Wiztober Day 19: For Better or Worse - What should have been a simple recon mission and fetch quest quickly spiraled out of control, for better and worse.
This fic was made in collaboration with @klaraflamez! It takes place in her Wizard101 postcanon/rewrite, the Cleaved AU. Things aren't quite as they seem in this Spiral...
Content warnings: multiple instances of swear words (so it's not PG-13), and both canon-typical and canon-atypical violence.
If you want to read the fic with font variation for flavor (and maybe a secret or two in between the lines :3), here's the fic in its original format.
Word Count: 7866
It was supposed to be a pretty simple quest. Sneak into a heavily secured Schismist fort in the middle of the day, take the blueprints for an incredibly dangerous machine they’ve got, and hightail it out of there. No harm, no foul, no need to use that license to kill they gave him.
Unfortunately for Flare Rouge and Jane Doe, the young Wizard that (for better and worse) the Arcanum assigned to him to watch over, the fort was in a world that nobody had a key for. The elusive and fascinating Novus, a world said to only be about 25 years old, a world that didn’t exist in Flare’s original spiral! What a joy would that be to see!
Alas, getting there was another story.
And it still is another story. Sorry Flare, I know you and Jane probably have a ton of good memories you want written out, spending so long adventuring. But there’s a lot to get through.
Moo Bu was fantastic company on the long trip from the Jade Palace to Catmandu, over which hung one of Novus’s shards. He had a thousand stories to pass the time, open ears for Jane and Flare to share their stories with as well, and many a wisdom to dispense. Moo dispensed his final wisdom as their journey split (him up the scarlet Stone of Heaven, and them to Conatus, where the fort stood): “Be careful dealing with the people in charge there. The governors are egoists first, leaders a distant second. And your… Arcanum also sound like bigshots. Do not let them use you.”
Flare nodded slowly. “Thanks, but we’ve got this.” He didn’t like the implication that Moo was hinting at, but there wasn’t time to argue. Jane was already rushing to the pale blue leyline gate. “JANE! WAIT UP!”
“WE DON’T HAVE TIME TO WAIT!” Jane shouted back. Then to Moo Bu she hollered, “BYE! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!” before disappearing through the gate.
Flare rolled his eyes, but couldn’t hold back a laugh. Ms Whisperwind had warned Flare that Jane was flighty as a pup and needed overseeing. Jane’s impulse and determination were why Flare enjoyed questing with her. Sure, she was his responsibility and 10 years his junior, but she was also a friend. They both ran at a million miles an hour and often ran together, an unstoppable duo of Sorcerers! He hurried after her, zipping through the leyline gate.
~
Conatus sprawled out in front of Flare and Jane, a sight unlike anything the two had seen before. Stone cliffs wide, smoothed, curved, and jutting out like way too many fingers on a pair of palms. Soft white loamy sands down below. A massive indigo waterfall from what almost looked like an eye, tumbling into a massive waving lake. Many tents, gardens, markets, and camps for the other five nations that Novus’s shards hung over. Karamelle, Marleybone, Polaris, Monquista, and Valencia.
Notably, there was no Schismist fort to be seen, but that only made sense. Why would a secretive cult have a major base of operations where everyone could see? It’s a good thing the Arcanum provided Flare and Jane with some particularly convenient maps: of Conatus, and of the base’s interiors, including the location of the Schismists’ lab, where the dastardly plans lay.
Jane opened the map of Conatus up, and Flare peeked over her shoulder. “There’s no way we can go through the main entrance,” she said, pointing at the entrance marked on the map. “Even with the Arcanum promising to keep the Schismists’ attention, we’d be spotted super easy by whoever stayed behind. Is there some side entrance we can go through?”
“Yep, they’ve got that animal sanctuary,” Flare said. He took out the other map and laid it out on the floor. “Thing is, that’s pretty darn far away from the lab. We might get caught the longer we stay and move around.”
“C’mon, we can do it! I’ve got experience sneaking about back when I was a pirate. And you can… well…” Jane’s train of thought trailed off. Flare was not stealthy in the slightest.
“I could polymorph into a ninja pig-” Flare spitballed.
Jane snort-laughed at the idea. “YES.”
Flare laughed as we,,. “Pogchamp! That’s our plan!”
“More like pigchamp?”
“YES!” Flare cheered. He gathered the map and hopped up to his feet. “I’ve trained ya well in the art of the pun. Now, let’s get going.”
~
The two of them made their way down to the sanctuary entrance, tucked between some cliff walls that at a distance looked like one surface. Flare put his hand against the door and made a portal to the other side. Portals were one of the magics that he had carried from his home, outside every Spiral, and thus were a tad shakier to use here. (This Spiral seems to resist every magic that isn’t its own.)
Even riskier still to try and make a portal to a place he had never set foot into. The furthest Flare could trust his portals into unknown territory was a few feet. In other words, safely past this wall but not more.
Jane put on her mask and helmet. The portal opened. Flare polymorphed. The two hopped through. The portal closed behind them.
For better and worse, they’re in.
Jane scurried to the shadowed edges of the sanctuary, and Flare hustled up a tree with newfound ninja agility. A peculiar mustache-bird of some kind flew up to Flare. Flare fought back the mounting panic of him being discovered already. It’s just a harmless bird. Not an enemy. He held out a hoof to gently pat the bird. There’s a good birdie. Calm. Friend, he thought at it. He also decided to spare a moment to magically *Check what the bird was, get some more information.
A 2D textbox appeared in front of Flare, with a splash of flavortext explaining the little creature. [Follicle Falcon (Star-Balance, rank 21 Elite): Native to the Stone of Heaven. Well known as therapy pets for their Empathic Abilities.]
So thinking at ya was the right call, Flare realized. There’s a good bird. Kinda wish I could adopt one of y’all from these guys… You deserve better than being raised by cultists, y’know?
In the meantime, Jane had made her way across the sanctuary to the door without any of the other creatures spotting her. Got the door open! Lockpicks :> she Whispered to Flare.
Perfect. Flare crept through the tree cover and climbed on the sanctuary walls, making his way over. I’ll go in first in case anybody’s right inside. Maybe they’ll miss me slipping into the rafters or something.
Jane gave a thumbs up.
Flare nudged the door open and swung inside. The room was thankfully empty, and also a bedroom? Furnished and decorated, with Life motifs everywhere. A fuzzy moss-looking carpet, a soft bed nested in bookshelves, walls lined with various supplies that Flare couldn’t investigate too closely, and a closed wardrobe. Not what he was expecting, but then again… what had he been expecting in the first place? He hadn’t really come into this plan with… any preconceived notions on what a violent apocalyptic cult’s base would look like. He wasn’t one for judging someone based off how others portrayed them, a trait that had caused him to butt heads with this Spiral’s Arcanum many times. Always considering the other perspective, never taking something as face value, save for the Arcanum itself. Because he knew the Arcanum from his own Spiral. But all this debate he got into for his differing views was all in good faith, right? A compromise could be reached eventually. Besides, if they were truly evil, he’d be able to see it for himself.
Maybe the Schismist’s base would show its true colors outside of what was obviously a personal bedroom.
Room’s empty. We’re clear, Flare Whispered to Jane.
Jane stepped in and paid little heed to the room’s decor, heading straight to the other door. She tested the doorknob- it was already unlocked. Hey, weird question, does this feel too… easy for you? she asked.
Not yet, Flare admitted. We’re only two rooms in. It’ll probably ramp up the further we go in. Leah’s not the kind of person to just throw us in the deep end immediately, he reasoned to himself. The story needs time to build, right?
Right.
Jane nodded and opened the door to the halls. She slipped behind a potted plant by the door and Flare climbed up into the rafters above the hanging lights. The floors were lined with neat runner-rugs, a very pleasing blue and purple palette that reminded Flare of his favorite sweater, and distinctly not the dark malachite green and gold normally associated with the Schismists.
The Arcanum had warned that the Schismists were fickle foes. Changing their name and their faces, but carrying the same dangerous ideologies across the ages. They’ve supposedly done it before, posing as the otherwise noble-intentioned Chronomancers in maroon and white in Mirage maintaining the Sands of Time, or the Dark Cloud Agents in grey and purple and silver harassing the Nimbari of Empyrea. Of course they’d do it again, especially after the Wizard had lain waste to those Schismist offshoots 25-odd years ago. This particular chapter of the Schismists, at the heart of Novus, called themselves the Astral Alliance.
Flare and Jane snuck their way through the fort. It was suspiciously quiet. The two of the only caught sight of some folks hanging out in what looked like a library similar to the Arcanum’s Repository, and a lemur-person checking on the sleeping Rainbow Eucalyptus tree planted down the way.
A door opened right underneath Flare! An impossibly tall moose-person stepped through the doorway, speaking to someone inside the room he had just come from: “All we can do is hope, Chancellor.”
Flare held his breath. Leah, don’t leave me hanging. Please.
The moose’s ear twitched. He hesitated for a moment, hand to his muzzle, then straightened up with a snap of his fingers. “Er, actually, I remembered one last thing on my mind,” he said. “If I may.”
“Oh?” responded this Chancellor figure from inside. “What is it now, Manti?”
“That newest recruit-” Manti closed the door, muting the conversation too quiet for Flare to hear.
THAT WAS WAY TOO CLOSE, Jane screamed in the Whisper.
Flare nodded. We got real lucky. Anyway, next door over is the lab. Jane’s earlier comment about this quest being too easy rang in his mind again. That was so close to leading to a disaster! Had this Manti fellow heard him? Did he think it was just the wind? Did he- god forbid- know? Leah, please. Prove my worst panicking wrong. Save us. Help.
No, no there’s no way Manti knew. If he knew Flare was sneaking around, surely he would’ve sounded an alarm of some kind! Or made ANY sort of move, an attack or a word of acknowledgement like I know you’re there. You came far but now you’re found out. You made a mistake coming here’ or some other archetypical monologue! He wouldn’t just know and say nothing about it.
Of course. Right. Yeah, we’re in the clear. Thanks.
Flare was overthinking.
Oh, come on, you didn’t have to say that.
Jane came out of her hiding spot and tried to pick the lab door open. However, none of her picks seemed to work. “Stupid- dammit- C’mon- Why are you harder- than the fucking outside door- you bastard-” she cursed under her breath, getting more agitated with each repeat attempt. This lock must’ve been enchanted, or just more heavy duty. Flare I think we might just need a portal past this son of a bitch.
Flare dropped down from the rafters and unpolymorphed. One portal past this son of a bitch coming right up, he Whispered back, echoing the vulgarities back because sometimes you just have to call a door a son of a bitch. Hand to the door, he tried to project a portal just barely past the door. No more than… six inches in. That’d still be well in the doorway and thus well without the odds of portaling into some furniture.
The two stepped in, expecting to be the only ones inside.
Instead, there was a hippocampus girl inside, wearing a true Schismist uniform of green and gold, and holding a batch of blueprints in her arms. “Arcanum,” she hissed upon seeing the two.
Flare closed the portal.
“Hey bastard!” Jane jeered. “You’ve got something that we can’t letcha have!”
“These plans don’t belong to you.” The stranger backed up towards the open window on the back wall.
“We have to take them, for the sake of the Spiral!” Flare countered, stepping forward. If she dared to fly out that window, he could chase after her.
“You know nothing about the matters you’re meddling with,” the woman spat, “nor any understanding about what the Spiral needs!”
Flare dismissed the stranger’s words, and *Checked her. Mercy was rarely an option in the Spiral, and it was painfully obvious to Flare that there was no choice but to defeat and collect here, and he’d like to know what kind of enemy she was before jumping into a fight. [Shrub (Star, Rank 20 Elite) - the Old One’s daughter. Schismist like him. Raised to be a prodigy Wizard. Dangerous.]
A Wizards’ duel circle sprung up at his feet. The circle pulled Shrub in, and then Jane joined Flare. Jane noticed the textbox in front of Flare. “What’sit say?”
“Star school… which could mean just about anything,” Flare answered. “And she’s the Old One’s daughter too. Whoever that is.”
“Ah, so she’s geezer the second.”
Shrub was visibly taken aback, insulted even. But she said nothing more.
Both sides wanted this fight to end quick. The longer they stayed, the more chance there was that someone would come in and discover them. Unfortunately, Flare and Jane made a dynamic duo with him as support to her offense, and Shrub was a pesky foe with all of the worst utility a foe with Myth and Balance mastery could have. Whenever Jane had too many blades, Shrub would Earthquake them off. Whenever Shrub dared to summon an aura on herself, Flare would pop it with a Supernova. Plays upon counterplays. Neither side went down easily.
Shrub’s health ticked down slow and eventual. She had no heals of her own, while Flare was able to keep Jane’s health stable with Availing Hands, and his own health up with the occasional Dark Shepherd. Jane grinned as she looked down at her spread of cards and pip count. “You’re going down!”
“What the hell’s going on in there!?” a voice shouted through the door. The handle rattled. “Shit. ALICE!” The person ran off to find this Alice.
Flare broke the duel ring apart. God fucking damn it. Of course you wouldn’t let it be so easy, Leah. One hit away from defeating Shrub or no, the two of them HAD to leave. Alice was a foreboding force, if she had access to this room that a typical anonymous soldier wouldn’t.
“What the hell?!” Jane protested. “We had this!”
“That was before god put us on a timer of BASICALLY ZERO,” Flare countered. “We need to go.” He made a portal to outside, the indigo lake visible.
Shrub shoved Jane aside and barreled through the portal as soon as it was large enough for her to fit, like there was a fire at her heels too.
“HEY! GET BACK HERE!” Jane shouted at her, rushing after.
Flare ran out last, closing the portal behind him. As he stopped to catch his breath, he watched Shrub run… and couldn’t help but wonder for a moment why a Schismist warrior would be so desperate to flee the Schismists’ fort too.
Jane’s shouts crashed through Flare’s pondering. “FLARE! COME ON! WE CAN’T JUST LET HER GET AWAY LIKE THAT!”
Flare huffed and stretched his arms and wings out. “I’m coming!” Whatever weird infighting and sabotage and subterfugue there was plaguing the Schismists would have to wait. Flare and Jane had a job to do.
~
The two chased Shrub down to another leyline gate, but by the time they appeared on the other side, Shrub was out of sight. “SHIT!” Jane cursed. “MOTHERFUCKING DAMMIT! SON OF A BITCH!”
Flare draped a wing around Jane. “We’re not gonna give up,” he promised. “We just gotta look around for a bit. We don’t even have to rush anymore. We can just… take a breather. Maybe some snacks?”
Jane’s eyes brightened up at that. She was always up for a snack. Could you blame her? She was a growing kid, always hungry. “Y’know what, yeah. I could go for something.”
Flare looked around. These buildings all seemed very… official. Legislative. That’s the word. Not much of a place to get snacks. He approached a hamsterman in a suit and tie. “Excuse me, sir, would you happen to know where we can get something to eat?” he asked. “We’re, uh… tourists. This is our first time here.”
“Tourists, ja? Welcome to Wunderland! Karamelle’s wondrous bite of Novus, discovered by the renowned Alice von Wunder,” the hamsterman said. “You’ll find the lovely Shopping Town on the other end of the shard. Just follow the West Path!” He pointed to a brick path winding past an open gate. “Though, if the cotton candy storms are still over the bridge, you’ll have to go the long way round instead, down to Karamelle itself und sailing up from the Candyrock Summits.”
“Thanks, mister,” Jane piped up.
“Of course, of course!” the hamsterman assured. “Oh- also, are you alright, darling? You swore very loudly when coming out of the leyline!”
“Sprained my ankle,” Jane quickly lied.
“I was able to heal it,” Flare added, letting his hand glow with magical healing light, the Helping Hand spell out of combat. “Magic.”
“Ah, ja, of coure. Wizard types,” the man said. “Well, I won’t hold you here any longer! Have an Olde-Fashioned Delightful Day!™”
~
The West Path was a beautifully curated trail among the woods. The brick road lined with candylike flowers. Gumdrops and peanut-buttercups and fondant roses. The trees were dense around the path, but occasionally there was an opening. Suppose if someone wanted to take a hike or have a picnic, or a boss battle in peace.
If I weren’t used to Wizard101 logic I’d say that’s completely oxymoronic. A boss battle in peace. As if.
You know what I mean.
Yeah yeah.
“Hey, do you think the Alice here and the Alice that other guy was calling for are the same person?” Jane asked, interrupting the banter between an author and his character.
“Not really. Do you?” Flare asked.
“It’s just… kinda weird. Coincidental?”
Flare shrugged. “Alice isn’t that rare a name.”
“Yeah, but… isn’t the whole deal with the Schismists that they’ve snuck into everywhere? Including politics? Like claiming the shard?”
“That is fair, but… sometimes a political figure is just that. Political. Not a cultist. We shouldn’t be trying to see more people as enemies than we have to.”
“Yeah, yeah… mercy and all that,” Jane sighed. “I just… don’t wanna be blindsided. Because I’m supposed to be the next Wizard… not to mention all the pirating… I gotta keep my eyes open, y’know? Like Ione said.”
“Ione’s always been a bit of a hardass.” Flare knew the Iones in both this spiral and his well. They mean well, but can sometimes get a bit… tunnel visioned. This spiral’s Ione was worse about it by leagues. “You can keep your eyes open for more than just enemies to fight.”
“I guess. I just… don’t wanna end up on a prison galleon in Polaris or something, you know? Or worse.”
“Yeah, I know…” Flare nodded. It’s unfair, Jane has a lot of expectations on her shoulders at any given time. He could only do so much to alleviate the stress that everything piled up on her. “Can I ask why ya said Polaris specifically? Have you been, before?”
“Not in Polaris, that was just at the tip of my tongue for some reason. I had been in Skull Island, but a pair of pirates helped bust me out bef-” Jane stopped walking. She looked up at the sky in front of her in fear. “Flare.”
“Yeah?” Flare asked, now worried. He looked to where Jane as looking. “Oh-” In front of them roared a massive pink windstorm, engulfing the edges of the land. He tried to *Check the monstrosity.
[KLorem Ipsum Hamster Cinnamon Mole Hurdy-Gurdy]
“Leah,” Flare muttered, unable to keep his irritation at me silent. “Kindly. What the fuck.”
Jane raised an eyebrow. “Who the fuck is Leah?”
“I said that aloud?”
“Yep.”
Flare pinched the pridge between his eyes. “Oh.” Shit how do I explain that we’re characters being written out without giving you an existential crisis!? “Well… he’s basically the Raven, Spider, and Bartleby of the universe I came from.”
“Huh.” Jane hesitated. “His name sounds like just some guy.”
“Yeah. He kinda is. He’s also a massive troll, like what the fuck kind of flavor text is this, man??”
Cinnamon flavor text.
Flare sighed heavily. “I walked right into that one. Son of a bitch.”
“Wait, he answered you???” Jane asked, staring at Flare in utter bewilderment.
“Oh. Yeah. He does that, for better or worse… Usually better.”
“Huh.” Her voice was hollow, Flare’s attempts to stave off the existential crisis had failed. Her friend can just… talk to God. Casually. Damn. If only she could talk to any of the Big Three. But as the existentialism sank in, a miracle unfolded itself in front of the duo. The cotton candy storm parted, like Moses at the Red Sea.
Flare stared at the storm in bewilderment. “... Son of a bitch rescinded. Doubling down on the ‘what the fuck’, though.”
“... if I think about this too long I think I’m going to go crazy,” Jane resolved, shaking her head briskly. “But why did- wait nope. That’s thinking about it. Nope nope nope. Can’t do that.” She pushed ahead.
Flare, however, could think about it for longer without going crazy. This meta talk was his normal. So… why this whole cloud thing? Why’d it part for us? Is reality just… kinda fucky? Shitposty? Is this… I can’t think of a better word, normal for this Spiral?
Normal is a meaningless word in Novus and its many shards. This world is Nothing that Flare had ever seen. Magics that never had the chance to surface in his Spiral dance freely in this one. Storms that feast upon existentialism are just one of the ways the fuckiness manifests. For better and worse, there’s more to come.
~
Flare and Jane breached the far edge of the cotton candy storm. The marketplace sprawled out in front of them, with shops advertising sweets galore. The docks were quite busy as well, with one grand ship coming in right now. But right now, there were more important things to pay attention to.
“So… whatcha thinking?” Flare asked, gesturing to the motley of market stands.
Jane looked around, scanning the shops for what exactly she was in the mood for. And then she found it: the holy grail of snacks, the El Dorado of Wunderland. “Chocolate. Over there.” She hurried along, and Flare followed close by.
The hubbub of the market and docks seemed to get louder and louder. Flare glanced out at it, trying to see and hear what was going on. Two voices clamored above the din, though Flare couldn’t see who was shouting it: “... of eVERYTHING DON’T LET IT BE WHAT I THINK IT IS!”
“THEY SAID, AND I QUOTE, ‘GOOD LUCK KICKING THE CALAMARI’S ASS’!”
Flare laughed. “Damn, what the fuck? Jane, you hearing this?”
“Yep. I’m also hearing my stomach growl like crazy! C’mon!” Jane called. “You’ve got the money!”
“I’m coming, I’m coming!”
Karamellian candy hit different. Of course a world that’s an entire candy pun would specialize in some downright magical treats. Flare and Jane found a nice shaded spot to sit, chill, and snack. Flare kept his eyes on the skies. That Shrub… After this snack break, he and Jane would have to hunt her down. She probably had to fly around the cotton candy storms. That is… if she was even here. There was a chance that she was headed to some place in the middle of the woods, on the other side of the cotton candy storms, not having to fly at all.
Jane had much less serious things on her mind for now. She heard the mechanical whirr of some sort of… incredibly smooth clockwork come up to her. She looked down and gasped. A small mechanical cat sat in front of her. A bright red coat of paint on its face and body, its ears and tail segmented and silvers, its legs replaced with small wheels under its body. It stared up at Jane with the brightest digital (OwO) expression on its screen of a face. “Flare,” Jane gasped, staring at it as well, completely enamored.
Flare glanced down. “Oh! Where’d this fella come from?”
“No idea. It’s adorable, though.” Jane pet the metal kitten  on its head. It stretched its head up to meet her hand. A digital “Meow!” rang from it. “I’m keeping it,” Jane resolved.
“It’s not owned, is it?”
“It’s not wearing a collar.”
Flare decided to *Check it just in case. [Kit_10. The purrfect pet of Tomorrow! This one isn’t currently owned :3] “It’s your lucky day.”
Jane picked the Kit_10 up and hugged it close. “Hell fuckin’ yeah! I just gotta figure out what to name ya…”
“I’m sure a name will come to ya soon enough,” Flare said. He went back to watching the skies. Where could Shrub have possibly gone?
THERE! On a building by the docks! Leaning against the roof, the greens of her skin and suit almost blending in with the green rooftiles. Key word, almost. There was no way she was just… chilling up there. Flare could see the blueprints in her hands. She must be watching, or listening, or both. As much as Flare wanted to get up and see what was Shrub was espyin’ upon, he knew he’d be spotted if he moved.
Maybe that’d be to his advantage.
“I’m gonna see what’s up with the crowd,” he told Jane. “I’ll be back.”
Jane nodded. “I’ll be trying to come up with names for this guy.”
And down Flare went. Casual, unassuming, he tried his best to not look at Shrub. If she saw him looking at her, she’d know he knew she was there. These sorts of mind games were really dizzying to spell out, but not too hard for him to actually grasp and act upon. Meanwhile, the crowds were talking. Through all the hubbub, Flare couldn’t quite make out what any one person was saying, aside from a few key phrases that seemed almost entirely nonsequitur: Calamari, eldritch putty, Stallion Quartermane, Astral Alliance, Lemuria.
Lemuria was an incredibly… touchy point. It was why Flare was in this second Spiral in the first place. The Schismists of this Spiral had somehow come over to his own, stole an entire world, and brought it here. Flare had come over to this Spiral to warn its Arcanum that the Schismists were making these big moves, while his Arcanum had sent Maulwurf von Trap, ex-Schismist and skilled spy, to infiltrate the Schismists’ ranks and perhaps devise a way to bring Lemuria back?
Now that Flare thought about it, he hadn’t ever had much of a chance to check in on Maulwurf. Every time he actively remembered his friend, there’d always be something else that he HAD to take care of. But right now, there was no such rush. Flare tried to send a Whisper: Hey! Checking in. You safe? How’s Lemuria?
No response.
He must be busy too, Flare realized. Sadge.
He glanced up towards the building, and just barely caught sight of Shrub’s tail slipping into the window. Damn, perfect timing. Had he looked up a second later, he would’ve missed that. Thank god I saw that. You’re welcome. That building had to be a meeting point of some kind, why else would she have snuck in? Trying to go inside, then coming out through the front door, then sneaking her way into another building would only risk her being noticed by the other people in the crowds.
Flare went back to Jane. “Whenever you’re ready, I found Shrub. We can go yoink the blueprints.”
“Oh shit!” Jane gasped. She stood up. “You bet your ass I’m ready! Let’s go!” She put her helmet on, then picked the Kit_10 up. “I’ll name this guy later. Haven’t had anything good come to mind.”
~
Flare and Jane went down to the building. It was a quaint three-story tower looking out over the docks. Makes sense the Schismists would want a foothold in a busy port, keep an eye on who comes and goes. There was a sign on the door saying “Authorized Personnel Only” in a handful of languages.
“Think we can just portal in?” Jane asked.
Flare looked up to the third floor. “It’ll be risky. We dunno the layout inside. I don’t wanna open up a portal into the middle of the room.”
“We kicked Shrub’s ass once before, we can do it again. This isn’t the entire fort. We won’t get swarmed”
“Meow!” the Kit_10 seemed to agree.
Flare mulled it over, but finally relented. “Alright. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.” He opened a portal, and prayed that there’d be cover.
The portal opened up to the top of a stairwell. There was a hall and a bend between it and the main room. Perfect.
The duo crept in. Jane put the Kit_10 down. “Okay kitty, I need you to be quiet,” she whispered. “No meows, okay?”
The Kit_10 nodded its mechanical little head.
There was talking within the main room. Voices heard, but faces unseen. “- did not go as smoothly as we had planned, sir.” Shrub’s voice. “The Arcanum sent two of its soldiers to interfere and attempt to retrieve your works as well.”
“I trust you disposed of them?” an older man asked.
“I could not. They were too coordinated, and able to heal back the damage I cast. I only escaped because they fled as soon as we heard an Alliance grunt fetch a senior member.”
“I see. A botched mission that you succeed in is better than one you fail, but moving forward I expect you to do better.”
“Of course, sir.”
A silence.
“... Father,” Shrub amended.
A chill ran through Flare as he put two and two together. He made a text box, silent. [the Old One himself.]
Oh shit, Jane mouthed. She glanced down, to check on the Kit_10. It wasn’t at her feet. She tapped Flare’s arm and pointed down at where the Kit_10 no longer was.
Oh shit, Flare mouthed as well. Fuck, where did it go?!
The Old One made but the slightest ‘hm’ of recognizing his other title. “I trust these two soldiers didn’t track you.” As if the Arcanum would ever resort to tactics that low! Flare and Jane had followed her themselves, they were just that good, no extra trackers required!
“Of course not,” Shrub assured. “They made no physical contact with me, and I was airborne and past the treeline by the time they came through the leyline gate. Additionally, the cotton candy storms are swarming, and only one of the soldiers is winged. With how coordinated they were, I doubt he would have chased after me alone, especially considering he was merely support to the other.”
“Meow!”
OH SHIT. THAT WAS FROM THE MAIN ROOM.
Silence, and then “Meow! Meow! Meow! Meeeow! Meeeow! Meeeow! Meow! Meow! Meow!”
“There goes stealth,” Jane grumbled. “Fuck it.” She charged to the main room, Flare right behind, to see the Kit_10 desperately shaking its head and whipping its tail around, as if struggling in the grip of… the Old One. An imposing figure, standing some seven foot tall, his piercing pale gray eyes, immaculate suit (classy top hat included), and posture all radiating an aura of cold command. That was one hell of a B.B.E.G. a la modern video game design if Flare had ever seen one.
Shrub reacted to Jane and Flare barging in first, however. “YOU! How did you-”
“As if we’d ever let you know, Shrub!” Flare retorted. “You ran into the wrong Wizards!”
“You gave them your name?” the Old One asked Shrub.
“I would never!” Shrub insisted. “They- I won’t let you two show me up again!”
The Old One stretched a wing to Shrub’s shoulder, the claw at the tip poking at her skin. “You are being rash. Your judgement clouds.”
“Meow!” the Kit_10 screeched, releasing a spark from its body. The Old One flinched and dropped it, and it rushed right over to Jane.
“… I see the Arcanum’s judgement has clouded over as well, if they think they can send two of its pawns to properly meddle,” the Old One continued. “I suppose you had chance abound to turn back, but mercy is not an option within the Arcanum.”
Flare hated how the Old One ripped that philosophy out of his soul and turned it against him. But… he was right, wasn’t he? There’s no way this can end peacefully now. There was no way the Old One and Shrub would let them leave, with or without the blueprints. There was bound to be a fight. Flare tightened his grip on his spelldeck, and Jane on her wand.
“Your deaths are entirely your fault,” the Old One warned. He snapped his fingers, and into battle he dragged himself, Shrub, Flare, and Jane.
Flare quickly *Checked the chthonic man. [The Old One (Myth-Life, Rank 20 Boss) - Secret author of history. Always watching, always nudging. Actually dangerous.] “Oh, this is gonna suck,” Flare groaned. Good luck kicking the calamari’s ass, indeed!
“How bad?” Jane asked.
“Myth-Life. He can heal.”
“Motherfucker.”
Even though the duel circle had declared that Flare and Jane would move first, the Old One had a cheat up his sleeve. A Wyldfire sprung around them all. The Old One didn’t make any scoff or taunt about how apparently he had even more than just two schools of magic at his command.
Flare handed Jane a Blade, and Jane wasted no time attacking Shrub. She had learned from the first fight with her, trying to stack multiple buffs was a waste of time, a pesky Earthquake would just toss it to the wint. This fight would have to be won by a thousand papercuts, and hopefully they can outdamage the Old One’s heals.
An aura sparked to life at the Old One’s feet, and Shrub cast a Spiritblade upon her father. And then the damndest thing happened: the Death portion of the Spiritblade popped, and a second set of Myth- and Lifeblades took its place.
“What the fuck?!” Jane shouted. “That’s bullshit!”
“Now I get what the ‘actually’ was for,” Flare muttered. “He’s gonna sweep us.” But for now, the two of them were still standing. Flare used a cheeky Donate Power, Jane would need all the pips she could get for attack spamming. Jane bid her time with an aura of her own. The Old One cast a pesky weakness on Jane, and Shrub once again lent a blade to her father, which once again burst into a Myth- and Lifeblade pair.
Flare’s heart sank deeper. What was that… six different blades on the Old One in two turns?! If he hit, then the two of them would absolutely wipe. There’s no way Jane could take a triple-bladed hit, and Flare wouldn’t be in good shape either! He cast a Spirit shield on Jane, and Jane lobbed another attack at Shrub. Her attacks weren’t the strongest as is, and that extra Weakness from last round DID NOT HELP.
Finally, the Old One sent an absolute behemoth of an attack. Tatzlewurm, a nasty AOE that neither Jane nor Flare had ever seen, let alone been on the receiving end of! Shielding Jane was the right call! Holy shit! Shrub then cast an attack of her own, at Jane! Just to pile on the pain.
Only three rounds in and this fight was already going bad. Flare chose to heal himself with an Availing Hands, and Jane picked out a Tower shield to also help Flare stay on his feet- but before either spell could come out, the Old One had yet another cheat?! Out of absolutely NOWHERE, a DoT burned into existence at the two Wizards’ feets, then a frigid Balefrost took Wyldfire’s place.
Flare was damn glad that he and Jane both went on the defensive!
The Old One decided to go defensive as well, casting a Tower Shield of his own- that glitched and became an absorb for-
“EX FUCKING CUSE ME?!” Jane shouted out of turn. “FIVE FUCKING THOUSAND?!”
“You made a mistake trifling in Schismist affairs!” Shrub taunted on the Old One’s behalf. “Now you see what you’re messing wi-”
“Enough!” the Old One scolded Shrub. “You make yourself seem a fool with your banter.”
Admonished, Shrub simply cast her spell, a Balanceblade like before. Strangely, this time, it didn’t split. Did the Old One’s abilities depend on which Global buff was up?
“Jane, try casting a bubble,” Flare suggested. “We could use the extra edge, and… I’ve got a theory.”
Jane nodded and cast out a Balance of Power while Flare healed himself again. The bubble took over the Balefrost for a moment, then faltered.
“Alright. That solves nothing. Good to know,” Flare grimaced.
“Playing by this bastard’s rules…” Jane growled. She glanced down at the Kit_10 at her feet. This was all the damn pet’s fault! If it hadn’t rolled out here, then there would’ve been a chance that they could’ve avoided this fight! If Jane hadn’t taken it in the first place, then it wouldn’t have been anywhere near here! Mad at the damn pet, mad at herself. But it’s not like she could do anything about it now! She’s in a fight! And… she doesn’t have the heart to leave such an itty bitty weird clockwork kitty all alone. A captain doesn’t abandon any of her crew, not even the kind that gets her in danger. She made a damn commitment to the Kit_10, for better and for worse.
The fight dragged on, Flare and Jane both struggling to keep themselves and each other alive. Flare began to rely heavily on Dark Shepherd to sustain himself, but even that wasn’t enough. They hardly had the chance to properly attack, and what damage they did do to Shrub and the Old One was quickly healed back up, either by Healing Currents that the Old One just happened to be able to use as a Darkwind crackled around them, or with a healing spell Flare had never seen before, Never Say Die, when the Old One’s own Balance of Power shone.
Flare couldn’t see a way out. Everything he tried to think of felt like it would fail, either thanks to his own exhaustion or the Old One’s power or the Spiral itself enforcing its rules and rejecting every other magic. He couldn’t break the duel circle apart because he wasn’t the one who summoned it this time! He couldn’t summon portals while in combat, and even if he could, it’s not like he could go through them! The duel circle kept him right where he stood. The other nonSpiralian magic he had didn’t translate well into Spiral combat, plus how much could it even possibly do, as spent as Flare was already? How much determination did he really have, in the face of certain doom? His hands were tied. Perhaps he’d be a braver and foolier martyr who could say ‘fuck it’ and try some desperate gambit, if it weren’t for the fact that Jane was here. He had to keep Jane safe. He was bound to that duty.
Jane didn’t have her own ‘Jane’ to keep safe. She was getting pissed. Trying to help Flare heal the two of them was getting nowhere, Wizard heals were nothing like the heals a Pirate could use! She looked to the spells in her hand. One card appeared all sorts of fucked up. Torn, blurred, covered in glitches and blocks of black static. She had been avoiding using that spell because using a fucked up spell like that simply… felt dangerous. Like using a sparkthrower that clearly wasn’t maintained, or a busted shield. But at this point, she had no other option. She cast it, a hail mary.
The attack spun itself together, taking the form of a… pillar? A tree? Before she could even tell what the fuck it was, though, it glitched and fell apart. A waste of however many pips she had.
Dread strangled her like handcuffs and an ill-fitting necklace. What the actual shit was that? Are you fucking kidding me? No. NO. I’m not letting my turn be a fucking waste! Her absolute rage cut through whatever bullshit laws of magic forced this entire song and dance. A dagger through tough ropes. To hell with ‘turns’ in the first place! Jane grabbed the Kit_10 and stormed forward. “HEY, MOLD ONE! EAT SHIT!” And she threw the Kit_10 at the Old One with the fury of a thousand fucking suns.
The Old One brought his arms up to try and catch the Kit_10. However its momentum barreled it past his hands, and it crashed into his sternum, his windpipe, his spine. Like a cannonball tearing through a flimsy ship hull. Absolute shock and indignation. How did this child-
His body collapsed under the weight of the Kit_10, and his spine failing. For better and worse (though mostly for better), the Old One was as damned as dead.
Shrub stared at her father’s corpse. Terror ate at her bones. Her stomach churned at the sight of some of of her father’s blue blood trickling out from his mouth. “You…”
“Geeettttttt dunked on!” Jane crowed. “Hey, Flare, how’d I do?”
Flare blinked, getting out of his shocked stupor. “Uh- You did great! Let’s get out of here.” He had no idea how Jane had done… any of that, but good for her! And what the fuck! But mostly good for her! He broke the duel circle apart and picked up the blueprints Shrub had left on a small desk in the corner.
“Meow!” the Kit_10 said, chipper as ever, despite it still sitting on a bloody corpse.
“And you did great too!” Jane said, scooping the Kit_10 in her arms, babytalking it. “I am so proud of you!”
Flare made a portal to the Arcanum. “Let’s get that cleaned up before you cuddle it,” he told Jane with a slight chuckle. He wanted to get out of here. He didn’t do well with corpses. Especially not fresh ones.
“NO,” Shrub screeched, all the grief and hatred bursting from her in a moment. “No, I will not let you get away with this! Don’t you dare think you can get away with this!” She glared at Flare and Jane, her eyes as smoldering hot as her late father’s had been piercing cold. “I am what you two could never be. What neither Arcanum nor Alliance could ever understand. Neither you nor Manticore can stop the Spiral’s true fate!”
Jane opened her mouth to deliver one last scathing clapback, but Flare stood in the way and gently nudged her through the portal. She was grieving, snapping, they should at least give her the mercy of quiet. He closed the portal as soon as the two were through.
“Awh come on, are ya seriously gonna let her have the last word?” Jane asked. “I had a helluva jeer for her, too! I’m already what she is, just some girl with a dead dad!”
Flare took a deep breath. How the hell to explain this. “We cannot take another fight. We’ve got like… what, maybe two hundred HP apiece, was it?”
“And what’re we supposed to do, just let her ramble and diss us like that?”
“We rest. We recover. And who knows, maybe she’ll find us and we get a chance to fight her again.” Those words dropped from his mouth and settled in his gut like lead. He did not want to face her again. He hadn’t wanted to be accomplice for murder. He hadn’t wanted to force Jane into a position where she had to murder. But for better and for worse… it happened anyway. “You should wash yourself and the Kit_10 off. I’ll hand in the blueprints and report to Ione.”
~
A few hours later, after the not-so-simple quest had been turned in, Flare found Jane and the Kit_10 over by Sybil, the sleeping birch of the Arcanum. He still had no idea what its name was. “So, got any ideas of names for it?”
“Meow!” the Kit_10 mewed as Flare approached.
“How about Stabbington the Squidslayer?” Jane asked. “They did help, after all.” She gave it a pat on the head.
Flare sat down next to Jane. “Someone might get mad,” he warned. “Y’know, given that’s literally us admitting our crime. And accomplice.” Technically the Kit_10 was a weapon, not an accomplice, but technicalities.
“So… not a great idea in the slightest. Gotcha…” Jane looked aside. She was used to being proud of her crimes. Having to keep silent about her accomplishment, especially with how kickass it was, felt stifling.
“But… we can make a pun out of it so convoluted nobody will guess?”
“Oh yeah!”
Flare rushed to the Arcanum’s Repository, grabbed a encyclopedia of marine life, and hurried back to Jane. “Let’s see… what puns can we come up with for…” He flipped over to the page for the common squid. “Loligo vulgaris?” He then did a double take. “Wait. Vulgaris? Really?? What the hell, scientists???” What’s so vulgar about a squid?
“What about… Grim Bubbles?” Jane then suggested. “Grim like the grim reaper, and bubbles because sea life?”
Flare gasped and slammed the encyclopedia shut. “That’s GENIUS.”
“Why, thank you!” Jane tried to bow, overdramatic and proud. It just looked like she was folding herself over Grim Bubbles, gloping it in an armless hug. She then straightened up. “I do have a wonderful teacher, after all.”
“That ya do,” Flare admitted, letting himself have a moment of pride too.
“Meow!” Bubbles said. It wheeled around, mechanical zoomies.
“Aww, they like it too!” Jane cooed.
It was rather nice, being able to play with Bubbles. A moment of lightheartedness and peace. Jane didn’t have any regrets today. Flare had a few, but that’s simply to be expected. He could never take something as face value or absolute.
~
This quest happened for better and worse, and the two of them were certain it was ultimately for the better.

The day has come!!
I present to you, my Killjoy oc (not a self insert) - Jane Doe*!
Tumblr media
[separate images will be under the cut]
"Working" for Bli in Battery City, she believes that system can be destroyed only from inside. The Draculoid position allows her to go to the Zones on a regular basis, so she takes this opportunity to help others. Of course, there is not so much people, that trust her. A white suit and a black tie don't make the situation any better, especially when it comes to Killjoys. But those who knew her for a while, could sure tell that there's no better allie than Jane. If you have enough carbons, she will get anything that you want. Will it be a pack of fresh water or some car spare parts, she doesn't care, as long as you pay for it and behave well, she will get it for you.
Sometimes, she also helps some bullet children to escape the city. Or the zones if some wishes. But mostly, she cares about ones that stuck in the Lobby. They're nobody for the city, not even a number in the weekly report in the office.
Her nature is cheerful and funny, she loves hard drinks and dirty jokes. If she ever made any joke towards you, don't be much offended, that means, that she considers you as a friend!
She never takes her mask off, for the sake of own safety, tho she knows every blind spot in the desert. Oh, and about a mask. Many 'joys tell her things like "hey, if you consider yourself as a killjoy then look like one, spit some colour on self" but she believes that the main thing in a desert fashion is to be different, to stand out. And she stands out pretty much. So in her opinion the mission accomplished successfully.
She wants to bring the Bli down as much as any other Killjoy. She knows that there's people out there in the city, that need to be saved, not to fell down with Blis empire. She doesn't want to make it loud. Her war is silent. Her fights are almost invisible. But some stolen docs, clean water for the kids in the desert and food for Lobby rats just for them to stay alive a little bit longer, this is all her fights. And even if one day she's got caught, she will remain loyal to the ideals of freedom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full body and portraits of Janes office hairstyle, killjoy look and fake drac look in order
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ray guns and concept of emblem patch (it's useless tho, she doesn't use any patches, but it's still pretty)
*Jane Doe used when there's a need for a placeholder name in legal cases — and sometimes people use the term Jane Doe to mean "an average, ordinary woman," or an unidentified patient or crime victim.
Anyway, something like this. I am very happy about how she turned out, and if you read till here, then thank you, it means very much to me🤍
Also let me know if you'd like to know more about her!
That's all, have a nice day, 'joys, and keep running⚡⚡

Bridget x fem!oc
Tumblr media
"Hi!" Jennie squeaked out, her hand tightening around Bridgets as they watched Uliana grab their bags and rummage through them, giving Jennie's to Hook to dump onto the ground for cash.
"Hello to you little mouse, how is your friend piggy going?" Bridget stared wide eyed, and Jennie couldn't so much more than wrap her arms around her arm and clutch it to her chest.
"I have no cash! Please don't dump it out...." She trialed off, her eyes trialing down to the ground where the little box laid just under a few papers.
"No!" The hook that replaced James' hand almost hooked into her skin, but she managed to snatch the box and stuff it into her skirt, sitting crouched after rolling to soften her fall.
Dashing back over to Bridget, who stepped back and shielded her, glancing over her shoulder at the two, Hook smirking as he held his hook up to point at Jennie.
"And what might that be eh? Some valuables?" His shark-like eyes followed Jennie as she squeaked and hid her head into Bridget's shoulder, who wrapped her arms around her tighter.
"Stop it Hook, don't let the faggot get too close." Uliana grinned, holding the cash she found in the bags, signalling for him to follow her out of the courtyard.
"Are you okay?" Bridget looked down at Jennie, who looked back wide eyed.
"I should be asking you that, are you alright? I'm sorry I can't protect you-."
"Don't even try it sweets, you're my baby." The princess hugged her tightly, kissing her forehead softly.
"Y-yeah...." Honestly, the blonde couldn't care less about whatever she just said, the box was burning in her pocket as her senses got overwhelmed by Bridget.
"Hey guys, what's up." Ella walked up to them, arching a brow at the leather bag and its contents laying splattered on the ground, Bridget's laying next to it.
"The sky, silly!" Bridget giggled, detaching herself from Jennie to hold onto Ella's hands.
"Nothing much, I'm just gonna- yeah." The girl looked down at her bag, then back at her two friends, who were already wrapped up in talking to each other, and crouched down to get the two bags together again.
"Oh! Thanks Jennie! You're such a sweetheart!" She kissed her cheek, hugging her briefly before she and Ella went away, probably to go do homework in Bridget's dorm.
"I- am." She looked down at her back, shuffling her mary janes closer to each other nervously, the pink rimmed socks seemed so silly now, why would she even think pink would look good on her, she should try Blue, Bridget likes Blue too right? I mean she loves pink but she didn't even blink at her clothes today so-
Jennie shook her head, that was ridiculous, she should change out of these stupid pink things now, why did she spend money on that stupid blouse and skirt.
-
A week later, it was blue, she had found a good light blue vest in the back of her closet, matched with a white skirt and blue socks, her leather mary janes shining in the sunlight once she stepped out, the dark blue ribbon tied around her neck neatly turned into a bow.
"Hi Bridget!" Her wave slowed down as she watched Ella throw an insult to Uliana, guiding Bridget away from them.
She followed them with her eyes, clutching her briefcase, desperately trying to lock eyes with Bridget, her princess.
Her gritted teeth didn't stop her from fleeing once she realised Uliana wasn't distracted anymore, her shoes clicked through the marble halls, rushing to her class, she'll change back during break.
-
"Bridget!" Jennie smiled, her best smile, the only smile she'd ever show Bridget, the others are too ugly, too much teeth, too wide, why would you scrunch your nose? Only Bridget does that right.
"Sweets! Have you met the new transfers?" Jennie had to force herself not to pull a face when she saw they touched her Bridget, she's not yours, shut up.
"I hadn't! How nice to meet other transfers!" Transfer back.
"You transferred too?" The redhead tilted her head, Jennie had to force herself to smile Bridget's smile at them, why would she waste that on some rando's.
"Yeah, I came from Wonderland a bit after Bridget!" The princess in question giggled, grabbing her hand with a smile.
"You missed me so much it's adorable!" Jennie wanted to glare at everyone around her when Bridget hugged her, but at the same time gloat about her kissing her cheek.
"I did...." She 'bashfully' looked down, blushing, more from Bridget being close than actual embarrassment, why would she be embarrassed about the truth? She missed Bridget so much she was going crazy.
"I'm Chloe! You?" Right, the other things.
"I'm Jennie! And who might you be?" Red had been staring with wide eyes for most of the time since she recognised the girl, who had been locked away in the dungeons since forever, looking like she had only been there for a few minutes, and completely crazy.
"Uh- yeah, I'm Red." Why would Bridget ever talk to someone that looked like that.
-
"Jennie?" Why does Ella feel like talking to her, doesn't Bridget give her enough attention for two? Three? Possibly the whole school?
"What's wrong?" I would never say the name of such a dirty obstacle, why would Bridget talk to something like that? So dirty....
"Could you go check up on Bridget for me please? I can't get to her today but she said she isn't feeling too well." Bridget isn't doing well and she told that?! Why would she ever tell her?! Why do I have to hear about it from the cinder girl?
"Of course I will! No worries, I'll go over there with some soup!" She smiled at Ella, who grinned back before leaving her alone to ponder.
"Why would Bridget tell that thing and not me?" She muttered, her pencil digging into her notebook, the point snapping off and flying up a bit, not noticing the two transfers behind her.
Red glanced over at Chloe, who was staring wide eyed at the blonde girl, who was scribbling harshly into her notebook with the left over pencil.
They quickly shook it off when she stood up, stuffing her stuff into her briefcase and turning around to walk away, her blue eyes widening when she noticed them.
She quickly composed herself, standing straight and frowning at them, she didn't feel like trying for some transfers that Bridget barely talks to.
"What." Chloe stepped back a bit, Jennie arching a brow, grimacing slightly.
"Nothing- just wanted to ask you something about Uliana and her gang." Jennie scoffed, leaning back on the table as she stared at the two, unimpressed.
"Is this about the flamingo thing? That was me, I'll deal with it." Red shot Chloe a glare, screaming 'told you so'.
"Right... well they're planning on pranking Bridget back, it won't be very pretty." The switch up was crazy, Jennie's uninterested picking at her nails turned into her rushing off, presumably to Bridget.
-
"Bridget? I got you some soup, heard you weren't doing well!" Jennie smiled, opening the door to her dorm, holding the plate with the soup in one hand and looking over at the sick princess.
"Ella?" The pink haired girl looked up weakly, tilting her head, the cloud of curls moving to cover one side of the pillow.
"No." Fuck! Too cold!
"Oh, I was kinda expecting her to stop by..." Why did she sound so disappointed? Is this why she didn't tell me? Does she like Ella or something?!
"Can I tell you something?" Bridget coughed out once Jennie had helped her sit up, now assisting her in eating her soup, sitting next to her on the bed.
"Mhm, always my princess." The box was burning through her skin, she should just give it to her already, if she kept pushing it back it'll be too late!
"I think I like Ella." Too late.
-
"I'm in here for a reason Red. Now go." The icy glare send her way almost made the 10-year old scream for the guards, but she refrained, inspecting the woman who hadn't changed at all since she'd discovered her.
"Why are you here?"
"Who is your father." Red looked down, and Jennie bit back a smirk, she was living proof someone touched her Bridget, she'll figure it out, she'll be let out soon enough.
"Mom doesn't talk about you-," her eyes widened, " -Who are you?" The woman had fallen silent, her white hair seemed to brighten her skin even more, which already stood out against the black stone.
"I am...." She seemed to think about it, not daring to look away, staring the princess down, her fingers tracing over the folds in her skirt.
"I'm the Queen's, nothing else." Red slowly tilted her head, weird.
-
That soon, happened to be, very soon.
Because now, Jennie was kneeling before the Queen of Hearts, holding her hand to her lips and kissing it softly, staring up at her.
"My Queen." The Queen smirked, pulling her hand back and gesturing for Red to come closer.
"Do you see her, Red? You'll have to find someone like this when you become queen, someone who'll fight for you." The princess slowly nodded, still staring at the bloodied ground of the village that had resisted, and the blood that Jennie had furiously scrubbed at on her face, which had turned into the only scratch she had, in an attempt to get the blood off of her face she just shaved off a bit of her skin.
"Who'll die for you." Red could only watch with wide eyes as her mother held out her hand, the bloodied sword Jennie held got wiped clean on her own palm before she even let it touch the Queen's skin, and she softly placed it down.
"The blood of the grass and ground of the deepest hells can't go up against the comparison of the sun and moon, my love can't touch but won't diminish, won't lessen but can't broaden." The Queen patted her head, tilting it up by her chin.
"Good job sweets." It pained Red to watch Jennie's eyes light up, staring at her mother as if nothing else mattered, which, knowing her, it probably didn't.
"Anything for my queen."
-
"Red! My daughter!" Bridget smiled as she approached her daughter at the ceremony, wrapping her arms around the stiffened girl, who watched with wide eyes as Jennie stalked closer, eyes narrowed and zeroed in on her as if she knew something.
"Where were you?" Her suspicions were waved off by Bridget, who happily giggled and dragged Red away and to her new dorm, which she would be sharing with Chloe.
"Jennie!" Ella called out to the woman, who ignored her, and was planning on walking straight past her, if it wasn't for Bridget stopping and smiling brightly at the fellow queen.
"Our daughters will be sharing a dorm! How exciting is this?!" The way Jennie forced herself to look Ella in the eye gave away her excitement.
"Yes, another Charming." She spat out, Bridget slapping her arm.
"Gods, what happened for you to hate them so!" Jennie couldn't help but smile at her, moving to grab onto her hand, but she had already moved on to grasp Ella's.
“You just have to join us for dinner! It’ll be so fun! We’ll have one final dinner with our families before our daughters leave the nest!” The blonde staggered in her movements when Bridget hadn’t grabbed her hands, but quickly started up again to stand beside the queen with crossed arms.
“Yeah, with the family.” She rolled her eyes, and Bridget sighed, turning and finally grabbing her hands, looking in her eyes.
“Would you mind going back to wonderland to take care of the duties for today? I swear I don’t want you to-!” Jennie had tuned her out, staring blankly at her face.
First I have to share attention with some kid, and after a lifetime of devotion this is what I get? She should be mine, mine to love, mine to cherish, mine to keep, why does she keep teasing me, I just want her to be mine.
Why doesn’t she want to be mine?

Hi! I am Janet Lynn Drake, but I prefer Jan or Jane!
It’s been a wild couple weeks! Not every day you wake up as a 43 year old and realizing you don’t remember the last 20 years!
Things I’ve learned so far:
I got married???
I have a son???
Assassins are involved???
I died????
Welp. I guess there’s a heck of a lot to learn, huh.
This is an rp blog for Janet Drake from DC Comics
Synopsis: Janet Drake has been dead for 4 years. She and her husband was kidnapped, ransomed and poisoned right when they were rescued. She did not survive. 4 years after her death she woke up in a pseudo hospital and quickly realized her need to escape. Now, she needs your help to puzzle back pieces of her life while sharing her own thoughts and feelings with you!
Ask questions! Help Miss Drake in solving some mysteries!
This is my first time making an rp blog so apologies in advance.
House Rules, General Questions, and a Masterlist ahead!
House rules:
Do not repost.
Do not feed into ai.
Keep questions sfw pls
This blog was created to be a chill creative space so please don’t bring in real life tragedies into it
No batcest im begging
I probably won't respond to asks about shipping thoughts in general, sorry! (There will be an exploration about Jan and Jack’s marriage)
Masterlist
Hospital arc (the prologue)
Homeward arc (current arc)
Questions:
Who's Janet Drake?
The stepping stone in the rite of passage of becoming a hero. And yet, not enough to even be a fridged character.
A mother to a boy, but not a hero.
What is the interpretation for her character?
More canon aligned.
How did she die?
Same as canon!
What does she remember last????
She'd love to answer that question herself ;)
answered!
Does she remember death?
Kinda!
Almost!
Yeah!
AND why Jane/Jan?????
Bc the rest of the drakes have shortened nicknames. Theres a precedent and it should be FOLLOWED
Are you including OCs?
Yes. Because to be a full fledged character she needs to have outward influences from before she met Jack and before she had Tim. I want to make her more than just what’s written on her tombstone. She was once also a daughter, a sister, a hero (not in the dc way but more like in the normal way) and a friend. You can’t make her those things if she doesn’t have other people as well.
Where are we in the plot right now?
After escaping her captors, she, Owens, and Z are trying to make it back to Gotham without any of their previous contacts. Meaning theyre starting from the ground up. She has just learned of her death, her husband, and her son.
Bruh, why do this??????
Because Miss Drake deserves better 😭 bestie deserves an actual character and interests so I wanted to see what vibes with her. Also I'm more motivated to practice drawing if I have a reason in mind.
Yes, this is also to help me out in improving my art, haaaaaaaaa
Can I send OOC asks?
Absolutely!

OMGGGGGG Ok, so this might get kind of long because i just have soooo much to say hahah
Main background stuff:
His name is Isaac Magnus, he's gay and trans, and Jonah's younger brother. He's also an End and Web Avatar. He is sort of immortal, he doesn't age and cant die unless he is killed.
Very very close to Jonah growing up, despite Isaac being a girl (at the time), they spent a lot of time together. Isaac looked up to him, and would often follow him around like a lamb as a child. When they were teens, he would often try and copy Jonah’s interests. Jonah was quite protective of him, only person he really cared about. Jonah, in his growing concern about rituals and the fears, ends up giving him a necklace connected to the lonely that stops the entities from being able to see, find or affect them too much. Isaac ends up dying around 1752, when they were 19, due to a housefire. He ends up Becoming, and flee's the place as he doesn't want his family to know what he'd become. He stays with Simon Fairchild for a bit, before moving overseas to live with a few different avatars.
Powers:
Isaac’s powers are similar to the red string of fate soulmate thing. Each relationship has a different colour string, which Isaac can see. He can tell a lot about a relationship from the strings, the state of the relationship, how healthy they are, how strong ect. He does this by seeing how saturated the string look, the stronger the colour the stronger the relationship, the duller the weaker the relationship. Isaac is also able to mess with the strings and can affects peoples relationships through them and be able to kill people through the strings as well. Both indirectly and directly. Family- Blue Friends- Yellow Best/alt Friends- Green Enemies- Red Romantic- Pink
Main series:
He start working in the institute 3 years before Jon becomes Archivist. He works in the library, where he and Martin become fast friends. Both are moved down to the archives due to the fact that Jonah thinks they would be easy to manipulate if needed. [Jonah is unaware of Isaac being both an avatar and his brother, due to the necklace that Jonah gave him before he Became an Avatar.]
SEASON 1- He is constantly clashing with Jon, and spends most of his time planning how to annoy him with Tim. Isaac is closest out of all the archival crew with Tim. Tim see’s Danny in Isaac, and Isaac see’s younger Jonah in Tim. They often spend time messing about in the archives. But he also has good relationships with Martin, and will often time spend hours speaking to each other about books and poetry. And he and Sasha love to gossip together and will meetup after work for drinks every now and again. He’s the one to realise that Martin is trapped in his flat, and goes there to threaten Jane. Martin stays with him in his flat during this time, instead of the institute. During the attack he goes with Sasha to find Elias. When the wall of worms comes upon them, Elias has to drag Isaac out of the institute as he can see Sasha’s string snap and it causes him to start panicking.
SEASON 2- Starts out rough for him, as he very much despises Not!Sasha but Elias had assured him something will get done. (He's lying of course.) He and Not!Sasha don’t get along as Isaac is part Web, and Not!Sasha is annoyed by that. And isaac is pissed that it killed Sasha. Jon, in his growing paranoia starts to suspect that Isaac has something strange going on, and starts stalking him. Its Isaac who ends up telling Jon a little bit of information about the Entities, its not much but it helps pull Jon from the deep-end. Though the damage is already done, Tim is colder to Jon now and Martin is constantly worried about him.
SEASON 3- Whilst Jon is on the run, and Tim is avoiding everyone, and shit is just going down. Elias takes this time to start getting closer to Isaac. He invites him to a party in honour of Jonah, he gives Isaac books, and just slightly manipulates him. Though Jonah does find that he see’s Isaac almost like how he saw his ‘sister’. Isaac does a whole lot of research, before Jon gets back, about the Unknowing. When Jon gets back, he tells everyone what had happened with Not!Sasha. A while later when it comes out that Isaac is an avatar, immediately he looses most of his connections. For a bit when Tim learns that Isaac is an avatar and knew what had happened to Sasha, the two grow very very distant to each other, but Elias mentions something about Isaac wanting to tell the rest and him stopping it that Tim understands what has happened. Isaac stays with Martin and Melanie in the institute during the Unknowing.
SEASON 4- He takes time off when peter first takes over, the loss of Tim and Jon being in a coma, and Elias being in jail just being too much for him. He tries to keep in contact with Martin, but both are in a bad place. Isaac also just doesn't to do with Melanie and Basira unless necessary, both do not like him due to him being an avatar. Isaac is the only one to stick up for Jon after he takes Live Statements, saying that its no different to what Daisy used to do and no one is dying that way. The two form a sort of bond, and stay close at all times, and Isaac tells him who he really is and lets Jon feed on him when he needs too. During the last few episodes, Isaac doesn't know that Jon had gone down to the Panopticon at first and ends follows after him. He and Jonah have a fight, where it comes to light that Isaac is his sibling. They compromise, Isaac wont tell anyone where Jonah is, and Isaac can leave unhurt.
SEASON 5- He has a domain, Jon and Martin end up passing through and he is just so glad they are alright. He immediately rushes over to them and hugs them. He then agrees to come with them to London to stop Jonah after a lot of convincing.

My rewrites for TRE characters in my fanfic
so about 6 months ago I fell into the Au pipeline and it ended up resulting in a bunch of stories that's basically if maximalism was a 7 season long book series. One of those seasons combines tons of characters from different manhwas I read but it's mostly a new interpretation of remarried empress with some Oc's.
Navier
Tumblr media
One major change I made is that Navier isn't the protagonist anymore but I didn't want her to be a cold blooded villain either. If you ever went on history tik tok specifically the tudors and the French revolution, there's a lot of people who romanticize Anne Boleyn to the extremes of villainzing Jane Seymour or babying Marie Antoinette as a sweet coquette girly who was unfairly killed by "savage revolutionaries" or claiming Elizabeth I as a feminist girlboss who only wanted to end her fathers bloodline. These historic women weren't the most awful people and they definitely were victims but that doesn't mean they didn't have noticeable flaws that affected the lives of others. That's the direction I went for my version of Navier, she still cares for her loved ones and makes good decisions but she was raised with a classist mindset, not pouring wine on maids and poor people but viewing them as emotionless husks with only one purpose which explains her apathy to slaves. I also gave Navier a backstory beyond wanting to be a perfect empress which was a relationship with her mother that is inspired by Catherine the greats relationship with her mother, so yeah not very great. Unlike the original she is fully aware of what Heinrey is doing but she barely cares (not much of a change from the original tbh) the goal is that I still want Navier to be a little likeable while also making her complex and realistic as an empress.
Sovieshu
Tumblr media
I didn't give Sovieshu as many changes and for the most part, he's the same as he was in the original: a toxic partner who pushes his faults on other people around him. In this version though instead of becoming cold and cruel to Navier to moment Rashta shows up, the two have already been drifting apart for a while and it only got worse when Navier had a miscarriage a year prior to the story. Sovieshu is more of a cautionary tale of how misogyny is encouraged in boys at a young age, in his youth, Sovieshu had all the love of his mother since his parents struggled to conceive and only had one son. He wanted his father's love more than anything but Osis was about as interested as you'd expect, only wanting his son to be a great Emperor and nothing else, to please him, Sovieshu started to emulate the misogynistic views of the men around him which grew to be his actual beliefs. The only person that kept Sovieshu from turning into his dad was the former empress until she takes her own life, leaving Sovieshu with Osis as his influence. I still want Sovieshu to remain a scumbag but it will be more of a tragedy in how the future generations can never improve if we continue the cycle of abuse.
Rashta
Tumblr media
I think Rashta is the most altered out of all the original characters since she's not even a villainess but rather a sort of anti hero. Her past as a slave is more fleshed out, her childish manner is age regressing to try to gain back her stolen childhood and she doesn't try to befriend Navier after getting the message that Navier wants nothing to do with her. In this version she's the best friend and later love interest of the new protagonist who bottles up her past and feelings to please others so she can keep her cozy life in the palace and that becomes a problem as the lack of care causes Rashta to grow more depressed and even has a few panic attacks. She won't do a good portion of the horrible acts she does in the original since she now had actual friends and because some of her sins are just so contrived to make her hateable, but she still is petty and holds grudges so she doesn't feel too bad when she ruins Nians marriage or snubs Lebetti, she'll even be conflicted since she feels guilty that the slaves on the Rimwell estate are still suffering but she doesnt want to risk being removed as concubine if she tries to call for slaves rights but she does find her voice and will start to push for slaves to be freed mid-way through her term as the empress of the eastern empire. In the end, Rashta does become Empress of a different empire after spending a good 7 years healing from her trauma and getting a good education, she lives her days with her kids and dies at the age of 81
Heinrey
Tumblr media
Hes one the main antagonists here, I kept his love for his wife and family though but it's not an "uwu my queen!" Or really anything puppy like. For Heinrey I wanted to make him a true white lotus and he's has more vibes of a comforting friend with soft mannerisms and tones in voice, he loves Navier dearly because I still think even monsters like him can fall in love but the reason he tortures and kills people who don't side with Navier isn't even because he's that adamant about Naviers honor but rather because if someone were to find out his sadistic nature to those who disagree with him, he can use the "puppy husabnd" excuse to appear as a sadistic sweetheart. It not only scares the shit of his people into respecting him but it also wins him a little sympathy points since "he's just a hopeless romantic" I wanted Heinrey to appear uncanny too, like you know somethings off about him but if you said anything people would just be like "what are you talking about? He just really loves his family." His death is also pretty brutal, naturally Heinrey makes a lot of enemies and during a war arc he is shot down while in bird form leaving him at the mercy of a former maid he pushed over the deep end, she offs him, plucks him, cooks him, and serves him to the remaining family members of Lazlo.
and that's only the main 4, I did almost all of them with the exception of McKenna since he's honestly the only good character thats written well in remarried empress.

Giggling at your and anon wishing instead for OPTIONS for Fanny. I was thinking it's odd that Ms. Austen decided that her crush on Edmund was reciprocated at the end when she could've been given justice of some sort with how she's been looked and talked over.
It feels like she's out of choices but then I suppose she is out of choices in the end. This is a woman who is shy in an era where you gotta put yourself out there to be seen by the society and she's not even on a level in a society for her to be out and noticed by the gentlemen even if she does, rank-wise
Which is why my friend and I (who has no talent whatsoever in writing) been talking about this writing idea; a boarding school AU where all the Austen ladies is in it,
Mind you we were just going by vibe and not accurate research, so we put Elinor Dashwood, and Maria Bertram, Mary Crawford and Lucy Steele, Caroline Bingley are in the same year, being the oldest
Eleanor Tilney, Jane Bennet, Emma, and Jane Fairfax are in the same year below the others already mentioned
Elizabeth and Marianne are in the year below them
Mary Bennet and Harriet
Catherine Morland and Lydia Bennet
(the ages are 13-18)
Anne Elliot is one of the matrons
This is kind of controversial, for me and I'm not really a fan of this concept myself tbh, but it'll be kind of a fanfictiony story like the Bridgerton with the society being a little more lenient (lol?); because it's a mixed boarding school
The plot is basically all the stuff in the Austen og universe but they're not all the same, the ages can be tweaked a bit lol, with some plot tangled with the other stories but they're leading to the same endings like, so.....
Catherine doesn't marry while studying, but she keeps talking about the Tilneys because she has a penpal whom she met in Bath before school started, she didn't realize that said penpal has a sister who studies in the same school
Catherine's really that student that just spent most of her time in the library, not studying per se, reading novels, she often has to be told to focus in class for daydreaming
and then one summer vacation spends the entire break at Northanger Abbey,
Later, after new semester starts, Lydia tells her sister in an offhand remark that Catherine seemed really down and her visit to Northanger seemed to be the reason.
Her studies decline even more when she was upset about the whole Gen Tilney situation and one evening she goes to their dorm matron to ask for advice; that's Anne, and there Catherine finds a crying Lucy Steele who had just been visited by Fanny Dashwood and basically well, verbally harassed by a visiting older sister of Edward Ferrars
My friend was adamant we either pair up Fanny Price with an oc (original character) or with~~ Colonel Fitzwilliam, who, in this AU of ours is an exchange student, same with Mr. Willoughby
Willoughby is an exchange student for a year who got attached to Marianne, and then gradually stops replying to her letters after he left their school. Colonel Brandon is one of the school beneficiaries
One of the classes go for a trip to Lyme with Captain Wentworth as one of the guides and that's where Louisa smacks her head and later fellow poetry club member Benwick falls for her (or not! I'm also not comfortable with this pairing tbh.Louisa had a one-sided crush on Capt Wentworth)
I'm sorry this is sooooo long. My friend and O kept going at it from the side of the female characters only tbh and we didn't quite know where to put Darcy and Bingley. Are they students? Or older students visiting from Oxford? Horse riding enthusiasts and club members, sharing a hobby with Elizabeth? We don't know 😂
Hope you like it! It's not going anywhere because we are both not writers, but it's a good giggling source! :D
You should write this! The only thing that makes a "writer" is writing. Go for it. It sounds fun!

“Y/N Mingyu’s here we gotta go.”
"I'm coming, one second."
Minnie was yelling from the front door of your shared apartment, waiting for you, who always seems to be late everywhere you go. Somehow this time you had been ready for hours, but you just felt that your feet sunk into your floor like quicksand not wanting to acknowledge the reason for hanging out with Mingyu’s crop of friends. Suddenly a small knock came on your door.
“Hey, it’s me. Minnie told me you haven’t left your room in hours. Everything okay?”
You finally removed yourself from the comfort of your room and opened the door, finding Mingyu standing on the other side.
Without words your arms laced around his body and you held him tightly.
“Yeah, it is now.”
You wish you could recall the things you wrote in your journal about meeting him for the first time in college, you both volunteered to help plan a homecoming event for the student council. His shoulders weren’t so broad as they are now, but his smile was exactly the same. Some part of you felt that you had fallen in love with him at first sight, maybe lust. That night was made better because of him, just like it is now. Some strange feeling of home filled inside of you when he’s around.
“Let’s go okay? They’re all waiting for you.”
Minnie was sitting on the step outside the front door of your apartment waiting for the two of you to finish whatever you were doing.
“Mingyu, can you drop me off at Cheol’s on the way home? He was going to come join, but he had a last minute client.”
“Of course, Princess. So by the way are any of you going to tell me why I am chauffeuring you to Wonwoo’s and why we are having a meeting.”
“Well.”
Minnie’s face turned around from the front seat to check if its a good time to give him the rundown to which you just nodded.
“So, it’s kind of interesting actually. Someone took y/n’s journal and is exposing her online, we don’t know which of our friends did it, but we have some sort of an idea of who it was. I got the idea from Seungcheol or Soyeon to ask Minghao if he could help. Luckily this person has only posted once and it was something from ten years ago that she wrote about Joshua. We’re just trying to figure out a way of knowing who it is before we ask any of them directly.”
“Wait, someone took your journal? Why the fuck does anyone care about what you write in your journal.”
“We don’t know, but your super sleuth friends do.”
Tumblr media
Pacing around Wonwoo’s living room as you explain the situation about the journal, was starting to make you feel dizzy. For some reason you just couldn’t sit down. It’s been roughly an hour since you’d gotten here and acquainted yourself with the men you had only met before in passing. Somehow you felt like you’d known them longer, the sense of genuine concern for your now exposed life from semi-strangers was nice, but it left a bad taste in your mouth.
“Guys, they posted again.”
Vernon’s voice came from behind his laptop screen.
“Want me to read this one?”
With a nod and a couple of yesses from your new friends you finally sat down. Minnie’s hand came into yours waiting as patently as you before he started reading outloud.
“Okay, so this one is dated April 25th, no year, but I’m assuming its following the previous post in chronological order.”
“God, please read it.”
Your voice escaped your lips a little harsher than you wanted, but Vernon smiled as if he knew why.
“I’m so ready for highschool to be fucking over. Isn’t it a little cliche for the mean girls trope to be real? I have so little energy left inside of me to waste on patience. And what? I’m supposed to be nice a fuck to a girl who cyberbullies me, but pussies out saying this shit to my face?”
“God.”
Wonwoo’s voice this time, he was sitting to Minnie’s right engaged in what Vernon was reading out loud. The god wasn’t that he couldn’t believe your words, he didn’t want to believe those things happened to you.
“There’s more, should I keep going?”
“Please, yeah.”
“Okay. I really thought Mimi wanted to be my friend, but posting a semi-naked photo of me on fucking Facebook? Who fucking uses facebook? Of course she does, of course she writes love letters, uses facebook, and never leaves the house in her sweatpants. I’ve tried so fucking hard to be nice to her just for everyone else’s sake but I can’t do it anymore. Isn’t it just a little bizarre believing a girl you’ve known for less than a year over a girl you’ve known your entire life?”
You felt yourself crying now, not with sadness but with rage. A reminder of those years she dated Joshua and caused a riff between your friends, all because she was jealous.
“Y/n? Are you alright? I can stop reading if you want.”
“No, it's fine. Just finish and we can talk after, okay?”
You felt all eyes on you now, strangers to friends knowing your deepest secrets that maybe not even Minnie knew, nobody other than you and Mimi.
“The last part is simple, It just says, ‘One more month, y/n. One more month and then you get to spend your summer abroad before college, Fuck if I last a month I’ll kiss principal Ficsher on the mouth at graduation or maybe strip when I’m on my way to get my diploma, everyone’s basically seen my virginal body nude anyway. Fuck this place.”
Someone’s hand was in your face offering you a tissue, Minghao. The quietest of the three, but without words you could see his eyes were saying he felt sorry, not out of pity, just sorry that you went through something like that.
“God, I knew Joshua was a fucking asshole too. There’s only one reason he and Jeonghan could ever get along.”
You watched everyone around you thinking about what to do, waiting for your word on next moves.
“Can we just take a break for the day? Maybe just have some food or coffee, alcohol even?”
“Want to stay here at mine, y/n or go out?”
“Let’s stay here, I can order you guys something if you get some beers or wine?”
Mingyu took your phone from your hand, basically insisting you can’t pay for anything.
“No. I’m buying everything as a thank you for doing her a favor.”
A round of thank you Mingyu’s came from the group.
“Since, daddy warbucks is paying, can you buy all of us personal pizzas and our own bottles of wine? Maybe a dessert too?”
“Can’t you rob your actual boyfriend of his money, Minnie?”
“No, this is way more fun.”
Tumblr media
After a few hours of drinking and getting to know everyone more, you decided to call it a night whispering for everyone to have sweet dreams as Vernon slept peacefully on the couch. Minnie ended up leaving early to spend time with her partner, Minghao and Wonwoo decided to stay up together the rest of the night attempting to hack into this anonymous account. And you, you left the same way you came, with Mingyu.
“Can you stay here tonight?”
You whispered before you unbuckled yourself from his front seat, without fail he pulled into a parking spot and turned his engine off.
“I’m always happy to spend more time with you, let’s go.”

Have you ever explained Daisy’s lore, or really what she does? SHES SO ADORABLE and I wanna know everything about her
You're asking ME about my OC???? OHG BOOOY!!!!!! I'm too excited Where do I start.
Press read more to know more about HER ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ (it's a lot. I'm not exaggerating)
Warning for heavy religious themes and implied racism/discrimination.
Tumblr media
This is Daisyyy and she's my Outlast Trials reagent oc!!! Her legal name is Alice Bell, and her legal birthdate is 12/10/1940 (19 as of now)
She and her parents immigrated from (British) India to America in 1943 to escape the Bengal Famine, going from the west coast to the state of Georgia, where they found a Southern Baptist Community that would be their permanent home, as long as they converted to Southern Baptism.
This is a gated community that's kind of on the outskirts of town, so Daisy grew up sheltered, but she adapted better than her parents did, making friends only with girls (because boys her age were incredibly mean to her) and participating with her church, faith, and community. Her relationship with her parents and older/authority figures was distant, but it was peaceful as she grew up.
Daisy was no pushover around fellow teens, she was loud and funny with her girl friends, and snarky towards boys who were mean, she really liked coming up with sassy remarks. Quarrels hardly went beyond throwing childish insults at eachother. However, tensions against her would rise, she was often blamed for arguments, labeled "rebellious", and lectured to do better, all by older folks. But nonetheless!! She had her best friend Peggy, and her close friend Jane, who was also a child of an immigrant family, coming from China. She didn't belong to the Baptist community, but visited occasionally from the Ranch she worked for, often on horseback. Daisy really liked Jane and the horses, not so much the boys that came with her.
Over the years, Daisy would become really close to Jane, and even though Daisy wasn't allowed to visit the ranch, and Jane wasn't allowed in the community, they often met in the middle throughout the week.
This made her just a little more distant to her church, something that didn't go looked over despite her genuine faith and achievements within it. It wouldn't help that, at some point, while arguing with one of the Ranch boys, her best friend Peggy's anger would boil over and she would slap the boy so hard he fell straight to the ground. Long story short, the father of the Ranch got pissed, and even though Daisy hadn't done anything, she got in trouble.
Gossip flies around fast in a small community, and with the strain on everything that wasn't her friends, Daisy was encouraged to go into the city by the Pastor. She could be like a missionary, spreading the word of God and their small community, just on a smaller scale. She was told it would strengthen her faith, and her relationship with God, since she had been so "disobedient". Daisy was almost 19 at this point, and was expected to do this by herself.
Daisy was so ashamed that she couldn't bring herself to say goodbye to her friends or parents, leaving just a letter behind. She wanted to say goodbye to Jane, but on the day she packed, Jane didn't show up.
In the city, it didn't take long for Daisy to hear about a charity event, thinking it was a good place to meet nice people, she'd go to the address listed on the posters. And that's how she gets to the Sinyala Facility!! ^_^
Daisy has never been in that kind of environment OBVIOUSLY but she adapts in her own way, even keeping her wits. Through the mansion and through the few trials she does, her expertise is in hiding. Daisy is much smaller than the average girl her age, making it easy to get through cramped spaces or hide in unconventional spots. She is hardly a team player though, she is willing to help people where she can, mostly through finding medicine, or distracting ex-pops with bottles or other red herrings, but she hardly participates in completing the tasks given. She refuses to fetch keys out of corpses or deliberately hurt the victims (i.e. Snitch) she isn't strong or athletic, so she avoids detection at all costs. Better at finding keys on a pedestal and tinkering with the generators.
In her first couple trials, she'd be caught twice. First time, she was running in the dark and bumped into a small grunt, she was able to get away because she had scared the grunt, but when the adrenaline washed away she realized her face had been cut up, likely from that encounter. Shes actually pretty okay about it, and it leaves a fork-like scar on her face. The second time, she'd be caught by Coyle. In this scene he'd grab her by her hair, pulling and then throwing her against the floor, and as he goes to pull her up from her hair again, she grabs a bottle, first smashing it into his head, and since he didn't let go, then stabbing the remains of it into his ribs, leaving it there as he drops her. That's the first but not the last time she'll barely escape him.
After she's done with those trials, she moves onto Gooseberrys trials, onto Cleanse The Orphans. I go into real detail abt this one its IMPORTANT. She does this trial with 3 others like she always has, but one of them is important her name is Mincemeat and SHE'S IMPORTANT!!! Daisy actually does decently well early into the trial, and although she's not fond of the Gorey Nuns, she prevails. She feels bad for taking a cross necklace from one of them, but now she has one. She's able to sneak around to radios, and she can work better as a teammate with the reels.
The problem is when they get to the chapel, Mincemeat has done this before and it shows in the b-line she makes to break the jukebox, and soon the jesus victim comes forward. Daisy is taken aback, but her first thought is to try and save him. That's what the keys are for. She convinces the other two reagents that's what they have to do, is free him. Mincemeat encourages Daisy to go into the basement with her to get the generators taken care of, and the other two can find keys.
As they finish up down there, Mincemeat tells her to stay until she makes sure it's safe upstairs. Daisy is hesitant but agrees, and finds one of the few rooms with light in that basement. And then the screaming starts, and all she can do is curl up and cover her ears until it fizzles out, and Mincemeat comes to get her.
She tells her not to look as they come up, but Daisy looks anyways and it's absolutely ungodly. She starts to go catatonic and before Mince can tell the other reagents to wait, one of them presses the button on the podium. It's raining blood now, it's great. One of the reagents rush to the doors to get out of the chapel, when Gooseberry comes through and immediately drills a hole through their eye and head, killing them instantly. The three take this time to rush past, with Mince trying to guide Daisy as best she can. In their rush to the shuttle, the other reagent somehow gets sliced up, he's still running but he's bleeding profusely. Ex-pops are still pursuing them, so once they reach the shuttles, Mince would shove Daisy into it.
Now they're safe, but it's far from calm. Daisy is sobbing while she's down on the ground, Mince tries to say sorry and pick her up but she just screams and crawls away. She doesn't know what to do, but the other reagent begs her to get into her seat because he's bleeding out. Daisy takes a moment, but gets into the seat to be restrained and brought to evaluation.
After she's brought back to the sleeproom, Daisy goes to her room, tears off the night vision goggles from her head, and refuses to participate in trials and any social activities. Through Dorris' lore we know it's possible to stay out of trials indefinitely, thanks to people on the inside. This is also the case for Daisy, though she doesn't know it.
Daisy goes into a far more reserved and "childish" state after these events, and stays in her room to draw, read, make her own clothes out of blanket or cloth scrap, and pray. Another thing she did was try her best to keep track of the days. She did this by paying attention to the guards and their shifts. This is all she did for awhile until Mince became her friend, and later another reagent named Soro. This is actually the time where she would introduce herself as Daisy.
She isnt a preachy type, but she really sinks herself into her faith, and would mention to Mince how she believes that this facility is something prompted by God as a sort of "Preview" into what hell is, and what awaits for sinners. It's a test of faith for her. She thinks as long as she keeps faith, she can escape this place one way or another.
Her character and story DOES develop past this but I'm debating whether or not I wanna make comics for her sooooo,
TLDR: Daisy was raised southern baptist and got reeeally traumatized after Cleanse The Orphans and now she's an even more timid girl with a tight bible belt. She has at least two friends though YIPPEEEAAAA
