Buck doesn't tell Maddie about the break-up until 2 days later. he's sat at her dining room table, clutching a cup of coffee between his hands while he tells her about what happened. he doesn't look at his sister the entire time he talks, doesn't want to see the pity on her face. he ignores the tears as they slide down his cheeks, dripping down off his chin onto the sleeves of the hoodie he'd thrown on before coming over. when his story has finally run its course, they both remain quiet for a moment and Buck's thankful Jee's playing in the living room because the sounds of her talking to her dolls drown out his quiet sob when Maddie removes the cup from the death grip he has on it. she grabs on tightly to both of his hands, and it's then that Buck realizes that he's shaking. he thinks he's been shaking since Tommy walked out of his life.

it's the next evening when someone knocks on his door. Buck's heart is in his throat as he walks over to answer it, feels his stomach swoop in both relief and disappointment when he sees it's his sister and niece. Jee pushes past him into the apartment like she owns the place, and Buck watches her go before turning back to see Maddie holding up a reusable bag. "After you left, she asked if you were okay. I told her you were sad because someone you cared about wasn't going to be around anymore. So she insisted we come over so she could make you cookies." Maddie's eyes sparkle as she smiles at him then over at her daughter. "Howie always makes sugar cookies when either of us is sad. So Jee said she had to do that for you, too." The lump that's taken residence in his throat makes it impossible to speak as he takes the bag from his sister, who squeezes his arm. "Have some fun with your niece tonight. If you need anything, don't hesitate to call. I'll pick her up in the morning."

and that's how Buck finds himself tossing his apron on before helping Jee-Yun into the kids' size one he keeps around just for her. they get the ingredients out of the bag, Buck pulls out his mixer, and they make a tupperware full of chocolate chip cookies and then one of sugar cookies. Jee laughs when he dabs some flour on her nose. Buck laughs when she smiles at him, face covered in melted chocolate. when everything's cleaned up and Jee's been tucked in upstairs in his bed for the night, Buck is standing in the kitchen putting the rest of the cookies away when realizes his hands are steady as he snaps the lid shut. his knees wobble, and he sits down hard on the last stool at the island, the same one Tommy sat in before he broke Buck's heart and cries the hardest he has in days.

like I am well aware that this is just a tv show and these are fictional characters and relationships and it literally isn't the end of the world but I will never understand how a show can have such a good thing going and then they just go and fuck it up. like, this whole thing was completely out of left field, and for what reason? you have such a beautiful coming out story for a main character after 7 years and you give him a boyfriend and it looks like it's going great, they're supportive and smitten with each other and you even hint that there might be love already there and then you have them break up in that same episode? hello?

'weirded out' and it's just a multiple scenes of Buck explaining the most unhinged scenarios to a very confused looking Tommy who is trying his best to support his boyfriend while being extremely concerned about the entire situation

the flight instructor who has only ever used a simulator not being able to help Athena land the plane safely so they need a new plan and fast but there isn't time to bring in anyone so they start trying to find someone on-site and that person just so happens to be Mr. Tommy Kinard?? 👀

and you know what the real kicker is? it's that they still have the entire second half of season 8 to film, don't they? like they could absolutely try and fix this somehow if they really wanted to, they could take the time to do some reworking for whatever they might have planned so that Buck could actually put up a real fight to get Tommy back and to show him he truly is the one, that even if he is Buck's first he can 100% also be his last! but it just feels like they don't even want to give that any thought, like they've fully moved on from bucktommy and it's not worth their time or effort to fight for this relationship they talked so extensively about nurturing and handling with an immense amount of care since 7x04 and that just really, really sucks...

and you know what really gets me mad about all these people cheering on the breakup or being all high and mighty about it is that if this was buddie, y'all would be screaming crying on the floor about it. you would say it doesn't make sense. You would say it was bad writing. You would most likely be saying the exact same thing bucktommy shippers are currently saying because that's how people react when something happens to their favorite ship. but since it's a ship you don't like, you want to stand on your little podiums and shout, "Buck's still bi!" and "it's not bad writing just because you didn't like the outcome!" and "you should have seen this coming, the cracks in the foundation were there. How could you not see it!?" and something that has become the worst most overused line in this fandom "use your critical thinking skills!"

and I'd just like to say that your opinions aren't superior because you never shipped Buck and Tommy. your opinions aren't superior because you remained a faithful buddie warrior. your opinions aren't superior because you somehow apparently saw this breakup coming from a mile away. you don't have to sit there and demean how people feel over their favorite ship ending when you would be doing the exact same thing if you were in their position. y'all like to claim that you're grown-ups, like to act as if you don't care about this shit, yet you jump at the very first opportunity to put people down just for expressing some frustration and sadness about something they enjoyed but you didn't. and idk but that doesn't seem very grown to me. It just makes you look childish.
