With Warning Part 5: Captain Lahela & a Serving of Common Sense
Book: Open Heart (Book 2 Timeline) Characters: Tobias Carrick & Casey, Bryce Lahela Rating: Teen Words: 1,800 Series Summary: Found here it changes a little here - both the warnings, and in this part, who it's being delivered to. Chapter Summary: Casey's just returned from her holiday getaway with Tobias, and she's happy to have the apartment to herself... so of course Bryce shows up! An animated conversation with her friend, gives her food for thought. A/N: I'm going in a little different direction... this was supposed to be all about the friends warning Tobias to stay away from Casey - and it started that way - but now, the warnings are changing.
The timing of this story is just after parts two, three, and four of Christmas Through Your Eyes and the Epilogue of that series takes place after this fic. (The chronological list of fics in the "From Here to There" part of their journey. 😊)
With Warning Masterlist Tobias x Casey Masterlist || My Full Masterlist
The alarm on Casey’s phone blared for the ninth, or maybe it was the tenth time... but it had done the trick. After rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she stumbled to the bathroom with a delirious smile... she hadn’t been dreaming after all. The Christmas trip with Tobias really happened, and as she splashed cold water onto her face, she realized that for the first time since the attack, she had gone for days simply being... happy.
Her friends were already at work, and she relished being home alone. She adored her roommates, but she knew what awaited her. They would have questions. They’d want to see the photos still tucked away in her phone. And she wasn’t naïve; she knew she’d have to face them when they returned home later, but right now, she needed time to process it all herself.
Returning to her room with a piping hot cup of tea, she stared at the unpacked suitcase lying at the foot of her bed and decided reality could wait a bit longer. Hopping back in bed and looking at the photos from her trip sounded far more enjoyable.
She startled when the phone rang, and a photo of her mother appeared. Maybe it was because she wouldn’t be speaking to her face to face, or maybe because her mother hadn’t had a front-row seat to her budding friendship with Tobias, but Casey decided this might just be the test run she needed.
“Hey, Mom!” She gushed. “Yeah, got back late last night.” “Oh, it was wonderful! We ended up going to New York, too... can you believe I lived there for four years and never saw the Rockefeller Center Tree? Finally crossed that off the bucket list!” “No, neither of us were on social media. We wanted to live in the moment... but I’ll get some pictures up soon.” “I am happy, Ma... I haven’t been this happy in some time!”
Her neck twisted toward her bedroom door as she heard a noise in the hall; that’s where she found Bryce standing with a bowl of cereal already in hand. He went to walk off when he saw she was on the phone, but Casey waved him in.
“Mom, I have to go, Bryce is here. But I’ll call you later and fill you in on all the details.... Of course I'll tell Bryce you said hello, Ma. I love you, too!”
He had already settled into the beanbag chair in the corner of her room, a goofy grin on his face as he enjoyed his... well, Elijah’s Captain Crunch. “You didn’t have to hang up on my account,” he said between spoonfuls. “I would have waited.”
“No... just as well,” Casey insisted. “My mom was five minutes away from asking why we didn’t see her when we were in Philly, and I could do without answering that for now.”
“Mmhhm. So, why didn’t you see her?”
“Same reason we didn’t visit Tobias’s family – that’s not what the trip was about. It was just for fun.”
“And was it?” he asked sincerely. “Fun, that is?”
“It was, Bryce!” She answered more quickly and enthusiastically than she had planned. “I can’t believe it, but it truly put me in the holiday spirit. I didn’t see that coming!”
“I think that might have been Tobias’s plan all along,” Bryce winked. “I should thank him because I love seeing you this happy again... it’s legit, right? You know you don’t have to put on an act for me.”
“I know that,” Casey smiled, taking a seat next to her friend on the rug. “I’m not pretending... I honestly am starting to feel alive again.”
Bryce put the nearly empty cereal bowl aside and gave Casey’s hand a squeeze.
“That’s great because I’ve missed you! It was nice of T to take you on this trip.”
“It was,” she grinned, not comprehending why her cheeks became so flushed.
Bryce lifted the bowl again, gathering the tiny bit of milk that remained on his spoon. “You two have gotten really close, huh?”
“Well, it’s not like that,” Casey replied in a defensive tone. “We’re just friends.”
“OK... I didn’t insinuate you were anything more.”
“I know,” she sighed. “I didn’t mean to snap at you. But, most of the time, when I’m good friends with a guy, everyone assumes it’s something more. And it’s kind of stupid, honestly, because I’m bi... so do people assume I'm fucking anyone I’m good friends with?”
Bryce offered an understanding nod. “As someone who identifies as pan, I can say with full authority... yes. Yes, they do. But fuck them.”
“Fuck who?” Casey asked. “All my friends?”
“No!” he laughed, tossing a pillow her way. “Fuck the idiots who think that. Well, don’t fuck them... screw them. No, don’t screw them either... you... you know what I mean!”
“I do,” Casey giggled. “And you’re right, screw them! Tobias and I love spending time together. We make each other laugh; he’s really helped me these past few months.”
“All good things!” Bryce agreed.
“Exactly! But that doesn’t mean we’re more than friends. I mean, sure, we kissed a couple of times...”
Bryce’s eyes opened wide. “Wait... you what?”
“We kissed. But it’s wasn't a big deal! I mean, you know that. We’ve kissed, and we’re just friends, right?”
“I mean... it was a long time ago...”
“I know, but when we kissed... what were we?”
“Friends.”
“Right!” she snapped her fingers. “And you didn’t think any more of it, did you?”
“Uh...no... I didn’t. Did you?”
“Of course not! Because it was no big deal... Just like me and Tobias. It’s no big deal because we’re just friends.”
“Uh-huh,” Bryce nodded, noting this was her second declaration in seconds. “If you say so.”
“I do!”
“Good!" Assuming they were moving on, he changed the topic. "So, what city was best? Did DC win, or did Philly?”
“Best city, easy,” she winked. “Philly. But the best Christmas tree... that went to New York. Honestly, New York is so magical at Christmas. We even took a carriage ride through Central Park!”
“That’s so cool! I’ve always wanted to do that!”
“Yeah, I made sure the horse was well cared for first...”
“Of course you did,” he chuckled. “I’d expect nothing less.”
“I'm so glad I got to share that with T. It was... perfect! It started snowing, and I swear, it felt like we were in a movie! That's when I saw the mistletoe, so... you know... the kiss.”
“So, your first kiss was on the carriage ride?”
“No, that was our second kiss. But it wasn’t a big deal.”
“Uh, huh,” Bryce muttered. “Uhm, Casey have you ever thought...”
“I mean, we only kissed once before that! Last month... outside of the bookstore in Cambridge. And that’s only because I asked him to!”
“You...asked him... to... kiss you?”
“Yes! Because it had been such a long time since I had been kissed... or anything, really... and I just wanted to know if I could feel something again, you know? But...”
“I know... I know..." Bryce injected. "It didn’t mean anything.”
“EXACTLY! I'm glad we're on the same page!"
Bryce studied Casey carefully, scratching his head.
“So. Why Tobias?”
“Huh?”
“If it was just a kiss between friends... meaning nothing... why did you ask him? You could have asked me? Elijah? Jackie... any of the roomies. But you asked... Tobias.”
“Well, he and I kissed before. You know, back when we were dating... but those were very, very different. Totally different kinds of kissing! So, it made sense.”
“But we’ve kissed before, too,” Bryce smirked. “So, why didn’t you ask me?”
Casey returned his smirk with one of her own. “Do you want me to kiss you, Bryce?”
“No,” he snickered. “I’m just trying to understand your thought process in choosing Carrick.”
“I don't know... it just felt right...”
“Two times. It felt right... two times.”
“Yes! But we agreed not to do it again because we don’t want it screwing us up. We’re just friends... it didn’t mean anything!"
“So you've mentioned,” Bryce rubbed his chin. “But, Casey?”
“Yeah?”
“What if it does?”
Casey turned to him with as much panic if she had been a deer in the wild and Bryce's car was careening toward her on a dark night. “What... what do you mean?”
“I’m just saying... would it be so awful if the kisses meant something?”
“Bryce,” she gasped, lowering her voice even though they were alone. “No... I’m... I’m not ready for anything like that. And, besides... he’s just my friend... there’s nothing more to it.”
“Yes, for the dozenth time. He's just your friend,” he smiled. “Whatever he means to you, that’s for you to figure out... if you want to figure it out at all. I’m just saying, it’s your choice... and if you decide he does mean more, that’s all right, too.”
A slight crinkle appeared on her brow when she turned to Bryce, words she hadn't intended to speak falling from her lips.
“Do you... do you like him?”
“I’m just getting to know the guy... he’s more of your friend than mine. But I have to admit, he’s impressed me. He’s been really good to you, and you appear to make each other happy. Isn’t that what they say it’s all supposed to be about?”
“I... I guess... but we are just friends.”
“And you’re my friend, Casey. So if that’s what you say, I believe you.”
“Thank you,” she smiled in relief.
“Shit!” Bryce cursed, noticing the time on the clock. “I didn't realize it had gotten so late. I've got to get going; I have a date."
"Oh," Casey grinned. "Care to share the details?"
"Nope."
"Do I know them?"
"No comment."
“Uh-huh,” Casey teased. "I have my ways of finding out, you know! Just like Elijah can find out about his Captain Crunch."
"Are you seriously blackmailing me?"
"No," she shrugged. "I mean, I'm blackmailing you, but just for fun. Your secret is safe with me."
Delighted to see his friend bantering and laughing again, he pulled her into a hug.
“It is great having you back, Case. Promise me you won't go away again.”
“I’ll try not to," she said squeezing him tighter. "I promise.”
“And Case... about Carrick.”
“Bryce!”
“I know, I know, but listen! Sometimes, you overthink things way too much. Try not to do that... just... just go where you're happy. That's what it's all supposed to be about.”
“I’ll take that into consideration.”
“That’s all I ask,” Bryce said before heading to the door. “Well, that, and don’t tell Elijah about the Captain Crunch....”
Casey crossed her heart with a grin. “It’s our little secret."

farcille isn't "toxic yuri." nothing remotely toxic about them, they both treat each other with a great deal of care and affection and respect. just because marcille is willing to do forbidden necromancy and arguably cannibalism for her wife doesn't make her toxic that's just what you do for a woman with broad shoulders

no cause some of the shit y'all are saying has me genuinely worried that you don't understand the difference between immigration and SETTLER COLONIALISM. y'all do realize that if jewish people just mass migrated to palestine and lived peacefully among palestinians as neighbors and countrymen, then none of this would be a problem. right? you get that, right? you get that our issue was never "there's too many jews here" but rather "why am i getting kicked out of my house." RIGHT?

this manatee looks like it’s in a skyrim loading screen
#lol good luck finding all of the photoshopped versions in the rb history. ‘manatee restored’ is still my favorite of all time#misc#I encourage anyone dyslexic to try rotating him in your mind. I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to.#also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped#it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially#the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm#which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water#as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun#it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here#I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances#also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential#so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export#but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image

the thing terfs (and transphobes in general) don't seem to get about sexual preferences re: not being attracted to certain genitals is that like. okay. you have a preference. this feature is a turn-off. but that does not mean it is necessary to constantly broadcast how unattractive and undesirable you find people with this feature. you do not have to do that. in fact, it is generally considered quite rude. sexual compatibility or lack thereof has nothing to do with moral purity or legitimacy.
#pigeon.txt#politics#this is not a sentiment exclusive to terfs#although I see it from a lot of them on here#so don't come at me with accusations of hating lesbians or w/e#I see it from PLENTY of cis guys as well

Progress post. Cut out the middle layer today. It's a verk dark grey thin-ish wool.
I fitted it a little bit under the bust compared to the red dress which turned out a bit large. (come laundry day, we shall see if this was a fatal decision).
Luckily it fits over the red dress and under the old apron. Currently. Laundry day is a looming threat...
Making all the visible seams (felling, hem, neckline) in the days to come, then we go onto decorations. Got some lovely silks, but also a pale grey woolen fabric.
Trying to decide on the length of the sleeves and hem. My original plan was to make a short dress, but in currently not sure. Long sleeves look nice, but will they boil me alive?

Just Passing By
From Here to There Series: Because you can't expect my neurodivergent brain to do anything in logical order... I still haven't explained how Tobias & Casey got together. It's time to rectify that. I'll be working on my masterlist to make this all a little less chaotic, I swear! :) I'll also be tidying up some former parts of my HC to tie things together. In the last segment, A New Chapter, we learn how they went from exes after a whirlwind romance to making peace after the chemical attack. It's roughly three weeks after the attack, and Casey is just back home from the hospital. She's struggling with the aftermath, and her friends can't seem to help. Tobias passes by on a whim, and the roommates are not happy to see him. But how will Casey feel?
Book: Open Heart (Book 2 - post Chemical Attack) Pairing: Tobias x Casey (F!MC) (Eventual) Featuring: Roomies - esp Jackie Varma Words: 2,100 Rating: Teen+ A/N: This is part of my HC for the couple.
Full Masterlsit | Tobias & Casey Masterlsit
This wasn't a planned visit. He was just driving home from work. There just so happened to be a parking spot on Casey's block... a parking spot on the streets of Boston? It had to be a sign. Right? It made sense that he'd stop in to see her. At least, that's what Tobias told himself as he made his way down the pavement toward Casey's front door. Her neighborhood didn't lie between Mass Kenmore and his townhome, but that, to him, was irrelevant.
Raised voices could be heard behind the door as he approached, but Casey wasn't among them. He may not talk to her much anymore, but he could still pick her voice out anywhere. He almost turned around; perhaps dropping by unannounced wasn't wise, but it would be foolish to turn back now. So, with a bit of trepidation he raised his hand and knocked.
"I'm coming," a woman shouted. Her voice was marked with annoyance, but when she opened the door, her expression went straight to disgust. "Oh. It's you."
Tobias looked over his shoulder, then turned around with a grin. "Sure is. Were you expecting someone better?"
"I wasn't expecting anyone," Jackie sneered. "But better isn’t really a high bar in your case."
"You’re doing wonders for my ego... Varma? Is it?"
Jackie crossed her arms and eyed him. "Trust. I wasn't put on this earth to coddle men's egos. Why are you here?"
He was about to respond when a more pleasant face appeared. "Jackie, who is it..." Sienna smiled politely when she caught sight of Tobias. "Dr. Carrick, good to see you!"
"Is it?" Jackie smirked as Sienna promptly shushed her.
"Why don't you come in? Is Casey expecting you?"
"No, uh...I was just in the neighborhood and..." he was quickly drowned out by bickering from an adjoining room.
"Just give her time," Bryce insisted.
"I know," Elijah acquiesced. "But she can’t stay locked in her room. How will that improve her mental health?”
"She does have to get past that," Aurora agreed, “but she needs to do it in her own time.”
“He’s right!” Sienna scolded upon entering the room. “The last two weeks have been hell on all of us, and she’s been home three days. Don't expect miracles.”
When they turned to Sienna, several eyes widened when they saw the handsome doctor standing behind her.
“Dr. Carrick,” Aurora acknowledged her boss.
“We’re not at work. It’s Tobias,” he insisted.
Jackie rolled her eyes. “He’s here to see Casey.”
Bryce raised a brow and mumbled to Jackie, but it came out far louder than he planned. “So she won’t talk to us, but she’ll see him?”
Tobias shifted uncomfortably, an unusual sight for the typically confident man. "For what it’s worth, she didn’t know I was coming.”
“Good!” Jackie enthused. “Then this is where I tell you it’s not a good time, and you should leave. If she’s not seeing friends, she’s definitely not seeing you.”
“Jackie!” Sienna reprimanded.
“What? Friends vs. dickhead exes that screwed her over... I think friends would have the edge, don’t you?”
“Jackie!” Sienna said again. “If not for Tobias, Casey and Raf probably wouldn't be here right now. Try to be a little nice."
“Yes. Casey and Raf... yet he’s only checking in on Casey,” Jackie stated. “Funny how that works.”
“Look, Casey’s my friend, too," Tobias defended.
“Since when?” Elijah asked.
“Since after the...” Tobias stopped himself and sighed in frustration. “Look, can you tell her I’m here? If she doesn’t want to see me, I’m out. No questions. But I think it’s her choice to make... not yours.”
Just then, Casey’s bedroom door burst open, and she spun into the hallway with all the grace of a tornado. Her matted hair was tied into a bun that had been slept on for days, and her ratty NYU sweatshirt and pajama bottoms hadn't been changed for just as long. The dark circles under her eyes marked her exhaustion, but she found a burst of energy and was using it to set a few things straight.
“For the record!” She blurted to no one in particular. “I never said I wasn’t going to therapy! I said I’m not going to the therapist’s office! There’s a difference! And I didn’t say I wouldn’t shower... stop acting like I am suddenly allergic to shampoo and body wash! But I’m not showering today! I know you want to help, but you guys need to let me breathe!”
“Let you breathe?” Elijah corrected softly. “Casey, you’ve been alone in your room for three days.”
“And as far as breathing, we’re the ones who won’t be able to if you don’t shower soon,” Jackie countered.
Aurora shot Jackie a look and attempted to be the voice of reason. “Casey. We’re just worried about you. You’re not talking to anyone.”
“Who said I’m not talking to anyone? I just don't want to be smothered. If I wanted that, I would have asked my parents to stay. I just...” her voice trailed when she saw Tobias. “What... what are you doing here?”
“He's leaving,” Jackie jumped in, but Tobias paid her no mind.
“I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d stop in to see you, but I can see it’s not a good time. I’ll text you in a few days, and...”
“No, it’s fine,” Casey interrupted, taking a bit of pleasure from the shocked faces of her friends. “You can stay. Why don’t you... why don’t you come to my room.”
“Are you sure?” He asked nervously.
“Yeah... follow me,” she replied with an unceremonious turn on her heel.
“I can't believe she'll see that jackass and not,” Jackie protested, but her voice was stifled when Sienna’s tiny hand covered her mouth. “Jackie, hush!”
~~~~~
If Casey was happy to see Tobias, you wouldn't have known it by her slouched shoulders and down expression when entered her room. Company of any sort wasn't on her agenda today, particularly not from a guy she once dated when she looked like... this. But feeling it would be rude to backtrack, she gestured toward a chair next to the window as she sat on her bed and pulled a blanket around her. Tobias took a seat in the chair.
“I’m sorry for not calling first...” he apologized.
“It’s OK,” she waved. “I’m sorry for using you.”
“Using me?”
“Yeah,” she sighed. “I think I just used you to get back at my friends. I know they’ve been through a lot these past two weeks, too, and they just want to help, but since I got out of the hospital, they aren’t giving me air.”
“... so you agreed to see me just to piss them off.”
Her cheeks flushed, and a chunk of hair fell out of her discombobulated bun when she lowered her head in embarrassment. “When you say it like that, I sound like a complete bitch. I didn’t do it on purpose... Honestly, I was shocked to see you.”
“You’re not a bitch,” Tobias started. “I don’t think you are, and I don’t think any of your friends do, either. You’re coping with the aftermath of a very traumatic event. No one is going to be upset with you.”
“Still, it wasn’t nice of me to use you.”
“Hey,” he snickered, seeming to come to life. “I’ve been used for worse things and haven't complained. In fact, sometimes I even enjoyed it.”
His heart warmed when he saw a trace of a smile on her face. “Yeah, well... I don’t think you’ll enjoy my company right now... and that's all I'm using you for."
“That’s for me to decide. Besides, I didn’t come to be entertained. I came to see how my friend is doing.”
Casey laughed bitterly as she gestured at her disheveled appearance. “As you can see, I’m living my best life. These clothes may walk off my body if I don’t change them soon. I speak to...no... I bark at my friends in five-minute intervals. I won’t leave my room, much less the apartment. I’m fucking awesome. The spitting image of the woman you met at that diner last year.”
Tobias allowed the silence to hang, and both found themselves surprised by how comfortable it was. Then he sat up, leaning forward on his knees with an earnest expression.
“You’re not the woman I met at the diner last year... no more than I’m the man you met. Things happen... life happens, and people... change. You have to be gentler with yourself. When I lost my father... it was a hellish time for me. There was so much going on, and... well, I was in a bad place. When my Ma came to check on me a week after the funeral, I was wearing the same pajamas I had slipped into that night. Probably hadn’t brushed my teeth more than twice during that time. I’m confident she smelled me from outside in the hall.”
“Perhaps that’s TMI,” Casey half-smiled.
“It’s definitely TMI,” he chuckled. “I’m telling you this because you need to know it’s OK. We all go through hard times when we can’t be expected to be ourselves. We’re entitled to that. You just don’t stay there too long.”
“How long did you stay in it?”
“Me. Oh, it ended the day my Mom showed up. You don’t know her, but she’s a force to be reckoned with. She took one look at me, grabbed me by the ear, and tossed me in the shower with a bar of soap. By the time I got out, the apartment was tidied up, and lunch was being served with a side of one of her best lectures to date.”
“Can you spare me that treatment? I'm really not up for it yet.”
“Nah,” he grinned. “It’s not my place. I’m not your Mom, after all.”
“Yeah, well, my Mom only returned to Philly because I swore I’d be all right, and... I’m not all right, Tobias. I’m not all right at all."
"All right will come... then even better will follow. I promise you, one day, you’ll feel like yourself again.”
Casey turned her head toward the window, her skin appearing ashen in the late afternoon light.
“Forgive me if I don’t believe you,” she whispered so softly it almost went unheard.
“You don’t have to believe me. Not yet. But you will one day, I promise. Now, what were you saying about therapy? You’re seeing Dr. Stevens, right?”
“I am. Well, I mean... I was... I haven’t since I left the hospital and I’m supposed to see her on Friday, but...”
“It’s important to go, Case.”
“I know,” she snapped but softened quickly. “I just... I can’t go see her.”
Tobias nodded in acknowledgment. “Because her office is right next to Edenbrook.”
Casey turned to him, surprised to see he understood. “I am not ready to go back there. I can’t go back there yet.”
“Understood. Dr. Stevens does have privileges at Mass Kenmore.”
“Privileges? Yes," Casey confirmed. But an office? No.”
“Understood. But if she’s willing to, I can arrange for space to meet you there. It’s not a big deal.”
“We could do that?” Casey asked.
“Why don’t you call her in the morning? If she’s willing to see you there, I’ll make it happen.”
Casey nodded her head with a yawn. “I’ll call her. I promise, after I get some sleep.”
“That’s my queue to leave,” Tobias smiled. “You need your rest. But look, if you want the pleasure of my company again, promise me you’ll try to shower when you get up.”
Casey rolled her eyes dramatically as her head hit the pillow. “Fine! But if you think I’m sending you pictures of me in there to prove it or something...”
“Stop,” Tobias chuckled. “I’d never ask a friend to do that... and... we’re friends. Right, Case?”
“Yeah, we’re friends,” she said, her eyes already shutting. “Can you tell my friends I’m going to sleep?”
“Sure,” he smiled, thinking about how delighted they'd be getting that information from him. “Sleep tight, Princess,” he whispered, closing the door behind him.
He could hear a pin drop as he walked down the hallway. He knew his past was working against him, and he had his work cut out for him to prove himself to those who loved Casey most. But he didn't mind. The biggest challenge would be proving it to himself. But he knew his intentions were good, and for once, that was all that mattered.
“She’s taking a rest,” Tobias announced as he passed the living room. “And I’m going to leave.”
He turned around briefly when Sienna called out his name. “Thanks for stopping by.”
“Yes, thanks,” Aurora concurred. "I'll see you at work."
The sun was beginning to set when he stepped out the front door. See, that spot had been there for a reason... because, against all odds, he was able to help, and for Tobias Carrick on this day, that was more than he could have asked for.
Next, we'll see how Tobias & Casey begin spending time together... and how each one of her friends and loved ones issues their own unique warnings. :)
