(TTRPG) Freelancing Resources
Similar to my D&D Writing Resources post, here are some amazing resources for people who are (aspiring to) freelance (in the TTRPG industry).
Doing The Work
There are three interviews with Carlos Luna that I 100% recommend:
1) "Artwork is 365 degrees" - Adventuring Academy
2) "Pass the Vibe Check" - Three Black Halflings
3) Episode 94 - Creative Block
In all 3 of these interviews Carlos gives easy to remember, actionable advice on how to approach freelancing that can be applied to most industries (though references tend to be TTRPG specific). Following this advice helped me so much in 2022.
If you still have a Twitter, you should also go follow @AJoyce_Rivera, who regularly shares freelancing advice and wrote advice on becoming a freelancer and experience & compensation in the TTRPG industry.
And for people who think "This is too much content to consume" let me TL;DR 1) Create to spec 2) Meet your deadlines 3) Communicate clearly and promptly 4) Build up to doing the Hard Work every day TTRPGs is a more accessible industry than ever. Don't sleep on these resources.
Getting The Work
For freelancers looking to enter the (American) Convention Circuit this year for work opportunities, go watch and subscribe to @bananachangames's YouTube channel. Videos I recommend are:
Convention Tips: https://youtu.be/ba2ODK0lpjU
Con Expectations: https://youtu.be/G5Hw5y2NC08
(Also the Big Bad Con vlogs)
Banana gives lots of practical advice and explanations of how the (American) convention circuit works. If you're looking to start going to conventions to meet industry professionals, watch these videos and take notes!

People who work in a more corporate setting: how ethical is it for Human Resources to send out a questionnaire to workers who are not contracted and are in fact freelance, that is a self-evaluation questionnarie but also an evaluation of all of your colleagues, INCLUDING your superiors, and the questionnaire in question is not anonymous, and in fact not only do you have to put your email in, you have to put your name? Like, please tell me I am not fucking insane and this is extremely unethical and prone to create a horrific work environment

god. every time i watch tss/tps i forget they use the valiant to filter the air at one point. like 10 and martha look excited about it (probably masking INCREDIBLY hard holyshit. martha having to deal with unit using it as a weapon in the sky to fight back after she had to deal with a YEAR (that no one else at unit remembers!!!) of seeing it in the sky while it was being used to destroy everything and everyone around her.) and like. 10's made immediately aware that unit repurposed it for good so he understands what's happening but like. jack harkness. who is not usually working directly with unit. who is probably trying to figure out what the hell is going on while trying to keep his team safe bc he can come back from the poison so he's the only one out there. looking up. seeing the fucking valiant with NO OTHER EXPLANATION as to why the hell it's there. like. one of the (many) times you kinda wish dw was more than pg bc i would've killed to just have like. a reference to him or his reaction. martha getting a text from him that's just "WHAT THE FUCK"
jack harkness deserves to be able to drop the one f-bomb a season of a pg13 doctor who. he’s literally perfect for it. and goddd. jack and martha friendship that exists in my mind forever. i know they’re in contact, i know this. if only because Who Else can they talk to about half of this stuff. off-screen in my mind martha gets to call jack when everything is done, and he’s glad the poison is all gone, assumes the doctor did A Thing, but he’d really like some clarification on the valiant and also. maybe clone martha called him at some point to try and lure him out and eliminate him as a threat or something. which would be a fun thing for the two of them to deal with!
imagining martha on the phone with him explaining that the valiant is for unit’s use now. (in a way that’s like. she is trying to tell herself this is Fine, too.) explaining that she just died in her own arms in a way, and she has no idea how to process that. i think they should get to hang out and decompress together, i really do.

Please read if you or someone you know could use a proofreader/editor!
So y’all would have no reason to know this, but I did graduate college with a Bachelor’s in Journalism. My current job pays me minimum wage and my puppy (Chex Mix) is currently having some health problems (nothing serious, just expensive!) so I’m offering proofreading for $20-$25 depending on word count. If you are a college student looking for someone to proofread essays, a writer looking for advice on the cheap, etc, message me with a request and we can exchange information. Reblogging to help me get traction on this is also appreciated!
XOXO,

A rant for freelance writers
My fellow writers, you are being grossly underpaid. I’ve been freelance writing intermittently for over a decade, and during that time the rate for freelance writing has dropped. Yes, you read that correctly. Dropped.
I’ve returned to freelance writing during the pandemic because I need the schedule flexibility and work from home perks (thank you, health issues). I was offered a role that paid $10 per article. Yes. $10. I have over a decade of experience and have worked with some pretty big company names, and yet I was offered the same rate I was given as a new college grad with literally no experience a decade ago - and that was considered painfully low back then. In 2013 I made $10/article, but by 2014 I was making $50-$75/article. By 2015 I was averaging $100 per assignment.
Needless to say, I declined the $10 role.
Content farming websites like Comic Book Resources, ScreenRant - basically every publication under Valnet, amongst others - are taking advantage of you. Here are the rates I was told for an entertainment writer role at CBR. Again. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and have a Master’s degree.  “The compensation rates for this position are based on a combination of rates for pay-per-post (PPP) and pay-per-view (PPV).  PPV rates are applied after every 1,000 views. News: $10 ($10 PPP) + $0.33 per 1k views Flash News: $5 ($5 PPP) + $0.25 per 1k views”  When pressed for the average views per article, I was told anywhere between 2,000 to 200,000. Which means you can be earning as little as $10.66 per article, while $76/per is the top end. I made $75/article in 2014 with just over a year of experience. The math ain’t mathing.  This issue isn’t exclusive to Valnet, either. Time and time again I’m seeing roles for writers listed at minimum wage. Some of the higher paying ones are still only offering $25 an hour regardless of experience level. Yet they receive hundreds, if not thousands of applicants.
We can argue that this is just another symptom of wage stagnation, inflation, the recession we’re in that may or may not be manufactured. But, I worry that the rise of AI has led to the devaluation of the writer, much as it threatens the digital artist. Why pay actual humans what an AI will do for free? Just plug in the topic and some old articles and watch as your content is repurposed into something fresh. No one will be able to tell.
In the age of AI everything, the economy has come to undervalue good writers. Our creativity. Our humanity.
I do not have a solution here, except to suggest that folks fucking stop working for Valnet because they’re exploitative. Even then, I don’t hold it against you if you do work for them. As I sit here filling out applications for roles that pay far less than my ending wage at my last position, I’m forced to swallow my pride simply because times are tough. Jobs are harder to come by, even though ‘everyone is hiring’. The longterm effects of COVID are real, and limiting.  I have no solution, but I want you all to know that you deserve better. Your time and expertise have value. Writing is hard.
You deserve fair compensation.

 WRITER’S FORUM  WRITER’S UNION
WEBSITES HELPFUL TO WRITERS This is a series of posts which, I think, will be beneficial to writers. But first, I would like to include my usual warning about using websites. Whenever you check a website you are, in my opinion and I talk from experience, being put on a list for sale. So, expect the possibility of being bombarded by ads from companies you, perhaps, have…

i wish freelancing wasn't the -other option-. Cause like I already have issues with marketing myself, networking, putting myself out there, etc. All skills that are needed to get a salary job so that I don't have to do all of that after.
So i struggle with all of them, and thus also struggle to find a stable salary job...the other option is to do all of it forever and way more often and intensely?
the benefits of being a freelancer that many talk about, specially for asd folk like myself, just don't seem to be an actual benefit...
