Random thought that I’m probably not articulating well, and maybe I’m deeping it too much, but I do find it a little alarming how much fanart I see that captures these characters’ beauty in the form of what is, essentially, Instagram/social media standard of beauty. Don’t get me wrong, everyone has the creative freedom to create what they want to create, and I can’t exactly say shit because I can barely draw a stick figure, but I’ve seen so many depictions of ACOTAR characters where they look like they’re pumped full of lip filler and other shit, where it looks like they have an Instagram filter on them, where there’s almost an uncanny look to them, and I find it interesting and, quite frankly, a little worrying, that that’s what so many people equate these characters’ stunning beauty to, as if they could not be beautiful any other way. We know that they’re supposed to have an ethereal, otherworldly beauty, because they’re ethereal, otherworldly beings, but it’s almost as if people have forgotten that there is beauty in things like freckles, and dimples, and different body types, and natural features and characteristics that make us who we are. It’s interesting that so many people translate that beauty into the carbon copy social media influencer standard of beauty, as if natural beauty isn’t quite enough. This isn’t everyone, of course — I’ve seen so much beautiful fanart that captures the beauty of these characters without turning them into instagram models. But there’s also a scary amount that does exactly that — maybe from younger members of the fandom? I don’t know. And I guess that has me wondering…is that all many people see beauty as now? Have we stopped appreciating the natural things about people that make them who they are? 🤔

Veilguard Solas has a more realistic complexion, I suppose, but I will always love my weird white boy peachy with subtle signs of aging DAI Solas
Tumblr media
Veilguard Solas is hot in the way an immortal vampire is hot. Eating collagen daily and casting an airbrush instagram filter spell on him at all times. Like yes I want to touch Veilguard’s smooth egg man, but I want to discover the freckles on DAI Solas’s nose and see the faint semi-permanent lines around his mouth.

Becca asked me nearly a year ago, ssssh!, to write something inspired by the first clip in this tiktok for Mel and Isaac. Short, quick, and fun. Isaac’s a goner from the day he met her. This is super cheesy but I like it anyway. I love them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Why’d you put on a filter?”
“Huh?” Mel’s thumbs stilled on her phone and she looked up at Isaac. The golden light bathing the streets of downtown Beacon Hills made her squint one eye to battle the overexposure. Adding in the wrinkle to her nose, Isaac could’ve died on the spot being in such close proximity to the cuteness. “What d’you mean?”
He used his chin to motion to her phone. “The picture you just posted. You put a filter on it.” The crowds from the emptying movie theater moved around them. He took a step closer to her, freeing up space on the sidewalk. That was the second reason, anyway.
“What? No I didn’t. I never put a filter on my pics.” Her thumbs moved across the screen, quickly adding a caption to the picture still on display before posting. Chimes went off seconds later indicating a shower of likes and comments. Barely giving her screen a glance she shoved it into her pocket and looked up at him. He always seemed to have her full attention. “This golden hour light is as close as I’ll ever get to using one.” She shrugged. “Instagram can get really fake, I don’t like adding to it.”
“It has to be one,” he insisted. “I mean, look at your eyelashes.” Anyone else would have laughed at his lame attempts at conversation (or, rather, to keep conversation) but not her. She took anything he talked about seriously, as if everything he said was important. And the way she looked up at him, round electric blue eyes beneath a long, thick rim of black, as if she were riveted? He’d do anything to keep her looking at him like that. Case in point: a dumb conversation that didn’t need to happen but he made happen if only to squeeze more time with her. “They can’t actually be like that. I mean, are they real?”
“They grow out my face like this.”
“If you say so.”
She put her hands on her hips, squinting up at him while lifting up on her toes. “Are yours real?”
“Of course they are.”
“They’re really long. it’s almost unfair. Guys should’ve had eyelashes that long. It should be against the law.”
He shrugged. Yeah, this was really dumb. But he’d bend over backwards doing just about anything dumb for her. Because she made him feel not-so-dumb and, after living with his father for so long, it was nice being silly without being punished for it. “Don’t know what to tell you.”
“Wait, so yours can be real but mine can’t? That’s kinda rude.” Even as she admonished him, she cracked a smile so wide sunbeams may as well have embedded themselves into her teeth with the way it sparkled. And he, somehow, was the lucky loser who go to bask in her spotlight.
Isaac held up his hands. “I mean, girls have the help with makeup and stuff right?”
“I can prove it. Look.”
His breath rushed out all at once, not from the jarring scratching of the brick against his back when she pushed him into it but from the heat sinking into his skin from her hand on his chest. Her smile faded, just slightly, as her eyes closed and she tilted her face up towards him, giving himself an up close and personal view of her gorgeous face. And her lashes, too.
Ok, this was torture. But what did he expect goading her with such a dumb argument? His fingers twitched and he curled them into his palms, lest he do something astronomically dumb like touch her face under the guise of moving her hair out the way.
Though he topped himself on the dumb scale a second later when he leaned down, just enough their noses almost touched, just enough he could count the tiniest freckles dotting her nose, just enough for his lips to...
Her opened and she ducked her head. Apologies thundered like a waterfall out his mouth for, well, for being such a guy. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Maybe he deserved his father’s punishments if he kept screwing up like that. They were friends. That’s all. He should’ve known.
“It’s okay,” Mel said beneath his rapid-fire stammers. “It’s okay. I’m not mad or anything. Just, kinda...distracted?” She pressed a fingertip to his sternum. “You got nacho cheese on your shirt.”
Humming, Isaac looked to where her finger had pressed into his chest only to be overwhelmed by the essence of her when she popped up on her toes and kissed him, causing his heart to flutter. And when she pulled away, she brushed her nose against his and leaned back on her heels, smiling up at him while whispering, “Gotcha.”

everyone always talks about those instagram and snapchat and tiktok filters that promote unrealistic beauty standards by changing your face shape and "smoothing" your features out and there's definitely a lot of important discussions to be had about it but can we please talk about how horrifically bad these "smoothing" "airbrushed" filters look on people with freckles or other variations in skintone. like. I have a lot of freckles and dear god. it always looks like someone rubbed clay into my face., or like I'm having some kind of terrible skin reaction. my face ends up a completely different texture and color from the rest of my body and I hate it so much

Week 8: Face Filters
Filtering Our Reality: Face Filters and the Fun (and Maybe Not-So-Fun) of Social Media
Face filters are fun, let's face it. Who doesn't like taking a photo with freckles from the sun, looking like a cat, or applying sparkly virtual makeup? They're a lighthearted approach for us to express ourselves and liven up our social media presence. I have been wondering, though, if face filters are going too far these days.
Tumblr media
When talking about face filter, it is undeniable that one popular social networking platform is Instagram, where users may share mostly photographs and videos. Instagram's filters are among its most prominent features which are getting more and more popular thanks to this app. Instagram-style filters can provide a sense of novelty to our regular images and selfies, but the impact of defamiliarization wears off and turns into a cliché since the filter is used so frequently (Jill Walker Rettberg 2014). Our ordinary images aren't meant to be works of art, though, for the most part. In an attempt to promote unrealistic beauty standards, Instagram filters often distort face features, body proportions, and skin tones. Moreover, when people compare themselves to the idealized images of themselves shown in filtered pictures, an excessive usage of filters can result in poor self-esteem and dissatisfaction with one's actual looks. This might lead to anxiety over one's own standards of beauty. When exposed to media information often, viewers begin to accept media visuals as accurate depictions of reality (Grabe, 2008).
Tumblr media
Positively, filters provide a variety of artistic opportunities. They may improve a picture's aesthetic appeal and turn a common snapshot into a piece of art. A well-selected filter has the power to convey a specific tone or aesthetic, enabling users to visually represent who they are. In addition to being instructional tools, filters may introduce viewers to various color schemes and photographic styles. In addition, filters have the potential to enhance confidence, especially for those who are self-conscious about their looks (Jill Walker Rettberg 2014). Users are encouraged to submit photographs they may not have otherwise, thanks to brief confidence boosts from subtle blemish-reducing filters or skin-smoothing effects. As a result, it may also be a means of self-expression, giving users the chance to experiment with virtual cosmetics or fantasy effects and try out various styles. In addition, the environment is compounded by gender and filters (Iftikhar et al, 2023) discovered that although both sexes utilize Instagram altering filters, women do so more frequently. To sum up, Instagram filters are a double-edged sword. Though they provide opportunities for creativity, self-assurance, and artistic expression, their excessive usage can lead to unattainable beauty standards, encourage inauthenticity, and impede the advancement of photographic abilities. The secret is to utilize it responsibly. While filters are a great tool for adding fun to images and expressing oneself, they shouldn't be used as a crutch that distorts reality or takes the place of actual connection.

So you understand what the term platonic means?
Tumblr media
Or literally means non sexual. Putting the word "queer" in front of it, which need I remind a LOT of old guard LGBT people still consider a slur, need not be a thing.
You clearly don't understand friendship in the first place of you think that friends can't be super close. Hell look at the term best friend. It's the closest form of friendship lable wise and it is literally a word set that is meant to portray closeness. Close enough in most cases to be family.
However these new generations, (yes I'm about to "get off my lawn") screwed up the idea of friendship. Social media SCREWED UP the idea of friendship. Nothing like Myspace and fighting for a person's top six. Nothing like FB and seeing every facet of all of your friends lives all the time, nothing like Instagram and it's filters to show everyone just how nice your life is and how pretty you look with fake fucking freckles. Something I was born with a LOT of and was bullied and tormented for having.
Nah none of you understand what actual friendship is. Because whatever this new age crap is, isn't it. Because now a days, "everything is toxic", and, "OMG did they say they had a different opinion*GASP* clearly that's their toxic trait and you don't need that 'trauma' in your life".
And what makes me even more annoyed by this is the fact that you try to pass this off as an LGBT thing when it's not. Which I adore, because there's this INSANE notion that cis/het people don't understand closeness. Except we do. The world still exists today because we do. And friendships that turn into "partnerships" often do so out of desire (yes that kind), or convenience. And guess what that technically falls under? Friends with benefits. Except here's a fun thought. Despite colloquial norms of what that term means now, benefits don't always have to mean sex.

Okey so i wanna tell this story about something i went thru with a person i met on here
This isnt a callout post nor something terrible happened it just kind of a weird experience
So... A few years ago, a mutual started dming me in here asking questions about myself and whatnot, we quickly started chatting more and getting more acquanted so i gave him my other social media (Instagram and Twitter)
He was a bisexual boy and i'm not gonna lie!!! I thought he was cute but i started noticing how he turned normal talks to sexual things very easily... Kind of boy who called other gay men "holes" and girls bitches etc
Didnt take it tooo seriously but was 👀 sketchy about the way he ended up asking me for nudes and stuff like that, the friendship went up that way for a moment until i got a boyfriend around that time so i told him i would be no longer partaking in sexting with him lmao
Anyway, a few months go by, we don't talk that often cause even tho i was serious about my statement he kind of kept insisting about the sexting and stuff so i was avoiding him all together
The day i blocked him on everywhere was when i posted a nice selfie of me on Instagram... He answered the story with a "okay now without a filter" wich Yea i was using a filter but nothing too altering like it was just some freckles and máscara or some dumb shit like that lmao
Looking back maybe it was stupid but i send him a video of me with my cute little outfit and my face without the filter
Next thing he answered me something i don't quite remember enough to quote but the jist of it all is that i think i got the feeling he called me ugly LMAO not i'm those words but i got upset and felt like it was really uncalled for since not thaat long ago he was asking for my ass? I blocked him on everything and moved on with my life ... End

✈️✈️ BRO WHAT—
[A very dumb and rough mini comic inspired on a conversation I had with my mom —it was me asking her why does she have freckles while I don't and she told me 'if you want them so bad just put a kitchen strainer above your face and let the sun do the job' and I was like "... K, that sounds just like something my two bb dorks would talk about thanks"]
I don't really hc that Shen Yuan had freckles or that SQQ always had them but now that I think about it it would be cute actually. 💕
[edit; lmao, this is why you should never publish things at 3am, but it's supposed to be in order now 😂😂]

- The girl who was the lead of case management who literally looked like an Instagram filter. That was just her. She has long black hair kept in a bun with a clip and clear glasses and freckles and nice painted nails and her outfits were always so nice and SHE was always so nice...... Before I left the hospital we were talking and she was like "I've been thinkin' about you" and I was like "Oh my god she's been thinking about me..... It's not like that but let me have this....."
- The Black girl in charge of activities who had a form to ask me about hobbies and said I was "very well rounded". She had a really sweet and distinct voice that I'd describe as chirpy and was so so nice. She had pretty eyes and pretty hair and a pretty smile AND AND AND she was an amazing artist. We had chalk drawing as one of our activities and she'd draw Disney characters PERFECTLY on model. And she complimented my drawings even though they sucked 😭😭 I was so jealous of her skills lol. It was crazy, but I was honestly immediately thinking abt what dates with her must look like, like she seems like the kind of person you'd love to take to a museum or an aquarium or something. I was so excited to see her every time we had activities scheduled. Why did we have to meet this way...
- This psychiatrist I only directly spoke to once who looked like Charlie Heaton's less angular brother. He's one of my celebrity crushes so I was like no fucking way this is happening to me LOL. He was wearing a nametag but I never saw what his name was. Nothing even stood out too much about his personality tbh, I was just like, wow he's pretty. It's embarrassing to say, but I got to a point where I wasn't doing well and I hadn't seen him around and I was like "Listen, if I see the hot psychiatrist, I won't kill myself" and then I proceeded to see him like 3 times in the main room and I was like FUCKKKKK!!!! (also I was not discreet about staring at him so he could probably tell 💀)
- The guy that'd only come in to talk to the nurses for a couple minutes. I could barely see his nametag so I have an idea of what his name is but it might be wrong. Mostly he just reminded me of one of my characters tbh. He was tall with a strong build and a charming personality, and had very reminiscent facial features
I am the embodiment of the Tumblr post that says "I can survive any situation if I have a crush on somebody there".
Hey. Genuine question. Why do so many hot people work at psych wards. I kid you not, I had 4 crushes while I was there.
