I have finally finished 2.4 and oh my GOD watching Dan Heng be so protective of his friends nearly killed me, MY HEART.

Scarecrow Leg Observations/Headcanons

aka I thought about it too much and now it's everyone else's problem.

(important note: I am not in the medical field and I learned/looked up a lot of this with the help of Dr. Google)

The leg brace seems like a simple detail which can be overlooked in the larger design. On the surface, it's pretty straight forward: leg got damaged and now needs an orthopedic brace to function. This in and of itself is interesting since the artist undoubtedly referenced actual braces, specifically old ones, to fit Scarecrow's aesthetic:

This is a running theme with him; he seems to favor old, antique items and will repair things (like the use of duct tape or zigzag stitching for tears on his costume) before replacing them, which fits an image of someone coming from a background of poverty. Not entirely important to the conversation, just an interesting aside.

There is official material which states his leg is "permanently broken", which is probably the easiest, most succinct way to state this issue, but it's not entirely an accurate way to put it. If a leg is considered broken beyond repair, it's likely to be amputated. Bones which don't heal correctly the first time can be broken again and realigned to heal properly, often through surgery with the use of pins, rods, plates, and/or screws. However, "permanently broken" could also be implying he has suffered irreparable nerve damage which affects the use of the leg (more on that in a moment). One possibility: The bones in Scarecrow's leg do not heal properly due to the severity of his fractures likely needing surgery. Unable to access such resources after his run-in with Croc, this results in a malunion. In his case, the misalignment could be subtle as there is no obvious bend or twist in his leg, but still causes problems which requires use of a brace.

Another possibility: Perhaps he is lucky and his leg does heal well. Maybe there's no malunion at all. Unfortunately, whether the bones mend together well or not, evidence strongly implies that it was broken seriously enough that it damaged his peroneal nerve, leading to muscle weakness and foot drop, which necessitates the use of the brace to function.

If you look closely, you can see there is additional support around Scarecrow's ankle that would otherwise prevent rotation of that joint. You can see this in the game when he circles Batman on the airship:

When he takes a step with his good leg, the foot remains more parallel to the floor. Compare that to the foot in the brace, where the toes point upward with each stride due to being in a fixed position. I feel this is a strong indication of him having lasting damage here (such as foot drop) and part of why the leg brace is vital to his mobility (and undoubtedly one of many reasons why he's so furious at Batman).

Something like this often has trickle down effects. Having to compensate for a weaker limb can throw the body off balance, especially if it's a leg. This can create joint and back pain outside of (or in addition to) the issues related to the initial trauma. Combined with the other things he has had to deal with, there is something to be said of Scarecrow's tenacity. He is very driven and ambitious, even if it's the pure, seething drive for vengeance which causes him to persevere. It's a quality one can admire. :)

True duality in solangelo

I've been thinking about how all of us have misinterpreted Will's character, because he always portrays himself as a sweet boy, someone who always sees the positive side of things and always takes care of everyone around him.and in fact he is but, on the other hand he is a boy with trauma from losing half of his cabin, and becoming the older brother and being in charge of everyone, he always looks for the best for everyone, but I think he is very objective about it, even more than Nico Although Nico always shows himself as a "bad" person even from his own perspective, he is a very sweet and respectful boy, this is seen in his relationship with Hestia, Hazel, even with Percy and the 7 because he always seeks to help them. them and the camps even when they hesitated to save him from the jar. In many scenes you can see how Will is the one who makes the "selfish" and more objective decisions because he is a leader, for example in TOA when his brothers are kidnapped, he decides to stay because it is what he should do in that moment Also in tsats when this character (I don't remember his name, sorry) who is looking for Dionysus in Tartarus is intervening in the search for Bob, Will DECIDES to give him false instructions to get him out of the way even though this will most likely kill him, this will kill him. He does it because he has a clear mission there and seeks to survive, it is Nico who thinks about it and finally asks his dad to help him.I think there are many other scenes where you can see this, but in general I think that this duality for which so many people love Solagelo exists but we have misinterpreted it, one thing is the aesthetics of the characters but many do not take into account the true their personality.

Not a very high sex drive. If he’s not in the mood, he’ll get his partner to get off without taking his clothes off and will be offended if you tell him it’s not necessary. His sex drive probably changes based on the stress of his work life, so it would be situational.

He doesn’t sleep much as it is, even with how exhausted he is. The only exception is if he’s back home from a long deployment, but 99% of the time he’ll watch his S/O sleep afterward (a mix of protective instinct and insomnia).

Section leader during marching season, team captain during winter season

Takes it VERY seriously

Is the reason they have twelve hours of practice a week, but also the reason they score very high

Everyone hates him the second conditioning comes around, constantly yelling at the team (Sirius) to try harder while they’re doing suicides and across the floors at seven in the morning

Rifle prodigy (he cannot stfu about showing off how many rotations he can do)

The overzealous upperclassman that scares off incoming freshmen

Always the one lending money at competitions for food. Also has first aid stuff, electric tape, hand warmers, and just about anything else the team could be in need of packed

Mary:

TECHNICALLY co-captain

Her and James are constantly bickering over whether her position is official (“That’s Mary, our FLAG SERGEANT” “WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN MEAN”)

She’s much more involved in flag, doesn’t like weapon as much

A good teacher, but brutally honest to anyone she sees as not meeting expectations

Resident playlist-maker, and has dominion over the speaker in the back of the bus

Is constantly critiquing the show design and advocating for aesthetic cohesion (“the rifles would look so much better if the bolts were taped blue, just saying”)

Sirius:

Is good at weapon, more so sabre

Doesn’t like flag as much, but always gets stuck on solos on it because he’s talented

Manages to miss his drill dot EVERY FUCKING TIME by just a little bit and it sends James into rage

Never really knows the counts, but always in time

Manages to look good even in the shittiest of costumes

Trauma dumps and tells wildass stories in the back of the bus on the way back from late night comps

Constant guard terminology sexual innuendo (“Remus, I need you to strip- your silk, Remus, mind out of the gutter 🙄”)

Remus:

He doesn’t know how he got here

Meaning he got dragged into it by Sirius and James

(Mostly James)

Is basically being held hostage because of his skill- that being that he’s a lot stronger than he looks, so he’s good at rifle when he actually tries

Always has some dusty ass beat up novel in his competition duffle (me)

Late to practice or gone often because he has so many other academic commitments lmao

Always covered in bruises from getting whacked by equipment

Competitive only when it comes to Sirius. (Sirius can do a one handed forty five?? Remus can do a DOUBLE one handed forty five)

Lily:

Marching band historian during fall season

Runs the guard’s social media pages

Organizes all team parties

A STICKLER for team traditions, and makes sure they’re continued on each year

Pretty well-rounded, but prefers flag

Like Remus, only truly competitive and spiteful when it comes to James

All the freshmen love her because she’s a good teacher, and she has a special talent of talking just about anyone into auditioning

Always mad about the state of disarray in the guard room

Peter:

Like Remus, isn’t sure how he ended up here

Isn’t really that great at anything, but he tries real hard

Plays trumpet or smth during marching season lmao

And somehow ended up in guard by peer pressure and a crippling fear of being left out

Marlene:

Weapon NERD

And honestly all around guard nerd

Is almost as enthusiastic as James

She even did baton for a short period of time for fun

Is one of those people who can just whip rifle around in that effortless way (you know the type of person I’m talking about)

Constantly coming to James with feedback about choreography, and they’re always either getting along very well or at odds

Definitely on her way to DCI

Resident makeup helper (she can do a mean cat eye, even on a highway in a school bus)

Maybe at some point I’ll do the skittles or other various characters lol but for now I’m imagining just the in-universe Gryffindors/marauders as one team haha

Steve delicately traces his fingertips along the lines of Eddie’s tattoo.

It’s a lazy Sunday where neither of them has anywhere to be. They’ve dozed through most of the morning, cat naps interrupted by gentle touches that never seem to escalate. It’s easy to rest in the cozy space they’ve created together, warm and held and cocooned together in Steve’s bed.

With his head pillowed on Eddie’s shoulder, Steve can’t help but get distracted by the ink decorating his body. He’s never been a particular fan of tattoos, but they suit Eddie– dark on his pale skin, macabre but artistic, spindly lines and patchy shading speaking to their amateur application but still making a statement. There’s just one that Steve hasn’t grown fond of.

The cluster of bats on Eddie’s forearm is no less aesthetically pleasing than any of his other tattoos, but Steve finds he can’t look at it for long. One bat might have been okay, even a couple. But six? Six is far too many. Six suggests even more bats not far behind, swirling in a screeching cloud, swooping in to attack, to bite, swarming Eddie while Steve screams his throat raw– 

“You okay?” Eddie murmurs. Half-asleep, his fingers absently rake through Steve’s hair. His other arm rests with his palm on his chest, putting his forearm neatly within Steve’s line of sight. He can’t help but touch even though the bats repulse him.

“How can you stand to look at them?” Steve asks after a moment.

Eddie blinks his eyes open in concern. He frowns, processing the question now that he’s fully awake. “The bats?”

“Yeah.” Even though it’s just the two of them and Steve knows Eddie would never make fun of him for this, his voice is still small and embarrassed. 

“I, um.” Eddie adjusts his position, shifting down so he and Steve are face to face. “I couldn’t, at first. I would wake up from a nightmare and I would see it and…” He shakes his head. “It was like I couldn’t escape them. I was already stuck with the scars they gave me, so the tattoo was just one more reminder of what happened.”

Steve’s voice is still a little croaky from sleep when he asks, “But they don’t bother you now?”

“Not really. The scars do, sometimes, when they itch or get sore, but the tattoo has been healed for ages. Since I don’t feel it, I don’t notice it as much, and it feels more like a part of me. Like it was supposed to be here, you know?” Eddie settles a hand on Steve’s hip. “I think it means something different now, after everything. I’m here, and the demobats aren’t. So I guess it kind of became a sign that I survived. I won.” 

It shifts Steve’s world on its axis, hearing that. They did win. The demobats disappeared when they defeated Vecna. But more importantly, Eddie is here in bed with him right now instead of rotting away in Hawkins’ cemetery. Steve is here with the man he loves instead of laying dead on the dry lakebed in the Upside Down. If Steve thinks of Eddie’s tattoo as a symbol of that success, rather than as a threat, those six bats don’t seem so sinister. 

He doesn’t say anything remotely as coherent as that, just a thoughtful, “Oh.”

“Yeah. Takes some practice to switch your perspective like that, but I think it’s worth it to be able to look at my own arm without having a panic attack,” Eddie says lightly, though Steve hears the truth beneath those words. 

He cranes his neck to kiss Eddie in a sleepy, uncoordinated collision of lips. “You’re incredible,” he tells him, mostly to watch the blush that stains his cheeks.

“You’re not bad yourself,” Eddie murmurs. He pauses for a moment before he decides, “I think our mutual awesomeness deserves some pancakes for breakfast, hm?” and vaults out of bed to grab his boxers off the bedroom floor on his way to the kitchen.

“As long as you’re cooking them, sure,” Steve agrees easily, already stretching in preparation to get out of bed. 

Eddie’s laugh echoes back to Steve from down the hallway. Such a simple pleasure he almost didn’t get to experience.

Maybe Steve will get a bat tattoo of his own one day.
