Country roads in West Virginia lead to serenity, history

Sometimes, country roads do more than take us home; they fuel the soul and restore us back to whole, especially after an unsettling period. The Bavarian Inn Resort & Brewing Company www.bavarianinnwv.com , Shepherdstown, West Virginia's elegant, European enclave, accomplishes this feat. And it makes the perfect haven to call home, while exploring not only Shepherdstown, the state’s oldest town as well as nearby charming and historic locales like Harpers Ferry and Charles Town, West Virginia, plus Frederick and Antietam, Maryland. Civil war and history buffs will appreciate touring these historic towns, and at the same time, experience the vibrancy of a college town, since Shepherdstown is home to Shepherd University.
With European roots and West Virginia heritage, the resort has mastered hospitality with its signature Bavarian-style accommodations, culinary expertise with a German flair and its latest addition, the highly praised Bavarian Brothers Brewing Company. The 72-rooms, many with fireplaces and stunning views is perched atop the curvy, lilting Potomac River and the welcoming brewery are a must-visit and stay-overnight-kind-of-place. Infinity 101 is the dramatic infinity pool and casual poolside bar-eatery that feels like an oasis, and it is a so inviting during any summer visit. Why 101? The pool’s cascading edge is 101 feet above the Potomac. The property’s slogan, “Where the only thing we overlook is the Potomac!,” held true again during a recent, return visit. Other on- property amenities include tennis, basketball and bocce courts, fire pits, and S’mores, and fitness room. Resort guests can golf at Cress Creek golf course, a mile away.
Within walking distance you’ll find shopping, restaurants and coffee shops, boat, pedal and paddle bike rentals. A short drive away are, Antietam Battlefield, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, River Riders Adventure Park with zip-lines and canopy tours, Hollywood Casino, as well as other happening breweries and scenic wineries.
Food options at the Bavarian range from a formal dining experience in the Potomac Room to a casual poolside snack. If you want the fine dining experience in a more casual atmosphere, the Brewpub makes the perfect setting, serving up the same menu. A picture window gives you a glance of the brew master creating his everchanging brews. Although now retired, two of the brews pay homage to the founders of the Bavarian, Carol and Erwin Asam. Their sons, Christian and David are now at the helm and are thrilled to see their vision has come to fruition. “Erwin’s Angry Ale” celebrates their dad’s “German Engineering.” David mentioned that his dad is known as a man of incredible work ethic, vision and velocity to accomplish all tasks and this IPA lives up to its namesake. ”Carol’s Royal Stone” celebrates mom, who is aka “Queen of the Bavarian.” She is a native of Sheffield England and the brothers said, “just like “her majesty,” This beer is expressive, and no nonsense, yet incredibly graceful on the palate. “Brew Recipes are constantly being conceptualized and implemented, and we take a fun and whimsical approach to naming them,” said David.
The beer garden’s fire pit, sitting like a crown atop the hill out-back, offers a charming spot to enjoy after-dinner drinks; even better, families are invited to roast marshmallows with s’more kits, before retiring to their guestroom.
During this visit, I chose to experience dinner in the inviting and visually alluring brewpub since it had been under construction during a prior stay a few years ago. The German Pretzel, stuffed with crab, could be a meal in itself, taking up the entire dinner plate. The huge pretzel is chock full of lump crab and doused in a three-cheese sauce made with Bavarian Brothers Lager. Remoulade and mustard accompany it for additional dipping. Avocado fries piqued my interest, having never seen this on a menu before. Avocado wedges are coated with Panko and flash fried to the perfect crispness and served with tomato salad and a cilantro emulsion. The house made spaetzle is prepared with Gruyere cheese, Black Forest ham and asparagus tips. The fish n’ chips is coated in a batter made unsurprisingly with Bavarian Brothers Brewery beer and expertly fried to a golden brown, served with hand cut steak fries.
No German meal is complete without apple strudel. The flakiness of the dough and the not-too-sweet filling put this strudel on the top of the list of apple strudels of which I have indulged. The beer accompaniment I tried, Himbeere Weiss (Raspberry Wheat), is a nod to the Asam family and their German roots. Perfectly refreshing for the hot day! It gets brewed using organic raspberry puree and German White wheat. I found it to be light on the palate, balancing fruitiness with wheat tones.
The breakfast menu offers the standard breakfast fare as well as a few specialties. I savored, the Chesapeake Benedict; poached eggs, Black Forest ham, jumbo lump crabmeat on an English muffin topped with Hollandaise sauce. And, oh, those warm homemade biscuits…. you’ll want to take a few home.
For lunch one day, I devoured the Reuben sandwich. Lean corned beef, Swiss cheese, homemade sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing pack the marble rye. The accompanying German potato salad is superb. The recipe for the sauerkraut and the resorts famous Jaegerschnitzel can be found at https://bit.ly/3repPP5 The Bavarian Brother’ Brewing Signature Burger is eye-catching, probably the tallest burger I have ever seen; a Hereford beef patty topped with seared bratwurst, pickled red cabbage, Gruyere cheese on a brioche bun and that isn’t enough, top it off with a fried egg!
Wine connoisseurs won’t be disappointed with the award-winning (Wine Spectator) wine list containing more than 600 labels from around the globe, including specially cellared German Rieslings.

In walking distance from the inn, the eclectic and dynamic downtown of Shepherdstown offers a wide range of culinary and retail establishments.
Betty’s, 114 E German St., is where locals and visitors alike eat breakfast. The ambience will take you back in time. Nothing fancy, but this is what makes the place special and welcoming. Comfort food at its best. A must is the signature crab cakes; all lump crab meat, mixed with a special recipe and grilled to perfection. Another specialty is the sausage gravy, receiving accolades in Popular Mechanics magazine. Roast beef is made in-house, as are the vintage-style pies, cakes and puddings.
Regina, the owner since 2001, suggested those who are very hungry try the double-decker Rumsey Burger: two freshly ground burgers, cheese, lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island dressing. She brought me a sample of what I thought was a retro recipe, beef and pickle salad. It reminded me of those potluck lunches of years past.
The Press Room, www.pressroomwv.com 129 W. German St., is in the building that once housed the local newspaper’s printing press. I started with the roasted beet salad. Tender, sweet beets are drizzled with balsamic vinegar, sprinkled with just enough Gorgonzola cheese. A creative take on a salmon entrée is penne with pieces of both fresh and smoked salmon, with the latter adding the perfect smoke flavor to the dish. A light cream sauce with bits of fresh tomato and capers coated the al dente- cooked penne and fish. The veal chop special was enticing, stuffed with prosciutto and Fontina cheese then crusted in Panko and pan fried. The beautifully plated, pillowy panna cotta served with fresh berries and finished with fig vincotto (rich and aromatic reduction of Italian crushed grapes with notes of fig) was the sweet ending to a delightful dinner.
Located at 108 E. German St., Maria’s Taqueria serves up one of my favorite snacks: chips and guacamole, and it is good. The quesadilla is large and stuffed with melted cheese and choice of meat, vegetables or beans. Sour cream, pico de gallo and salsa top off the dish. Maria is proud that all of the meat served is sourced locally and raised humanely, without antibiotics or hormones. The plantains with jalapeno aioli is a must. And, a meal here won’t break the bank.
Popcorn lovers must visit Mountaineer Popcorn www.mountaineerpopcorn.com , 102 E. German St., where the non-GMO popcorn is grown in the northern Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia. Popcorn purists will enjoy the traditional theater-style buttered popcorn. Those who want to step it up a notch and explore unique flavors such as dill pickle, loaded baked potato, pizza or buffalo wing will find it here. I enjoyed the cheddar and caramel mix, a tasty blend of sweet and salty. Coming off of July 4th “Freedom Crunch,” is a patriotic pick-me-up; kettle corn that’s enrobed with white chocolate, mixed with Chex cereal, and red, white and blue M& M’s.
A stop at Shepherdstown Sweet Shop & Bakery, www.wvbakery.com 100 W. German St., is perfect for a steaming cappuccino, coffee or freshly baked pastry. The name is deceiving since breakfast and lunch are served as well. You must try the nationally famous holiday stollen, available year-round. I am thankful they ship it, too, since it is the best I have had, and every so often I need to have my “fix.” You, too, will see why, after tasting it; rum-soaked raisins, dates, pecans, combined with sweet butter and specially spiced flour, and hand-shaped around a marzipan center. The baked loaf is brushed with melted butter and rolled in two kinds of sugar. Worth every calorie! The huge and moist macaroons are another favorite. Their breads are worthy of taking home a loaf…. or two, exactly what I did; English muffin bread and sourdough.
Lost Dog Coffee, www.lostdogcoffee.com 134 E. German St., is a popular spot for great coffee drinks and tea. A few sweet treats are available, too. The quirky and eclectic atmosphere with walls adorned with artwork makes it an interesting stop.
Visit Blue Moon Café, www.bluemooncafeshepherdstown.com 200 E High St., when the weather is conducive to outdoor dining. The area has a rushing stream and is covered with arching trees making your dining experience magical. The crab melts (crab and cheddar cheese melted over an English muffin, served in bite-sized wedges) is a dish I recall seeing in many community cookbooks. The eggplant lover I am, I ordered the Kimster (breaded eggplant, basil, pesto, fresh mozzarella cheese melted on a ciabatta roll), piled high, and I savored every bite. The Gobbler (smoked turkey, bacon, Russian dressing, melted Provolone on a Kaiser roll) I was informed is a popular sandwich. Those desiring vegetarian and gluten-free dishes will have many choices.
On the way out of town, a stop at Nutter’s Ice Cream, www.nuttersicecream.com 100 E. Main St., located in nearby Sharpsburg, was highly recommended, so it had to happen. I felt as if I were in a time capsule, based upon the vintage ambience of the interior of the historic building. Dozens of flavors adorn the see-through freezers. To begin the drive home, I opted for a coffee milkshake and the price…a lot less than I am used to. But bring cash, credit cards are not accepted.

Corn Dog is one versatile food that is available in different variants from cheesy variation to breakfast version and veggie versions. The corndogs are easy to eat and everyman’s food loved by millions of its fans. As to mark a special note for this versatile menu, National Corn Dog Day has been celebrated.
History of National Corn Dog Day
The National Corn Dog Day has been feasted since the year 1992. Brady Sahnow and Henry Otley have inaugurated the Day for the Corn Dog in Corvallis, Oregon. Since then this Day has been in celebration. The founders of this Day has created this celebration in honour of the saving grace of the corn dogs and the basketball which is the March Madness. Although the first observance of this food feast was informal and involved only corndogs and basketball, it was expanded in the later years with the inclusion of tater tots and beer. The Corndog Day is a celebration concerning basketball, the corn dog. Corn Dog is a sausage that is usually a hot dog placed on a stick which has been coated with a thick layer of cornmeal batter and finally deep fried. The German Texan sausage-makers have been credited with introducing the corn dog to the United States.
Corn Dogs were all the way came from the sausage-makers Germany to Texas and from there to other parts. The first official record found about the corn dog dates back to 1927 when a patent was filed in the US. During the late 1930s or early 1940s, corn dog has become the most convenient fair food as the whole meal was put on a stick and fried deep. Thus eating made simple for the fairgoers while taking in the exhibition. Since then corn dogs have gained incredible popularity at the events including fairs, sports arena, amusement parks, state fairs, country festivals, concerts, and have been in every other place where people prefer eating without using their hands. Corn dogs were even made available in the school’s lunches and the military vessels.
Corn dogs are most often served as the street food or as fast food. Almost any supermarket will have corn dogs as a frozen food which can be brought to heat it and served. Vendors and restaurateurs simply dip and fry their dogs just before serving to make it as a freshest preparation. The pre-made frozen corn dogs are also sold by some corn dog purveyors, which have been thawed at first and then fried again or browned in an oven. When it comes to the pre-made frozen corn dogs, the cornbread coating will lack its texture when heated in a microwave oven. The corn dogs are available in different variants, and it may vary from cheese to vegetarian corn dogs.
The cheesy variation of the corn dog is prepared either with the cheese-filled hot dog or the melted cheese between the hot dog and the breading. The cornbrat or corn brat is a corn dog made with the bratwurst instead of a wiener or hot dog using different meats in the dog like pork and turkey. The breakfast version of the corn dog is called pancake on a stick and includes a breakfast sausage instead of a hot dog and pancake batter instead of the cornmeal. The corn puppies or corn dog nuggets are the children’s favorite small corn dog variant served stickless as finger food. The vegetarian corn dogs and corn dog nuggets varients are prepared as the meatless alternatives.
How to Celebrate the National Corn Dog Day
Celebrating the National Corn Dog Day is very simple. Make sure you are indulging yourself with any variants of corn dogs to celebrate this Day. Start off with the pancake on a stick for your breakfast. Have the fresh dip and fried corn dog for your lunch. Buy the corn puppies for your children to make them enjoy this feast. You can even treat yourself with the pre-made frozen corn dogs. More than all if you are in fairs or sports arena, then take the chance to eat some corn dogs.

GRAB A BITE AT BRICKTOWN BREWERY
Not long after Bricktown Brewery (2040 E. Independence St., Springfield, 417-887-0100) opened in Springfield, I popped in for a visit with my husband and kids on a Sunday. We were there in time for an early dinner, but the place was already packed—bustling with noisy conversation and various sports that were broadcast on many, many screens. We sat down at a high-top, hungry and ready for some stick-to-your-ribs goodness. After our server brought us the avocado fries appetizer, giant plate of Nachosaurus nachos and cast iron skillet filled with steaming hot Green Chile & Chicken Mac and Cheese, we tucked in. Both the adults and the kids in our crew enjoyed the interesting takes on comfort food. The nachos were truly ridiculous—piled so high they toppled as soon as we dug in. But nachos are made to be messy and indulgent, and we loved every topping-heavy bite. My favorite was the mac and cheese, which had enough of a spicy kick to make things interesting, but not enough to send me to my water glass after every nibble. And although we all adored the fried avocado (so creamy!), their dipping sauces left a little something to be desired. All in all, our meal was delicious, indulgent and full of at least a few surprises. (Bonus fun fact: A couple of Bricktown’s own beers are brewed for the Springfield store at nearby Piney River Brewing Company, for a real Springfield infusion.) Read more here

The 38 Essential Chicago Restaurants
Superdawg’s founders, Maurie and Flaurie Berman, stand guard over this venerable Chicago drive-in as customers can spot those giant hot dog statues bearing their likenesses from miles away at the intersection of Devon, Nagle, and Milwaukee. Superdawg is a throwback dining experience where customers park their cars and talk to staff through crackling drive-in speakers and carhops bring out trays of food. Superdawg isn’t a traditional Chicago-style dog, but it is a tradition. It uses a proprietary thick all-beef sausage that comes with mustard, pickled green tomato, and chopped Spanish onions. This is all cradled in a box of crinkle fries.

What is quite possibly the first Michelin-starred brewpub lies on the North Side of Chicago. Creative beer selections are brewed on-site, which, combined with a beautiful Victorian-inspired space, make Band of Bohemia a one-of-a-kind operation in the entire country. The menu has plenty of veggie options, including a carrot that’s magical.

The best example of Chicago’s iconic Italian beef sandwiches exists outside of the city at the two suburban locations of Johnnie’s Beef. The space is a throwback as the original fast-food spot opened in 1961 in Elmwood Park and a second has since opened in Arlington Heights. The menu is simple: beefs, charcoal-grilled Italian sausages, and hot dogs. Pepper-and-egg sandwiches are also available daily; they’re mostly aimed at Catholic customers during Lent Fridays needing a “meat-free” option. Johnnie’s also serves stellar lemon Italian ice. The thin-cut beef is moist and perfectly seasoned with hints of oregano. The hot peppers deliver plenty of heat but don’t overwhelm the meat. Don’t sleep on the beef-sausage sandwich. While the city has plenty of beef options, Johnnie’s is worth the drive to the ‘burbs.

Rick Bayless’s Mexican haven in River North, including Xoco on the corner, is a Chicago institution spawning spinoffs around the globe of south of the border fare from street food to high end. At Frontera Grill, his original restaurant, folks flock from around the globe to wait in line (there’s only limited reservations) for casual, festive, groundbreaking regional Mexican fare. At Topolobampo, connected through a side doorway, Bayless’ team serves gorgeous, mind-blowing Michelin-starred tasting menus.

The template for one of the country’s top chefs and restaurant groups (Paul Kahan’s One Off Hospitality), their temple to pork, fish, charcuterie and beer is stronger than ever, as evidenced by spinoffs across the street and at O’Hare International Airport, and a spot on Eater National’s best restaurants in America list. Don’t mistake the boisterous atmosphere with long beer hall-esque communal tables for pedestrian food or no waits, as it remains one of Chicago’s toughest tables, even for the standout brunch.

2016 saw a slew of great restaurant openings but Noah Sandoval’s West Loop stunner perhaps shined the brightest. He, along with his wife Cara, are leading the way for a new generation of fine dining that’s coupling refined, upscale dishes on its tasting menu, from its caviar starter staple to a Japanese A5 wagyu, all in a laid-back experience. Critics and diners alike have been impressed, with the Michelin Guide awarding the restaurant two stars in its first year. A dining room with exposed brick walls and wooden floors and ceilings. Boka Restaurant Group isn’t short on heavy hitters but its majestic modern Japanese restaurant is arguably the crown jewel of the company. Spread across three floors, Momotaro blends traditional Japanese ingredients and flavors with contemporary technique for a breathtaking experience. The menu is divided between sushi and robata bites and includes luxuries such as A5 wagyu steak and pristine fatty tuna. For a more casual meal and drinks, the lower-level izakaya offers similarly remarkable options like chicken karaage, uni spaghetti, and ramen.

Chicagoans have few choices for upscale Indian food downtown. Rooh’s 2019 arrival is noteworthy not only because it fills that void, but it also gives the West Loop one of the most unique restaurants in the city. Patrons will be more than impressed with familiar classics such as butter chicken, but jackfruit kofta, gunpowder scallops, and achari monkfish give diners a sliver of modern Indian cooking. All this inside a comfortable space worthy of Randolph Restaurant Row. Look for fun, spiced cocktails to round out the experience. Reservations are recommended for the spinoff of the San Francisco restaurant that opened in 2017.

The first restaurant from former Top Chef and Spiaggia chef Sarah Grueneberg has quickly cemented itself as one of Chicago’s top Italian destinations and its tough-to-get reservations are a prime example. The pastas are the stars at the West Loop hotspot, such as cannelloni saltimbocca with merguez lamb sausage, manchego cheese, peas, harissa, and balsamico, many of which are made on a small demonstration stage of sorts behind the bar. Albany Cottage's 5 treasures that you won't find at any other homestay Amidst the lush, verdant backdrop of Coonoor, sits Albany Cottage, a stunning home with plenty of colonial charm. Here, you will find magical treasures and luxurious promises that are hard to find anywhere else.
Majestic views of the Nilgiris. Acres and acres of deep foliage everywhere you look.
Albany Cottage
situated in Coonoor, is where you can find a little chunk of paradise. Spread across 780 sq metres, this home will take your breath away. Right from its four tastefully designed bedrooms to its sit-outs that let you enjoy your tea with a view, Albany Cottage is where good times begin. Here are 5 things that you will find at this luxurious nest which you won’t find at any other homestay.
1) Albany Cottage is furnished tastefully, using antique furniture and artefacts from palaces and mansions in India and abroad. So you might just be sitting on a piece of furniture that once belonged to royalty!
2) The floors of Albany Cottage are custom designed. What this means is that nearly every room boasts different kinds of floor tiles! So, while the living room offers stone-look tiles with charming gold stripes, the library will surprise you with its beautiful KP tiles in multiple hues.
3) Albany Cottage offers the best of both worlds by providing you with sweeping views of the Nilgiris, all inside a home steeped in colonial charm. It's actually an ode to a British aristocrat who once summered here!

Avant gard(e)ns Be it an enchanted garden or a smaller, more intimate one,
Isprava
tells you how you can bring your beautiful green spaces to life.
Gardens are wonderful places; sweet smelling flowers, gently swaying plants and an air of stillness. What's not to love? It is as though time stands still when you are spending it in a garden. And that is exactly why it becomes so important to spend some time and work a little towards making your garden space simply flawless. And here are four key landscaping design trends that will elevate any and every kind of garden space.
1) Plant a section for the kitchen An excellent idea is to have a plot specially crafted to grow vegetables and herbs to be used in your food. From fresh basil and parsley to little tomato patches, you can go ahead and plant your favourites.
2) Say yes to water features The tinkling sound of water in a garden is endearing, to say the least. It can also act as a meditative element. So, adding in a water feature to your garden space can truly bring it to life.
3) Include soft lighting Lighting up your garden the right way is an absolute must! You may host a garden party in the late evening, or perhaps, you may have an urge to eat outdoors once the sun sets. Hence, make sure to include soft lighting in your garden. This will not only make it look better but also make moving about in the dark easier.
4) Create a private space Use long plants that grow close together to build a wall or just go on and build an actual one that divides your garden into parts. You can use one section as a private entertainment area, a reading nook or simply a space devoted to exotic flowers and plants.

Snack on this In conversation with Meher and Matt Taff, founders of Natch snacks on the things that make them tick.
1) You moved from NYC to India to start a nutritious snack empire, tell us about this big shift and how you adapted?
Before we moved to India, snacking was an everyday ritual for us, and being in NYC we found ourselves very spoiled for choice. There was always some new health fad that people were obsessing over, sometimes tasty and sometimes not so much. For us, we always gravitated towards snacks that were both simple and delicious. We avoided things that were overly processed. No matter what you were into, there was always an abundance of options to meet your craving.
When we got to India, we were surprised by how few options we found for the type of yummy, guilt free snacks that we love. Most of the things we found were processed or full of chemicals. Both of us, entrepreneurs at heart, knew we wanted to start a company together, and healthy snacks felt like the perfect fit. From there, we laid out our criteria of what an ideal snack should be and began our search.
We wanted our products to be natural, minimally processed, vegan, gluten free, lactose free and 100% delicious. We also wanted to be true to our audience, so we tried to incorporate fun twists on traditional favourites like our chilli flavoured coconut chips or dried mango slices. We launched Natch to bring snacks that we personally love to munch on, keeping in mind the Indian palette and love of fresh, bold flavours.
2) Has travel ever inspired any of your nutritious snack offerings? If so, how?
The love for travel is shared by us both and has been a huge influence on us as well as for Natch. In fact, a lot of the products Natch offers were inspired by our travels, particularly to parts of America and Asia. A majority of our products come from Thailand, which is where a lot of the inspiration for Natch was firstborn. Very early in the process, Meher and I visited a snack exhibition in Bangkok and were blown away by the incredible variety and selection of snacks. It was on this trip that we first began to explore the type of products that we believed would be a great fit for India, while still maintaining our commitment to being good, and good for you.
Beyond just the products themselves, Natch aims to create a laid back, travel-friendly culture. All of our products are natural, with real, simple ingredients, offered in bright and accessible packaging. We know that people's lifestyles are evolving, so we have created snacks that can be enjoyed on-the-go. Everything is bite sized and packed fresh, perfect for road trips, hammocks, or waiting for the train. We love to explore new places and believe Natch is the perfect travel companion for any adventure.
3) What would we find in your Isprava kitchen? What is your prime indulgence?
In our Isprava kitchen, you would probably find lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, yummy snacks, and lots of things that go well with a cold beer or a cocktail. We are both snackaholics, and would each rather have 9 small meals in a day than 2-3 big ones. We love all types of appetizers, dips, and tapas type snacks, things you can munch on all day for a quick bite.
Neither one of us has much of a sweet tooth, so our prime indulgence is usually more of the savoury variety. Matt loves sharp cheeses, salted snacks, and prosciutto pizza, while Meher is a sucker for pate, a good cheesesteak, or just about anything doused in butter. While its true neither of us love sweets, we have yet to meet a piece of fried dough we do not like.
4) If you could carry only five things on your next escape, what would they be?
Firstly, our Natch snacks, of course ;). Not only do they serve as great munchies on a trip but also provide us with good images for our social media marketing. We would each have to bring a bathing suit because we love the warm sunshine so have most likely picked a place that is beachside. To accompany that would have to be our favourite pair of flip flops and sunglasses. Sadly, I must admit we would probably want to bring along our iPhone, allegedly for navigation and communication, but really just to browse the internet and look at Instagram. Our phone would also be key; helps in snapping a lot of great photos.
5) In a world where even snacks get categorised as luxe or premium, what does luxury mean to you?
We would categorise Natch as a premium snack company. We use only the finest natural ingredients in all of our carefully crafted products, resulting in an exceptional snack that is unparalleled in taste and quality. In this regard, premium is the perfect way to describe what we are going for.
"Luxury" on the other hand can be misleading. It denotes something you treat yourself to on a special occasion, and at a big expense. Natch products, however, are meant to be enjoyed all the time! Our natural, better-for-you products should not be considered as an occasional indulgence, but rather an everyday snack that you can eat guilt free.

Try as hard as you can to not fall off the Mountain or throw up your Granger, and please do not do both at the same time. You seriously thought it was right there. S***. It was like RIGHT THERE, you SWEAR. Is that it? No? Do they have a cup of coffee for you? Hey, might as well try. 10:30 a.m. First annual alumni softball game for all softball alumni and their families. Softball field. Come hike Sewanee’s newest trail and get a glimpse of the University’s recently-acquired property. To meet for the hike, follow signs to the trail beginning behind the Sewanee Market. Edit this copy on your phone as you join the youngest class of all and explain to them why it was all better before. 1:30 p.m. Homecoming football game vs. Centre College at Hardee McGee Field. :/ 1:30 p.m. The concession stand at the football field is run by Housing Sewanee Inc.—Sewanee’s version of Habitat for Humanity. Proceeds go directly to purchase building materials for client homes. Please stop by during Homecoming and buy a delicious hotdog and Coke. Just stop by and give some money. You don't have to watch the game. You DON'T HAVE TO WATCH THE GAME. 1:30 p.m. YSR Club hospitality tent Stop by the YSR Club tent during the football game and learn about the exciting news about athletics at Sewanee. The women's swimming and tennis are probably unstoppable still so the most exciting thing you can do is go donate to housing 1:30 p.m. Carillon tour in historic Shapard Tower. Get a bird’s eye view of the Sewanee campus with this informative tour. Fall out of the upper window again, peeing yourself on the way down. 2:00 p.m. Amanda and Sam run you to University Hospital for your IPOST-related injuries. 3:00-4:30 p.m. Free time! If you're up past then, you need to just go home. 9 p.m. Coffee Café at Stirling’s Coffee House on Georgia Avenue. Enjoy premium coffee and late night treats. Because nothing says "I need to get up early to work a job and I'm 40+" like coffee at 9 pm. Sunday, Nov. 5 8 a.m. Holy Eucharist at All Saints’ Chapel. We're cool if you just walk in and drop to your knees and yell "OH GOD" at this point. We will still consider that a prayer and welcome you into the Episcopal Church. 8–noon McGriff Alumni House will be open for your convenience. Possibly inconvenience. We don't know yet. Just go to the Lemon House or something. 9:30 a.m. Memorial service for alumni, faculty, staff, and community members in St. Augustine’s Chapel (within All Saints’ Chapel). :'( 11 a.m. Holy Eucharist at All Saints’ Chapel. Catholics and Jews are gonna go ahead and sleep through this anyway. 6:30 p.m. Growing in Grace (informal eucharist) All Saints’ Chapel. Or, for some of you, going the hell home gracefully. You're too old for this. 8:00 p.m. Memorial for Student Volunteers of McGriff "The Crime Dog" Alumni House

Not Yet Dead Poets Society
Every Friday, at 4pm on the dot (or maybe a little sooner), someone will shout across the office: “I call POETS!”. Cheers will ring out all around, and, more often than not, it will be Hannu, the Flying Fin, who is the first to make it official by cracking open a beer.
Tumblr media
Poets is a long-standing work tradition, not just at the Shutta office, but everywhere around the English-speaking countries. It stands for – and do please pardon my French – “Piss Off Early, Tomorrow’s Saturday”, because there is simply no better way to celebrate that the weekend has finally arrived than by starting those blissful two days off a couple of hours early. Strictly speaking, Poets means that anyone is free to go home early, but in practice, at Shutta, it means that the beers come out and the BBQ gets going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shutta has honoured the tradition of Poets from the day we opened our first office, even before the first employees joined, when it was just James and me. In those days (and for many of us this is still true today), weekends were an alien concept. Saturdays and Sundays were as much taken up with work as any other day of the week, but even then, it felt good to celebrate with friends, just for a few hours. Poets pretty much was our entire weekend, condensed into 5 hours.
Tumblr media
You could even say that the tradition started when we were office hunting. For both of us, it was important that the Shutta office be an inside-outside experience. We’re fortunate enough to be based in a stunningly beautiful country, abound with lush greenery, even in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. No boxed-in startup office with cool graffiti of trees and nature for us, we wanted the real deal: a garden to have meetings in, a garden to take a breather in, and of course, a garden to have office parties and BBQs in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poets is our form of “nominication”: the ancient Japanese tradition with a modern name of communicating over drinks after work. The invitation to share some food and drinks is extended well beyond the core Shutta team. As the group of people stopping by on a Friday afternoon grew, it quickly earned the nickname Not Yet Dead Poets Society, and a Facebook group to manage “official” communications was formed. Amongst the members you will find Shutta users, journalists, clients, investors, suppliers, and friends of the same. The only rule is that only an existing member can invite a new Poet to join into the fun.
Tumblr media
Some Poets are small and intimate, with less than 10 of us, sharing a few beers and crisps. Others are vibrant and busy, with maybe 50 people showing up throughout the afternoon and into the evening. We suspect it is when word gets out that Hannu has made his famous cream cheese and spring-onion dip or when photos of Sylke’s criminally indulgent cheesy bread are leaked, that the Poets come running to join in. The impromptu fire-extinguisher battle that broke out between Jonny and Freddy equally drew a crowd (please don’t try this out, it’s bound to get you into trouble!).
Tumblr media
But the objective of Poets is not to be the best Friday afternoon party venue in town nor is it a networking event, although more than one deal or collaboration has started out with two likeminded people meeting at a Friday Poets for the first time. Poets is simply an opportunity for anyone related to Shutta to come together and chill. No formalities, no service, no airs and graces. An old wheelbarrow as a BBQ, a Coke fridge stocked up with cold ones, and a ready-made excuse to start the weekend early, in the company of friends. That’s what Poets is to us, and you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s happening this Friday.
Barbara Ximenez,
Shutta co-founder.

All Aboard the Nano-Trolley, the New Tørst Menu, and more
Tumblr media
Chris Cuzme and Kelly Taylor host a January trolley tour of Bronx breweries (Photo: Juren David)
The Trolley Returns
Last year, NYC beer vets Kelly Taylor of KelSo and Chris Cuzme of the forthcoming Fifth Hammer Brewing Co. started hosting trolley tours of several breweries in Brooklyn and Queens to raise money for City Harvest. They’re back again for their fourth tour -- this time, to the city’s nano-breweries on Wednesday night, April 19th. The $40 trolley tour will start in Queens at Transmitter Brewing, then head to Big Alice Brewing, across Newtown Creek to Keg & Lantern Brewing Company, and wrap up down in Industry City at newcomers Lineup Brewing and Wartega Brewing. You’ll get transportation and tours and tastings at each brewery. Get on the trolley and get your tickets now!
Tørst’s Tasty Morsels
Some folks were heartbroken when chef Daniel Burns stepped away from Luksus, the backroom tasting menu restaurant at Tørst. But the kitchen -- led by a former member of Burns’ team -- is still running, and rolled out a new menu recently. We had a chance to try a few items this week, and we were impressed. The burger was cooked perfectly, and served with a tangy Polish mustard (a nod to the Greenpoint neighborhood). The French Montana, a play on a French dip with short rib and a snappy horseradish, was tasty, too. The Crispy Chicken Skin was the surprise hit of the night, a crunch morsel served with hot sauce and bleu cheese. Take a gander at the menu and consider it next time you’re sipping on their beer.
Tumblr media
Perrin Brewing Launches in New York
Michigan’s Perrin Brewing is the next brewery to cross the Hudson into the city. They’ll launch in April with events around the city next week (they’re all in our calendar). The brewery was acquired by Oskar Blues in 2015 and has experienced significant growth from the company’s investment, thanks in part to its availability in cans. Among its most buzzed-about beers: No Rules, a 15% ABV Vietnamese Imperial Stout, and 98 Problems, a West Coast-style IPA. Look for more of their beer to hit shelves in the city by mid to late April. They’ll be distributed locally by Union Beer Distributors.
Founders KBS Makes Annual Return
Founders Brewing’s Kentucky Breakfast Stout has come a long way from being chased around the city by beer nerds just a few years ago. These days, it’s a lot easier to find, but the Imperial Stout with coffee and chocolate aged on Kentucky Bourbon Barrels packs no less of a flavor punch. The beer makes its annual debut on April 1st this year, with a whole lineup of events all across the city, including a three-year KBS vertical on Saturday afternoon at Rattle-N-Hum East. You’ll find all the events in our calendar, and even if you’re out of town this week and next, you’ll still get chances to drink the beer well into April. What a time to be alive.
Your Weekly Can Release Roundup
Here’s some of the new releases at the city’s breweries this weekend:
Four-packs of cans of Flagship Brewery’s crisp, refreshing Metropolitan Lager are available for purchase at their taproom on Staten Island starting today, just in time for that warm weather. You’ll also find them at Citi Field when the Mets open their season late next week.
Kings County Brewers Collective debuts cans of their Robot Fish IPA with Halcyon malt and Citra hops this Saturday. But there’s no need to stand on line -- you can pre-order the beer online for $16/4-pack and then pick up at the brewery starting at noon Saturday.
Speaking of ordering online, Threes Brewing has a fresh batch of Chronic Myopia IPA canned and ready for your ordering pleasure. Buy online, then pick up at the brewery store starting tomorrow at noon.
Does Other Half have a can release this weekend? Of course they do! This week, it’s a double dry-hopped version of their Hop Showers IPA ($18/4-pk), the Mission Dolores anniversary beer Subterranean Rotation IPA ($16/4-pk), and a double dry-hopped version of Southernhopalistic IPA ($18/4-pk). Sales start per usual at 10am.
And Finally
Had the pleasure of meeting Paul Jones of Manchester, England’s Cloudwater Brew Co. this week while he’s on an East Coast swing. Cloudwater has been putting out IPAs across the pond that might impress even the most vehement American IPA Exceptionalist or (Insatiable Animal). The two-year old outfit took home a boatload of nods at this year’s RateBeer awards, including being ranked the fifth best brewery in the world. Look for some of their beers to hit our shores in April... along with a collaboration with a certain local brewer of IPAs.

Seven Yummy Road Meals Decisions in London
so many choices, so many places, so many decisions. And attempting to sift your method by way of the large gastronomic foodie decisions in one of many largest cities on this planet, unaided and alone, can show to be slightly irritating, food-wise.  So some priorities: glorious Soho avenue meals, some Aussie ex-pat excellence, or a superb grilled cheese on the Borough Market, and extra. Drooling but? Listed below are Seven Foodie Decisions in London that we actually ‘stumbled’ upon throughout our current go to to town. Eat up and luxuriate in!
Some Soho Road Meals?
Simply up the street from the theatre district and Picadilly on Soho’s Rupert Road sits the Road Meals Union, a conglomerate of pop-up stalls that may make any wandering foodie hungry.  Serving the stylish advertising, promoting and start-up lads and girls of Soho, and the occasional misplaced theatre vacationer heading to a matinee efficiency of Les Miz, the Road Meals Union gives an enormous number of scrummy lunchtime takeaways.
Dev Masrani serves me up a mighty imply Hen Tikka field with candy pepper curry, sizzling peppers and a toasty heat chapati from his oh so scrumptious smelling Lili Chutney (@lilichutney ) stall. ‘It’s all concerning the coriander chutney’ says Dev. Therefore, the scrummy identify of Dev’s tasty pop up: ‘a mixture of garlic, ginger, mango, and inexperienced chilies or “Lili Chutney” and finest eaten recent’. No downside right here, Dev!
I hold with Nick, who’s ‘in love with the ol’ deep south and southern soul meals’ and the opposite Pulled Pork Lads at Slingin’ Po Boys (@slinginpoboys) (try their rebrand to Bayou Bar!) and savour a freshly pulled pork sammy, piled excessive with 12+ hour simmered pork, secret seasoning (I used to be sworn to maintain!) and particular sauce. I lingered over their huge cauldron of simmering pork for a great hour!
Two stalls down I catch a waft of aromatic paella on the boil at The Spanish Lab (), the saffron, garlic, paprika and smoky cayenne steaming up Rupert Road and engaging me down to look at the group paddle-stir their monumental pot of yellow-orange delish. This pop-up group of Spanish cooks is renewing the Spanish meals scene instantly on the streets of Britain, and there may be at all times a line up on the Rupert Road location.
Every thing Italian Since 1944
Whereas in Soho and across the nook on Rupert Road, I popped my head into Lina Shops, the attractive Italian Deli and meals store that has been offering all the pieces Italian since 1944. The shop is ‘pieno di tutto’ from pasta to porcini and truffles, beans, biscuits and truffles to olives and antipasti, tomato merchandise, an enormous collection of vinegar and Italian coffees. Seize a prosciutto di parma, tomato, mozzarella and Basil Italian sandwich to go for lunch or maybe some crespelle ai funghi or a pea, mint, and pecorino frittata in your dinner.
An Australian Import
And talking of dinner: simply try to get into one in all Granger and Co’s three places in both Notting Hill, Clerkenwell or King’s Cross. The Australian import serves a mighty tremendous breakfast and brunch and having simply missed an extended, Friday evening line-up, (no reservations, sorry) a stellar dinner as nicely. Invoice Granger opened his first restaurant in Sydney’s Darlinghurst neighbourhood (a tripstations favorite) within the early ’90s, shortly changing into famend for his legendary ‘sunny, easy-going and beneficiant’ breakfasts and shortly expanded globally to Seoul, Tokyo, Honolulu and the three places in London. We shared plates of courgette chips dipped in nigella seeds and served with sides of tahini yogurt earlier than transferring onto heaping plates of yellow fish curry, spiced butternut squash, roast peanuts, jasmine rice, and a cucumber relish and beef shin ragu, gremolata, radicchio, cavatelli and parmesan ‘bowl’. Service is fast, enjoyable and at all times laughing from Ex-Pat Aussies (this seems to be a pre-requisite with their hiring practices) touchdown in London to make their fortunes and lives.  On our go to, we have been seated beside one other Aussie ex-pat, an particularly well-known actor Wolverine/Jean Val Jean actor who noshed and drank on a Friday evening similar to the remainder of us. Make an effort to affix the line-ups and savour their breakfast or Sunday brunch.
Grilled Cheese Heaven on the Borough Market
We have been craving slightly lunchtime grilled cheese sammy (or because the Brits name them: ‘Cheese Toasties’) someday and based mostly on Go to London’s reco, wandered over to the Borough Market and paid a go to to Kappacasein Cheese Melting Stall (Canadians will get the geographic reference) and thought we landed in Grill Cheese heaven. The Greatest grilled cheese in London? We predict so.
The Authentic Gastropub: Meals in Farringdon
Reportedly the originator of the gastropub expertise in London, The Eagle Farringdon () is actually a pub expertise with a twist: beer shouldn’t be the main target right here;  slightly a tiny kitchen that extends into the room and resides entrance and heart of the bar space pushing out fascinating and eclectic meals. Pubbers are requested to put their orders from the daily-changing chalkboard menu on the bar, seize their drinks from a menu that features virtually all the pieces from beer, rum and wine. We collect at communal, mismatched tables with equally mismatched plates and cutlery and your meals arrives when it is able to be ‘ate’: no pretense, no fancy airs. We noshed on plates of huge hunks of gorgonzola and ripe pears and heaping dishes of Napoli sausage, lentils and salsa verde all washed down with pints of Hackney Brewery’s pale ale. Our desk mates learn the Saturday papers, have interaction in public desk speak and nibble, sip and nosh their method by way of all the pieces a great, late pub lunch ought to be.
If in any respect doable, try to join up with a neighborhood who can present you the foodie ropes or take you on their very own favourites foodie tour in London: in spite of everything, pals solely suggest one of the best to different pals!
#Eatwell in London, my pals!

There’s no denying the body weight reduction final results quite a few people experience in a tremendous-limited room of time – and which is mainly because keto is incredibly low in sugar.
Zana Morris, founder of The Library fitness center, earlier informed Metro.co.uk that ‘any extra fat all over your center is entirely insulin-related’.
In other text, if you have a tummy extra fat that you aren’t at ease with, it could be down to your usage or inability to procedure sugars. And as all carbs are sugar, that could suggest likely low-carb.
So what takes place if you are a vegan who’s on the lookout to cut down any sugar-similar body extra fat or who only would like to preserve their body weight making use of keto?
Plant-based mostly keto is doable
The dilemma with most normal ideas is that they misunderstand what the ketogenic diet plan actually requires. Whilst you are acquiring a large intestine complete of protein (a good deal of which your body can not metabolise), you miss out on vital antioxidants and fibre from fruit and veggies.
According to experts from Tufts College, an outstanding a person in twelve deaths entire world large is triggered by not having sufficient veg, and a person in 7 are triggered by a deficiency of fruit.
Significantly from remaining a zero-carb approach, you are supposed to get all of your carb wants from eco-friendly veggies. If you ate a couple of portions of broccoli, spinach, kale, sprouts and many others at every single food, not only would you not miss your grains or processed carbs, but you’d also be chock-complete of iron, vitamin K, A, C, folate and fibre.
And when you look at that half of your plate really should be designed up of people eco-friendly veggies, it’s really quick to see how you could go vegan keto.
Ditch your meat or fish for grilled tofu or tempeh. Give a quarter of your plate more than to avocado, hummus and nuts. Make salad dressings from lashings of olive oil and lemon juice.
In other text, a vegan keto diet plan is additional like a low-carb Mediterranean fashion of having – complete of heart healthy fats, proteins and fibre.
A single individual who is sold on its positive aspects is Liz – MeatFreeKeto on Instagram – a vegan keto blogger who shares her low-carb plant-based mostly recipes and strategies with additional than twelve,000 followers.
She turned keto for its anti-inflammatory houses. By ditching sugar and gluten, she found that her digestive method worked additional successfully and that her hormone levels evened out.
The positive aspects of a keto diet plan
General the keto diet plan approach is good. When you eat significant in carbs, your body will develop glucose and insulin. Glucose is the simplest molecule for your body to convert and use as electrical power which implies the fats you eat, your body stores.
But when you go into ketosis, your body burns stored extra fat for electrical power alternatively of glucose and the positive aspects include:
Rebalancing the body
Cutting down blood strain
Resetting your insulin levels
Bettering cognitive procedures and psychological balance
The final reward is that you completely modify your having behaviors to include additional extra fat and eat much healthier as you adapt to this diet plan.

Proscribing an by now limited diet plan may be risky
The challenge, on the other hand, is the truth that any restrictive diet plan can require missing out on vital vitamins.
If you swerve colourful fruit and veg mainly because you are obsessing more than sugar written content, you finish up missing out on vital natural vitamins and antioxidants that we know are absolutely important for maintaining great well being.
Plant-based mostly meals have a tendency to be considerably additional immediately digested than animal based mostly types, so if you are reducing out grains, root veg, dates and fruit, you could discover oneself acquiring actually hungry actually immediately.
And then, of system, you’ve bought the truth that as vegans, we reduce so considerably out of our diet plan by now that any further more restriction could bring about challenges with how we perspective nourishment and having behaviors.
For real ketosis to be triggered (which is the procedure by which your body begins to use its possess body extra fat for electrical power), you’ve bought to be having a quite low quantity of carbs every single day. We’re on the lookout at all over five-10% of your day-to-day calorie consumption, which for the regular woman is likely to be about 20kcals. So which is about a bowl of courgetti.
Conventional keto macronutrients are break up into about 70 per cent extra fat, 20 per cent protein and 10 per cent carbs.
Again, imagine about that from a vegan perspective. You don’t have the aid of oily fish or nutrient-dense fatty cheeses. You have bought avocado, nuts (quite possibly nut cheeses), coconut merchandise and yoghurt to get most of your day-to-day energy from. Compared with heaps of animal merchandise, heaps of plant-based mostly proteins aren’t also abundant in extra fat – they are actually low in the things. So vegan keto calls for you to meticulously approach every area of your plate and to monitor almost everything.
If you can do that and you want to do that, interesting.
Keto can aid with metabolic conditions
We know that keto can aid with specified conditions like form 2 diabetic issues and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Both of those of people are influenced by insulin resistance.
70-eighty% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance. Large levels of insulin improve testosterone which bring about the facial hair growth, zits, hair reduction, and missing durations – so just about anything that can aid to provide down that insulin is value on the lookout into.
A single analyze found that a keto diet plan aided to reverse Style 2 diabetic issues in 10 months and people results were taken care of for up to a year with an regular body weight reduction of more than 2st.
Claire Goodwin, AKA the PCOS Nutritionist earlier informed us that the most straightforward dietary advice she’d give to all women with PCOS is to ‘just eat true food’.
‘And by true food items, I suggest just about anything that you can eat immediately from mother nature, like veggies, fruit, fish, nuts, oils, seafood and ethically elevated, grass fed meat and oils.
‘Secondly, clear away sugar and sweeteners.  70-eighty% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance (pre-Style 2 Diabetes), so sugar (and that features all-natural sweeteners like dates and maple syrup) is only likely to be exacerbating this.’
Whilst she’s not vegan herself, it’s clear that she’s an advocate for quite straightforward, no-fuss having that focuses on complete meals.
More: Well being
But not all keto is fairly what is seems
That does not suggest binning fruit and rice, it implies having almost everything in moderation and filling up on unprocessed grub. If it’s been milled, refined, sweetened, give it a miss.
‘Keto is played up in the media as being the issue that aided people to lose their body weight,’ Claire and James Davis, also acknowledged as the Midlife Mentors, say.
‘It’s a way of life, not a diet plan – you can’t dip in and out of ketosis so you have to kiss goodbye to having out or remaining social all over food items. It is not sustainable for most people.
‘The Lancet did a large analyze on it (more than 15,000 people) and there are all these advocates of keto dismissing their results!
‘There’s heaps of dishonesty all over it much too. You see influences these times declaring to be vegan, posing with beers likely “oh, I’m nonetheless taking pleasure in beers on keto!”. No, you are not.’
Eating healthily does not have to be complicated
Just recall that having nicely does not have to be this complicated.
You can get identical final results from having a properly complete food items, vegan diet plan – balancing hormones by ditching refined meals and doing work out often to encourage your metabolism.
