What did fans in Japan say about Snake?
Hey Anon !
Well, this is a few months old but basically...
1) our!Ciel ordered his servants to return back to him, so some fans said it was foreshadowing that at least one of the servants will not return.
2) Since Mey was not hurt and Bard was hurt but managed to survive thanks to blood transfusions, then they thought Yana-sensei would probably direct the arc with Finny and Snake in yet another direction for the climax.
Additionally, Finny is stronger than Snake and Snake is the one who has a connection to Doll, whom readers knew was a bizarre doll, so it led Japanese fans to think that Snake might either :
Die despite receiving a blood transfusion
Die but then become a bizarre doll alongside Doll and Joker
I guess the latest chapter won't be enough to have an answer about Snake's death being definite or not, so we'll just have to see whether Japanese fans were right about Snake becoming another bizarre doll.
Would Yana choose this twist ? Maybe. Real!Ciel's side with UT certainly has the power to turn him into a BD. Would it be fucked up for our!Ciel and his household (minus Seb) to face their former fellow ? Absolutely, which is also why I tend to think the BD!Snake is likelier than Snake "simply" dying.
Finally, like @frederickabberline pointed out, if Snake (whom our!Ciel once called his pet) is paralleling Pluto from the first anime...
then it's also likely Mey Finny and Bard will team up to put BD!Snake to rest later. </3
I hope it answers your question, have a good weekend Anon. :3

nJFSH honestly wouldnt it be such a semi-better reveal if UT was actually just wanting to find a way to lengthen human life spans of the time period (since the life expectancy then was Bad)
it’d at least be a better reason than for the sole purpose of trying to revive claudia or vincent or w/e in my hashtag honest onion
#frederickabberline#im extremely salty abt fanon interpretation of UT wanting to revive someone because he had Romantic Feelings For Them#pls.....take ur exhausted cliches and stick them in ur pocket I Do Not#the only sorta-exception is if it's because they were close friends but even still :/#the resurrecting someone only to (inevitably) have it end horribly is still a really overdone cliche that just makes me Upset

Agreed! I think Claudia loved it, so UT might have participated in a few hunting sessions without necessarily fully appreciating the activity (as he said “like the pitiful rabbits”) and Frances just probably loves hunting as well.
And good point about this panel being possible foreshadowing:
Actually, for a few years now I’ve believed that UT really was Vincent’s predecessor as Earl Phantomhive, meaning he was Claudia’s husband.
Ch 107.5 was especially strong when it comes to this symbolism (both of them sitting on the same chair in the cover and then Vincent replacing UT on that chair when UT gave him his rosette). The fact UT knows perfectly well how hunting goes and that he made a perfect impression as Weston’s Principal amongst many nobles add to the idea that he definitely acted as “Earl Phantomhive”, the Watchdog’s husband for several years.
I know some fans in the tags recently said Claudia and Cedric weren’t married (and that Vincent and Frances were bastards, born out of wedlock) because “Claudia should have been the one taking his last name if they had been”, but that’s actually wrong !
@tothelasthoursofmylife provided here some historical western examples with women in similar situations to Claudia (an heiress making her husband take on her last name, so the family line would keep on existing). Additionally, @frederickabberline also previously made a post explaining under which circumstances noble women could inherit anything.
In other words, Claudia and UT/Cedric were married, UT was the previous Earl Phantomhive and that’s why it’s not surprising that UT would compare his fight against Seb, Ronald and Grell to hunting. As you said, the sighting of Claudia’s locket on his shoulder as he becomes “the hunter” in that hunting game is pretty symbolic, since Claudia herself was the Watchdog and (I believe) he was the Watchdog’s husband (so a hunter fits him). :))
Thanks for your thoughts!
I was rereading a few analyses by Japanese fans, to answer some questions in private and one of them pointed out that when we met Frances in ch14, as well as when we discovered UT was a Shinigami on the Campania, both spoke about "hunting".
Considering the UT = Cedric theory, as well as Yana saying that Frances takes a lot after her dad, it's indeed a nice parallel for both introductions. xD Hehe.

Did Othello cause Undertaker’s second (successful) escape attempt?
I’ve talked about the theory that UT discovered a terrible secret about the grim reaper dispatch, leading to his desertion, here.
There's also really cool post discussing it by @frederickabberline and @midnight-in-town - here!
Anyway, we know from recent chapters that Undertaker and Othello share a history. Othello told Grell that they entered the dispatch around the same time, and that while Undertaker was a markedly different man - stoic, dedicated to reaping, detached (going only by his assigned number rather than his name) - they were acquainted with each other enough to recognise each other decades later.
People have been talking about the possible connection between Othello and Undertaker for a while, especially the ‘50 years prior’ event when Undertaker successfully deserted < like @rationalkuroshitsuji here!
Othello last entered the human world fifty years ago - around the same time UT defected.
Undertaker did state that members of the forensics division rarely leave their offices...
However, what are the chances that the very next time Othello smells the roses is to do with Undertaker as well?
Methinks those fifty years may not have been spent in seclusion by choice, but as punishment for causing Undertaker to succeed in his second escape attempt.
Othello being ordered to personally deal with what he confirmed to be Undertaker feels less like ‘you knew the guy, right? go talk to him’ than ‘you have a chance to fix your mistake and make it up to us, get out there’.
Othello’s words seem to suggest this. He refers to 'the racket’ making it impossible for him to work in peace - like a nagging/commanding superior (one that Othello has referenced before), who won’t let Othello off the hook as long as Undertaker continues to disrupt and damage the dispatch’s reputation, authority and existence.
Othello is implying that he can’t get peace until Undertaker is apprehended when it shouldn’t really concern him - unless he had something to do with UT escaping.
Othello also displays knowledge of Undertaker’s escape attempt twenty years before, including the damage he caused to HQ in the process.
But what was Undertaker doing in that twenty-year gap? Why did it take that long for him to try again?
@shinigami-mistress made a very interesting observation that Undertaker’s comment about not wanting to be dissected on Othello’s lab table may actually be him speaking from experience. It would explain the scars he didn’t have while he was ‘the star grim reaper’, but has somehow acquired since, as discussed here by @thedarkestcrow.
And - it would also give meaning to Undertaker’s very hostile reply to Othello accusing him of madness. Othello’s heavy, displeased expression indicates he knows very well what actions on his part that Undertaker is referring to.
Othello wasn’t exactly shy about saying how he’d love to open Undertaker up. He also admitted to Grell that people would say he was the sort of person to attempt something as crazy as resurrecting the dead, not Undertaker.
Undertaker gave quite a strained smile in response to Othello’s ‘screws loose’ accusation, too. As if he’s holding back anger.
What if Undertaker already has experience of Othello’s madness, and the goings-on within the reclusive, scarcely-seen world of the forensics division.
Perhaps seventy years ago, he was taken into the custody of the forensics division and made their test subject.
To an immortal (?) grim reaper, twenty years wouldn’t be such a long time. Hell, Undertaker looks at Frances Midford and still sees her as a little girl he saw ‘just yesterday’.
This is where the Dispatch Conspiracy Theory comes in (sorry it took so long!).
Perhaps dissenting grim reapers like himself are not imprisoned, but rather taken away and experimented on or altered in some way to make them docile and obedient again? Even worse, what if grim reapers never actually ‘retire’ but are instead killed and used for grim reaper science?
I see two opportunities for Othello to screw up and accidentally cause Undertaker’s second escape attempt to succeed.
After twenty years as a trapped guinea pig, Undertaker made his move again, and Othello was unable to stop him.
Othello released Undertaker, assuring the powers that be that he was no longer a problem, and Undertaker escaped after after laying low for a while.
In either scenario, Othello would take the blame for not properly dealing with Undertaker. He was meant to ‘fix’ a wayward afterlife citizen, but ended up not only failing that but allowing him to escape - that’s worth a fifty-year imposed quarantine, at least.
So now, Othello has been released into the human world on the condition that he finally do what he was supposed to all those years ago.
At least that’s what I think.
Apologies for tagging a lot of people in this! ^^;;

⏺CHAPTER 160: WELCOME TO WHITECHAPEL⏺ Peter and John were in a very furious mood when Fred Abberline came in the Leman Street Police Station. Fred: What happens sirs? Peter: The new forensic is in! John: Better you fire him sir! Fred: Why? Is it a woman? Is he Irish? Peter & John: No! He's worse than that!! Fred: Let's see... Fred came to the forensic room, the new doctor was escorted by Michael and Joe. Fred: Hello, I'm the boss here. He turned towards him, he seemed a criminal or a very lower class man. Byron: Hi, I'm Byron Giaskin and if you accept me here, I'll try my best! Fred: mmm.... A gypsy - he thought - Ok, I agree to have you as far as I see your references. I'm Fred Abberline, welcome to Whitechapel. Peter y Joe: No!! Es todavía peor!! Fred: Voy a ver. Soy Fred Abberline. Cedric being a pseudonym would honestly make the most sense in general, since if he’s trying to avoid the Dispatch, he probably wouldn’t want to give his real name out to everyone. His real name has to be in their paperwork somewhere, even if he only ever went by his number while he was with them. Why make it easier to potentially track him down?
If he was Judas, though, even if demons didn’t have anything to do with the betrayal, he still might know more about them than your average reaper. Who knows what kind of details you might pick up hanging around the son of God. XD
I hadn’t considered that angle of his true identity before, but now after listening to you lay it all out I kind of really want this, because it would be so interesting. Especially if Will has to deal with the implications. It would certainly be more interesting than what’s happening now. I was waiting out the flashback before I started reading again. Nothing against Yana’s writing, but this hasn’t been the most exciting arc.
I fell asleep before you started theoryposting, but I think Undertaker being Judas would fit really well with a lot of the symbolism we've been given so far. And also would be more interesting than him just being Cedric.
It fits so well!!! And I really love the context it could provide for his characterisation and motivations, like the way it would ground his behaviour ufm
It even explains why he would be so avoidant of names and his own name specifically, because it's become culturally synonymous with "traitor", and it would totally change the way people act towards him if they knew, which he'd likely hate
And Judas may even have been possessed by a demon in order to make him betray Jesus, which gives some fascinating flavour to the way he interacts with Seb, like the level of his scorn and the cryptic stuff he says
And the way this could interact with anime! Will's obvious faith/trust in him, or the way I think Will will probably have to go out on a limb to trust UT in the manga too if it develops that he needs UT's help against whatever major plot is going on with the upcoming war/whatever john brown is/whatever the higher-ups' real motives are, is also fantastic to me personally. The concept of this oh so devoted and rule-abiding man, who's built his entire afterlife around the potential of his redemption via faith and loyalty to Dispatch, deciding wilfully to trust literal Judas Iscariot? Delicious
Like he would be the legendary deserter, literally,
