?

Why parade civilians around in their underwear? Why laugh and cheer as a UN school is exploded?

Why leave babies in the NICU and force the hospital staff to leave with the promise an ambulance would be provided for the babies only for people to return once the IDF left and find the baby corpses rotting because the ambulance was never provided?

We can even leave Gaza to prove this is not about Hamas. Hamas does not lead the West Bank. And yet Palestinians there are being murdered and arrested at increased rates, their homes stolen by illegal settlers.

Israel officials have called this the Gaza Nakba, they have claimed they will make Gaza inhospitable, they have claimed there are no civilians in Gaza.

Netanyahu has said to remember Amalek.

What is Amalek? Amalek refers to Israels enemy in the bible. This phrase specifically, "Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys"

Israel wants to steal the little land the Palestinians have left. Even now they are herded and concentrated into ever smaller camps with no resources.

Idk what we can do about the situation. This post seems silly for all the good it will do. But maybe it will open the eyes of a couple people. I think that would make it worth it.

Genuine question for those of you who say that you want the dissolution of all states. What do you envision in place of states in terms of:

Logistics (i.e. making sure every area has the basic resources it needs in order to function and people not die for lack of water, food, fuel, medical supplies, etc.) Like not assigning these things necessarily but literally just getting them to various far-flung places.

Security (how do you prevent people from outside the area coming in and taking everything including resources, land, people, etc.) How do you prevent authoritarian groups coming in and occupying your formerly peaceful, non-hierarchical society?

Supporting people outside of affinity networks or within rigid social systems (a lot of disabled people, queer people, and other people on the social, familial, and religious outs are gonna die without some kind of appropriate systems in place to meet these needs.)

Addressing major environmental challenges that require cooperation over vast areas of land, if not global cooperation.

Rule of law, especially when it comes to human rights, freedom of movement, freedom of religion/culture, dispute resolution between governing bodies of whatever variety that doesn't involve war, etc. but also just like, basic laws governing interpersonal relationships (preventing rape, murder, theft, etc. and addressing the aftermath of those things in a humane, just way.)

Peaceful transition from states to whatever it is you imagine taking their place, without hemorrhaging lives from the most vulnerable populations.

And like, there's more that I'm sure I'd have questions about too, but these concerns are so basic that I just cannot continue the conversation without knowing what the plan is for these essential tenets of an organized society.

Don't get me wrong: I don't love states and wish we had a better system too. I am also painfully aware that states are failing many if not most of these all the time. However, what I would need to know is how what you are proposing is better than trying to improve what currently exists and isn't going to come at the cost of catastrophic loss of human life, human cultures, animal life, and land destruction. And not in a pie-in-the-sky way, a realpolitik way.

Police officers across New Brunswick are no longer investigating thefts of fuel from service stations unless there is a threat to public safety.

Earlier this month, the New Brunswick Association of Chiefs of Police sent a letter to petroleum retailers across the province, saying the change was needed because there are more effective ways of dealing with the steady increase in fuel thefts. The change took effect April 15.

Between 2020 and 2023, the province’s police agencies, including the RCMP, received 5,200 complaints about people stealing gas from fuel pumps, said Woodstock police Chief Gary Forward, who is also president of the chiefs’ association.

Forward said this type of crime could be prevented if the province introduced legislation requiring customers to pay before they fill up, as is already the case in Alberta and British Columbia. Fuel thefts at gas stations have been virtually eliminated in the two western provinces, he said. [...]

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Attorneys representing both living and deceased patients of an Oregon hospital filed a $303 million lawsuit against the facility on Tuesday after a nurse was accused of replacing prescribed fentanyl with nonsterile tap water in intravenous drips.

The wrongful death and medical malpractice complaint accuses Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford of negligence. The suit says the hospital failed to monitor medication administration procedures and prevent drug diversion by their employees, among other claims.

A spokesperson said the hospital had no comment.

Dani Marie Schofield, a former nurse at the hospital, was arrested in June and charged with 44 counts of second-degree assault. The charges stemmed from a police investigation into the theft and misuse of controlled substances that resulted in patient infections. She has pleaded not guilty.

Schofield is not named or listed as a defendant in the complaint filed Tuesday. A separate suit was filed against Schofield and the hospital earlier this year on behalf of the estate of a 65-year-old man who died.

The 18 plaintiffs in the new suit include nine patients and the estates of nine patients who died. According to the suit, the hospital began informing them in December that an employee had replaced fentanyl with tap water, causing bacterial infections.

“All Plaintiff Patients were infected with bacterium uniquely associated with waterborne transmission,” the complaint says.

All of the plaintiffs experienced mental anguish, according to the suit, which seeks millions of dollars in damages for medical expenses, lost income and the pain and suffering of those who died.

Medford police began investigating late last year, after hospital officials noticed a troubling spike in central line infections from July 2022 through July 2023 and told police they believed an employee had been diverting fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that has helped fuel the nation’s overdose epidemic, but it is also used in legitimate medical settings to relieve severe pain. Drug theft from hospitals is a longstanding problem.

Dad's bringing Mattie to the grease monkeys today cuz she needs an oil change (and I can't go because someone needs to watch the house, and I look young so mechanics always try to bilk me).

It's about 9am when he goes to start her up.

She doesn't start.

He keeps trying. She doesn't start. He pulls the choke, maybe it's the chill from last night? No start. Her engine turns over and roars, and then three seconds later it dies. All further attempts and she won't turn over at all. What the fuck?

He calls me out. "Come look at this." We troubleshoot for about 15. Can't figure out the problem. He tries to start her again. I smell petrol and signal him to call quits—overloaded the fuel line. I pop the bonnet, take off the air filter, set that in the grass and let the fuel line and engine and carb vent out the fumes. We wait for the smell to dissipate.

Five minutes later the smell's gone. I get in to see if I can start her—it's been 30 something years since Dad's driven a manual choke, but I drove one just last year in the freezing outback winter, an '87 Holden. And I learnt to drive in a '67 Mustang, manual choke. Sure, I totalled that car, but it wasn't related to the choke at all. Maybe Dad's just doing it wrong.

I pull the choke. Dad confirms from up front that the choke is working. I keep the choke closed, turn the ignition, and tap the accel. She doesn't start.

What the fuck? She was running like a beast yesterday!

I get out. While I get out I happen to look down and I see the manual fuel lever. And it's facing the door.

See, Mattie's a 1968 Ford F250 Camper Special. The Camper Special is made to carry a jackoff camper in the tray. Naturally, it has two tanks for petrol because the added weight is hell on the engine, one tank in the cab under the seat, and one tank in the tray. Now, normally you'd switch tanks from the switch on the dash, but as we've established nothing electrical in her really wants to work, and that includes the switch in the dash. So instead you have to use the emergency backup lever below the seatbelt feeder on the floor of the driver's side, next to the door. If the lever points forward it feeds from the cab tank, if the lever points backwards it feeds from the rear tank.

But the lever was pointing sideways, toward the driver's door. I'd suggested doing this last night as a hypothetical manual fuel shuftoff switch, something people often install on classic cars (or expensive modern cars) to prevent the cars from being stolen. If you run the car with the switch enabled, the only petrol the engine gets is whatever is left in the fuel line. You'll get about a metre before the engine dies. Now, theoretically, the tank switch should work the same way if it's rigged how I think it is—forward opens the front tank valve but closes the back, backwards opens the rear tank valve but closes the front, and sideways... either opens both, or closes both.

Turns out, it closes both. Cuz I got back in, reached down and flipped the lever forward, and turned the ignition. Tapped the accel and she roared up without issue—didn't even need to use the choke.

We sabotaged my truck and both of us ADHD idiots completely forgot we'd sabotaged the truck, so we spent 35 minutes trying to troubleshoot an issue WE caused despite there actually not being any problem at all besides our own forgetfulness.

I feel like a bloody idiot but at least we know the lever is effective theft prevention!

Along with other anti-imperialist formations across the world, the Friends of the Filipino People in Struggle expresses its solidarity with the Palestinian people and the resistance groups waging armed struggle in the exercise of their right to self-determination.

We call on our members, friends, allies and all freedom loving people to carry out actions of solidarity with the Palestinian people in these days so important to their cause and the global anti-imperialist struggle.

Ever since the start of Zionist colonization at the end of the 19th century – supported by the European colonial powers through Sykes-Picot, the British Mandate, and the United Nations –, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families have lost their homes and livelihoods during the Nakba, millions of Palestinians were forced to become refugees in camps spread across the Middle East and elsewhere, and millions more live under brutal conditions created by the Israeli occupation. 

Over the years, we have seen entire generations of Palestinians who were born and died as prisoners in their own land, held hostage by the Israeli occupation force that surrounded and blockaded them, and compelled to watch as more and more Israeli settlers and ultranationalists continued to take what little remained of the land supposedly promised them. 

SUPPORT THE PALESTINIAN STRUGGLE AGAINST INJUSTICE

We have seen how Israeli security forces killed those who dared to resist, or incarcerated them without trial or even the semblance of due process. 

We have seen how countless unarmed Palestinians, including children, have been murdered or maimed by Israeli bombs and bullets. 

We have seen how Israel – armed and financed by the United States and European states – denied the Palestinians their most basic human rights and, through increasingly draconian security policies, dehumanized them and even desecrated their most cherished and holiest sites. 

We have seen how, in the name of counter-terrorism, Israel has prevented international aid from reaching occupied Palestinian territories, while designating or persecuting humanitarian workers and human rights defenders as “terrorists”. 

We have seen the hypocrisy and racism inherent in the Western governments’ rejection of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination even as this right is celebrated when invoked by other nations. 

Everything that we have seen, the Palestinians experienced first-hand. They are a people who, for the longest time, have known nothing but occupation and the cruelty and viciousness of a regime that appears intent to take away from them not just every inch of land, but every shred of dignity they have. 

It is therefore not surprising that the Palestinians are fighting back. Against a backdrop of suffering and oppression, we can only see this latest uprising of the Palestinian resistance as a people’s bid to defend their rights and to expel an occupying power from their territories. We cannot expect the Palestinians to simply accept the inhumanity being inflicted on them, or the gradual yet systematic theft of their homeland, or the destruction of their heritage. We cannot expect passivity in the face of such grave injustices. 

ROAD TO PEACE – LIBERATION

We must acknowledge that the only road to peace is for Palestine to be liberated from the river to the sea, for the right of return for all Palestinian refugees, and for the world to recognize the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. How ever way the current uprising develops, this will not be the final chapter of the Palestinian struggle for their homeland – not as long as Palestinians are denied their right to return and to freedom. It is a struggle that we must openly embrace and support, cognizant of the history that gave rise to it and the inequity that fuels it.

Long live the Palestinian struggle for return and liberation from the river to the sea!

Victory to the Palestinian people and their heroic resistance!

Long live the bond between the Palestinian and Filipino people – together we will be victorious!

Synopsis: On Cybertron, before the war… Orion Pax and his team prepare for their attempt to steal the explosive replica of the Matrix of Leadership hidden within the body of Nominus Prime in the Primal Basilica. Incredulous, Prowl refuses to get involved, but promises not to blow the whistle on Pax if he keeps Prowl's partner Chromedome out of the action. As Prowl departs, Chromedome and Roller return from the Academy of Advanced Technology with three of its students selected by Pax's senator friend to help in the heist, all "outliers" possessed of special powers: the technology-disrupting Glitch, the magnetic Windcharger and the super-learner Skids.

Aboard the Lost Light, Rewind's story takes a short break so Ratchet can check on the progress of the still-unresponsive Rung. Swerve pilfers some especially hard "Nightmare Fuel" liquor from Trailbreaker and begins dishing it out, jokingly getting Rung's name wrong and being warned by Ratchet that he particularly hates that. Everyone settles down as Chromedome gets back to his part of the story, describing his visit to the workshop of Iacon Mechaforensics ballistics expert and Primal Vanguard fanboy Ironfist, from whom he obtained a replica Matrix they could swap the bomb out for. Ratchet interrupts for a moment to recount an exchange between him, Roller and Pax that followed, as Roller attempted to warn Pax of various questionable activities his senator friend was involved in, including the recruitment and modification of other Autobots in addition to Pax himself, but Pax would not hear it.

In the Lost Light medibay, Rodimus balks at First Aid's diagnosis of Red Alert's comatose state as the result of attempted suicide. Ultra Magnus attempts to restrain him as he grows angrier, accidentally gouging large dents in his arms that shock him into relaxing. Magnus proposes putting Red Alert in cold storage until their circumstances are more conducive to his mental well-being, and with Drift's agreement, Rodimus sadly does so.

The story of the heist continues, with Ratchet describing how each of the outliers used their special powers to help penetrate the Primal Basilica while Chromedome and Roller remained behind to guard the senator. Their approach hidden from the Sky Spy network thanks to Roller's hacking skills, Windcharger magnetically levitated the team over the heads of the Triorian Guard of Triple Changers standing watch at the Basilica, while Glitch deactivated the security systems so that Skids could (indignantly) lower Pax into position with his grappling hook. Discovering that the Matrix-bomb was locked in place, Pax switched places with Ratchet, whose incredible hands picked the locks with ease. Things almost went south when Glitch patted Skids on his back, jamming his winch and causing Ratchet to drop the bomb, but Windcharger saved the day by magnetically preventing its fall. The theft successfully completed, the team departed, but, having not been contacted by Roller at the appointed time, Pax sped on ahead to investigate; Chromedome takes over the story to describe Pax's return, just in time to find that Senate thugs Kroma, Macabre and the Heavies had attacked their safehouse.

Pax took out one of the Heavies, but when Kroma held his gun against Roller's head and proposed an exchange, the senator agreed to go with him. The remaining Heavy, Anvil, remained behind to finish off Pax, but Pax used the Matrix-bomb to destroy his attacker, then unearthed Chromedome from the rubble to lead him to the Institute, figuring Kroma had taken the senator there. Alas, they discovered it was deserted—because despite its name, it was not unique. The senator had potentially been taken to any one of hundreds of hidden facilities, lost to them.

Such is the end of the story: not a happy one, but an ending nonetheless. Tailgate has a few remaining questions, which Rewind answers: Proteus did not keep his promise, and much to Tailgate's surprise, Orion Pax became Optimus Prime. Sadly, Rung remains non-responsive, but when alarms suddenly begin blaring throughout the ship, and everyone heads for battle stations, Skids decides to try one last thing: he leans close to Rung, and deliberately mispronounces his name several times. Quietly, the psychiatrist awakens and corrects him.

On Cybertron, before the war… Orion Pax is approached by another of the senator's recruits, Zeta. And elsewhere, in one of the many Institutes, two staffers talk about the newest victim of Shadowplay: a senator who is also being subjected to the head-and-hand replacement ritual known as empurata.
