Combined Six Harmonies Cultivation Method

I've been busy celebrating the end of my intensive Chinese class by binge-watching my way through Fox Spirit Matchmaker. I had planned to go back to posting about my figs right afterwards... but... during a big block of work travel fell into watching Mysterious Lotus Casebook (as excellent as everyone says and then some, highly recommend). After that, I figured I'd be back to posting about my figs. And THEN - well, then Gong Jun started showing up in some absolutely incredible behind-the-scenes-pics in his new role as Su Muyu. Dear reader, I had no choice (none! zero!) but to immediately binge-watch my way through all existing episodes of the Tales of Dark River donghua*, as well as start working my way through Blood of Youth. You understand. I know you do!**

BUT, in the meantime, I've also been slowly and steadily working my way through photographing my figs that continue to arrive in shipment after shipment. I have built up quite the backlog, so I'd better get to posting them!

Today we have Armory figs, from episode 36. These cute chonks commemorate this moment:

We've seen this armory scene before in fig form - quite a long time ago here and much more recently, in a building block version.

I remember watching this scene in shock - I had no idea what was coming. What a gut-wrenching, gorgeous scene. I love every bit of it.

These figs arrived safe and sound in their protective polystyrene box. I have to say I've had (crossing fingers, knock on wood) very good luck with this packing so far. Most figs I've gotten have arrived perfectly intact.

The figs came with the platform base and the figs themselves.

The paper cover peeled off from what turned out to be a sticker. I had thought it was going to be a magnet or something, so I was a bit surprised. The sticker ended up VERY securely sticking to the metal disk - I tried pulling it off to better reposition the top part, but no luck. It was on to stay for good.

As you can see, the metal disk makes it spin. The resin disk isn't perfectly round - it's a little more handmade than precision made, and I didn't stick the sticker on in the most optimal position, so it doesn't spin quite as easily or freely as it might. Which is fine! I'm not going to be playing with it, it's just in my display case.

Here they are! These two little cuties are just finished performing the ritual, and Zhou Zishu has just opened his eyes to see that something very strange has happened to his zhiji's hair...

This is a pretty good angle to see Lao Wen's face - these figs are so tiny and they are so close to each other that it's difficult to actually get their faces in the picture.

We see A-Xu's hair bun here, minus the hairpin of course. I must say I really hoped they managed to pull it out of the door when they left the armory, assuming the avalanche didn't shatter it into a hundred pieces.

This is a nice shot of Lao Wen's guan - very stylized as you can see.

I like how they included the Yin Yang book under their hands.

A-Xu's little shocked face is just too cute. Sorry A-Xu, I know this is a heartbreaking moment for you!

All that white hair. I think everyone will agree with me that no other show has managed to have a white wig quite as beautiful as post-ritual Wen Kexing. They did a gorgeous job of layering a slightly darker grey at the roots and pale grey/white in the rest of it, to give it the most natural looking effect. All the stark white wigs I've been seeing (yes, particularly as I've been watching Blood of Youth) tend to look pretty fake.

You can see the grey disk the figs are on isn't quite perfectly circular. It's not as off-balance as it looks here, some of this is the angle and the shadows, but it's definitely different from the perfect circle of the base.

And we're back around to the front again. These are really tiny figures - I think the fig maker decided to make them a bit smaller so that when you add the podium the entire thing isn't too big.

Here's a comparison between a normal sized fig - our poor A-Xu after he's been rescued from the Tianchuang prison (have I posted about this one? I'll have to check). As you can see, even the combined podium + figs is quite a bit smaller height wise from a regular fig.

Here's the closest I could get my camera to Lao Wen's face - not much of a close-up, but it's the best I could do! You can see his rosy little cheeks. You can also see Gong Jun's beauty mark there right under his eye.

Sheesh it was hard to get a close up of A-Xu's little face. I think the shot we got earlier as I rotated the fig around was better than this one. You can barely see one of Zhang Zhehan's beauty marks - the other one is definitely there, just blurred out due to my phone's inability to focus in.

There's no text on the Yin Yang Book, but it does have some nice fold lines to show where it would fold back up.

Ah, here's the best angle to show the almost-a-perfect-circle-but-not-quite of the top disk.

No fig card or box art for this one, which is too bad, it would have been awfully cute!

Asian dramas and relationship dynamics (Pt.2)

There are my favorite familial and (supposedly) non-romantical dynamics as a list.

Brotherly love

Drama: The Untamed / 陈情令 Characters: Wei Wuxian & Jiang Wanyin Screentime: Secondary

My favorite brother couple! They tore my heart into million pieces and it's still broken. There is jealousy and love and difficult moral choices between them. Wei Wuxian is an extraordinary man, as the main hero should be. He is brave enough to go against the rules if he feels it's right thing to do, also he is ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good and hides all of his pain tightly inside. Jiang Cheng is a mere person. He is not strong (or insane) enough to put everything on the line, because he shoulders responsibilities for his sect. Although they love each other, Wei Wuxian is ready to die for the truth and chooses to fight if fight is inevitable. Jiang Cheng tries to go the path of "minor evil" and sacrifice his sense of justice in order to save as much as possible. The both views are OK and each goes the chosen by himself path and bears consequences of this choice. Consequences are awful. They are traumatizing. And, what is the biggest pain of mine, they never discussed it. They never found out about sacrifices they both made for each other. They never found out that they still love each other as brothers.

Drama: My Journey to You /云之羽 Characters: Gong Shangjue & Gong Yuanzhi Screentime: Secondary About these two I wrote two posts here and here . In a nutshell: one is carrying the responsibilities for everything and anything, strictly follows the rules and teaches his younger cousin how to live this life. The little cousin is yandere, who is obsessed with his older cousin, has no conscience and does his best to make his cousin's life better. I like this unusual dynamics: they both love each other and care for each other on the same level, even if one of them is yandere.

Master-servant relationship

Drama: Word of Honor / 山河令 Characters: Gu Xiang & Wen Kexing Screentime: Secondary I like this type of dynamics when servants become someone more than just servants to their masters. Chinese drama makers love it and use it a lot, but this scene was so powerful that made me cry. Beautiful transformation from a servant to a family member (unfortunately, post mortem).

Seeking out love

Drama: Fangs of Fortune / 大梦归离 Characters: Li Lun & Zhao Yuanzhou Screentime: Secondary

Once Li Lun and Zhao Yuanzhou used to be boyfriends. Then they broke up for reason not really understandable (at least for Li Lun), but Li Lun can't get over it and tries to get attention of his ex friend back with pretty villainous means. Him not being able to leave this situation and to move on will be the main reason he will die in the end.

Drama: Word of Honor / 山河令 Characters: Xie Wang & Zhao Jing Screentime: Secondary

Zhao Jing adopted a very skillful and absolutely ruthless killer as his son. The killer is self-confident and does his job playfully, but his weakness is his passionate desire to be loved by his adoptive father. He feels that Zhao Jing just uses him for his skills and will throw him away as soon as his adoptive father will not need his skills anymore, so he even paralyze his adoptive father to force him being always near. He ends up not being capable to choose his life over his father's and dies with him. A very sad type of addiction with "A little mermaid" type of moral: you can bring the whole world upside down, but if one doesn't love you, one will not, no matter what.

Drama: Painted Skin 2020 /画皮 Characters: Wang Sheng & Xiao Wei Screentime: Main In this B̶L̶ version of Painted Skin Chinese legend the fox demon is male and wants to get one of the humans that brought him home. But humans love each other, no one is interested in a fox demon, so he makes them pay for their previous kindness with blood, sweat and tears. In the end the demon gets a human heart, feels something (e.g. how hard it is to be a human) and makes up one more lie, giving to the soul of the man he wanted for himself a strand of his own hair instead of human's wife's hair in order to meet him in another life. The same moral as in the previous drama. The same sadness.

In another game, members of the same team need to grab a basin and sit in it together. Junjun grabs one and signals Miles to sit with him. It's chaos, and adorable.

Bonus: As "punishment" for losing the game, the losers have to dance wearing cute costumes. GJ didn't actually lose, everyone just wanted to embarrass him see him dance. 😅

wen kexing: it’s gotta be a dramatic villain-ass pet. maybe a weird bird? hm no birds need too much socializing. reptile i think. something that looks uninterested and scary and that he definitely puts a lot of effort into keeping alive and getting its unusual food behind the scenes. it absolutely has to be something that you probably shouldn’t keep as a pet but somehow it’s working anyway. like... hm. biiiig python maybe. burmese. got it when it was small, got warned “you know those guys get really big right?”, smiled unsettlingly at the person selling it to him.

zhou zishu: ohhhh the temptation to give him a hegehog for the metaphor is sooooo strong but i will resist bc it is a) too easy and b) makes me think of kinnporsche. fox also very tempting for Reasons. i think what zzs actually gets is some kind of animal that should not in fact be a pet but he accidentally rescued it and now it can’t be released back into the wild and he decides to keep it. (this is not on brand for him at all, of course.) so i DON’T know what that might be in china... time to google. that was unhelpful. maybe like... a squirrel. such a fucking pain in the ass but also very cute and frustratingly endearing. again, not that that’s super on brand for zzs or anything.

han ying: han ying is the one who has a bird. a really smart bird that might outlive him if he’s not careful. it’s what’s keeping him alive, actually, he knows he has to keep taking care of this bird that sometimes yells at him and sometimes bothers him while he’s working and also he and the (why am i saying bird generically it’s clearly a parrot, probably a parakeet) parrot are each other’s company, despite them really being social creatures who need more interaction.

Have always wanted to try drawing comic panels in watercolor, I’m having so much fun drawing this, but kinda forgot to draw the pink leaf patterns on wen kexing’s clothes, oh well 🤭

Masked Prince

Han Ye week continues with this adorable fig! Today's crown prince figurine was inspired by a very cute scene from Episode 8 of The Legend of Anle.

Han Ye wears this green and white robe and holds a mask in this scene below. He and Anle are disguised as commoners, hence the dressed down version of them both:

You'll notice that the mask Han Ye has here is a bunny mask. He's also wearing a pale grey-green over robe.

The fig, however, is holding a fox mask, and is missing the grey-green over robe, wearing only the darker green under robe. His hair is also a much fluffier, messier version that is sporting thick bangs.

This look (minus the fox mask) comes from this subsequent series of scenes a few minutes later in Episode 8, where Han Ye and Anle have messed up their hair and dirtied up their faces and robes to take their commoner disguise one step further to flood victim disguise:

Since him and Anle are in disguise among the flood victims, they are definitely not playing around with beautiful masks.

I am not sure if the fig maker took some creative license (which I'm all for), or if I'm missing a scene. Episode 8 is the only one where he wears this outfit, and he doesn't even wear it for the entire episode, so I can't think of any other scene it could be. That being said, I have only watched this show once, unlike Word of Honor, which I have watched an {undisclosed} number of times.

Regardless, this fig is looking super cute in his little protective box!

He's even cuter out of the box! I really like the Han Ye in disguise look (as well as all his other looks, let's be honest), so I'm really happy to have him.

I like how the fig maker echoed the fox mask in his eyes, as well as picked up the color in his robes in his eyes. It's just a beautiful figure all the way around.

As you might be able to tell by the fact that he's on a stand, this fig absolutely would not stand on his own. He toppled right over backwards no matter what. These days, I don't even bother with fig stickers or museum putty or anything else - if they're even slightly weighted to one side or the other I glue them right down.

He has his hand behind his back here in the classic Wen Kexing elegant young master pose.

This fig doesn't have quite the flowing locks of other figs, but it gets the job done!

You can see he has no guan in his hair, or any ornament at all. This is definitely our prince in disguise, although whether it's his commoner disguise or his flood victim disguise, I don't know.

I really do like the big chunky bangs, it frames his fig face very beautifully.

The mask is quite lovely too - it has the some beautiful leaf and flower motifs.

The costume is spot on for his disguise though - even the loosely tied knot on his left side of his belt.

Here's a close up of the mask. Pretty, isn't it?

You can't really see it from this bottoms-up angle, but he's got the wonderful detail of pants on under his robes.

I always particularly love this little detail!

His unadorned hair here - it's so rare we see this.

I watched the video pretty closely, but I couldn't tell if there was a black fabric band around his ponytail or if it was just his hair wrapped around it. I'm guessing by the look of this it was indeed a fabric band.

Well, we're going to continue our Han Ye week into the weekend! Come back tomorrow to see the next fig celebrating our elegant crown prince.

When Two Worlds Collide - demoniqt - 山河令 | Word of Honor (TV 2021) [Archive of Our Own]

Summary:

Zhou Zishu has questions about the supernatural world. Wen Kexing introduces him to some of the creatures that are staying at his backyard.

Notes:

This is an interlude that happened before the epilogue of Arc 1. Basically introducing more of the supernatural world. You might recognise a character here that made a cameo in Chapter 18 of Arc 1.

BL dramas can be amazing but let it take place in the historical/costume period and fighting side by side against enemies, jumping off cliffs, one protects the other from all the clans who want to hunt their "friend" down and deep in their greed, adopt children who lost family, all of them being one happy family for the time being, some flirting here and there, getting drink, one coming to the other's aide when they're hurt, the trust they have for each other, them learning each other's past, one gets jealous when someone comes in the scene, the smile and glances they give each other as you can see the glow in their face AND them devoting to die by each other's side because what is life without them *Chef's kiss* 😘

Do I want to write something without having to plan it? Then I should write 1

Do I want to write something while also finishing up planning the big points of it? I should write 2

Do I want to write something and just see where it takes me? Then I can write 3

But nope. Instead I'm going to write nothing. Makes sense
