I've rearranged my room such that the screenless window which opens upward is accessible, and I put a little towel/rag on my bed in front of it, and I went upstairs to get my shoes, and my radio was playing Simon and Garfunkel, and I tried to open the window quietly but couldn't escape the screeching, and it was 2:38 when I left my room.

Closer to 23:30, the moon had been bright and orange, but when I left, it was pale white and shrouded in clouds. I closed the window just a little bit, and started walking towards the playground. It was unexpectedly chilly, and I was fighting against having my teeth chatter. But I was outside! At some point I started singing just because I could (and to avoid being scared). Halfway there, there was a random car passing by. I hid from it, badly, it pulled into a side-street, and then turned around a few minutes later, at which point I was in the full light of a neighbor's yard lantern, and not near enough to any trees to even try to hide again. I'm curious what the people in the car were doing also out so late/early, and what they must have thought about me being outside.

By the time I got to the playground, I sort of needed to use the bathroom, which only ruined the mystical vibes a bit, but it was okay. All the metal and plastic was beaded with dewdrops, my footprints were outlined in water, and the streetlights across the small field were reflecting light off of the viewport bubble window things. I climbed the jungle gym structure, I ascended the slide, I slid down the slide, I touched a tree, and though the moon was faint behind the cloudcover, I looked at the moon too.

As I was on my way home it became even more foggy, almost as if the hillside was in a cloud at one point. I continued singing and talking to myself because I didn't want to get creeped out by the shadows or vague shapes in the darkness, but I was finding it frustratingly difficult to think of more than a scrap or two of lyrics to just a few songs. And two of the main bits of lyrics I had stuck in my head were "life is very short, and there's no ti-iii-i-i-ime..." (Beatles) and "I held her close, but she faded in the night..." (Simon & Garfunkel) which... I was aware at the time of the irony.

There was a second car mysteriously roaming the neighbourhood, and once again I tried and failed to hide from it, but more awkwardly this time. It was 3:50 when I made it back to my room. The window screeched a bit as I opened it, despite my best efforts, and I made sure to only put my shoes on the towel when I climbed through.

The CD had long since run out of songs, and the fog seemed to have crept into my room, because the carpet seemed slightly dewey. It took several attempts spaced out over a couple minutes to close the window, because it kept screeching and I was afraid to attract attention. My dad was scandalized a few weeks ago when he found out I was awake at only 1:30 (I had a conversation with my sister because I wanted to return some yarn and she happened to still be up too, and I had forgotten to whisper), and it was 4:00 by the time I finally closed the window all the way. I put the shoes back upstairs and the towel in the laundry pile and everything back where it needed to be, I turned out the lights and opened the door and turned on the ceiling fan, and I just... went to sleep.

Adventuring successfully accomplished.

I did it! I finally actually went outside at 3 in the morning again (the first time this summer). I made a post a long time ago attempting to romanticize the idea of sitting on swings in the dead of night and staring up at the moon, and while the nearest park may be 1.3 miles away (just calculated it), and doesn't even have swings, I WALKED THERE LAST NIGHT.
