Please don't think I’m a modern (Postmodern?) martyr, my reluctance to receive is practical.

Most people in my life don’t really bother to know me. I received a book for my birthday about a topic on which I’m an acknowledged expert. I’ve interviewed the author. I coulda written the blessed thing. Oh well, be gracious, smile and put it on the shelf.

I'm known among my small tribe for being dry (for the past year or so). So, one just gave me a bottle of Irish whiskey. I’ll tap into it someday. Oy. Ida preferred lottery tickets and a carton of Lucky's, to tellya the truth. Bought any smokes lately? Jesus wept. They're a damn mortgage payment.

So, when a friend dropped by with a present I held my breath as I opened it. And as I tore the paper away I realized it was...perfect. They listened. They know what I like.

Treasure your true friends, the ones who actually care about you. They are an amazing and rare gift by themselves. Wrapping paper not required.

Dear local friend of mine and her wife came over to our place for a BBQ this afternoon. She was curious so I let her give Lucy Gray a try. She shot an arrow through the fence into the fenced in backyard, uphill. Her wife took a picture of her. It made our day.

I love that the process of researching and learning witchcraft/paganism has gotten me back into reading. When I was younger I would read constantly. As I got older I fell away from it because of adult-world stresses and just not having the capacity to learn anything after getting out of college. I’ve been reading books about paganism and witches and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve even started reading other fiction books for fun! Honestly I owe it to my spiritual mentor. She is a MAJOR bookworm and she’s so happy when she’s reading. It made me remember how much I used to love reading and now I can’t stop. I feel connected to myself and the Powers That Be for the first time in a long time. The gods knew what they were doing when they gave me the gift of desperation and led me to AA—it’s transformed my life for the better. Thank you Jackie for reminding me of who I am, you’re the best <3

When you're having a not fun week because your birthday falls on Mother's Day and you have never been able to have children, which you desperately wanted, and you have to go to the funeral of a dear friend, and all your friends rally around to try and cheer you up. It's kinda the sweetest.

friends can help you with mental health!!

tw: depression, hopelessness, suicide?? also you absolutely don't have to take this advice and shouldn't if it won't help you. please consult a professional or at least someone that you deeply trust and can help you if you are struggling. therapy is normal, and i talk to someone. lots of my friends do too. it's okay.

a friend and i have both been struggling with our mental health a bit and feeling like there isn't a point to things, so we have a shared note on the notes app where we add in things that we're looking forwards to in the future, and we keep on adding it as more things come up! along with journaling, coping mechanisms, and talking to mental health professionals, having this list has also helped a ton.

examples include:

a hiking day in may with friends

having a summer picnic with each other

helping out to paint and do art for a local function

finishing up an article and getting it published in the local newspaper

going to a new museum in our local city

and more!!

the list can help keep you and your friend hopeful for the future because there is going to be a lot of fun coming up! it can also help you guys gently encourage each other or any other friends that you add to it by going "we have x event coming up, let's be positive and look forwards to that in a couple of days."

adding on to the list at any and all times is also encouraged, in good and bad mental health!! keeping the list filled up also reminds us how important it is to reach out to people and to find our own happiness.
