HELLO ANON ID LOVEEE TO DO THIS!! I’m so sorry if they’re a bit short, i haven’t seen much of him in so long but he used to be one of my favs 😭
HOMICIDAL LIU HCS:
GENERAL HCS:
6’2.
Reserved, Very polite when he’s fronting, I see him being very shy.
Punk/Grunge music all the way.
Something about him not enjoying old gen emo music because of Jeff sticks with me.
He doesn’t entirely hate Jeff, I just know he is holding onto things from his brother seriously fucking him up.
DID, PTSD, & Anxiety
When Sully takes over he probably doesn’t remember anything Sully does or says at all.
Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Green Day, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Stone Temple Pilots, The Distillers, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks (😭) ethusiast!
Scratches at his neck when he gets anxious.
Keeps his hair layered cut, short brown hair!
Kind of scene hair, he doesn’t like to think of it like that, it’s just the layers man.
Heterochromia, Brown and green!!
Liu is a complete angel when he’s is fronting, i like to think he’s very kind and sweet to everyone he’s friends with.
6 Years older than Jeff.
Sully does not like Jeff whatsoever.
ROMANTIC HCS:
He is such a gentleman compared to Sully pls 😭.
Offers you his jacket if you’re cold.
Brushes the hair out of your face.
WILL Stare at your features for hours on end.
He would be SO in love with you.
Even if he doesn’t hate Jeff, I personally think he wouldn’t want you around him too much.
Sully agrees with this 100%.
ACTUALLY he would probably make sure you weren’t anywhere in a 10 foot radius of that emo freak.
Sully likes you just as much as.
He might not be as sweet and romantic but he makes it his goal to make you feel loved in some way.
Liu will lay his head in your lap.
He will also come to you whenever he feels as if everything is getting to him too much.
Brushes your hair up with his hand so he can kiss your forehead.
hello gang i’m so sorry if i interpreted this so strange.. i haven’t written for liu/sully EVER, feel free to let me know if i did something WRONG, BUT HERE YOU GUYS GO!!!

dogged pursuit. part 5 of ? / part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4 summary: you've been appointed as the bodyguard of one doctor veritas ratio after a failed attempt on his life. he's easy to get along with, so long as you learn when to plug your ears and focus on his washboard abs. tags: filth below the tag, reader being a freak, bottom!Ratio, foot stuff(? mild if this tag is warranted), not beta'd
Revelation comes in the form of thin champagne glasses and another man’s lipstick on your cheek.
You don’t like to fool around on the job—you stand at the door of the ballroom while Veritas mills around with the rest of the guests, sloshing down more alcohol than you think is good for him. It’s probably the baseline amount he needs to tolerate all the talking heads floating around him, nameless IPC reps and rich folk with pearls around their necks. The kind of swooning crowd that heaps on nameless praise without knowing anything about him or any of his actual accomplishments.
They don’t know him like you do, you think, stewing in your envy as people touch him. It’s always fleeting. A pat on the shoulder or a brief nudge from a passerby, but you still don’t like it. You want to be glued to him, stuck on that deep blue suit like a bloodstain. Instead, you’re stuck by the door with your hands shoved into your pockets, gaze scanning the perimeter of the place, barely fending off the encroaching emotion.
You keep a careful eye on who walks in, who walks out. Your hawk-like gaze sticks tight to each guest, a silent warning. None of them really catch you off guard until a man— a pretty thing done up in pearlescent pinks, taller than you, stumbles on his way out. He nearly collapses into you with a pitiful kind of squeal. You act like any reasonable gentleman should and straighten him out, make sure he’s right and good before sending him on his way. He goes puttering off into the night with a flush on his cheeks, all the way down his throat.
You don’t realize that some of his lipstick smudged on the apple of your cheek until Veritas finally comes over. It’s been an hour. That’s an acceptable amount of time to stick around. Just enough to be polite. The sky’s gone black, horizon lit by thousands of glistening stars, faroff galaxies.
He said nothing when he approached you, informing you crisply that it was time to return home. You thought nothing of it. These gatherings always frustrated him, congregations of “blithering fools” swarmed to him like flies to honey, blathering in his ear about potential research projects and hare-brained plans that he couldn’t be less interested in. Usually, though, he would tell you about it. He would fill the silence himself while you enthusiastically nodded along, as though you understood any of what he was saying.
But he had been quiet the whole way home. And when you had pressed him—
“You needn’t worry about how I found the event,” he nearly scoffed. “It looks like you had a delightful time yourself.”
One snappy statement lead unto another. Veritas seemed so determined to accuse you of something, but refused to specify. It was hardly the first time you’d been on the business end of his seething ire, but this time—it frustrated you. It made you want to tear your hair out, when you realized he was insinuating you had an intimate moment with a person other than himself. Because who else on this island have you even looked at for more than five seconds? No one! He’s been the sole recipient of your attention this entire time!
It made your vision blow red hot. Your lips curled into a snarl as you surged up on him, jamming your knee between his powerful thighs. His back hit the wall with an audible thump, his eyes blowing wide.
“What. Are you talking about!? I’ve only been lookin’ at you! This whole time!” you snarled. Your hand fisted tight in his shirt, fabric crumpling beneath your white-knuckled grip as you leaned in real close, close enough to see the sweat on his brow. “So quit being such a damn brat.”
You’re not sure who lunged forward first. It all became lost in teeth and tongue, lips pressed so tight to yours that he could hardly get a breath in. You’re pretty sure it was you, but it was him who yanked you up the stairs. Him who pulled you into his room with all that strong-chorded muscle. Him who has his big hands on your waist, his lips kiss-swollen and his hair mussed up as he pants, face-flushed and fine suit knocked askew.
The ire from before is all but forgotten as you grab at him. Your fingers slide down his front, watching those buttons pop with unrestrained glee. It’s a fancy little number that twink over at the strategic department bought him. They clatter to the hardwood floor, the sound jolting him out of his stupor.
“You—” he begins, winding up to what’s doubtlessly another scolding, but you giggle and yank him close, teeth digging into the side of his neck. His words empty into a startled shout. One of your hands cups his head, threading into those dark locks to yank him down, while the other pulls at the sleeves of his suit. He seems to get the message. He abandons it with shaky hands, panting little breaths. Still, he glares at you, hawk-sharp as he dumps the now defunct garment onto a chair. “You will explain that to Aventurine should he ask why I am not wearing it at our next formal function.”
“Shut up about him,” you drawl against sweat salted skin. Your tongue encircles the blossoming bruise you’ve bitten into him. You feel him swallow beneath your greedy lips, lick the salt from his skin
You wrestle him out of his clothes and onto the bed. He lays out on his back for you. He looks suddenly—surprised to be there. Shirtless and flushed and wide-eyed. All this skin should be nothing new to you, but it feels new, because it’s just for you. His fat tits and thick biceps, the dips and curves of his abdomen, his skinny waist.
“And do you know how annoying it was? To see all those people clinging onto your coattails? Whisperin’ in your ear? One of ‘em put his hand on your shoulder and I wanted to kill ‘em, Doc.” You confess, looming over him. Undoing his trousers proves to be a little more difficult, ‘cause if you ruin another expensive piece of clothing, he’ll probably get all pissy again. Clumsy hands fumble with his buttons until they’re undone, and then you’re practically clawing them down his legs with his boxers, watching with rabid-bright eyes as his cock pops free. It slaps against his lower tummy.
“You’re—” Veritas breathes. His voice cuts off into a rattling inhale as your hand curls around the arch of his foot, bringing it with you as you climb atop the mattress, pulling his leg up, up, up. His toes curl, his thigh and calf twitching at the stretch. And his cock—thick and weeping hard, slides to rest atop his resting leg. He’s spread open for you, now. His golden eyes blow wide, a startled sound choked from his throat as he seems to process the reality of the position you’ve put him in.
His fingers tense and knead at the sheets. His gaze flickers from your face, to the ceiling, to other places in the room. He doesn’t even seem certain of where he is, anymore. Perhaps too startled at how easily this all escalated to form a proper sentence. His skin is flushed deep pink, from his forehead to his chest. Kiss bitten lips swollen as he swallows.
“You’re enjoying this too much.”
“That’s not what I meant—seeing me in such a flustered and unwieldy state—you take some perverse pleasure out of it,” he rasps, hands continuing to flex atop the bedding. “Even earlier today, at the luncheon—”
“You think too much,” you sigh, and press your lips to the edge of his heel. And then your tongue. He jumps at that, and you laugh. You squeeze the arch of his foot, shifting your grip to rub your thumb over the met-head pat. “I just want you because you’re sexy, and smart, and it’s so easy to get you going when I pretend to be stupid.”
“You’re not stupid—wait, what do you mean you pretend?”
You ignore him. “Been thinking about your feet in those slutty sandals all day.” you drawl, lips cutting into a wide smirk, showing your teeth.
He gapes, scandalized and momentarily rendered speechless. “You’re vile.”
An erumpent laugh bursts from deep in your chest. You finally relinquish your grip on his leg. He drops it onto the sheets, blushing like a fresh maiden. You slide down the mattress, knees dipping into the sheets on either side of his waist. His skin is like silk beneath your greedy fingers, chest soft and plump. Something on his chest gleams beneath the silvery moonlight and your brain grinds to a halt.
His nipples—they’re pierced. Silvery little rings embedded within the perking rosy buds.
“Doc, holy shit…” you gape, “Did you have these in all day?” You’re used to seeing his naked chest. At least one pec usually hangs out of whatever gossamer robe he’s thrown on for the day, but you’ve never seen him wear them. Roaming fingers roll beneath one of the little rings, your thumb stroking soft circles around his pebbled nipple. The bud hardens beneath your touch, rising and falling with his every stuttered breath. When you finally muster the strength to wrench your gaze away from his chest, to his face, he looks—flustered.
“Of course I did,” he says, with a righteous anger he has not, in your opinion, properly earned. “You just weren’t paying attention.”
You suck his nipple into your mouth, and he arches. Broad hands seize your shoulders, but don’t move to pull you off. His fingers hook into the silken fabric of your shirt. His neck is a column of pale marble, exposed as he throws his head back. The metal is cold on your tongue. The tip teases at the ring, curling around it.
And he’s sensitive. Sensitive in a wiggling, writhing way you hadn’t thought possible of such a stern scholar. The sculpted planes and curves of his body struggle against the sheets, against you as you hold him fast. His hips roll of their own accord, hard cock grinding against your thigh. When you pull off the abused nub, he shivers. He looks smaller when he’s beneath you, trembling like a cornered prey animal, exposed to the hot cattle prod of your gaze.
It stays on him, sharp and searching, as you scoot a little further down his body. Nose trailing down his pec. His skin smells like the nice soaps he uses. Lavender and lemon and ocean salts. He’s a little sweaty, too, slick in your mouth. Your teeth dig into the underside of his breast. The squeal that splits the air is so sudden, and so high, that it freezes you in place, lips pressed against his skin in an ‘O’.
“Quit—gnawing on me like a—bone!” Veritas fumes, slapping your back. The blow is half hearted at best, a love tap in comparison to the level of strength you know he can muster when he feels like it. All of these petty little denials are for show, because he’s still content to stay and shudder beneath you. You hum into his heated skin, pulling back to drag your tongue over the mark your teeth have carved into that alabaster flesh.
Your lips skate down the perfect curves and rolls of his toned abdomen, refusing to part from his skin for even a moment. His tummy twitches with every touch, your tongue tracing deep v-lines, teasing the space beneath his belly button.
Between his trembling breaths weave groans and soft sounds of his burgeoning pleasure. His wit has abandoned him, left him mindless in the cradle of your affections.
“This entire time,” he rasps, and he sounds like he’s on the verge of a revelation. “You were—”
You seal your mouth around his cock, and his out loud thoughts whittle into moans. Those thick thighs perch on your shoulders, heels digging into your back.

"Where is everyone?" I asked, my eyes scanning the empty mess hall. Alexander, sitting alone at the table, flashed a warm smile and rose, extending his hand toward me.
"Outside," he replied, that familiar grin lighting up his features. He had waited for me, choosing companionship over solitude. In that simple gesture, he became the embodiment of the better man I couldn't have dared to dream of.
I accepted his hand without hesitation, and together we moved towards the doors, picking up pace with each step.
"What are we doing?" I questioned, still trailing behind him.
The doors swung open to reveal a joyous scene—everyone dancing in the rain. While the others reveled in the sky's tears, we stood under the covered porch of the mess hall, observing the euphoria.
"Holy shit," I yelled out, laughter bubbling up as I let go of Alexander's hand and ran towards the others.
"Hange!" I called out to them, joining in the celebration. Raindrops adorned their face, merging with the lenses of their glasses.
"It's raining."
"It hasn't rained in forever, it feels like," I marveled, looking up at the sky. Closing my eyes, I savored the sensation of water cascading down my face.
"It's been five months exactly," Hange remarked, their eccentricity evident even in this simple revelation.
"Only a weirdo like you would know," Alexander's voice interjected, and I opened my eyes to find him standing there. His ash brown hair was drenched, yet a smile persisted on his face—a gesture that spoke volumes, considering his aversion to being wet. He knew, though, how much I cherished the rain.
"Come dance, Alexander," I invited, a smile playing on my lips.
"Iris," he said, grabbing my wrist, I watched his smile drop into something I've never seen before.

My eyes fluttered open to the chaotic sounds of banging and things crashing around. The bedroom door swung open abruptly, revealing Alexander barely able to stand, using the door frame for support.
He was drunk again.
"Iris," he slurred, stumbling toward the bed. "What the fuck."
"Why is my bed covered in papers? I told you to be ready for me when I come back," he complained, his words muddled by alcohol, as he approached the scattered documents.
I cursed silently. I had fallen asleep in the midst of doing paperwork, and now I had no idea where I was in the process. Quickly, I began gathering the papers in my hands, hoping Alexander could sleep off the effects of the alcohol. He was a different man when he was drunk.
"Can I have that, please?" I asked, attempting to take the paper from his hands.
"I don't know, can you?" he retorted. "What is this, anyway?" he questioned, squinting at the paper. He was too intoxicated to make sense of the words on the page.
"Work from Erwin. Now, lay down, and I'll get you whatever you want," I urged, trying once again to take the paper from his grasp. He stubbornly ripped it back, fixing me with a drunken stare.
"Why the hell do you have that pipsqueak's paperwork in my room?" Alexander growled, his voice escalating in volume.
"Was that freak in my room?"
"No, Alexander," I responded, attempting to calm the situation. "Please give me the papers back and lower your voice. People are sleeping."
"I don't give a damn!" he yelled, disregarding my plea. "Now tell me, was Levi in my room?"
"Alexander, no, he was not. I'm just doing paperwork. Please stop yelling," I pleaded, but he ripped the remaining papers from my hands and stormed out of his bedroom.
"What are you doing?" I asked, fear creeping in as I hurried after him. He stood in front of the fireplace, methodically tossing the papers into the flames one by one. A grim smile crossed his face as he glanced over his shoulder at me.
I rushed in front of him, grabbing the fireplace tongs to retrieve the burning papers, but it was futile. He threw the entire stack into the fire.
"Alexander, what the hell?" I screamed in frustration. He took the tongs from my hands and laughed, reveling in the chaos he'd created.
"Don't talk to me like that now," he growled, lowering his voice as his eyes darkened. With a grumble, he pushed my shoulders, sending me stumbling back into the bricks, my head hitting hard. His hand slid across my face, while the other gripped the back of my head, bringing my face closer to his, relishing the fear in my eyes.
The man before me was unrecognizable, a stranger born from the depths of his increasing alcohol consumption.
He threw me to the floor and started a relentless spree on my stomach, muttering incoherent words in between kicks.
"Wish you'd be more like her," he grunted with each blow. "You're nothing but a useless whore."
I curled into a protective ball, cradling my head between my arms and trying to shield my stomach with my legs. His drunken rampage continued until, finally, it ceased.
Was it safe for me to get up? Was he still awake? It didn't matter; he was so intoxicated that he probably didn't even realize what he had done. Not the first time.
I picked myself up, holding my aching stomach. The bastard had done a number on me today, at least sparing my face this time.
I gathered the papers I could salvage and threw on my brown cloak over my white nightgown. Moving as quietly as possible, I entered the room to find him laid out on the bed, face-first. My eyes lingered on the pillow, contemplating dark thoughts for a moment longer than I should have.
I could end it all right now. The pain would be over, but I couldn't. I love him, and he didn't mean it. He never does – that's what he tells me. Shaking free of the dark thoughts, I lifted his head and placed the pillow under him. Swiftly, I left his room and ventured into the dark corridors of the Scout Regiment.
Why did I entertain such vulgar thoughts? Alexander had been good to me, ensuring my well-being. So why did I want to hurt him in return? I wouldn't wish him the same harm he inflicts on me. I wondered if he felt the same, a twisted dance of pain between us.
The medical room was closed at this time, and I had no bandages of my own. I doubt bandages would help my stomach anyways. The only place open for me was the mess hall. Setting down a wall lamp on the table, I sifted through the saved papers – not much, but something. How would I explain this to the captain?
I couldn't tell him that Alexander threw them into the fire. He wouldn't believe me, and I sensed Levi catching on to my lies. Levi was a smart man, and there was no outsmarting him. I'd have to face the truth and its consequences once again.
The doors creaked open from the outside as I observed a small figure walking through, their cloak concealing their face. Who could be out this late? How did they manage to slip past the night patrol? They must've bribed the off duty officers well. Hopefully they come my way and bribe me to keep my mouth shut for seeing them out past curfew.
"What are you doing?" The familiar voice cut through the quiet. I looked up at him standing over the table, his eyes peering at me under his hood.
Looks like no one is bribing me with money after all.
"Captain," I said, quickly standing up and saluting him.
"At ease," he ordered, lifting his hood down. "Why are you still awake?" He glanced at the mess on the table and back at me.
"Those papers don't look done to me."
Well fuck.
"Correct, sir. I'm, uh," I stammered, fidgeting with my hands. "I'm getting it done right now."
"With no quill?" His eyebrow arched as he picked up the paper, examining it. I felt my body slump back into the chair, resting my elbows on the table and burying my face in my hands. I'm in trouble.
"Aldridge," he said, his tone laced with anger. "Why does it look like this was on fire?"
I couldn't find the words even if I tried. My tongue felt heavy, caught at the back of my throat. The chair screeched as he took a seat in front of me.
He pulled my arms from my face, his grip tightening around my wrists as his eyes bore into me. I could only look away, trying to hide my face in my shoulder.
"Answer your captain when he speaks to you," he scowled.
"Because it was," I bit my lip, attempting to hold back tears. "Please let go of my wrists. It hurts."
He released my wrists and stood up. I could feel him moving around me, his fingers gently lifting my chin. I resisted opening my eyes; I didn't want him to witness my current state. How could I be his second in command when I was reduced to tears over burnt papers?
I couldn't even stand up for myself. How did he expect me to be a part of his squad?
"Open your eyes," he said, his voice significantly softer than before.
Reluctantly, I opened my eyes to find him squatting at eye level, his fingers still supporting my chin.
"What happened?" he asked.
"The papers got tossed in the fireplace. I'm so sorry, Captain. I tried to save them, but I couldn't save them all. I'll accept any punishment-" he shushed me.
"How did they end up in the fire, Iris?" his soft voice queried again.
"I-I don't know," I stammered.
"Don't lie."
"Alexander," was all I managed to say before he stood up and began to walk away. In desperation, I grabbed his arm, trying to prevent him from leaving the mess hall. He dragged me along until he stopped in annoyance.
"What are you doing?" he demanded.
"Please," I cried, falling to my knees. "Don't go to him. Don't wake him up. I just got him to sleep. Please. He was drunk; he didn't mean to." My sobs grew louder as I dropped his arm, hands now covering my face. He stood there, towering over me, witnessing my pathetic state at his feet.
"Please. Don't wake him up," I pleaded again.
"You're going to wake everyone up," he remarked. "Go sit down at the table and collect yourself."
His footsteps faded into the mess hall as I laid there embarrassed and ashamed.
I pulled myself up and sat down as Levi instructed, laying my head on the table, bracing for the inevitable yelling from Alexander's hall. I would trade it all for to return to the time before Alexander became captain – when he wasn't constantly drinking and was still the sweet man I knew.
"Here," Levi's voice broke the silence.
I lifted myself once more to see him handing me a tea cup. I accepted it, watching as he poured chamomile tea. "It'll help you relax," he explained.
"Thank you, Captain," I said, lowering my eyes to the tea.
Moments passed in a comforting silence, like I didn't just break down at my Captains feet.
"Let's run through what happened, shall we?" Levi's gaze met mine.
"I-" I stumbled over my words. "Alexander came back drunk from one of his meetings."
"What meeting?" Levi asked quickly.
"I don't know. I'm assuming with Erwin or the captains."
"How often does he go to these meetings?"
I gave him a puzzled look but answered,
"At least once a week."
"Does he tell you where?" Levi continued.
"I... no. Well, some have been in Wall Sina, actually, but-" I stopped to look at him. "Why are you so curious about it?"
"It doesn't matter; just answer truthfully," Levi said. "Does he talk about the meetings at all with you?"
"No."
"Mention who goes?"
"Erwin," I replied. "You. Mainly captains."
"Why are you asking about meetings right now? Aren't you supposed to be scolding me for the paperwork?" I huffed. Levi's sudden interest, especially in Alexander, was confusing. He never showed interest in anything.
He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, clearly frustrated. "Continue," he ordered.
"Alexander came back drunk and pissed off. Thought you were in his room while he was gone because of the papers and threw them in the fireplace. And yeah, so on," I quickly explained, feeling out of breath.
Levi just stared at me, his index finger lightly tapping his teacup as he prepared to take another sip. "Alexander a nasty drunk?" he asked, catching me off guard.
I paused, taken aback by the unexpected question. "I'll take that as a yes," Levi remarked before I could answer.
"No, he just has his moments," I quickly defended.
"Oh yeah?" Levi leaned forward, putting his elbows on the table.
"Yeah," my voice trailed off, avoiding Levi's harsh gaze. I felt like I was being dissected.
The chair beneath Levi squeaked as he stood up. His hand moved across the table, and I flinched down before his touch reached me. Embarrassed, my eyes quickly met his.
His gaze scanned me, a flicker of curiosity crossing his eyes. "I wasn't going to hurt you," he said gently, laying his hand on top of my head and messing up my hair.
"I'm sorry, habit," I laughed, trying to ease the tension.
"Get some sleep. Or don't. You better be in the barn after breakfast, no excuses." he said, walking away.
As I sat there alone in the dimly lit mess hall, the silence wrapped around me like a comforting shroud. Levi's unexpected concern and the unsettling revelation about Alexander's darker side left me pondering the complexities of the people I thought I knew.
The memories replayed in my mind – Levi's piercing gaze, the gentle touch of his hand, and the way he revealed a sliver of understanding. It was a side of him I hadn't anticipated, a softer edge beneath the stoic exterior.
Then there was Alexander, my once sweet and caring partner, now transformed into a man I struggled to comprehend. The alcohol had become a good fried, distorting his personality into someone unrecognizable.
I leaned back in the chair, staring at the ceiling, lost in my thoughts. The tea in the cup had turned cold, mirroring the chill that lingered in the air. The events of the night had left an indelible mark on my perception of those around me.
In that quiet moment, I wondered if our lives within the walls were destined to be entwined with such complexity. Levi's presence had offered a strange solace, an unexpected refuge in the chaos that had unfolded.
As the first rays of dawn painted the sky, I rose from the chair, leaving the mess hall behind. The barn awaited, and with it, the challenges of a new day. I couldn't erase the turmoil of the night, but perhaps, in facing the realities before me, I could find a semblance of clarity amidst the chaos.
Or so I thought. After that day Fate laughed at my innocent eyes. If only then I knew, maybe I could have done something then.

Comic book creator Todd McFarlane talks Spawn reboot, working with Ozzy and competing with the giants
Credit Calgary herald
Tumblr media
Todd McFarlane has not forgotten the vow he made to Calgary back in 2017.
At the time, the comic book artist, producer and toy entrepreneur was a guest at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and was asked about the long-gestating reboot of Spawn, which had spent years in developmental purgatory. He told the audience at the Stampede Corral that the film would hold its premiere in Calgary if he gets it “off the ground.
Fast-forward six years later McFarlane says the film is back on track. A-list writers Scott Silver, who co-wrote the 2019 hit Joker, and Malcolm Spellman, who created the Disney+ superhero series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, are currently working on the screenplay. Jamie Foxx has long been attached to play the lead role, a superhero/antihero that McFarlane first created at the age of 16 in his parents’ basement near Crowchild and 24th Avenue N.W.
The 1992 comic book debut, which came out on McFarlane’s Image Comics, sold more than 1.7 million copies and the Spawn series holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running, creator-owned, superhero comic book title. There was a 1997 live-action film with Michael Jae White, which grossed more than $100 million, and an Emmy-winning animated series that ran on HBO from 1997 to 1999. The reboot has been in the works in one form or another for years.
“On the movie front, hopefully – fingers crossed – by the middle of this year we should be making a big announcement that we found our studio, we made our deal and potentially, as part of that deal, they’ve given us our production start date,” says McFarlane. “Really, all fans care about is ‘When can I go see it?’ But at least I’ve got to be able to say ‘This year. We’ve got the money, we’ve got the backing and we’ve even got a start date.'
When it does come out, McFarlane still wants to hold one of the premieres in his hometown.
“Let me tell you right now, if I possibly can, I’m putting it into the contract,” McFarlane says. “It might be the dealbreaker. And I get two premiere spots. I live in Phoenix, I think the Phoenix people will come out in droves because they did the first time we did Spawn. I think they will come out in droves and have a good time in Calgary. That’s it. There it is: If you don’t give me that, then I pull this entire deal. I’m going to see if I can negotiate that.”
McFarlane was back in Calgary this week visiting family. On Sunday, hundreds of fans showed up at Video Game Trader in Lake Bonavista for an autograph session. In 1981, the William Aberhart High School grad left Calgary at the age of 18 on a baseball scholarship to Eastern Washington University, where he studied art and design. Within a few weeks of graduation, he got his first comic book job for Marvel. He would go on to illustrate for both Marvel and DC, drawing for Batman: Year 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and co-creating the Spider-Man villain/anti-hero Venom.
But he is arguably still best known for creating Spawn and for co-founding Image Comics in 1992, which also became home to Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore’s Walking Dead comic-book series. In 1994, he revolutionized the toy industry with the realistic action figures he created for McFarlane Toys. In 1999, he won an Emmy for the animated Spawn series and earned a Grammy nod for directing Pearl Jam’s animated video for Do The Evolution. The following year, he won a Grammy for directing the video for Korn’s Freak on a Leash.
Late last year, he returned to the medium to direct the video for Ozzy Osbourne’s Patient Number Nine, which resulted in a lengthy feature in Rolling Stone magazine about McFarlane’s work in music videos.
“The request came from (Ozzy’s wife) Sharon Osbourne,” McFarlane says. “I knew her from the past. We had done some stuff with toys and comic books with her and had always done well. In the pre-preparation for shooting, I was dealing mostly with the record label and Sharon. I’m sure she showed everything to Ozzy to get the sign-off. The day of the shoot, that dude was a pro. It’s one thing I’ve always been super impressed with for all the music videos I’ve been involved with. When you say ‘Action,’ all of them are performers. They know what to do when they are on stage. This switch goes on and they just do it. At that point when we shot it, I think it was about a week before his back surgery. He just had pretty extensive back surgery and was living in severe pain. You could see he was in pain and his mobility was limited and all that. So he paced himself, which is what a smart person would do. But when I said ‘Action,’ he turned into the 25, 30-year-old Ozzy.”
On top of the promising developments in the Spawn reboot, McFarlane has continued to find success in both the comic book and toy worlds. He credits the relatively small group of people he works with for the company’s David-versus-Goliath success.
“I’ve got a good core of people,” he says. “We’re scrappy. We’re the Bad News Bears of our industry.”
In 2021, Spawn beat out behemoths DC Comics and Marvel to become the No. 1 selling comic book. That same year, his Spawn spinoff titles – Scorched, Gunslinger Spawn and King Spawn – broke sales records. Last year, the crossover Batman Spawn title became a bestseller.
McFarlane Toys’ beat out Fortune 500 companies such as Hasbro and Mattel with the bestselling action-figure line of 2021. The company is currently licensed to create figures for Black Adam, Shazam, The Flash and Batman movies for the DC Multiverse, James Cameron’s Avatar, Dune and even Ted Lasso.
“Their size is their blessing and their curse,” says McFarlane about the giant corporations he competes with. “I could say the same thing about my smallness: it’s my blessing and my curse. Here’s the blessing: I can move quick, I can move fast. Here’s their curse: They are so big and bloated, they can’t move fast. If I see an opening, I can see that opening way faster than they can get into it. I’m not trying to compete, let’s say on the toy front, directly with what the giants are doing. I’m not trying to slay the giants, that’s not the victory. The victory is saying: Where have they left the gap?”

Can you answer for Trystan x Carolina?
what kinds of music do they like?
are they a frivolous spender or a miser?
Hey Nonny, thanks for the ask. From this list.
NGL, the first one was one of the tougher questions I've had, but I really appreciate the Trystan x Carolina questions. I need to flesh them out more! 💜
What kinds of music do they like?
Carolina: I swear, Spotify is as confused about her as they are about me because I imagine she has very eclectic and varied tastes in music.
Like most people, the music that was popular during her high school years always sticks with her. For that reason, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Rihanna, Pitbull, and Owl City will always be on her playlists.
But she was also very influenced by her father's favorite music, which included two things: Latin music and classic rock. Some of his (and her) favorites from the former are Luis Miguel, Tito Puente, Marc Anthony, and Willie Colon from the latter: Pink Floyd, Queen, Rod Stewart, Van Halen, and one that combines the two, Santana.
With that said... I think she also likes electronic music, she is 100% a Hozier disciple, and, thanks to Uncle Tommy, she has a love for the standards, like Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
Trystan: This was a struggle for me... what would an exiled Eastern European Prince love? Carolina is my world. Trystan couldn't be more removed. lol
I'm sure he was raised on classical Drakovian and Drakovian folk music, and I'm sure he rebelled against it... but now that he's older and more at peace with himself, he finds himself listening to it again. (OFC, since there is no Drakovia, I have no real-life examples of this lol)
I don't have any idea why... but I see him as a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan. Like so much I think I need art of him wearing one of their shirts lol He probably dabbled in Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam, also.
I also see him as a club kid, so dance music (especially long ass remixes) would be something he likes as well. I'm thinking David Guetta and Calvin Harris-esque, but also some of the old disco classics (yeah, he's got Abba on the playlist; the man is THE Dancing Queen).
His guilty pleasure is the Backstreet Boys (and Luke tortures him when he finds out) and when he's sad, you will find him listening to very dramatic classical music, think Stravinsky and Mahler. And Carolina totally gets him into Hozier. lol
Are they a frivolous spender or a miser?
This one feels very straightforward... Carolina is very cautious with her money, and Trystan loves to spend his. I don't think we have to get into how this came to be. lol
One thing about Carolina that is a bit out of character for her is that she loves expensive purses. So even as a younger woman, she would splurge on them, but not frequently. She didn't have many, and they'd get a lot of use. But to her, splurging was Kate Spade, Michael Kohrs, and Coach. She never even entertained Dior, Louis Vuitton, or Prada... but once Trystan finds out - he starts buying her stuff. At first, she's giddy, but then she makes him cool it - she will never be comfortable with such extreme extravagance.
These were SO FREAKING MUCH FUN to answer. Thank you!

sooooo i am on a roll apparently because I completed two mangas after pearl boy and both of them were so different that it gave me a whiplash, idk man I have been wanting to read more yaoi mangas these days after pearl boy
So I completed full volume and even though it was so cute and i loved it, i think it only lagged in the angst part of it. like it was cute and nice and i don't want to use generic words for it, the smut was beautiful I loved dowon and beom's chemistry and how their relationship progressed, i loved everything but it was not like something that ripped my heart off and I guess that's my jam but it was nice break from all the rona-dhona after pearl boy
and then i also completed the blood bank and omg i cried more like i wept my lungs out, i scratched my head and was like what???? But it was gorgeous, so freaking gorgeous, I am in love with shell nobody can make me hate that boy ever. will protect him at every cost. Shell and Eric will be one of my otps of all time. I am loving this spree of reading mangas these days. want more.

Ooh! Was the outsider the clans refused hospitality to Akari/Rei? Refusing to take them in after they got exiled from Jubilife? It fits together so well because Akari/Rei has connections to Arceus, so of course Dialga and Palkia would notice if the clans refused hospitality to them, that's like their cousin sort of.
…ah shoot that’s a really good idea.
It’d tie so much better into the PLA plot as a whole and would give Jubilife a proper role in the AU, which it really doesn’t have atm. Tho if we’re going with divine punishment, Jubilife Village itself would then be the ones Pokécursed for banishing the protagonist.
Man, this is a such great idea but it doesn’t mesh with my current timeline. As it stands, it goes as follows:
Volo and Giratina screw around with space-time and accidentally kidnap an entire train man. They wait to see what happens re: Arceus.
Ingo integrates himself into Pearl Clan and becomes Sneasler’s Warden
Volo and Giratina screw around some more and bite off more than they can chew when 4/5ths of Hisui gets jammed into the Unknown/Purgatory, thus sending everyone to the afterlife without killing anyone. Both are cursed by Arceus for this.
Jubilife is spared but they’re now cut off from the rest of Hisui by a distortion barrier. They’re basically on their own and likely face more hardships for this. (I should find a better way to include them jfc)
The Clans are freaking out because holy shit wtf is this weird place. Ingo is one of the few brave enough to go past Hisui’s borders and poke around in this new land. Gets wrapped up with the Beast and subsequently abandons Pearl Clan.
Clans are really riled now. So when two strangers known as the Monk and the Nun show up at Diamond and Pearl Clans respectively asking for a place to stay for the night, they get harshly rebuffed. Monk and Nun reveal themselves as Dialga and Palkia and cursing ensues. (Clans miiiight not remember that last detail. Like I said, still fleshing this out).
Only the Wardens and Nobles are spared the cursing because none of them were at the main settlements when this happened. They have enough to deal with anyways as, oh, hey the Nobles can talk now. Neat!
No help comes from the Unknown itself. A place known as the City might be able to help but they absolutely refuse to have any dealings with Cursed folk.
Figure known as the Hunter skulks about. No one knows what their deal is besides having some sort of beef with the Beast.
Figure known as The Old Man of the Mountain quietly observes all of this.
Time passes strangely in the Unknown. Volo spends decades as a Starly guiding the lost. Ingo spends three years as the Woodsman. The Clans possibly spending a few months cursed (big maybe). Nobody is happy.
About two or three years after Jubilife is left by itself, Laventon, Akari and Rei go on an expedition to study the Mega Distortion but are swallowed up too. Find themselves in the Unknown, which Laventon is so excited about but the kids less so bc wtf I didn’t sign up for this!
Emmet is brought to the Unknown.
And that’s just a rough outline of the bigger picture atm, which is why the Jubilife exile doesn’t fit in bc it’d change everything. And this is decidedly much harder to draw for! So you can see why I haven’t talked about it much. 8’)

a Grunge Takeover - my recap of the past two days pt 1
On thursday night i had the absolute pleasure of seeing Jerry Cantrell in the flesh. He's my number 1 favourite guitarist, so I was obviously extremely excited and me and my friends queued up early to get as close to the barrier as possible. It was super cool to see everyone that was showing up to queue, so many men with long hair and flannels, people wearing the sickest band t-shirts - AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. (Also spotted an original Boggy Depot tour shirt, super jealous). It felt so nice to be surrounded by a bunch of people who like all the same things as you. We managed to get the best seat in the house, right in front of the stage. Jerry walks on along with his band, looking as good as always, dude's aged like fine wine honestly. They opened with Them Bones, and as soon as the first two chords were played everyone was pushed forward, the crowd was jumping and head banging and it really felt like what I imagine a dive bar in the 90s would've felt like. They played a bunch of Alice in Chains stuff, such as We Die Young, Man in the Box, Bleed the Freak, Rooster, Would... the mosh pit was going pretty strong and I was head banging so hard that my neck was aching after the show. Jerry also brought out the blue dress guitar, and yes it's as sick as it looks. They also played Cut You In, My Song and Between off Boggy Depot and Angel Eyes and Psychotic Break (!!!!) from Degredation Trip. Psychotic Break was soooo insane, best song ever fr. A very nice surprise when they slowed it down and played Whale and Wasp, 10/10. Really showcased just how good musicians they all are. Then, It Ain't Like That came on and I felt like I was in that scene from Singles. Overall, insane night. Jerry looked at me ! it was so bonkers, and I also managed to get one of the picks he threw. Walking out, I was in such a shock that I honestly felt like I was on drugs despite being pretty much sober. I smoked about 4 cigarettes after the gig and on our way home, we walked past Greg Puciato, who I guess recognised me from the front row because he winked and waved at me while I stood there staring with my mouth open, haha. Best. Gig. Ever. Mr Cantrell, I will love you forever.

The HellBilly Pulpit: The Brooding Time - Gen X in the ’90s
What can I say that hasn’t been said already about the 90s and Gen X?
Maybe, I can just reflect on what it was like from my point of view during that amazing time.
I was in high school and if I only knew then what I know now lol. I remember this was when I first became aware of what was going on in life. I was listening to something new that I had just bought, it was nothing like I’d heard before-, Alice in Chains Facelift and I thought to myself, here it is, this is a new beginning, MY beginning, I can be anything and whoever I want to be.
My time was a bit “in-between” so to speak. Big hair and glam metal were fading away and Grunge was just starting to break the surface. So weird that in-between time. We/I didn't know where to go.
During these next few years, I saw things that are now just footnoted in pop culture, although through the eyes of wonder. We didn’t have cell phones and youtube and we BARELY had anything that resembled the internet. Social media was Mtv and Mtv2. Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, Nickelodeon, and man was it fun. We saw Waco go down, the first attack on the trade center, the first gulf war, and President Clinton. Oh, man... We also had Achy Breaky Heart and the first Gen Power Rangers. Comedy for us teens was a mixture of everyday humor, to that cutting edge of the adult world just peppered in there. It was glorious. I remember laughing harder in that time frame than I have through most of my adult life so far. Things were cool. Things were carefree. Things were getting weird.
Then something happened. We got broody, angsty, annoyed, and irritated. We didn’t end up being like our older brothers and sisters who were so eager to live out what our parents wanted for them. We didn’t want to be told who we were supposed to be. A lot of us watched our parents work themselves stupid as we became latchkey kids. Minimal supervision and a shift in our reality all fed into this, “life sucks and everything is dreary” sort of attitude that became what a lot of us perceive as “gen x”. We went from Disney to Tim Burton. We were determined to break that mold and stop living what everyone wanted us to do and be ourselves. We became the “slackers and the losers” (thanks Beck for the unofficial theme song), and not caring as each day that passed was just another dreary reminder that we did, didn’t matter in the end. Life sucks and reality bites.
Music changed our lives instantly. Record stores were a thing and we could immerse ourselves in just about any genre or style you could think of. Man, we were an eclectic bunch. My tape rotation consisted of Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden one minute and then Slayer, Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies, Danzig, and Metallica the next. The more intense, the better. It was cathartic to know that what I felt inside was felt by others too. The music told me that I’m not alone. That still resonates today, sometimes even more with all of the subgenre and side projects that my favorite bands have spawned or influenced since that time.
There was no shortage of fuel for our fire either. We had The Craft, The Crow, Nine Inch Nails, and Tool all reaching out to open our minds and set us free. White Zombie beat the normal out of us and threw on the dirt, it was amazing. Korn brought out our anger and set it on fire.  Big shorts and pants before Jnco’s were a thing. The Blair Witch, Lalapalooza, the second Woodstock, skateboards, piercings, tattoos, and punk rock on top of it all! The freaks were in and we weren’t going away!
In the latter part of the 90s, I was in the military for a brief time, got married at 20, and thought I had life planned out... SMACK- I was discharged, divorced, and living with my bros to watch the turn of the century. Lol... Y2K! Your computers are gonna die!!! Man, we were stupid back then... Wait.. we still are... Maybe worse lol.
I embraced my time as a slacker in the military where my ideals were definitely not what the military needed or wanted. I found myself once again, outcast and brooding. I discovered that I wasn’t just socially different, I was spiritually different. Basic Training found a lot of us regretting our decisions and looking for comfort. I tried the church only to find it just felt too generic. All of the people in the pews reciting the same prayers, praying for the same things, and just being immersed in their cookie-cutter spirituality. It did not speak to my individual wants or needs or feelings. I wanted... No, I needed something more. This wasn’t for me.
Enter the occult. Enter paganism. Enter the anti-established religion mentality.
I started out with learning about some ancient celt myth and magick (my first book), from there I kind of branched out in about a half dozen different ways. I read about Satanism, Wicca, Atheism, and tons of things in between. Mind that when I started this road to discovery, I was an enlisted soldier in the US Army. these things did not go over well with those in charge. We had a prayer once before a holiday-themed run where I did not participate. I stood there, looking around, being respectful to those who were participating, but  I was called into the office and asked if I practiced “the dark arts”. I had to laugh. Such a blanket, stereotype pinned on me for just being true to myself. They must have seen my barracks room. Blacked out with various metal band merch laying about with the quasi shrine to Marilyn Manson. The incense and what probably struck them more than anything was the lack of any Christian-themed propaganda, I mean decor. :)
All of this lead me to believe all the more that I was on the right path when I stood out as an individual enough to make people question who I am and what “is wrong with me”. This was the new brood infecting their rank and file and I’d like to think that I set a path for others that came after me.
When I was discharged and went home, I felt out of place. I had a new appreciation for the world, nature, and humanity all because of staying true to who I wanted to be even beyond the brainwashing that I endured. That is another story for another time though...
Those years in the ’90s really were a crazy time to come of age. But I wouldn’t change a thing about it. It set me up for life’s later difficulties and triumphs.
It was the brooding time.
