Is the rise in Vitamin D deficiency due to us using too much sun screen? Well, seemingly there is no concrete evidence either way. The facts are that 1. direct UVB rays stimulate the production of vitamin D in our skin 2. that direct sunlight can cause skin cancer 3. that using a sunscreen, in particular a high factor broad spectrum sun screen, protects the skin from UVB rays. The body makes around 90% of the Vitamin D it needs, the other 10% of your Vitamin D intake comes from food. If you don’t get a lot of sunlight, or if you usually stay covered up, you should use a quality Vitamin D supplement. What is the importance of vitamin D? 1. Bone development 2. Helps prevent depression 3. Protects against cancer 4. Reduces blood pressure 5. Prevents heart disease, stroke and artery disease 6. Reduces risk of diabetes 7. Boosts the immune system 8. It plays a major roles in the life cycle of human cells. Experts say that just 10 minutes of sunlight on your skin is enough to avoid Vitamin D deficiency. So get outside when you can. I guess it stands to reason that if vitamin D is stimulated by UV rays then blocking them with sunscreen will reduce vitamin D production. However, we must remember that even SPF 50 sunscreen only stops 98% of the rays, 2% are still getting through. You only need to be out in the sun 10 minutes a day without sunscreen to produce the recommended amount of vitamin D. So, if you are out for any length of time with factor 50 sunscreen it is probably enough, but not proven. The fact that UVB rays cause cancer makes me inclined to block the rays and hope enough are still getting through and concentrate on supplementing vitamin D in our diets. It is particularly important to supplement vitamin D in young children as it aids their growing bones. A question I’m asked a lot RECYCLING KNOW-HOW: YOUR SERUM BOTTLES We are working on every part of our packaging being recyclable or reusable and as eco-friendly as possible. For example, we have already moved many of our products from boxes to recyclable paper wraps and have minimised the use of paper wherever possible. We currently have projects on the go through which we are researching even more exciting packaging solutions. As our company grows and the industry itself provides more solutions to the issues of plastic and waste, we look forward to leading the way in even more environmentally friendly packaging. This image shows a breakdown of your Super Greens packaging. Taking apart and separating your packaging into its individual parts means that it can be more easily recycled. In this case, your Super Greens has been broken down into the following pieces: 🌴 Bottle - made of glass, widely recycled 🌴 Pipette - made of glass, widely recycled 🌴 Lid - made of plastic, widely recycled 🌴 Rubber bulb - made of silicone, can be recycled where facilities exist While 90% of us recycle kitchen waste, 50% of Brits don’t recycle bathroom waste, such as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel bottles, simply because it’s inconvenient, meaning 2.7 billion plastic bottles hit landfill every year By taking a few easy steps to separate your product packaging, you can lessen the amount of waste which is sent to landfill, and help towards making the environment cleaner and greener! We always advise to check with your local council as to what is recyclable in your specific area. Keep an eye out for more recycling facts and tips soon! #freefromnasties #supergreens #recycling #tropicskincare #veganbeauty (at Bedford, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom)

How should I apply sunscreen? Studies have found that most people apply less than half of the amount required to provide the level of protection indicated on the packaging. Areas such as the back and sides of the neck, temples and ears are commonly missed, so you need to apply it generously and be careful not to miss patches. When using lotions, as the bare minimum you should to apply at least six full teaspoons (approximately 36 grams) to cover the body of an average adult, which is more than half a teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm and the face/neck (including ears), and just over one teaspoon to each leg, front of body and back of body. This is the amount used when products are tested for their SPF (it equates to 2 mg /cm²). Applying less will reduce the protection to a higher degree than is proportionate – for example, only applying half the required amount can actually reduce the protection by as much as two-thirds. The overall message in terms of sunscreen use is “more is better.” It is also easy to forget to reapply sunscreen as often as necessary. You can apply Tropics mineral sunscreen directly before going out in the sun, but you need to wait 15-30 minutes if using a chemical sunscreen. Reapply it at least every 2 hours, and immediately after swimming, perspiring and towel drying or if it has rubbed off. ‘Water resistance’ is tested by the ability of a sunscreen to retain its sun protection properties following two 20 minute intervals (40 minutes total) of moderate activity in water. However, up to 85 percent of a product can be removed by towel drying, so you should reapply after swimming, sweating, or any other vigorous or abrasive activity. Another important factor is the reflection of the sun’s rays, which can greatly increase the power of the radiation, by the following percentages: snow up to 85% increase, sand up to 17% increase, water up to 5% increase. #mineralsunscreen #veganbeauty #freefrom #freefromnasties #greenrevolution #sunscreenapplication (at Bedford, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom)
