Happy founding of Rome pretend day! Found my photos from January 2019 when I was in Rome, but was absolutely indifferent to it 🥲 Oh, how much I desire to go back there now!

Hello Aeneas didn’t found Rome, he founded the city (Lavinium) that founded the city (Alba Longa) that founded Rome (by Remus & Romulus).
If like wannabe world overlords you like to learn your mythological founding stories without having to read the actual epic poem, or you just want a fun refresher, here’s one to the tune of The Fresh Prince (because everyone knows The Fresh Prince):

have been losing my shit over the fact that 1. there's a passage in polybius's history where he tells us that the tyrant demetrius of phalerum once made a giant mechanical snail to parade through athens and trail slime everywhere 2. people have been trying to figure out how this massive snail worked since at least 1937

For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)
I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).
The general pitch is as follows :
AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.
In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.
They bond :)
NB: I commissioned another piece, go take a look :D

‘Incredible’ Mosaics Were Found in an Ancient Luxury Home in Rome
Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano has called the works “an authentic treasure.”
Researchers working in the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum in Rome have shared their discovery of luxurious mosaic-tiled rooms found in an ancient home on the site, which they believe may have belonged to a Roman senator. Created from shells, glass, white marble, and Egyptian blue tiles, the mosaics have been described by Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano as “an authentic treasure”.
The “rustic” mosaics, found on the grounds surrounding the Colosseum in the heart of the city, date to the late Republican Age, in the last decades of the second century B.C.E., and show a series of figurative scenes. They once decorated a townhouse, or domus, owned by an upper class citizen. Italy’s Ministry of Culture have said that “due to the complexity of the scenes depicted” and their age, the mosaics are “without comparison.”

One mosaic depicts a coastal city with towers and porticos, with three large ships floating by on the ocean waves. The culture ministry believes this could be a reference to naval victories achieved by the owner of the home, which is believed to have been a Roman senator. This is supported by historical sources describing the area as having been occupied by such high-ranking members of society.
The decorated walls were likely located in the home’s dining rooms, where luxurious banquets would be hosted, and guests at these events were likely wowed with “spectacular water games,” according to the culture ministry, based on the presence of lead pipes set into the walls.
In the reception room, an extremely well preserved decorated stucco featuring landscapes and figures was also discovered. Other designs include vines and lotus leaves flowing from vases, musical instruments, and tridents.

The mosaic walls were first discovered near the Colosseum in 2018, but excavation at the site will continue into 2024, and more rooms could be discovered. Alfonsina Russo, the Director of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum, has said that once the domus is full uncovered, “we will work intensely to make this place, among the most evocative of ancient Rome, accessible to the public as soon as possible.”

I forgot about how killing eve's writing just starts getting progressively worse the more season 3 goes on. Like girl what happened to my show.......... my characters......... what did they DO to villanelle...................... and where is EVE
#eve is gone for like half the season#and villanelle has suddenly developed empathy and started caring about killing...........#like listen ok I get not wanting to kill anymore. especially after she killed her mother#but it doesn't justify her personality doing a complete 180 like that??#like suddenly she cares when she kills people. suddenly she's not being manipulative with eve anymore#like. I could buy into a character arc like that if it made sense and didn't come out of nowhere. but it came out of NOWHERE#it's like the writer suddenly decided she was gonna make villanelle a better person#but didn't really put that much effort into setting that change up#everything that happens as season 3 goes on only really works if you don't think too much about it#and it's like the closer you get to the end the more they're asking you to suspend your disbelief#which got rlly hard for me on that last episode tbh. as much as I think the scene on the bridge is cute#all I could think about was 'villanelle feels so off. I don't think she'd act like this at all in previous seasons'#and the change just doesn't feel earned#maybe it could make sense but you have to really dig to try to find reasons why. the show sure doesn't give you many on-screen#just like it doesn't give many answers on-screen to anything at all LMAO RIGHT ON EP1#we never learn who found eve at rome and how#we never learn much of anything about how she got where she is#we never see the main couple TALK about what happened in rome. but they're suddenly cool with it after 1 fight on the bus#AND I LOVE THE BUS KISS it's probably the best scene out of the whole season#but god I wish it wasn't the only moment where we see them hashing things out#and then on ep1 there's kenny's death being used as a plot device......#and then the investigation of his murder also being 1 huge plot device#which kinda goes nowhere besides getting mentioned here and there and at the end being like#'oh! konstatin killed kenny!! do you guys remember that this whole season started off being about kenny?? remember that you guys???'#like. bold thing to do when 90% of the season wasn't about any of that#it just felt so disjointed :/ I was so sad on this rewatch bc I loved s1&2 so much............. and I forgot how bad it got after#and I know s4 is about to get worse........ oh boy#I'm almost considering not rewatching it tbh#killing eve#sleep.txt

Everytime I listen to the Ancient Rome Sidequest it destroys me emotionally. But who knows, maybe somewhere there's a world where nothing terrible happens and it's just Sasha and Grizzop having fun adventures in ancient Rome.

Ancient Roman Marble Head Found Beneath Basilica in Rome
A stunning stone head, likely to belong to a Roman deity or philosopher, has been discovered during excavations at the 5th-century Christian Basilica of Santo Stefano, within Rome’s Tombe di Via Latina archaeological park. The carved marble fragment, larger than life, is complete with a carefully carved beard and solemn facial expression, and was discovered embedded in the basilica’s foundations, suggesting it had been reused in medieval construction.
The archaeologists first saw flowing marble locks breaking through the earth before a complete profile of the head emerged. Even after centuries of burial and thick encrustations of mortar, the fine details in the hair and beard remained astonishingly preserved.
While thick mortar covers parts of the face of the sculpture, preliminary research indicates the sculpture dates to circa the 2nd century CE. The head may be that of a Roman god such as Jupiter or Serapis, or even a philosopher. Though its initial identity is unknown, its reuse in a Christian context provides us with significant information regarding the complex cultural interplay of Late Antique Rome—a period of the 4th to 6th centuries CE, marked by the gradual shift from paganism to Christianity.

The statue has been transferred to Matera, a city that is firmly dedicated to preserving culture and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was then placed into the care of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro (ICR), where it is now undergoing restoration. The project also involves students from the Scuola di Alta Formazione per il Restauro, who are assisting in meticulous documentation, technical examination, and diagnostic studies.
Experts at the ICR hope to not only restore the physical integrity of the piece but also determine its original function and historic context. They are exploring whether the head originally belonged to a monumental statue or had a religious function before it was buried within the basilica walls. Careful removal of mortar might still uncover inscriptions or symbols that could give additional leads.
The reuse of pagan statues in Christian buildings was not uncommon in Late Antiquity, but each one is a special case. This particular find contributes to efforts to grasp how Roman society changed from its imperial, polytheistic origins to a Christianized world.

I like to imagine, in the 'canon', before Machete's assassination, as they drift apart, Machete starts having terrible nightmares. A distorted version of himself, resembling only the worst parts of him hurting everyone he loves (aka Vasco) and potentially even killing him. As he realizes how dangerous he is he starts distancing himself, hurting Vasco even more in the process. I even imagine them exchanging some pretty heated and mean spirited words (especially Machete) a few hours before he inevitably dies.
All that can tie back to that other anon had said about Vasco having nightmares. He feels guilty and that he's responsible for what happened.
Oh boy, that's terribly sad ;^;
Machete had been spiralling for a while before he was ultimately assassinated. I'd like to think they were still very close and not actively drifting apart, but there was definitely some tension in the air. Machete had been retreating into his shell, consumed by mounting paranoia and self-loathing and felt that it was actively harmful and dangerous for Vasco, the light of his life, to be near him. Vasco was worried of course, but they had had rough patches before and Machete had always managed to outrun his demons that far, he believed things would work out eventually like they always do. He had no reason to think it would end this time.
