saw your post about no longer wanting to be a phan blog and i just wanted to say i get you especially the reaction to this tour has been very uncomfortable and i could never figure out exactly why it felt... overbearing ig??? but it has been building and the tour leak and announcement just seemed to put a spotlight on people seem to have learned nothing from the previous years and seem to think that now that they're back it's okay to push their boundaries because they're engaging with us again. and tbh i appreciate you for helping put into words the discomfort ive been feeling and it sucks that it turned out like this that the enjoyment of the thing gets harder because of others

I was so so hoping it wouldn't get like this again

The first 5-6 months of the gaming channel being back were mostly wonderful

Everyone was behaving and respectfully enjoying dnp being back as a duo

I've seen/felt it building up over the past few months but I kept ignoring it because I figured it was just newer phans who didn't know about any of "the lore"

But every time I'd check their page out it would almost always be someone in their mid-late 20s who has been around for 10+ years

I was dumbfounded

I genuinely cannot believe people still treat Dan and Phil like tv characters who exist purely for entertaining the masses

"There was an error with your ticket, I'm sorry," your friend Sarah said with a pouty face.

"What do you mean??" You panicked as it was you and your two friends Sarah and Melissa on face time the night before going to see Stray Kids in concert. "I already took off work, we have an outfit planned together, we-."

"I know, I'm sorry," Sarah interrupted you as Melissa sat quiet on the other end. "For some reason I'm only seeing two tickets in my Ticketmaster."

"Did you try calling or emailing them??" Your head was thumping, making it hard to think properly.

"I did! And they gave me an excuse, saying they couldn't do anything." You heard her voice go high pitch, an indicator that you know she is lying as you saw Melissa put her head down. Are they seriously lying to me?? You three have been best friends for years and know every little detail about them.

You stared at your outfit that sat on the chair in front of your vanity, waiting to be worn tomorrow. We were all going to match wearing their case 143 outfits but guess that's not happening now.

"Are you okay?" Sarah asked as you were too pissed to even look at her through the phone.

"Yup..." Is all you could let out before piercing your lips tightly together, trying to hold yours tears from falling.

"We'll talk to you tomorrow..."

"K...bye." You hung up the phone and let the tears stream down, frustrated and confused. You tossed your phone away from you, couldn't stand to look at it right now.

Why didn't they want me to go? There's no way there could have been a problem with the tickets...this fucking sucks...

A ding went off, grabbing your phone to see Sarah sending your money back since you paid for your half. And we had floor seats too...this whole day is fucking ass.

You turned your body around and stared up to the ceiling, wonder what you could do. You figured if you go on to the websites, tickets will be marked up to a crazy amount. Let me see if there's a person out there selling tickets online... There's always another way.

You went on to Facebook in the Stray Kids group chat that was purposely made for the city you live in, where they were performing. You typed your question, seeing if anyone was selling tickets for tomorrow night. You even posted your question on Twitter as last resort.

A few hours go by while you tried watching TV, reading A03 stories just to past the time away when you finally heard a notification from your phone, quickly checking to see if it was someone from the group.

Gabby: Hi there! I saw your post in the Stray Kids group chat and I actually have an extra ticket if you're willing to sit with me and my friends. We can get a little loud lol

You: Hi! 🙋🏻‍♀️ That's not a problem at all! I'm ready to fan girl! I don't care where we are sitting but how much?

Gabby: so they're $589 because we're on the floor with sound check. Our friend couldn't make it because she got sick and didn't want anyone else to catch the flu. Is that something within your price range?

You: Yes! I can send you the money. But just want to make sure you're a real person. Lol 😅

Gabby: 😂 I understand! Here, we can face time that way I can tell you what time to be there and everything!

You: sounds good!

You fixed your hair a tiny bit, wiped away the tears that were left and saw her using face time through Facebook messenger.

"Hi there!" Gabby waved.

"Hi, thank you so much for reaching out! And I love your hair, you're so pretty!" You complimented her hair that was black with dark blue highlights.

"Of course! And thank you! I got it done just in time for the concert," she laughed. "Here are the tickets, since I bought them." She held up her laptop, showing them.

"Cool, what's your Venmo so I can send the money?" She told you her Venmo as you typed it in, "thanks!"

"Of course! But may I ask why your asking for tickets so late?"

You could tell she was being sincere and you didn't know why but before you knew it, you were explaining everything that happened.

"Fuck, I'm so sorry, that's fucking terrible! They're not good friends."

"Yeah...im realizing it now. It's just...they're the ones who got me into K-pop. My other friends could care less about the music."

"Well, consider us your new friends! We're going to have a fun time! I just got your money...so can't wait to see you tomorrow. Lineup to check in is at 10 and sound check is at four. I'll send you my number so you can call me when you get there. We're planning to arrive at like 9:30 since the seats on the floor are assigned."

"Okay, perfect. Sounds great! See you tomorrow morning!"

You hung up and threw your body back on to the bed with a smile on your face, couldn't believe someone so nice reached out to you. And not with any ticket...but floor seats, plus sound check! Great, I'll run into Sarah and Melissa. You rolled your eyes annoyed but knew you were going to ignore them and have the best time of your life.

You looked over at the outfit you had originally planned, making you think of something else.

You got up, threw the outfit into the hamper and searched your closet for a last minute outfit.

You found a thin yellow long sleeve shirt that your mom got you one year and have only worn once. Paired it with a washout denim short skirt that sat on your thighs and found your light brown Dr. Martens boots that made your a bit taller from the thick bottom. I'll add some jewelry in the morning and I'll be good to go. Maybe I can stop at the store in the morning to get a can of blue hairspray to match his from the music video?

You got ready for bed and quickly fell asleep, excited for tomorrow.

lol i contacted my venue because they dont have a page up for dnp's show yet and i was told by the venue they're going to post about it today so yeah i think the ticketmaster leak truly fucked them over and today was the day they were going to announce it but they had to do it early

if i may explain a bit of the psychology behind the backlash, i think it’s because people have gotten paranoid about media they enjoy

i think that because of the critical re-evaluation of so many pieces of media, people- and mcr fans in particular- have become worried their favorite pieces of media or favorite bands are “problematic” in some way. they don’t want to let their guard down because what if the media they like IS problematic and they’ve been liking something bigoted all this time? no one wants to seem like someone who willfully pretends that everything problematic in a piece of media doesn’t exist because “it’s good”.

so mcr fans criticize the band any way they can. they try to find parts that are problematic so they can be critical, and not seem like a “crazy obsessed fan who thinks the band can do no wrong”. the whole ticketmaster thing was just fuel to the fire.

and i will say that yeah, mcr DID (and sometimes still does) do some weird and sometimes problematic shit, but that shouldn’t damper your enjoyment of the band. as an mcr fan, i’ve learned to take the good with the bad and enjoy the band for what it is. i’m not defending all of their behavior, but i still enjoy their music and their activism against homophobia and transphobia.

In addition to that, the thing is that, well - I was gonna say "i hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to be an apologist" but fuck it I don't really give a shit what they're gonna think i am, not when i know that what I'm gonna say isn't wrong - when you're a human being producing art which is basically content based on the things that make you human, it's very unlikely, if not impossible, that everything you'll produce is always gonna be flawless, or always reflecting something good about you. People forget that art needs humans to exist and vice versa, and our brains are poisoned with things we shouldn't think about each other and ourselves. Sometimes that just happens to be visible, specially when you're a well known artist. Truth be told, if those anti-fans knew how awful of a person i was in my early teen years, they would be making an insane effort to make sure I'd end up killing myself. They would never recognize my humanity, they'd never see a person who grew up in an environment that lead me to repeating that awful behavior that i was forced to endure and ended up accepting as a norm. They would never do that, to them I'd be nothing but a really massive inconvenience wasting the oxygen that i would be unworthy of breathing.

I met amazing people in this fandom, and those are the same people those anti fans (I'll call them anti fans because it's just easier and, cmon, it just makes sense) absolutely despose because they, well.. we would be falling into crazy hardcore fan territory. Tell ya what, i prefer being in the hardcore fan territory who's too forgiving than being in the same territory of people who say they would never want to meet gerard because they'd want to hurt them and who make me feel like I'd never be welcome. Specially with my disorder that makes it really hard for me to have a good relationship with people and just the act of socialization in general. It's already hard for me, and my disorder along with my past make it harder because I'm still growing and learning and unlearning things, and I'm incredibly desensitized to a lot of shit. To give you an idea of how far it goes, i thought of tattooing Gerard's knife speech because it genuinely felt exactly like what i feel all the time. Who do you think will be more welcoming? people who are a little too forgiving or people who are actively hunting a reason to treat you like shit?

I really don’t understand how Zayn fans are saying only the long term fans should buy tickets. I saw this happening with Niall and Louis too. I’m all for everyone having their own opinion but to call someone out for not being a fan long enough is just bizarre to me.

soooooo this is a tricky one. we see it with pretty much any super famous and well loved high profile artist/band, most recently, with Oasis.

while oasis’s fanbase is a totally different demographic to one direction and their solo careers, there has been MASSIVE arguments about who deserves tickets, if you’re a “real fan” or over the age of ___ you should get first access etc etc., and it’s a very frustrating debate.

I couldn’t give less of a fuck about oasis btw lol (sorry louis), so I’m not deep into whatever is happening there, but that’s the gist of what I’ve seen. but listen… the thing is is that the demand is extremely high and they unfortunately can’t play to absolutely everybody who wants a ticket. more frustratingly, the prices of tickets are now through the roof, so a lot of fans can’t even see their fave artist even with a ticket at the very back of the venue. it’s disgusting and live music should not be a luxury, but I digress

Personally, I can empathise with the folks who feel this way. I’m not saying that new fans don’t deserve tickets, or that they shouldn’t buy tickets, but I think the frustration runs far deeper than that for these folks, and that’s not the newer fans’ fault. It’s the ticket buying system, and Artist loyalty.

Ticketmaster is proper broken these days too hahahaha. The dynamic pricing (anon who messaged me about this I am getting to you promise xx) model, the website not handling copious amounts of traffic which they should be expecting, multiple onsales at the same time for a million different shows, the number system, etc…. It’s just all a bit yucky, and it’s frustrating fans to no end. Just have a look at all the TS stuff that happened with the Eras tour. Fans were purchasing tickets and then lost them immediately, got kicked out before the timer finished, tickets flew out the door, so many were bought by scalpers because of the high demand, some people were in line on that website for 3 hours before it finally let them in and said that there were tickets still available, but when they went to pay, the tickets disappeared. It’s crazy.

And so ticketing try to break this up into timezones, presales, etc. but it’s still too much to handle and not enough tickets. And it comes down to how much the artist wants to perform, venue bookings, profit, exclusivity, scheduling and it’s very frustrating and unfair that only some folks get tickets, but it is the way it is. But I still hold Ticketmaster/ticketek/all ticketing platforms to up their damn game because it’s bullshit lol

Anyway, so that’s already a hurdle of going and seeing your fave artist. So you’re already not guaranteed a ticket due to how many people want to go, and then that frustration morphs and it’s like well… I should be guaranteed a ticket because I’ve been here for years and I’ve grown up with this band/they’ve meant everything to me/this is finally my chance to see them/ive followed them for 15 years or whatever, and then that brings in an emotional side to it that just exacerbates the frustration of the availability vs demand.

On top of that, when it comes to 1d, they went on “hiatus” like 9 years ago, and they’re all doing solo stuff. 3/5 are doing successful world tours, liam hasn’t dropped any new music/marketing/a plan to tour in ages, and zayn is finally comfortable enough to be back. It’s amazing! I’m sooooooo happy for him. But it’s a very tiny tour, and he hasn’t toured in an extremely long time, and there were a hell of a lot of zayn girlies in the 1d days. So it’s the loyalty, of being a fan from the 1d days, throughout the hiatus, following all of their solo careers afterwards and still being an active part of the fandom, can feel like you deserve this more than others because you’ve been here the whole time. And no one deserves to see live music more than other people. I’m a massive believer that it should be accessible to everyone. But when we talk about “real fans” or not, it’s so much more of a larger problem than just who has been a fan for longer. It’s all of the above, and venue sizes/avails, and finances etc.

It’s a bit different with Harry because he did a million stadiums, so way more people had way more chances to get tickets… the demand was high, but there was a lot more availability. Louis, niall, and zayn have been and are doing theatre and arena shows, which are not as often consecutively in the same city as harry’s, and so the fear of missing out on tickets just runs all that deeper.

You can’t verify a “real fan” though. Like… how would you do a “real fan” presale? A buzzfeed quiz on how many songs you can name? A photo of all your merch? Tweets from when you were 13 about that artist? Nope. Doesn’t work like that, which just layers on that exasperation. Buying tickets has now become hard work.

And everyone wants to see their favourite artist, but if you’ve been waiting 15 years as opposed to 2, you can understand the frustration with the system. It’s a similar thing as the argument on 18+ shows for 1d’s reunion (which I am for btw) - not ALL shows will be 18+, there will be obviously AA shows in those same cities as well. That’d be the deal, and that’s how they’d run it. And it’s not trying to be a “cooler” show, even though I think those boys would jump at the chance to only play to 18+ and make it NOT a family show bc they’re disgusting lol, but it’s a good way to divvy up the tickets. And there are fans that are over 18 who have only liked 1d/solos for 2 months, and they could get a ticket. But the point is that there is room for people who grew up with them to have a chance.

It’s unfortunate that people feel this way though, because we shouldn’t be taking it out on each other and deciding who should be able to support our fave artist/band, it should be good vibes and everyone should be able to see them. But when you’ve been around for almost 14/15 years reblogging photos and actively taking part in a fandom, it’s understandable to feel like you deserve a ticket.

I don’t condone any of these feelings to then become attacks towards newer or younger fans though, mind you. I think it’s awful to start making people feel like shit that they haven’t been a fan long enough, and that’s very yucky. You shouldn’t feel like you’re not worthy to be in a fandom or go to a concert just because you’ve not been around as long, ever. That’s not cool. We’re all here enjoying ourselves as a team, supporting people who make us happy. Everyone who’s a fan, is a real fan.

So yeah. This is quite a ramble but I hope it may have helped unravel a bit as to why people are expressing these feelings, and why they have them. And we can talk about all different ways to make ticketing easier, like the ballot system, 18+/AA, more shows, multiple ticketing platforms etc. but at the end of the day, this is what we’re dealing with and people are annoyed af at the whole thing.
