Monday, January 27: Gamma Ray, "Rain"

Maybe Kai Hansen saw how Helloween got a little more attention by putting out a third record under the Keepers banner despite it having a completely different lineup, or maybe he was looking to bounce back from the muted reception of Majestic, but either way he presented Gamma Ray’s ninth album as a sequel to their most acclaimed record even though nobody asked for one and  Land of the Free wasn’t a concept album to begin with.  And while of course Land of the Free II had nothing to do with its predecessor, and the lineup was significantly different, at least this iteration of the band had been in place for 10 years so it had credibility, and even if Hansen dominated the songwriting as usual he gave room for his bandmates to deliver their own compositions, and “Rain” was a Henjo Richter number that reflected how in sync Gamma Ray was because it could’ve easily come from Hansen or any other member.  The track was effortlessly soaring and anthemic in a way that reflected just how naturally this sort of thing came to the fourpiece, almost to the point of bordering on rote.  Hansen’s vocals were beginning to show the slightest signs of wear, as his yelp sounded a bit thinner, but the riffs and melodies were sturdy as ever, and Dan Zimmermann’s drumming was forceful and metallic while focusing on steadiness rather than going full power metal.  “Rain” was a strong latter day Gamma Ray track that proved the band still had something to offer, even if they had decisively moved on to their legacy phase and even gave that way with their album title.

Talk Show - Red/White

Talk Show are a fourpiece post punk rock band based in South East London. They got together in 2017 while students at Goldsmiths, University of London, they are comprised of vocalist Harrison Swann, bassist George Sullivan, drummer Chloe MacGregor, and guitarist Tom Holmes. Red/White out now and is the third single from their forthcoming debut album Effigy.

Bad Nerves- PopPunk?

Badnerves is a newer PopPunk/ Hyperpop band from London. The fourpiece band makes highly energetic music.

I can speake from experienece, taht their concerts do not lack any of that energy live ! At first I was afraid, that the singer wouldn`t sound anywhere near the same as on the album, but, to my suprise, he sounded exactly the same !

And -Safe to say- the crowd was going nuts !

295: Booker T. & the M.G.'s // Melting Pot

Melting Pot Booker T. & the M.G.'s 1970, Stax

Generally thought to be the best LP by the legendary instrumental soul combo Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Melting Pot has the pros and cons of any record of its ilk. On the good side: You have the opportunity to hear the band behind some of the greatest soul singers of all time truly get their teeth into a groove and work it out like nobody’s business, resulting in a clearing house of deeply funky breakbeats, keyboard vamps, chicken scratch licks, and smoky vibes that put a strut into, like, filing your taxes or drying the dishes. Both sides open with eight-minute jams that showcase the fourpiece’s earthy chemistry and pack more fireworks than a ponderous Zeppelin voyage of twice the duration. The title track is the obvious classic here, but don’t sleep on the “Frankenstein”-esque “Chicken Pox” or the peculiar shake of “Fuquawi.”

The downside is that, great as the band is, unless you are an aspiring soul musician this does feel more like (extremely cool) mood music than something you’re going to listen to intently for a full forty minutes. The titles of the songs sound like the names you give to riff ideas (“L.A. Jazz Song”; “Hi Ride”), and without a vocalist to lend singalong hooks or sweatbucket emotion, the songs frequently have a meandering quality. On my first listens to songs like “Back Home” and “Chicken Pox” I could’ve sworn I was listening to instrumental takes on familiar Stax singles whose titles hung teasingly out of reach. The album also ends with the peculiar “Sunny Monday,” a bit of orchestrated Procul Harum-esque pseudo prog complete with strummy Ren Faire acoustic guitar that reminds you there were white guys in this band from the beginning.

On balance though, Melting Pot catches one of the greatest R&B bands to ever do it chopping it up at a sizzling temperature. It’s a very-nice-to-have for appreciators of the classic Stax sound, and an essential for real heads.

Carlton Melton are amped up Northern California fourpiece who deal in the arts of krautrock fuelled mind-melting psychedelia. Warm ripping guitars as well as synthfunkpunk rhythms. These cats are definitely children of Spacemen 3 and Neu! All instrumental so there’s no singer to fuck up the vibes. The opening track is 11 minutes long and it just keeps on flowing from there. This is like their tenth album, not sure of the exact number, but some how every record gets better. This is a near perfect record, my only gripe is it ends.

"mcr=gerard way and some long-suffering normies" is such a funny take to me because mcr is Nothing if not a committee of weird little freaks...it's the reason they worked as a group and it's their entire appeal! they started the band as a bunch of unapologetically neurodivergent weirdos in an increasingly pretentious and insular scene saying hey it's okay if you don't fit in either! i know mx way sets the bar high but they're simply the beacon to which all the other weirdos flock

Everything you need to know about Four Pieces.

Well, in my spare time I want to write this to you all about Four Pieces and something more about it. Sorry, the book is with Bahasa but I use English to elaborate it because I don’t know it’s hard to express something with Bahasa, it might ruin the real meaning from what I suppose to say. Believe me if you have to handle more than two languages in your life it would be good also sucks sometimes because your brain might confused in a minute or so. Don’t be jealous, mother tongue, I can’t get used to it in daily to be honest.

Anyway, back to the main topic, Four Pieces. No, it’s not pieces of shits from all of me. You guys really smart to assume it was all about me. But thank you so much that means you have read it, kept it in your mind and it made you think that it was all about the author, Huh?

Basically it’s about mental illness as I said before. 4 mental health issues. Depression, anxiety, self harm and bipolar disorder. But I didn’t explain details in the book, it’s just go with the flow with the plots from the point of view of the main character, Louisa Tan. And No, it’s not about love story, sorry if I disappointed you. If you want another “love story” I was working on it with the next one, just saying.

So, why depression, anxiety, self harm and bipolar disorder? Where did I get all those scary things? Scary? Mental illness scared you more than all those human version of corruptors, liars and their puppets? Funny.

I’ve been dealing with depression and anxiety with different years. I got depression when I was 18, one year after graduation from high school. I have few friends also been dealing with the same stuffs like anxiety, self harm and bipolar disorder and believe me they are all amazing people.

One day my best friend lost her father. I called her for the first time after been separated for years. She moved aboard and living with her husband and kid. We lost contact since I came into her wedding day 5 or 6 years ago I guess. I called her, we talked for hours and days and all drafts written in my head. I opened my laptop and started to write the first draft. In one day I finished it and the next day I just do some editing and proof reading myself till it gets done. It was perfect and amazing how she inspired me lots to continue this. She knows I love to write since we were in junior high. So when the book been published I told her about it and she was shocked and said, how can I get that book, Viv! I told her she would get one from me. I know she’s proud of me. She wrote me message and it’s beautiful.

There are lots of long articles I want to write to share to you but I have my limit here. So the next one would be great storytelling.
