Last night I saw my first ballet, the final performance of "Oscar" in Melbourne. I bought my tickets literally the day before; after knowing about the show since last year, anxiously awaiting tickets, deciding they were too expensive and then finally deciding it would kill me to miss out. And I'm so grateful to myself for that uncharacteristically spontaneous decision (and spend), because this could not have been a more perfect first ballet for me. Oscar Wilde is one of my favourite authors of all time, and this felt like a show that truly offered a meaningful interpretation of his life and works as opposed to just using his name to sell tickets. I know nothing about ballet really but the fact that this was an explicitly gay show, exploring shame, yearning, love and lust - with some of the most intense kissing I've ever seen!!!! - felt truly groundbreaking. Seeing Oscar's story of persecution play out in a mainstream, acclaimed production by The Australian Ballet made the juxtaposition of past and present queerness so incredibly piercing, and I couldn't help but wonder how he would feel if he knew the public would come to pity and celebrate him rather than revile him - and what might he have written had he lived in a time and place like this, where a packed theatre can watch men dance and kiss and be moved instead of disgusted?

I'm rambling, but that's only a taste of the thoughts and emotions this show brought out in me. The choreography, the dancers, the sets, the MUSIC!!!!! and the story; it was all intoxicating. I cried several times and left with a heavy chest but in a good way.

I believe they're now taking the show to Sydney and if you have the chance to see it I would strongly encourage it!

Wrote some thoughts down during a car ride a while ago. I’ve tried to express this general notion before, but... here's some further rambling!

A general metaphor:

Clemcy will come in and wreck your house in a fit of pique, and then revel in the wreckage as a satisfying job well done.

If he comes to your house and finds it already a wreck, he will make fun of you and it and everything in between; or, if he spots some last few bastions of functionality, he might keep his mouth shut about the rest of it but start pulling apart those bastions just to see what happens.

If he needs something from you he will hold the wreck of your house over you as leverage; either doling out help with it, or using it as blackmail, or whatever he needs to do, but generally holding the situation at arm’s length otherwise.

But. But. If he didn’t wreck the place himself. And if he can’t find a way to have fun wrecking anything in it further. And if, for some reason, he is stuck for any length of time in the house.

…he might not be able to keep himself from straightening things up.

It won’t be arranged the way you prefer in the end! It will not be a gentle process! He will be downright vicious if you try to stop him! He is not straightening things up For You.

…but the floor will be clean. And the appliances will work. And the shelves will be organized. Possibly even labeled.

This shit sucks so bad... I miss having energy... I miss not feeling like shit every day

I haven't felt "healthy"* since I was 12. I think puberty was when my nervous system was like "oh so we're like permanently gonna be this stressed... oh" and just gave out bc that's when my cfs started. Never stood a chance

*I mean I didn't ever feel like a normal healthy child, but I felt a hell of a lot closer to healthy than now
