i threatened that if even one person showed interest in a lore dump for all the stuff i didn't get to put in my sonadow vampire au i would make a post for it and SOMEBODY DID. so now that i have that excuse to argue it's not entirely self indulgent here comes the lore!!! under the cut bc i have no clue how long this will be

i'm the kind of person who will pick apart how fantasy creatures work in their respective media so it should come as no surprise that i gave a lot of thought about the way vampires work in this universe. it's vaguely inspired by various vampire media, included but not limited to dracula, buffy, and the vampire diaries, but also general vampire mythos. so without further ado:

i envisioned turning somebody into a vampire to be kind of a long process like in dracula. specifically the idea i had was to slowly drain a person of blood and then replace it with vampire blood. now is this how blood works? of course not. but who give a shit. that's why it's hard to do when you're a new vampire and can't control your hunger, because you have to eventually. stop. or you'll just kill the person you're trying to turn

speaking of the hunger that's pretty basic vampire stuff. new vampires have an insatiable hunger for blood that gets easier to control the older you get

that being said in my universe vampires can eat things besides blood as well. vampires can survive on blood alone, but doing that will make them seem more... vampire-ish. corpse-like. eating normal food is what allows hair and nails to keep growing, weight to be gained, muscles to be developed, etc. if you give a vampire who only drinks blood a haircut that shit isn't growing back unless they eat a fucking vegetable.

a lack of blood doesn't kill vampires, but it does make them go into a sort of... state of hibernation, i guess? they'll move slower and get weaker until they eventually just sort of curl up, lie down, and stop moving until somebody shoves some blood into them

speaking of killing them. here's how to kill this universe's vampires: stake to the heart, removing the heart entirely, burning them to ash

bc i'm a horror girlie at heart, here's one notable way to Not kill a vampire: cutting off their head. it'll grow back. but! none of the existing neural pathways will so they'll have complete and total amnesia. no language no memories no nothing. all of that will have to be retaught which means that while the body has survived, the person is dead. pretty neat i think <3

also vampires aren't necessarily that much stronger than regular people. it's more of a case of them being very resilient? like i said in the fic you can tear a vampire's throat out and they'd recover, so physical injury from strain is no problem. like how the average person could lift a car, it'd just leave your muscles all torn to shit and your joints fucked. but vampires don't have to worry about that, and that's why they're strong

i talked about vampire weaknesses and how you grow out of them in the fic a little but i have more thoughts about how those weaknesses present and how long it takes to grow out of them. garlic isn't so severe, it's like poisons for small animals for humans; hurts, certainly not good for you, but you're most likely to just puke it out. this is the one you grow out of first (after about a decade), after which it's just kind of like a mild food intolerance. running water starts out REALLY bad, where even just being near it is physically painful (so day-old vampires can't even cross a bridge), but after the first week or so it's only bad if you're in it. and then it's kind of like acid! it slowly gets less bad and after a couple of decades (depending on the vampire but somewhere between 50 and 100 years) it feels like water that's uncomfortably hot. this btw is the in universe reason for why sonic can't swim. he can it just hurts <3 the sun is predictable i think (sets you on fire) and takes the longest to grow out of (more than a century). touching silver is also kind of like touching acid, and will eventually fade to just being mildly uncomfortable (i envision something like the reaction you have to nickel if you're allergic to it)

the need to be invited in thing i included mostly for plot reasons but i have always thought that was kind of fun just because there's a lot to play with! stuff like what counts as an invitation (is opening the door and motioning with your hand enough?) and who can invite you in (does it need to be the owner of the house? how does that work when you're renting?) so obviously i have thoughts about it. long story short, it's about intention. anything counts as an invitation so long as the person inviting intends it to be one, and you can invite somebody in if you consider that place to be your home. has the fun little twist that some homes can be entered without permission because the person living there doesn't consider it to be their home, and sometimes a vampire will slam into a boundary around a public space because somebody does consider it their home

as for other typical vampire stuff. as funny as the rice thing is, it just seems so random, so that's not a thing in this universe. but i like to think that it's still a myth because of one vampire who either had ocd or just wanted to fuck with somebody lol

there might be more i'm forgetting but off the top of my head i can't think of it, so i'm moving on to the Backstory i came up with:

sonic's family are farmers. typically the mom would sell whatever crops and stock they didn't need for themselves at the market in town, but the pregnancy with sonic was difficult, so she was stuck at home and the dad went instead. that's where he caught the eye of a vampire going through... let's call it a bit of a midlife crisis! she wanted a husband and didn't want to consider if the man she chose to be her husband was available or even amenable to that. so she turned him and he ran off back home to go abuse his wife and children

i mentioned this in a comment but i haven't actually given the kids too much thought. it'd be funny if they were all variations of sonic from different media and universes (hence why i dropped scourge and surge in there) but i don't actually know if there are enough to assign one to all 7 siblings. have some vague thoughts about what sonic's mom and his oldest sister (who is the oldest child, period) are like, but i didn't bother to make fully fleshed out characters (or even give them a name. naming things is hard!)

after sonic got turned he ran away from the farm (bc he didn't want to stay where all his trauma was. not that he knows that was the reason. obviously that's also not how it works because the trauma is in you and not a place lol) and roamed around. and wherever he saw people abusing power (especially abusive dads) he killed them. but after about 3 centuries of that he got really jaded and switched into an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mindset. killed a lord or some shit, took over a castle, and made his own little kingdom

this is why shadow had no idea how old he was. the book (btw. the title is a sims 4 reference. sorry) didn't talk about him until he appeared on the scene in that way, about 500 years ago

what finally got him to change his ways again was befriending a little girl (who called him mister needlemouse. thanks idw 31 <3) who made him believe in the inherent goodness of people again. then he spent some time wracked by guilt and trying to do good. the catalyst for becoming sonic was finding tails and deciding to take care of him. and the rest is history

ok this got long as fuuuuucckkkkk so i'm glad i put it under the read more. with all this being said of course you can read the fics with this knowledge in mind but it must be said i have a degree in literature and am a firm believer in death of the author, so if you want to ignore this completely when you read the text and have different thoughts about it that's entirely your prerogative. peace & love <3

i've been thinking. the cannibalism simply isn't that bad. like, yes it's traumatizing and it could be that they're afraid of being judged over that but it's understandable. that irl sports team who had to eat people to survive exists in this universe so they might, especially now that they're semi-functioning adults, realize that nothing bad will happen if they admit to eating people.

so here's my theory about what they did that's so bad AND who was in the spike trap in ep1: it's other people. random other people. eating jackie, who was already dead, is one thing. even choosing girls from amongst yourselves to eat is understandable and has, in fact, happened for years in similar situations (see the custom of the sea). but finding people who could rescue you? who are hiking in the wilderness and presumably know the way out? finding safety and choosing to stay in the wild and hunt and eat those people instead? THAT is horrifying. THAT is worth hiding.
