Bethesda's pretty good with their skeleton and mannequin posing for environmental storytelling, but they really took it a step further with the petrified corpses in 76.

Seeing what these people were doing in their last moments, as their disease took over and burned them up from the inside out, leaving just a charred hunk only resembling the person they once were in vague form alone, is both interesting and emotional.

Most of them are just standing out in the open, having burned up while trying to reach some unknown destination. Maybe wandering about in a daze as pain overtook them before the fire did. Others are curled up into themselves, the agony of their process clear. But some, like the subject above, seemed to have had a clear intent in how they wanted to spend their last moments, knowing their inevitable end was coming either way.

Unlike skeletons, which could be moved around and posed by bored wastelanders as a type of post-apocalyptic art and thus leaving it up to speculation whether the subjects died as you find them or were moved later, touching a petrified corpse causes it to fall apart into nothing but chunks of irradiated ash.

So when you find a body posed like this, you know that that person made some concious effort to be where they were when the end came - forever stuck in that position. At least, until a careless wanderer or a strong enough wind comes along.
