Papa always used to say that to have a good day, you have to have good skin, and to have good skin, you have to spend at least 1 hour when you wake up and 1 hour before bed taking care of it! Review: Strictly Ballroom - Show Me Your Paso Doble

Sometimes you start watching a movie and you know that you're not going to like it. It's not bad, it's not offensive, it's just not the film you were looking for in that moment...

THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH STRICTLY BALLROOM

"Did I fail him as a mother?!" Baz Luhrmann opens his film with a series of interviews about an incident that occured at the Southern Districts Watarah Championships, in which main character and ballroom darling Scott Hastings blew his career by including non-regulated steps into his routine with partner Liz Holt. The world-building accomplished in this short segment is nothing short of exquisite. Not only is it very funny but the exaggerated reactions of Scott's friends and family throw the viewer into the deep end of the film's ballroom dancing world in a way that doesn't leave us confused, but completely understanding the level of scandal that Scott has incurred upon himself.

"I don't CARE about winning the Pan Pacific Grand Prix!" But Scott is no longer willing to compromise. He has something inside of him that he needs to put out into the world, even if it means killing his chances of becoming a champion. Enter Fran, a pimply, awkward but enthusiastic beginner who encourages Scott's new steps and defies all the rules of their world by approaching Scott and asking him to be her partner, "Look, a beginner has no right to approach an Open Amateur." "Yeah, well an Open Amateur has no right to dance non-Federation steps, but you did, didn't you?" Fran herself goes through little change throughout the film, having arrived fully formed as a young woman willing to call it as she sees it and who isn't afraid to put herself out there. Her feisty nature brings him back down to earth and while she might not be at the same level as Scott, Fran's passion for dance and desire to try something new is equal to his own.

Underneath Strictly Ballroom's main plot is a sweet and quiet love story between Scott and Fran, inevitable under the circumstances, but viewers would be mistaken to think that this is all the film is. The main story revolves around the maverick Scott and his defiance of the regulations imposed by head of the Australian Dancing Federation, Barry Fife, a plot which culminates in Scott launching himself onto the floor of the Pan Pacific Grand Prix in the costume of a bull-fighter, where he dances the paso doble with Fran - a Latin dance with connections to the military and bullfighters. Their initial practice of a rumba, a dance associated with love and sensuality, is over-taken by the more agressive and competitive paso doble as Scott frees himself more and more from the restrictions of the federation. Indeed, Scott has to re-learn the steps and soul of the paso doble from Fran's native Spanish father and grandmother, who laugh at his initial dance school version of the steps, "Show me your paso doble."

It is always interesting to see such a distinctive director's debut feature; while Strictly Ballroom is full of all the glitz, glamour and glitter that this world operates on, it is much less of a sensory overload than Luhrmann's later works like Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby and Elvis. Still, hints of the director to come can be found in the visceral world-building, Fran and Scott's magical dance in front of the Coca-Cola sign, and the glamorous costumes and over-the-top hairstyles of the dancing community. However, it in the quieter moments that the film truly shines; when Scott watches Fran's father dancing in the half-light of their back-yard with only clapping and a guitar for accompaniment or when Scott and Fran dance their beautifully intimate rumba behind the curtains, stripped bare of the costumery and drama of the competition floor. These are the film's most powerful moments, where Scott finally finds the passion, truth and intensity he's been looking for.

Other bits:

the way Scott, Liz, Wayne and Vanessa come out onto the ballroom floor at the beginning of the film like the popular kids that they are (chef's kiss)

"There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Scott and Liz would be the next Pan Pacific Grand Prix Amateur Five Dance Latin American Champions."

"Hi Liz! I thought you should have wo-" Fran gets punched by Liz (while we don't want to see Fran get punched by anyone the comic timing of this moment is inarguably hilarious)

"I want Ken Railings to walk in here right now and say, "Pam Short's broken both her legs and I want to dance with you!" "Pam Short's broken both her legs and I want to dance with you."

Tara Morice is so funny in this film, her timing is brilliant

Fran's excitement and Scott's pleasure and laughter at seeing her so excited when he tells her he wants to dance with her at the competition is such a sweet, beautiful little moment between the two of them (and likely the first time in a long time that Scott has enjoyed or been around someone who enjoys dancing in such an honest care-free way) (IMO)

"It was announced today her partner of ten years Nathan Starkey will be retiring because of commitments to his landscape gardening business."

"The inconceivable sight of Scott dancing with Fran!"

“I want you to be on your best behaviour,” François was instructing while he brushed the rouge1 against Gilbert’s lips. He’d insisted on not leaving him to the attentions of a servant and had him trapped in the toilette2 like a mouse in a lion’s den, held fast by the long fingers keeping his jaw still.

“I understand that your court is quite unlike that of Versailles3, but you must not embarrass yourself. Or myself, heaven forbid,” he continued, and Gilbert wasn’t going to interrupt him when François was leaning so close he could smell his musky perfume, the type that was all the rage. He could almost count François’ eyelashes, this close.

“...But you’re going to be a good boy for me, aren’t you?”

François must have caught him staring, he sat back and was looking at Gilbert with an analytical eye: He’d been powdered and pomaded – with François commenting about how it was a crime to keep hair of such length and thickness trapped a queue4 all the time – and then made up like a proper gentleman of the French court.

He felt altogether silly beyond words being dolled up and being told to mind his courtesies, but.

At the same time as all that, François was giving him a feline smile of approval and it… He wasn’t sure he had the words in any of the languages he knew to exactly quantify the way his belly did a flip.

Gilbert was hyperaware of the way François had just been holding his jaw and holding him still while brushing the rouge to paint his lips. Some part of him must have been mad because he couldn’t stop himself from darting his tongue out to lick and to taste and–

François’ cry of alarm made him cackle victoriously but the hands back at his chin were a reward, let alone the thumb trying to save the poor smudged rouge.

From there it was simply all too easy to be anything but a ‘good boy’, grinning and nipping at his fingers: if he were going to embarrass himself with all this primping and pampering he might as well embarrass them both.

Footnotes:

1: “Rouge” (as opposed to ‘rogue’) was your all-purpose blush and lipstick worn over white powder, both of which were commonly made from some… Really not fantastic ingredients. Both genders wore makeup, especially at the court of Versailles. 

2: A dressing room, basically.

3: King Frederick William I (the “Soldier King” and Fritz’ father) was infamously incredibly austere and focused on practical, wholesome, soldier-y things. Everything that a 1700s European court was not.

4: Borrowed from China, the ‘queue’ was a long braid tied back with ribbon and was made mandatory for Prussian soldiers by FW1 (and was common amongst other European armies as well). In the early 1700s the popular fashion of noble men tended to involve a whole lot of poofy curls, be they natural or wigs. Around this time ‘bags’ were probably coming into use to tie back long hair into a cute little silk bag – this is what I’m personally imagining Fran wearing.

When I first realised that my dad's promises are as solid as river water, I decided that it was time for me to leave the castle and go out exploring the town alone. I thought it would be like in the books, vibrant and beautiful! And it was vibrant! But also loud and chaotic and messy and it made my head hurt and my ears ring. I could feel my heart nearly stop with every loud honking car. And the people. They. Wouldn't. Shut. Up. I was falling apart at the seams! I'm so glad Theodore was there to take me somewhere calm... I don't know what would've happened if I had to stay there for a little longer.. oh I've been rambling again.. sorry!

anyway in general i am pretty sparse w/ found family headcanons so unless i say otherwise it's just safest to assume i see everyone as friends or co-workers and that's it. i'm often a boring stickler for canon/canon-compliance too.....

when it comes to seb the only family figure hcs i have for them are justine and john as mother/brother figures. see kay's entry too bc that relationship is pretty similar to how i see seb and justine.

[ yumimei / ] all edgeworth is to seb after aai2 is literally just a cool older co-worker and mentor and he only becomes like family After seb and fran are basically engaged lmao. and it is a source of torment for both of them like ahh. help. my funny protege/slightly intimidating mentor figure is going to become my in-law now. we're going to drive each other crazy <3

for fran and edgeworth: i have the third vk sibling + her daughter somewhere in there. she's 15 years older than fran but was around to help out miles a tiny bit in his teens. but after mvk was incarcerated she became completely estranged from the family. She did not ever have a good relationship with mvk but stayed for a while because her father was actually kind to his granddaughter/her daughter, something she never had for herself. franziska especially resents her for not being around when miles "chose death."

kay: she had relatives to take care of her after byrne died. her relationship with edgeworth is kind of awkward in that she admittedly does see some of byrne in him and edgeworth in turn has a protectiveness over kay that he doesn't realize are slightly dadly feelings as well. but kay is also almost an adult when they meet so she's never adopted or anything like that nor do they really go out and admit they see each other like this.

kay is roommates with seb but they're buddies and that's it lol

I forgot that the whole REASON I started watching boardwalk empire was because I was doing research on the zone rouge and ww1 facial prosthetics for a hetal!a fanfiction 💀💀💀 got so sidetracked I fell into a new obsession. Richard does that to people.

FACE fam centric set immediately after WW1 with them basically tending to their mental/physical wounds and trying to rebuild the world. The boys’ vision took a hit, Arthur is mostly physically unscathed(perks of being an island), but fran… lost most of the lower half of his face. and it doesn’t heal right away, it actually takes a couple years for the tissue to grow back into something presentable. And until then he wears a prosthesis ofc. flash forward to now, the corner of Fran’s mouth is still pulled tight by faded scar tissue and the range of motion in his neck isn’t what it used to be. Basically me poking around that “superhuman healing” trait and what it actually means. i don’t think it means they have these perfect, scarless bodies without any physical health issues. their bodies repair themselves but repair and restore don’t mean the same thing. And how much do permanent changes to their land/people affect them? Even a century after WW1, there are still acres of French land that are totally inhospitable to life and will be for hundreds of years. What kind of effect does that have on Fran’s physical body? Even though he’s in good health overall, does he(and other nations) still feel the aches and pains of millennia of violence? Surely significant losses of life and land or particularly brutal events have a lasting impact on their bodies. Interesting indeed
