Saying "plants are alive" and excluding fungi is ridiculous. Fungi are way cooler and way more interconnected than plants. I hope a fungus colonises and consumes you.

Calicium abietinum
Fir pin, black stubble
So like, I need to clarify that the fruting bodies of pin lichens aren't *technically* mushrooms, but also what is the technical definition of a mushroom anyway? ("an enlarged complex fleshy fruiting body of a fungus (as most basidiomycetes) that arises from an underground mycelium and consists typically of a stem bearing a spore-bearing structure") So like, go ahead and call them mushrooms if you want, but just know that at some point some pedant might correct and I would have to give it them on a technicality. But in my heart, when I look at C. abientinum I am screaming "look at the bitty lil baby mushrooms!!!!" This pin lichen has an immersed thallus sunken into old and dead wood and bark, particularly that of hardwood and firs. It produces brown-black, thin-stalked apothecia up to a measly 1 mm in height, covered in a transparent gelatinous sheath and topped with a lens- or bell-shaped cap. It has a chlorococcoid green algal photobiont. C. abietinum can be found in dryer, temperate to boreal-montane habitats in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Book One [Book Two]
Chapter One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six | Seven | Eight | [Nine]
Tumblr media
Jessie came up the bike path, human once again.
“You should’ve waited for me,” they said.
“We know,” Claire said.
“You ran in here alone. D’you know what could’ve happened?”
“We could’ve died,” Laura said, then - “like THAT GUY WHOSE JAW YOU RIPPED OFF.”
Jessie laughed. “It’ll grow back.”
“It…it grows back? A werewolf can regrow a jaw?”
“Werewolves can go through a lot and end up fine in the end.” Jessie paused. “Don’t know if I should’ve told ya that.” They sighed. “I’ll take you all home in a moment. Gotta figure out where we’re taking them.”
When Jessie was out of sight, everyone took stock of each other. Laura thought they’d all be scared again. She should be. She couldn’t tell if she was still shaking or not. But…
Summer laughed. Sat down on the edge of the ditch. Laura found herself laughing, too, though nothing was funny. She joined Summer on the edge. So did Alice, Emily, and Claire.
-------------------------------------------------
Laura was finally home. Claire and Summer were back home, she was taking Emily and Alice back next, they left the two guys at a hospital, and Melissa…
No one knew where she’d be going. Not even her. She was still asleep.
Her parents still weren’t home. Gef had woken up, but he scurried over into her room and curled up on the table without a word. Heated up a slice of pizza she found in the fridge (guess she missed pizza night). Carried the plate to her room. And…
The door opened. “Laura? You there?”
“...yeah.”
Her dad walked in. “Where…where were you?””
“Werewolf thing.”
“You couldn’t tell me?”
“Sorry. Lost track of time.”
“I know I’m not a werewolf, but you can tell me what you get up to with your pack,” he said.
“Sorry,” Laura mumbled. “Do you still want to hear what it’s like?”
“You said it hurt. That’s all.”
“It’s not like it only hurts and there’s nothing good,” Laura said. “There’s two rabbits asleep out there. No, one of them’s asleep, the other’s gnawing on some grass.”
“You saw them?”
“I smelled them. Heard them.”
“Through the glass?”
“I could probably smell even more if the window was more open.” Laura sighed. “It’s kind of hell, ‘cause I couldn’t focus on anything anyway, and now I have a million more things to not focus on. But also, like, there’s so much more I can only see, hear, smell now.”
“Mixed bag then, huh?”
“Huh. Yeah.”
“You can’t…you can’t hear everything, right?”
“No. Not anymore.” Laura closed the door, fell on her bed.
“Thanks,” Laura muttered to the sleeping mongoose. Nothing. “Thanks, Geffrey.” He rasped out a tiny noise half between a hiss and a snore. “Good night.”
-------------------------------------------------
Jessie let Alice out a few blocks from her house. She was more scared walking up to her own home than she’d been bluffing that Horde boy, and she could barely control her nerves as she tried to get in her own window.
Nobody was waiting for her, with arms crossed or with a gun primed on the “intruder”. She ducked out into the living room. Dark.
Nobody seemed to have noticed her absence at all.
-------------------------------------------------
Devin found the beast along a highway, on the side of the road. Lying wounded. Lying in the dirt. Nursing the scratches from the night - healing slowly, naturally, as his body couldn’t spare the resources to speed up the process - and from his ongoing pain.
“Get up.” Devin demanded. His new jaw didn’t feel right. Damn it.
The wolf growled wearily in response.
Devin kicked the beast again. “Get up!”
-------------------------------------------------
“What’s this cereal?” Laura looked over the white box with a red-brown… “Is this a…”
“It’s Frute Brute,” Chris said. “Heath and I went shopping for new food for you and, well, it’s one of the Halloween cereals. I thought...that’s not insensitive, is it?”
“What’s insensitive?” Heather asked, walking through the kitchen.
“Nothin’.” Chris leaned in. “Are we gonna tell her?”
“Jessie’s coming by later.”
“Ah.”
-------------------------------------------------
The van stopped at the side of the highway. White. Unmarked. The door slid open. Inside were several people in jumpsuits like Devin’s: most with black stripes, and one in gold, and it was -
“Beta Devin,” he sneered.
“Spare your jokes,” Devin sneered back.
“Where’s the target?”
“Gone.”
“The prey?”
“Gone.”
“Mike.”
“Beta Michael,” he reminded.
“Beta Michael, are you going to allow your Alpha’s lieutenant and your Alpha’s chosen into the van?”
“Find your own space,” he said, letting them inside.
-------------------------------------------------
The red-haired Southern person’s face turned into a muzzle. Her hands became paws. Their teeth became fangs. Heather watched it all silently.
“So, uh, what’re you thinking, Heath?”
“That my daughter is...is that?”
“She is. But it isn’t so bad -”
“It explains so much.”
“Huh?”
“The red stains in the shower. The meat. Staying at the hospital all night...oh, did I see her? When I saw the coyote in Elkhorn, was that her?”
“Yes...but really, it’s not so bad…”
“I called the cops on my daughter. I can’t believe…”
“She’s with friends. She only hurts deer.”
“I’m not worried about her friends. What worries me is that she’s talking to herself.”
“Oh, that’s just Gef.”
“Who’s Jeff? A friend? Boyfriend? Girlfriend?” She paused. “Non-binary friend?”
“A mongoose. He can talk. He’s kinda helping her.”
“...can I meet the mongoose?”
“Later, yeah. He’s away now.”
“Away?”
“He’s checking in with the chupacabra.”
“...alright, could we start from the top?”
“Sure.”
As Jessie watched Chris explain everything at length, again, she wondered if she should leave. Or transform back. Paralyzed by indecision, she just sat there, occasionally barking. She hoped it helped.
-------------------------------------------------
Manuel waited for Laura at the entrance to school; she was driven there by her father, and she waved to him as she stepped out and, noticing him, hurried over, likely noticing some worriedness on Manuel’s face, though he couldn’t really tell…
“We were fine,” Laura said. “There was this other…y’know, there. But Jessie chased him and the dog off.”
“I wish I could have been there,” Manuel said.
“It was really scary.”
“I still wish I could have been there,” Manuel repeated.
“I wish you were there, too,” Laura said. “Next time something weird happens, I’m bringing you with me.”
“Thank you. Do you think something weird will happen soon? Um. Something weird besides werewolves, and Gef…”
“The chupacabra is real.”
“The…the chupacabra? Dog chupacabra or Species chupacabra?”
“Species chupacabra. But she has hair too?”
“She?”
“Her name is Eliza. I met her yesterday.”
“You met the chupacabra.”
“I’m seeing her in a couple days. I have to bring back Gef and check on Melissa, and -”
“Melissa is the girl…”
“Melissa is the girl who has to cover her eyes or something bad happens. I met her in Chicago. That’s where I saw the evil gargoyle that attacks people if music isn’t playing.”
“The evil gargoyle.”
“Yeah.”
“That attacks people if music isn’t playing.”
“Yeah,” Laura confirmed, and they walked inside together.

Which corporate mascots do you tend to like? I kind of guessed the Kool-aid man, but are there any others that stand out?
Yes, besides KAM, my favorites tend to be cereal mascots. And we're getting close to my favorite season:
Tumblr media
I recently gave up these processed sugar cereals (and lost a lot of weight in the process; clearly your body doesn't like them) but I guess I will have to sneak in a box of Monster Mash if only for Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy. My '90s commercialized upbringing taught me these thin corporate masks are my friends!
Generic mascots for generic brands also fulfill my basic needs for kitsch. Like this anthropomorphized, fiberglass cone of french fries:

Lichenomphalia umbellifera
OK, OK, I know what you’re thinking. Lichenaday, I may not know lichens all that well, but I know what the fuck a mushroom is, and that’s a mushroom. And hey we are both right! This is indeed L. umbrellifera -- a lichenized agaric fungus! The thallus of this friend is made up of inconspicuous, granular lobes that contain an algal photobiont within the mycelium! But of course, this species is noteworthy for those mushroomy fruiting bodies which produce sexual spores like any toadstool does. It is important to not that when you are looking at any mushroom, you are actually looking at the fruiting body of a network of fungal hyphea that  make up the main body of the fungus. Kinda like looking at an apple and remembering that is came from a tree. But instead of this fruting body connecting to a fungal network, it connects to the symbiotic network that defines a lichen! Super cool, right? L. umbrellifera can be found growing on acidic soil and rotting wood in cool, damp climates. And of course, it derives its species name from the fact that it looks like little fairy umbrellas. So precious!

Floril, Wood Flower Pokémon
Dex: it has a hard shell body made of a vibrant red wood, it’l almost impossible to pierce tough it’s armor, however on top of its head a beautiful and delicate flower blooms
it produces a sweet aroma from it’s flower to attract others of it’s kind and some Bug type pokémon, for some reason it’s aroma makes breeding easier.
it evoled from Liril starting level 21 and into Frutil ater beeing breed with another Floril.
Liril = Little
Floril = Flor(pt. Flower) Pau Brasil(Brazil Wood), also Floriu means Bloomed in portuguese
Frutil = Fruta(Frute)  Pau Brasil(Brazil Wood)
it has the abiity Hard Trunk (works like Solid Rock and Prism Armor)

Hide and Seek
Author : @serahne For : @frutee Pairing/Characters : No pairing. Light, Sayu, Sachiko. Rating/Warning : None. Gen. Prompt : Anything with Light Yagami as a kid / Yagami family bonding Note : It’s written for the second time ! I honestly can’t say if this time is better than the first time I wrote this ( I feel like Light came out differently this time, not sure why ). Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy it no matter what !
“Come on, Light ! Come on ! Let’s play now !”
Sayu was jumping all around her brother’s room, impatient for entertainment. She was done with her lecture, it was still too early for the TV program she was into, and she had very little interest in books. Her last possible source of fun was her brother. Hide-and-seek with her brother, more precisely.
“I can’t Sayu” Light sighed. “I have homeworks. Next year is middle school for me, that’s important.”
He wasn’t angry at her, she was still small : she was six, and he was ten, and he had to be the adult one between them.
“Come on Light ! Not for long, I promise ! I’ll make it easy. When you’re bored, you can scream and I’ll come out. Please, I promise I won’t ask you anything else ever again !” The little girl insisted.
Light looked at his sister’s begging eyes, then at the clock. It was not yet 6 PM. He had a little time, anyway, so he could be nice to her, right ? Sayu was really good at Hide-and-Seek, and thus, she loved it. She was so tiny that she could hide under the furniture, or behind the television. She managed to roll her body in a small ball and hide in a closet, behind the clothes. Once, their mother had found her in the oven, when she was about to clean it up.
“Alright” Light gave in. “I’m counting until a hundred…”
“A million !” Sayu said.
“A million” Light lied with a roll of his eyes. “I’m counting and then I’ll come to look for you. If I can’t find you after a while, we stop the game, promise ?”
“Promise !” Sayu beamed. “Now close your eyes !”
Light saw her disappear in the hallway and turned back his attention on his homework. He had a few more minutes to spend here, right ?
*
He was interrupted by his mother knocking on his door. He liked that, she was the only one who waited for his permission to come in : her father never came to see him in his bedroom, and Sayu didn’t bother knocking ( Light graciously forgave her, she was still a baby, and he could technically do the same and enter her room whenever he wanted, he just never wanted to ).
“Hey, darling, did you see Sayu ? I’m looking for her.”
The wrinkles around her eyes showed that she was a little worried. Light threw a glance at the clock : almost twenty past six. He bit his lips, remembering the game he was supposed to play with his sister.
“Don’t worry” he said with his best smile ( the #3, the one for the parents and the teachers when they started asking questions ) “We are playing Hide-and-Seek, and she asked me to count until one million. I’m going to look for her, now.”
His mother relaxed.
“Really ? That’s nice of you to play with her. She wanted to go at Naoko’s, but she is a little sick and her mother doesn’t want her cold to spread.” She smiled. “I’m lucky to have my big boy at home to be so responsible.”
Light nodded seriously, while racking his brain wondering where Sayu could be hidden. As soon as her mother went down the stairs, he started his research.
She wasn’t in their parents’ room ( it was technically a forbidden territory but Sayu hid there all the time, cheating or not ), or in her room ( where he only found a pile of pink unicorn-shaped plushies, Sayu was really such girl ). She wasn’t in the bathroom : not behind the curtain shower, not under the sink either. He did his best to keep his stance calm and composed while sneaking around the living-room, for his mother was here, reading a magazine.
After twenty minutes, he sighed and decided to cut down the chase.
“Sayu ! You can come out ! You won !”
He waited a few seconds, but nothing.
“Sayu !” He tried again, louder this time. “I give up ! You need to come out, now !”
Nothing, again. Somewhere in Light’s stomach, anxiety started to show his ugly teeth.
“Light ?” His mother asked, the wrinkles around her eyes back. “What’s wrong ?”
Light moved his body’s weight from one foot to another, his eyes scanning the room for something, anything to catch her attention. But that didn’t make sense : Sayu could be stubborn, but she had promised to listen to him when he would want to give up.
“I can’t find her” He admitted, frustration obvious in his voice. “I don’t know where she is hidden, and she doesn’t answer.”
Something flashed for one second in his mother’s eyes, but it was gone as soon as it had appeared, and she lowered herself to be at his height, offering Light a comforting smile.
“It’s alright, we are going to find her together. I’m sure we can make a great team. You’re with me ?”
Light nodded. His mom was very good at finding the things they lost around the house on a regular basis, after all, and she knew this house even better than Light did. They could find Sayu, wherever she was.
They didn’t get any luckier with her on the search team, though. They double-checked, triple-checked everywhere, while calling her name again and again. In the bathroom, the rooms, the little balconies on Light’s and the parents’ rooms. They opened all the drawers in the kitchen, and yes, they checked the oven too, even if after this incident a few months before, she had promised to not crawl into it again.
After twenty more minutes, Light could tell that his mother wasn’t as calm as she pretended to be.
“Maybe she is at Naoko’s ?” He tried. “She was bored, and she wanted to see her friend so it’s possible, right ?”
His mom didn’t seem convinced.
“Sayu isn’t allowed to go out alone, so I don’t think that’s the case. Also Naoko’s brother would have definitely call me if she was there.”
She still called Naoko. Sayu wasn’t there. Light and his mother sat on at the kitchen’s table in silence for a few seconds.
“I don’t understand” whispered his mother. “You were playing a game. Why would she disappear like that ? I hope she is still in the house but… It’s very cold outside, if she is out there, I don’t want to wait for your father to come home.”
“Maybe we should call dad ?” Light suggested.
He didn’t know if his dad would be angry at him, but he knew he could find a solution. He was a policeman after all, finding missing people were what they did all the time.
“Maybe, yes” his mother replied. “Though he would have cut his private phone if he is at the precinct and…” She stopped mid-sentence, thinking things through. “I’m going to see him now. I hope he isn’t in the middle of anything too serious but even if that’s the case…”
She didn’t end her sentence, but Light could understand perfectly. Sayu was more important.
“Please, Light, stay in there and wait for me and your dad to come back, do you hear me ? You don’t go outside, for any reason.”
“I understand” Light replied with a small voice.
His mother kissed him on the cheek - she never did that these days.
Once his mother was gone, Light was restless. He walked around the living room, feeling like he was going to explode or suffocate. Was it his fault ? What if Sayu was really outside ? There was a lot of wind out there, that felt like knives stabbing your skin, and the night had fallen already. If Sayu was outside, she was probably very scared.
He was scared. He had read somewhere on the internet that people could die of cold very quickly, and Sayu’s coat was still hanging where she had left it - on a chair.
Trying to calm himself down, he climbed up the stairs and went into his parents’ room. It was quiet and peaceful, and absolutely terrible for Light’s nerves. One day, his dad told him that you had to wait for a few days before you could report someone’s disappearance. He felts silly to panic after two hours but… he couldn’t help it.
He opened the door toward the balcony. From here, he could see the street before than from his own. The moon was already high in the sky, and its light managed to pierce through the the neighborhood’s cloudy atmosphere. One of these rays of light was falling on the balcony Light was in, a little on his left.
And well, there was no reason for him to follow the moonlight, really. But when he saw the box the light was throwing itself on, a curious idea started gnawing on his brain. It was an old box, really. From his birthday, if he remembered correctly - he did - when he had received his new computer. He briefly wondered why the parents hadn’t throw it away by now : maybe they had just forgotten it was here.
Slowly, he moved toward the box and opened it.
Inside, a tiny, freezing figure was sleeping.
Light’s breath caught up in his throat. Without a word, he put a hand on her sister - she was so cold, it wasn’t normal for someone to be that cold, right ? - but she didn’t move an inch. She didn’t move any more when he shook his shoulder.
“Sayu…” he mumbled “Wake up… you can’t sleep here, it’s too cold.”
Desperate, he gathered Sayu into his arms - she didn’t wake up either, which was worrying since he didn’t have the strength to carry her with delicacy - and brought her back inside, doing his best to envelop her in his body, thinking that, maybe, he could give her some of her warmth.
He was shaking and nervously on edge, but he put her on their parents’ bed and wrapped the cover around her, before blowing warm air on his freezing, sleeping face. Their parents wouldn’t be back for another thirty minutes, and he didn’t know what to do ? Was it serious ? Did Sayu need to go to the hospital ?
He liked to play the adult, but he wasn’t one. Not yet.
“I’m sorry” he mumbled against Sayu’s hair while he was keeping her in a loose hug. “I’m sorry, I should have looked for you sooner, I’m sorry.”
Suddenly, like for a miracle, she stirred a little, and her eyes opened, confused and heavy.
“Light ?” she whispered, and her voice was so tired. “Oh… you found me.”
Light tightened his grip around her.
“Yes, of course I did” he said, a half-laugh half-sob escaping from his lips. “I always do. Who do you think I am, after all ?”
Sayu didn’t answer. She has fallen asleep once again.
