Gratitude is a specific medicine to cure our heart and mind wounded by the three poisons (greed, anger, and ignorance).

From a dharma talk given online. During the Joya-e (New Year’s) celebration, Jodo Shinshu Buddhists ring the temple bell 108 times. This is the number of humankind’s passions, or attachments, which originate suffering. In ringing the bell, practitioners give thanks to Amida Buddha and all living beings who’ve assisted and supported them throughout the year.

What a lovely practice it is to spend our New Year’s in gratitude for others who’ve supported and loved us throughout the year. We all like to make New Year’s resolutions, and it’s easy to become self-centered in the process. Dear Tumblr, I hope you remember that you are one of many, part of a community, however you name it—sangha, church, family—that loves you and supports you. Though we may be lonely, we are never truly alone.

Thank you to everyone who interacted with my blogs this year; know I am grateful for your support and friendship, and will be praying for you in the coming year.
