#so there's this person on twitter who is like an infamous drama starter and got a whole forum shut down once#and they wrote this (different) book that's one of the greatest so bad it's good things i've ever read#a few great things that happen in that:#characters get in a car crash and flee on foot. later it's casually mentioned one character had both her legs amputated 'due to fractures'#the character pretending to be american by wearing maga hats that have spy gear built into them#the spy gear in question is an alarm that blares if someone lies in their vicinity#'stuff protocol ' said the queen. 'i'm getting hammered tonight'#the chapter where the prime minister is trying to watch the news so she keeps wandering into bars and tv shops and getting kicked out#the dragon that's casually described as 'about the size of 1000 elephants'#the dragon that's a 'dog dragon hybrid with a chihuahua body and a giant dragon head'#the dragon that's owner punched it in the face and only lets people approach if they 'do the iconic royal wave'#the characters being described as 'the short one' 'the guy with the beard' etc#but there being a lengthy detailed description of the characters in harry potter#'apparently a dragon had burnt essex to cinders in a matter of minutes'#anyways i found out they also wrote (a political parody of indiana jones???) for this book of kids short stories years ago#and you know. we needed to know#so it took me like 4 months to track this precious lost media down#which was very worth it because it turns out it's full of many other iconic gems like CELLAR HELL by Elizabeth Elgie (12)

I tried to remember the usual fit of my soul in my body, the priority of things, my way of looking at the world. What to do with my limbs in the stillness.

Bismuth poofed Lapis, but Homeworld interrogators thought she was a Crystal Gem. Maybe Pink Diamond picked her up?
yeah, and that would make it even more messed up considering pink diamond, as rose, would know who is a crystal gem or not. as a diamond, she knows which gems are combatants or not.
you could argue it was what she had to do in a war: lapis was eventually going to join the terraforming efforts and destroy even more life. so pink instead chose to use the excuse of her being a crystal gem to trap her and be used as a tool. she once again ignores a gemā€™s autonomy, but this time she has years of leading the rebellion as experience. she does this anyways.

Hi wilt do you have theories as to why so many MM books are shitty? Are my standards too high? Like so many popular MM books are popular based off the sexiness of the characters and the sex alone and so many are just the most basic "I'm serious/edgy guy" and "I'm flirty/funny guy" relationship.
I have to fight for my life to find a good MM book that isn't instant attraction/love (I fucking hate when an MCs first thoughts about the other MC is "I want to fuck him so bad"; it's only good in a few stories), and has a worthwhile plot, well developed characters with serious/realistic problems, and a meaningful romance. I know there's really good MM out there but it's so annoying going thru Goodreads and finding maybe one actually well-thought, not porn-y book out of 13 hockey romances about the same generic, muscley white ppl.
so, i dont read popular books. full stop. i also generally avoid anything marked as strictly 'romance' or published in the past 8+ years out of personal preference (if i can help it). because from my experience what youre describing is an ongoing problem with modern publishing standards and i have zero patience or interest for it.
my advice would be to try reading stuff published before 2015, roughly, and avoid goodreads like the plague. easier said than done because ive been trawling through older and weirder gay books for about a decade now, and they have certainly not all been Good. but generally the good stuff (complex characters, weird narrative styles, compelling and morally difficult stories) isnt what's "marketable", and youre gonna have to work harder to find it. stuff thats out of print, self published indie authors, old abandonned review blog sites - it takes work. but your standards arent too high.
i think publishers these days are too interested in making a quick buck off queer readers (with sanitized YA and smutty plotless shovelware novels) rather than take risks with more challenging, thoughtful, adult gay fiction. older books (from smaller and even shortlived publishers) seem to have been a lot more willing to take those risks because publishing stories with gay characters was already a risk in and of itself. and if they were going to print a book with gay characters the story have better been damn good and worth the investment.
in conclusion capitalism is the death of art, use storygraph instead of goodreads, and take chances on books that maybe dont have many reviews but are just strange enough to pique your interest. good luck and godspeed out there soldier

yk when I read that one tumblr post saying you can spot the difference between someone who was raised on Wattpad and AO3, I used to think about it in confusion. I now understand though. I now understand :|

The funny thing about my love-hate relationship with Barber is that conceptually, I do understand and agree with the concepts he established/strengthened about IDW Optimus, and I do think that if you want to write a good IDW Optimus you should read some of his stuff and ponder the themes that are trying to be conveyed therein.
It's just that holy shit the actual stories that IDW OP is in, like the plotlines and the reasons things happens and the style they're written in. Dark and depressing but not in a fun way, more focused on plot than character development, fast-paced and has a lot of things happen without much breathing or contemplation room, incredibly horrible plot holes and forcing certain things to happen for the sake of the plot. Like good god in THEORY his stories contain everything I wanted out of phase 2, it's just that the way it was EXECUTED fills me with so much disappointment and anger.

I love when Amazon plays itself. Itā€™s genuinely so funny
#so i have this new yearā€™s resolution for 2023 that iā€™m not buying new books unless iā€™ve read something from the author before & loved it#and even then iā€™m going to check the library + any book swaps in my town just to see if i can obtain a copy more sustainably#but thereā€™s a caveat to this. i live in a small town so if i walk into my library thereā€™s a pretty slim chance iā€™m going to find#the exact book i want. ditto book swaps. tbh the book swaps are a total potluck. sometimes there are gems; sometimes itā€™s just gardening#and animal husbandry and outdated maps. which is fine if you like that sort of thing but itā€™s probably not what iā€™m after#so what i generally do is i place a reservation for a book at the library. i live in the largest (by area anyway) county in england#so thereā€™s a decent chance iā€™m getting my book eventually. this is good! the only thing is that thereā€™s a Ā£1 charge for requesting a book#i donā€™t begrudge this because you can sort of pay it whenever. your account wonā€™t lock you out of borrowing unless you have#something like Ā£20 in fines. i always thought it was Ā£10 but then my friend managed to borrow several books for her kiddo despite owing Ā£18#so i think it must be Ā£20+. anyway. so requests cost Ā£1#so i have an exception on my resolution. if the book costs equal to or less than Ā£1; i can buy it instead of getting it from the library#this is where amazon comes in. they were offering the first witcher book for Ā£0.99 a few days ago#i already had a reservation though so i dithered for a day or so and then was like ā€˜i would kind of like to own it just so i can read it at#my own pace & not be pretty much forced to read it as soon as the library gives it to meā€™#so i went back to amazon and how much is it now? Ā£4.99#congrats jeff you played yourself. you couldā€™ve had 99p but instead iā€™m paying the library#tbh i might just make it a rule to pay the library anyway? iā€™d rather give the library my money than jeff#i just found it funny how they unknowingly lost out on a sale like that. evil corporation gets defeated by small town library#personal
