FireflySummers’ Guide to Arguing Against the Use of AI Image Generators
(AKA I hate AI image generators so fucking much that I published a whole ass academic article on it)
Read the Paper: Art in the Machine: Value Misalignment and AI "Art"
Citation: Allred, A.M., Aragon, C. (2023). Art in the Machine: Value Misalignment and AI “Art”. In: Luo, Y. (eds) Cooperative Design, Visualization, and Engineering. CDVE 2023. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 14166. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-43815-8_4
The purpose of the original paper and now this post is the following:
Provide at least one academic article that you can cite. (Full paper + citation available below)
Make explicit community values that have previously been implicit, in order to better examine your own perceptions of the online artist community, and where you sit within it.
Provide rebuttals to common pro-AI talking points, with the intention of shutting down the conversation and reclaiming the narrative.
What this paper and post cannot do:
Act as a sole authority about the online artist community and its values. We are not a monolith, and it is up to you to think critically about what, exactly, you want to take away from this discussion.
Provide a way to convince AI Evangelists that what they’re doing is wrong and bad and needs to stop. You will never convince them. Again, focus on shutting them down and reclaiming the narrative.
Final Disclaimer: I'm a very fallible researcher who is still very much learning how to do academia. I cannot speak for the entirety of the online artist community or fanartist community. We all have different lived experiences. I have done my best to include diverse voices; however if you have concerns or critiques, I am open to hearing them.
If you show up to debate in favor of AI image generators, you will be automatically blocked.

Tutorial Examples: @sabertoothwalrus, @ash-and-starlight, @miyuliart, @hometownrockstar, @deoidesign, @cinnamonrollbakery
If you have read this far, thank you very much. I hope that you have found a constructive lens for approaching the war with AI image generators, as well as a new tool for shutting down debate and reclaiming the narrative.

Remember: if you're afraid of AI art there are specific tools for poisoning your portfolio. Don't let AI bros destroy our community, they win when they chase artists off a platform as much as they win when they steal art. And more so, it hurts ai more to poison art then to remove it, it's like giving it negative art.
Please poison your art. It's the only way if that tumblr deal is real.

I'm going to post another hot take here and be mean. Fuck people who make ai covers, I especially hate how popular they are in the Sekai community. Even if you say "please support the vas" it's still so disrespectful?

I'm so sick of AI art.
I went searching for a stock photo last night, only to find that there are hundreds of AI generated pictures of the specific thing I searched for- except not because they were wrong. They're not even good. Not that quality would convince me of their worth, but it just adds to the insult of having to sift through all the shit.

APPARENTLY THESE DONT WORK!! USE GLAZE FOR BETTER MORE SECURE RESULTS!!
I made my own ai disturbance filters
Original post: I'm like 80% sure they'll work? I think the more of these we make the better so the ai does not learn how to work around them :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway uhh yeah hope u like them feel free to use them
u dont gotta give credit if u do but i would love to see them in use if you use them so give me an @ if u want to, or dont :3
To be completely honest I’m probably gonna use this as well as glaze mainly because I’m paranoid but keep in mind glaze is the only source we know works 100% (maybe the ibispaint feature too? I haven’t looked into that) but yeah keep your art safe my lovely people!!

Some shameless POS literally used AI to steal my friend's animated film
I usually don't post stuff like this but this shit's insane and downright insulting. I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2022, a pretty well known animation school in the US, and every animation student on their final year of college has to make an animated film for our final thesis. If you have any idea of the animation making process, you would know that making an entire film by yourself in one year is batshit insane and extremely exhausting, to the point where I'm still feeling the effects of the process on my physical and mental wellbeing 2 years after I graduated. Once more, my friends and I did it during the covid period, which was another level of hell. I was literally watching my grandfather's funeral while working in the labs at 2am because I couldn't fly home to attend it because we had to make this film. This film was our lifeblood, the culmination of 4 years of hell at school which was suppose to be our gateway into the industry. Tldr, it's fucking difficult to do, especially on your own.
So imagine 2 years later and I wake up to a bunch of messages on our alumni chat where a dear friend of mine posted a link to a tiktok video of someone literally stealing her entire film and superimpose it shot by shot and claim it as their own ad for their AI game. As animators, we aren't unaware of people stealing our films and reposting them elsewhere. Heck my own film "The End" was stolen from our school vimeo and posted on tiktok BEFORE IT WAS EVEN OFFICIALLY RELEASED, and that tiktok got hundreds of thousands of views while a year after my own real release my film is still struggling in the thousands.
But this
This is a fucking new low.
Can you imagine? A fresh graduate going through literal blood sweat and tears to make a film on their own that is so important to their future in the industry, to get them a job, with a film that represents a part of themselves to the world, just used as fodder for some stupid tech assholes? It's infuriating. It's insulting. It's literally a big fuck you to the hundreds of students who spent their lives toiling to make these films from the heart who are just desperate to get into the industry.
The animation industry right now is in complete shambles. People are graduating from animation schools with thousands of dollars in dept only to be met with a wasteland of minimum wage and lack of funding and competing for jobs with people who have already been in the industry for years affected by the massive layoffs not only in the movie but also the gaming industries. These films we make for our thesis aren't just films made for fun, they represent our lifeblood, our only opportunity to get a job as a graduate in this sea of hell. If you didn't make a good film, chances are you're never even stepping foot in the industry ever. It's our golden ticket that we would put thousands of hours through, sleepless nights and pushing through no matter the circumstances of sickness and pain it caused us.
And now some dumb fucking AI using dickbags see that and decide it's worth nothing.
Here's a link to my friend's real film. Please go watch it and support her work. I'm not even gonna link the other piece of shit tiktok because I don't want that video to even get a single extra view but here's a recording my friend made so you can see this malarkey side by side.
It's heartbreaking to see my friend's film barely getting any views while the stolen garbage is already in the thousands. I hope the person who stole my friend's work and made that shit dies in a fiery car crash and go straight to hell.
I cannot emphasise how we must not let this shit continue to happen. We're living in a fucking dystopia and unless we do something about it and support those affected by it it's only going to get worse. They're already expanded from stealing people's still art to stealing people's entire films, if we don't stop this nothing we create would ever be safe.
My friend's film:

Note
artshield.io/watermarker
it's not Nightshade but it does confuse the AI and make it think that the image you made is AI, thus excluding it from the data sets.
it runs on browser so there's no downloads involved and it works similarly to Glaze.
please share this!!!
thank you, is good to have options!

Kenshin (14) vs Itachi (11), both beginning their assassin careers. And Kenshin is probably already shorter LMAO
Who do you think would win if it's really just swords? I'd probably go with Kenshin here because he literally has sword in his name and is all about kenjutsu whereas Itachi just kinda... I dunno, was it ever more than brute force?
It took me so many attempts to get Itachi's arm somewhat right. I ended up taking photos of my own arm from every possible angle and used that for reference because somehow, the CSP model's wrist just wouldn't turn that way.

Just saw a post from a disabled person arguing that AI art is a good tool to help disabled artists. and it made me so furious I simply HAVE to say something.
It does not matter if it helps someone if its actively hurting others in the process. Someone using AI art as a disability aid actively hurts other disabled artists like me and many of my friends and mutuals who's art is routinely and unethically being scraped to feed AI's "learning" and is trying to steal from us one of the few avenues we actually have for work.
Art and disabled ppl have existed since basically the beginning of human history and disabled ppl by extension have been finding ways to make art for just as long. AI is definitely an easier solution, but its not the only one. So if you think its necessary it says more about your willingness to make something less hard for yourself, even if it hurts others. Being disabled is hard, I know it is. It can and often does get in the way of me being an artist. But I would rather never create again than use AI to "help" me when the pain is too bad and the energy is too low to make anything myself.
AI art isn't art. you aren't creating anything. You're using keywords to mash stolen images together until something slightly intelligible comes out. It requires none of the time, skill, or care that art takes. You cannot pour your heart and soul into AI art. And any perceived love or attention to detail or love for the craft that's seen in AI art is care stolen from others. It's not yours.
If you like AI art, think disabled ppl need AI art, or think its okay that disabled artists are being exploited and stolen from for other disabled artists to "create" go fuck yourself. I'm tired of having this argument and the fact that some of our own are helping fuel shitty tech bro rhetoric is infuriating.

Anybody who says that we don’t need to be Anti AI can fuck right off.
These soulless corporations don’t value art or creatively, they see everything as “content.”
“Oh, but what about all the good AI can do? It can help with science and medicine.”
Alright, then why the fuck aren’t these companies using it for that? Oh that’s right, because they don’t care about bettering humanity. All they care about is stealing everyone’s work to create AI generated slop that they can market to morons.

I remember a few months ago when everyone was appalled about Tumblr allowing blog content to be submitted for AI, but AT LEAST WE COULD OPT OUT.
Now on Insta (as of May 31st), unless you live in the EU, you can't opt out of it. And trying to find where is such a tedious process. They're planning to enact it in late June, I believe.
All the more reason I gotta start posting more here.
