Interesting little thing, Sorn and Nym Orlith's names can both be found in the "male" section of drow names from Dragon Magazine (Sorn meaning enchanted or spell, Nym meaning skeleton or skull, and possibly Orly-th meaning Guild of Challenges).

Sorn says they fled because male drow are treated like dogs. At first I figured it meant his sister went with him for a genuine care of her brother and twin (and perhaps still is the case) but I wonder if Nym is trans and transitioned after leaving the Underdark but kept her name.

A Shining Light in the Underdark - (Entry 1.)

This is gonna be a series of short stories I’m writing about my favorite (and my main) campaign in Baldur’s Gate 3. Ranging from his life pre all the way through post game events, so there will be spoilers!!! I’m sorry it’s parts of his plot!

It features a transgender (female to male) Drow named Vaelic Kilarn. I’ve already posted a lot about him on my page as little head cannons, shorts, and he’s featured in most of my edits 🤣He is a Dark Urge origin character with a lot of baggage and I will be writing about his experiences with that. So trigger warnings to come will be added as necessary.

I also have my own head cannons about companions in these stories based off of my campaign and the world I’m building in it. So if that isn’t your thing and you’re for Vanilla 100% characters, totally okay but I’m prolly not the silly lil fanfic guy for you 😅 That being said!

Vaelic’s jaw tensed as he heard the creaking of the large oak door. Though uncomfortable, he forced a sweet smile on his lips. Sickly sweet to him, but it’s how his Matron preferred he greeted her. After all, “Such a privileged, young, replaceable Jaluk should be grateful to hold the honors of his Lady’s favorite pet.”

“Ahh.. My Bol Jivvin..” The female Drow addressed Vaelic in a low, nearly growling tone. Though poison dribbled lightly from her words, her voice still retained a calming femininity. To anyone not used to it, they may even find it chilling.

“I am pleased to see that you are finally adjusting to my expectations of you.” Matron Amalica Kilarn approached the young male, who was on his knees with his hands waiting patiently behind his back. He tilted his head up at her, but awaited her to grasp his chin in her fingers and pull his gaze upward before his eyes met hers, as she instructed him so again and again.

She gave him an approving smirk, released his chin, and then tousled his white and black streaked hair. A choice she had made for him, to identify him as the only Jaluk who lived in her personal quarters. Should he be found outside of them, or any of the other Jaluk found in there with him, punishment and removal or return of the guilty party was to take place immediately.

“Rise, pet. You may come draw me a bath, then join me in it, hm?” Amalica lifted her brow playfully, knowing Vaelic knew it was a demand and not a request. But she did love to play her games with him, keep him guessing on if he was really a valued servant of hers, or just another toy in house Kilarn for the Matron to indulge in before she discarded.

The male Drow got off his knees and bowed his head to his Mistress. “Yes, your divinity.” He spoke softly, subserviently. It earned him a giggle from the Matron Mother.

He quickly, yet gracefully guided himself to the bath room to begin prepping the bath.

Just another night… Though soon, Vaelic planned to request freedom. A chance to prove himself as worthy of dwelling the surface as the other, more masculine male Drow that served house Kilarn as their personal couriers to the surface world. They exchanged Underdark native goods for surface goods, and the like. Vaelic longed for his freedom. If he could just earn the trust of his Matron to allow him on one delivery to the surface, he could take his chance to flee and never look back. Being forsaken by his home, by Lolth, it was all worth it just to feel like his body was his own.

Alak’niss Rilynath: FTM noble, Sorcerer/Wizard Arachnomancer and Arch-Mage of Sorcere. Had a dalliance with Gromph Baenre, and assassinated the arch-mage who succeeded him (Pharaun Mizzrym) to assume the title of Archmage at Sorcere, having an advantage in doing so for his female anatomy. Fearfully referred to as the ‘Spider King’, as rumours say he is a ‘Consort of Lolth’, having been ‘kissed by the Spider Queen,’ as the only House Patron to be given the advantage of being blessed with a female form at birth, part of his body also naturally armoured with a spider-like carapace, which spread with his use of magic. He is also feared for his jet black hair, which, in Drow Society, is said to be a bad omen - and a bad omen he was, indeed, for the Rilynath House, as when they sought to eliminate him for the ‘treachery’ of his transition, he picked them off one by one until only he was left.

Some Sengo things

Trans (FtM) and therefore not a favorite among drow. I don't know if he's from Menzoberranzan or a different place where Lolthite drow are in charge but either way he gets harassed often for his gender identity. Bonus points if he's from a relatively powerful house too so now he's also shaming his mother by "choosing to be weak/lesser" or some shit. Attempts on his life are pretty commonplace too I'd say. And sexual harassment/assault. Yep. 90% of our stories have those themes, Sengo's is going to be no different.

Kar'niss' childhood best friend. They were buddies since forever and always had each other's back. Maybe Kar'niss is from a smaller/less powerful house and Sengo's parents (namely mother) kind of helped elevate his status a little.... Until Sengo started arguing about gender that is. Because after that the Auvyrrets' reputation got damaged and shit.

A necromancer. Prefers the company of corpses and ghosts over that of living people (unless it's Kar'niss). Pretty good at casting necromancy spells actually.

Was driven out of wherever it is he came from after Kar'niss failed the Test of Lolth and got turned into a drider. We imagined that part of Kar'niss' test was to kill Sengo but he just couldn't bring himself to do it and therefore failed. Sengo was more than happy to leave everything behind and go with Kar'niss. He helped Kar'niss get used to his new form, helped him hunt, while simultaneously figuring out how to take care of himself now that they were on their own. We like to think that Kar'niss looked after Sengo when it came to scavenging for food and water and also keeping him safe in a general sense. It was hard but the two of them made it work.

Kar'niss falling into the Absolute's clutches seriously concerned Sengo because Sengo remained wary and suspicious of the Absolute cult and also free from its influence. Absolutist!Kar'niss became increasingly more violent and unstable even towards Sengo so Sengo set out to look for help while Kar'niss did Absolute Things™. We like to think that these two are from Mikhail's canon and that Mikhail managed to help break Kar'niss free from the Absolute's influence while also giving Sengo some tips and tricks for how he should treat Kar'niss so such a lapse won't repeat itself in the future.

Kar'niss lives! Maybe the two of them even join Mikhail's camp for a while, just to be safe y'know? Even though nobody trusts them (or more specifically, nobody trusts Kar'niss) Mikhail lets them seek refuge at his camp because it's better than wandering the shadow-cursed lands without protection.

Sengo and Kar'niss were a couple since their teens I'd say. Just two weirdos being weird and off-putting together. Two freaks matching each other's freak.

Sengo is initially very mistrusting of everyone at the camp but he trusts Mikhail and Mikhail helps him open up a little bit over time, especially after Kar'niss stabilizes. I think Sengo would get along with Karlach because he'd be drawn to her friendly and open-minded attitude. Maybe he'd even get along with Wyll, if Wyll won't say anything judgmental about Kar'niss. Gale too, especially if Sengo is the wizard type of necromancer. Astarion and Lae'zel are on his shitlist though and Shadowheart is on thin ice.

I can see Sengo being curious about Gale's cooking and offering to help him cook or at the very least just asking a lot of questions while watching Gale cook from the side. Sengo lived off scavenged rations and barely edible meals for a long time, it's refreshing to finally eat something that's actually good.

Sengo riding Kar'niss' back like a horse whenever he gets too tired from walking.

Sengo might get along with Minthara to a degree just based off the fact that Minthara also rejected both Lolth and the Absolute like Sengo did. Minthara might have a thing or two to say about Kar'niss that Sengo would likely find distasteful but he knows enough about his own kind to expect such comments from Minthara specifically so he isn't TOO offended.

Sengo playing with Scratch and the owlbear cub to experience the feeling of having the pets which he never got to have as a kid.

Sengo reading and singing to Kar'niss to soothe Kar'niss' nerves.👌

Kar'niss will never be allowed into Baldur's Gate for obvious reasons so Sengo parts ways with Mikhail before act 3 but now that the shadow curse has been lifted he feels like it'll be safer for them to hang around the area surrounding Moonrise and maybe even help rebuild/defend some parts. Y'know, as a new beginning.

Speaking of Moonrise, Sengo and Kar'niss fighting Ketheric alongside Mikhail as additional allies like Dame Aylin just does things to my soul okay?

Heads up for Dark Urge spoilers here and there!

1. Tell us about your Tav! Name, class and subclass, race, pronouns. Do you have a headcanon for where they're from? Their family? Are they a Dark Urge? Or did you choose an Origin Character? Was it an easy decision?

The Dark Urge (or Salem, but I just call him Durge most of the time.) He’s a half-drow bard, College of Lore subclass, he/him. (He was originally a half wood elf, but his face type causes seaming problems with high and wood half elves for some reason.) It took me HOURS to settle on a character. Technically this guy is a recycled OC, but I think he fits nicely in the D&D world. I actually have….no idea how old he’d be. He’s at least in his 30s? Maybe? Not sure how well that’d mesh with the Dark Urge’s canon and the timeline of the series.

I’m still cooking up his backstory in my head because there’s a lot to juggle between his canon Dark Urge lore and what I’d like his pre-cult backstory to be. He’s probably from Baldur’s Gate, and doesn’t remember his “parents” well enough to have much of an opinion of them. Before I learned a bit more about the Dark Urge backstory, a headcanoned him as having been a transient with a list of mostly non-supernatural mental problems and no knowledge of how to address them. So he gets chucked into an asylum (do they even have those in Faerun?) or prison, later finds his way out somehow or is recruited by the cult, and makes his way to the Undercity when he realizes what he is. As far as I can tell, there might actually be room in the Dark Urge’s canon for that backstory. They let you have a bit of freedom with your Dark Urge character since they have amnesia, and I’m 200% here for that.

2. Was there something about the character creator that just couldn't capture your Character? Please tell us about their hair, facial hair, tattoos, piercings, disabilities, their trans or intersex body, or anything else you're comfortable sharing.

His original design has a very specific long braided style that the CC didn’t have, but it ended up working out. Maybe he chopped it off? Or maybe Orin did before she started digging around in his head? He also has very faint facial hair on his jawlines, and his mustache wasn’t originally that big at all. I think he would have FTM chest surgery scars and some tattoos related to his life before the main story. This is a quick doodle of how I imagined him looking before I made him in the CC.

9. Do you have a favorite member of the Tiefling Refugees? Is it the same as your Character's?

MATTIS my ragamuffin… I think Salem would agree. He respects that swindling pick-pocket street urchin grind.

14. Do you have another NPC you loved from a faction not mentioned above? What about your Character?

Okay if we’re just talking about Act 1. And I know he’s a shit but...I love Sceleritas Fel. I love his creepy zombie imp (goblin?) design. I love his voice acting. I want to drop kick him but at the same time I felt kind of bad when he got turned into a kabob.

Salem fully hates him though. Understandable.

23. What are your Character's thoughts on the dream visitor?

Oh he really liked her for awhile, although he didn’t entirely trust her. They aren’t on the best of terms right now, but hopefully it’ll blow over. (I’m in Act 3)

Felt like doing some self-indulgent Pride art for some of my characters today. More info + pin closeups below the cut because I feel like rambling.

(These also ended up being a really good excuse to do more queer history research lol)

Gwbdolyb the pescetarian mindflayer archaeologist & her shrimp wife 'Robert'. Robert gets to have a colored dress since lavender has historical queer connotations. [An argument could be made that Gwyb is also trans since her original host body was male, but considering the process of ceremorphosis is all about erasing the host's identity I don't view it as 'counting'.] I've made pin-up art with them before.

Ra-Im Moon / 문라임, aspiring fashion designer (wearing one of her signature designs, the "skuit"). Technically she's an NPC moreso than my own character, but I couldn't have Seungmin without her big sister. The double-moon pin is another bi symbol (+ moon/Moon pun :)).

Seungmin Moon / 문승민, escaped corporate mercenary (her face was replaced with an electronic screen after an explosion). Ra-Im designed her demiromantic hanbok for her. I had a hard time searching for Korean-specific queer symbols, but I noticed multiple people with this flag at the Seoul Pride Festival so I went with that.

'Maddie' Moon, the 1970s Bionic Kid teen AU variant of Seungmin. Some close-ups of her buttons below. Maddie is Korean-American but also spent several years living in Berlin. I never fully figured out out if she's lesbian or bi (part of the reason I was initially looking at the double-moon is because it's preferred in Germany over the double triangles) so I tried to go with period-appropriate symbols that could work for both. The lambda was made an international symbol for gay & lesbian rights in 1974, and the pink color obviously has historical connotations as well. The labrys is often used as a lesbian feminist symbol. I'm admittedly not sure exactly what year the German pin is from but the sentiment is perfect. Wasn't able to dig up any other German/European-specific symbologies (although I did learn that organized queer groups were called friendship leagues / freundschaftverbände).

Tree Shaper, my beautiful mutton-chopped firblog (also nicknamed Branches). Exclusively they/them. I love them a lot.

Len my ghost boy! Len's look is supposed to be a bit anachronistic since he's originally from the 1980s but ghosted around through 2018 before traveling back in time to the 80s again (long story). The most commonly used trans symbol only came around in the 90s, but I did find this variant that was used by the FTM magazine Metamorphosis in the early 80s as well as on the pin below. Their activist friend Krysta would definitely have gotten him the Anita Bryant pin. (It would probably be a little more in-character for Len to have an ace ring instead of the pin, but I didn't make their hands very visible so)

& last but not least, Kraner the half-drow busker (not shown outside on a sunny day). He can normally make his tattoos glow in a variety of colors (good for putting on a performance) but I think he'd enjoy coordinating them specifically to match the pride flag. He's still coming to terms with his asexuality, but he'll get there eventually.
