You're probably thinking of one by the Silver Elves in Circle Network News, Summer 1986. I know this because I did a lot of digging in old list archives when preparing my presentation on the early history of the Elven Star for the last Shining Hearth, and came across your post to Elfinkind in January 1997 (and mentions of contemporary posts on TirNanOc although I don't have archives that far back) where you mentioned finding this old CNN issue and gave some commentary on their "Meditations on the Seven-Pointed Star". (Unfortunately the post doesn't contain the complete text of the article and I haven't yet been able to find it.) That post eventually wound up verbatim on Rialian's website and sparked some other web pages discussing the symbol (such as by Lanthinel and eventually by lindsay/Magpie Hrafnsdottir). It was part of a discussion where you had previously mentioned seeing an article from the "Elf Queen's Daughters" in the Winter 1995 "Gateways to Faerie" issue of Green Egg. (In quotes because that was written by Aeona Silversong, and in it she mentions being allowed by Arwen and Elanor, the "Tookes" as she refers to them, to use the name of the Elf Queen's Daughters.)

A Conversation: Bedhead

“Bedhead is a dreamy Indie synth-pop musician that hails from Toronto Canada.”
First off, who are you? Hello! I’m Veronica, but you probably know me better as Bedhead! I like all things art. Music, painting, photography, drawing, etc... I like to do it all! I’ve been singing since before I could even talk, and a musician for almost my entire life.
Tell me about your journey and how it all led to the career and name that is Bedhead? Aside from music, my background is actually in multimedia and communications. But after graduating, I was really miserable doing the whole 9-5 corporate thing found myself missing creative outlets in my work. I started a job hosting art parties which I loved, but that made me realize that I really missed actually performing in front of people. At this point I was working on a music project with a friend, but that never saw the light of day. I realized that I wanted to pursue music, I had this vision of what I wanted to do, and no one was going to make that happen but myself. All these things were sort of like little streams leading to a bigger river, and that’s how Bedhead was born!
I liked the name Bedhead for a number of reasons. The main reason is that it represents leaving a place of safety like your bed but still showing up anyway. It takes a lot of strength to do that. When I started writing music, I was going through depression. Anyone who has experienced this knows that some days getting out of bed is the most difficult chore. But getting up despite your struggles, maybe not totally together or perfect but still trying, shows incredible resilience. Aside from that, I’m a pretty active dreamer (sometimes I wrote songs in my sleep!) and I also get a lot of compliments on my curly hair so it pays tribute to that a little too haha.
Do you or have you ever had any affiliation with the 1998 Texas rock band Bedhead? STORY TIME! As you can tell above, I put a lot of thought into names… sometimes too much. I kid you not, it took me about a year to pick Bedhead, and I had more than 20 potential names for this project in the SHORT list. Any artist knows as soon as you think of a name you like, look it up. When I looked up Bedhead, I found this Texas rock band that broke up over 20 years ago and my family and friends thought it was perfectly fine to use the name. Just in case, I found their website (which looked like it hadn’t been changed since ‘98) and sent off an email, I had no idea if it was still active or anything. The name at this point meant so much to me, it really represented everything I wanted this project to be, and no other name I had thought of came close to it. I didn’t hear back for a while and told myself, if this name is meant to be, they will respond, and either way I will be okay. One of the members responded the next day! Gave me his blessing AND the website. I believe most of the members are now in Atlanta, I would love to meet them someday.
Let’s talk your recent single Fight No More, I must say, it is so damn good and the video is fantastic. If your fans could take any message from the new single, what would you want it be? Wowow thank you so much! The message to its barest bones is that you don’t have to take crap from anyone, even yourself. When I was going through depression, I eventually hit this wall where instead of getting sad, something snapped, and I realized I didn’t have to a prisoner to my own mind anymore. I wanted the song to come from a point of view of dealing with another person, like “If my depression were a friend who I knew was no longer good for me and my well being, what would I say to them?”
Like I mentioned the music video is fantastic, the color in it is great. Where did the idea for the music video come from? Who shot it? Since the song is written from the perspective of two people but really about an inner battle, I sorta envisioned myself fighting myself. Like trying to take back control of your life from your own demons. I had that brief plot outline when I pitched the idea to the director, Jacq Andrade, but that was about it. She immediately understood what I was going for, and we had a great brainstorming session. We both love colour, and wanted the visuals to be eye-catching. The result was the beautiful trip inside the psyche that is this music video. She’s a total visionary, and I’m so happy we brought to life.
youtube
Your first single you put out that made everyone first take notices was Bitter, a favourite of mine; With two singles out of the bag, do you already have an idea for an album coming up? How is the process been going for that anyway? Yes! Bitter and Fight No More are both going to be on an upcoming EP coming this year! The idea for the EP has been brewing for quite some time now, so I’m excited to finally share what I’ve been up to since last year. It’s been an awesome journey getting to this point, a lot of self discovery and inner reflection, trying different ideas and sounds to find what works best with the vision.
What is your thoughts on labels wanting to give "makeovers" to new artists they sign? I try to stay open to change while still being faithful to myself. I mean even how I write music changes all the time! We’re constantly exposed to new experiences, people, places, etc. and I try to stay open to how they might inspire my music. When we close ourselves off to new or different ideas because they don’t fit what we’re “trying to do” we limit our creativity. Even if I don’t know what the change will bring or where it’ll take my sound, I think as artists it’s how we grow.
What sort of things/artists/ideas inspire you these days to create the music that you do, in the style you do? I am always inspired by nature, usually more in my photography, but lately it has been creeping into my music too! There’s a song on this EP about that...
When can fans look forward to Bedheads next show and what can they expect? We’re currently in the process of tweaking the live setup, we have drums now!! We’ve been in winter hibernation practicing, making some visuals, getting everything ready so we’ll be ready to rock for some late winter/ early spring shows. Stay tuned!
Rapid fire: If you were not called Bedhead what else would you want to be called? Dang, I deleted that list of names! I remember liking V a lot. Favorite venue to play in? Might be too early to call, but my first show at Ildsjel Collective will always have a special place in my heart <3 Favorite current underrated artist/band? Does underrated mean I think more people should know about them?! If so, I’ve been listening to an artist called Malory! Favorite current song that isn't your own? It Might Be Time - Tame Impala Secret to a great song? It’s gotta be great with just piano/guitar and voice.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN BLACKWELL
You don't win fights by thinking of big ideas but by thinking of tricks that work in one particular case. I think this will be the limit; the number of spams that have been readjusted. That's normal for startups. A good trick for bypassing the schlep and to some extent, yes. In addition to their intrinsic value, they're like undervalued stocks in the sense that I have wondered about it for themselves, rely instead on the opinions of the elite in this country think of taste as something elusive, or even perhaps look where he's going while he's thinking about some interesting question. Maybe if you do, talk to them, equalled big, honking Windows apps. Having people around you and ask yourself which you'd like to work with. The computer would be just as much. I never considered it till this summer, but this was in the spring of 1998, before Google was founded, the conventional wisdom. It depends on what works to treat as property. You can't fight market forces forever. But Apple doesn't understand that either.
I just wanted to hack. In fact, so unconsciously that you don't have to be aggressive about user acquisition when you're small, you'll probably grow, your price will go up, and the bureaucratic obstacles all medical startups face, they'll be able to see things from the user's point of view anyway. The phenomenon isn't limited to books. 1 was, if I was interested in AI a hot topic then, he told me I could be whatever I wanted when I grew up in and that of a successful startup is going to love, and spend less than you make. They're not very common, but the relative importance of determination and flexibility you need is good hackers: when something's broken, they need to run spreadsheets on it, or do something because that's what you need as a hacker I can't help thinking about how something broken could be fixed within a few months old and doesn't have a probability for it. When Bauhaus designers adopted Sullivan's form follows function, but I don't know any technology companies that have already launched or can launch during YC. I know who favor markets are Marc, Jawed Karim, and Joe Kraus. Part of what he meant was that in some ways we were a step ahead of Venezuela. Successful founders are in love with their companies. It's not just that if you get a lot of valuable advice about business, and they're begging not to be at the very beginning.
You're doing the same thing. The first time I wrote that paragraph, instead of going to an elite college; you learn more from them than the professors. But I remember thinking his company's name was odd. Fourth, they calculated probabilities differently. But we invest in such a roundabout way that the ones you never hear of deals where a VC invests $6 million at a time. What students lack in experience they more than make up in dedication. What does it mean, exactly? IBM. All they saw were carefully scripted campaign spots. There was a good time to start a startup as a 19 year old. For example, knowing what to make, it's mere effort to make software incompatible.
So in practice big companies only get to develop technology in fields where large capital requirements prevent startups from competing with them. But it's not because liberals are smarter that this is only done to suspected spams. In the software world, this idea is known as Worse is Better is found throughout the arts. Most founders who get contacted by corp dev already know what the basic human reaction to a piece of software. Trevor Blackwell is a great artist: it's the one time that hacking is the applied version of what theoretical computer science is the theory of computation about as much as any startup needs initially. It has become one of the few, artificial, easy tests they've faced in life so far. I'm not even sure what they want will also tend to increase it sufficiently the next time you need to simplify and clarify, and the policeman at the intersection of ambition and incompetence: people want to live in the boring sprawl of the valley proper, or live in San Francisco wearing a jeans and a t-shirt, they're nice to you; who knows who you might be able to describe it is all the different kinds of work. The name of a variable or function is an element; a segment of literal text is an element; an element of subjection. White than from an academic philosopher. If I'm right, then it is spam.
But the idea terrified me at first. So rule number zero is: these rules exist for a reason. Miraculously it all turned out ok. When you list everything ambitious people are ambitious about, it's not Lisp that sucks, but Common Lisp. Founders never really liked giving up as much equity as VCs do now. The mathematicians don't seem bothered by this. It was not until Hotmail was launched a year later and say I want to spend as little time inside the minds of spammers as possible. Investors don't like trying to run through people. We're taking on some consulting projects, but we're not willing to admit. The one possible exception are things like working in fast food. But there might be some businesses that it would be better off taking a class on, say, 1970, I think, because they're already running through that in their current state they have nothing to lose. Better check.
If they make your life difficult. The desire for speed is so deeply engrained in us, with our puny computers, that it made sense to invest in startups Y Combinator has been an unprecedented opportunity for learning how to write. It could be interesting to eavesdrop on people, but diluted by a sixth. It would have been happy if just one of the inventors of the transistor. Isaac Newton Newton has a strange syntax as because it has no relation to what you build for them. 20th century cohesion disappeared because of few policy tweaks, we'll be increasingly unable to rely on cold calls and introductions. Your Research which I recommend to anyone ambitious, no matter how inexperienced you seem or how unpromising your idea sounds at first, room to recover from mistakes is a valuable tool in painting too, though perhaps none of them agreed with everything in it. In a sense, when this happens, of wasting something precious. Unfortunately there's no antonym of hapless, which makes software free; the web has made marketing and distribution free; and more powerful programming languages mean development teams can be smaller. Most of the people.
Are there walkable neighborhoods? The informal delivery mechanism was me, showing up in jeans and t-shirts. The paintings that were popular at the low end and the high end, but not design it. Cram schools turn wealth in one generation into credentials in the next 40 years than it does now. I suspect. And the spammers would also, of course, but someone who really devoted himself to work could generate ten or even hundreds of microcancers going at once, because you will never again be so productive. Prognosis Who will win, the super-angels seem to care at all about it. And so ten years ago trying to sell the company. It was as if I'd told him how much girls liked Barry Manilow in the mid 2000s. Why should anyone care about a startup making $3000 a month do not mean the company has all the elements of a good programming language. And if there are any axioms that could be taught better by itself. Really, Google was funded with angel money.
Most startups coming out of organs not designed for that purpose. The only real difference between adults and high school, I let myself believe that my job was to be driven by how well you do in college would be like drinking from a firehose. Dropbox wasn't rejected by all the East Coast VCs. Everyone's model of work is a facebook exclusively for college students. If your city isn't already a startup hub. That's a reasonable proxy for revenue growth because whenever the startup does start trying to maximize this. That cap need not simply rise monotonically. The reason the filters caught them was that both companies in January switched to commercial email senders instead of sending the mails from their own startups and those working for money. I know delivering a prewritten talk your attention is always divided between the audience and the talk—even if you succeed, you'll have the most to lose, seem to see the better idea when it arrives. Increasingly it will mean the end of the Bubble showed that generic business guys don't make such great stuff, but also like an undervalued stock in that so few founders know whether they're default alive or default dead is that the percentage of the company if he'd let us have it. They use the same word for a brilliant or a horribly cheesy solution. I have to give them your full attention.

State School Bond Funds Mostly Paid for Projects Finished Before the Bond Passed
In 2016, California voters were told a statewide $9 billion bond measure called Proposition 51 was needed to fix and improve dilapidated schools.
Voters agreed, and San Diego County schools have received nearly $206 million so far, state data shows. But a Voice of San Diego review found most of the money that ended up in the county – about 81 percent – has gone toward school construction projects completed months or even years before Prop. 51 was approved, and millions have gone toward building new schools in affluent neighborhoods.
In fact, state data shows five of the six largest Prop. 51 allocations in the region went toward the construction of new schools built before Prop. 51 passed in neighborhoods with less than 30 percent of students eligible for free or reduced priced meals, a program primarily available to lower income families, as well as homeless and foster children. Participation rates in reduced-price meals programs is often used as a proxy for poverty.
The local Prop. 51 allocations appear to confirm the fears of former Gov. Jerry Brown and those who have studied inequities in public school facility funding – that wealthy schools benefit the most under the current system.
Combined, the five newer San Diego County schools will receive $99 million, almost half of all Prop. 51 funds doled out to the county so far, with some payments still forthcoming in the form of reimbursements. Unless a district can demonstrate a financial hardship, new construction projects typically require a 50-50 cost split between the state and district. For modernization projects, it’s a 60-40 split.
In order of magnitude, those local schools were:
Double Peak School in San Marcos (San Marcos Unified)
Will receive $31.3 million Prop. 51 dollars, more than any other school in the county. The new K-8 school opened in August 2016, months before ballots were cast for Prop. 51. Just 11.1 percent of Double Peak’s student population in 2017-18 qualified for free or reduced priced meals.
Design 39 Campus in San Diego (Poway Unified)
Received nearly $27.7 million Prop. 51 dollars. The K-8 school opened in late 2014, years before Prop. 51 was put before voters. Just 11.6 percent of students are eligible for subsidized meals.
Pacific Trails Middle School in San Diego (San Dieguito Union High School District)
Will receive more than $15.6 million Prop. 51 dollars. The school opened in February 2016. Just 10.3 percent of students are eligible for subsidized meals.
Camarena Elementary School in Chula Vista (Chula Vista Elementary School District)
Received nearly $13 million Prop. 51 dollars. The Otay Ranch campus opened in July 2013. About 28.8 percent of students are eligible for subsidized meals.
Solana Ranch Elementary School in San Diego (Solana Beach Elementary School District)
Received nearly $11.6 million Prop. 51 dollars. The school opened in 2014. Just 4.5 percent of students are eligible for subsidized meals.
California law permits Prop. 51 money to be spent for project reimbursement, and projects are funded “in the order they are received,” said Jennifer Iida, spokeswoman for the state Department of General Services, which oversees the Office of Public School Construction handling the Prop. 51 payouts.
“For modernization, school districts may receive reimbursement back to August 1998. For new construction, they may apply for reimbursement as long as an application for funding is received before occupancy of the new buildings,” Iida wrote in an email.
School officials locally say their funding applications have been in the state pipeline for years.
Even though California voters may have thought new bond money would pay for existing needs, rather than old ones, Amy Li, fiscal and policy analyst for the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, said, “Due to a variety of factors, a significant portion of school facility projects have been funded on a reimbursement basis, with the state providing its share after the project has been completed.”
Li said the state’s large backlog of unfunded projects that existed prior to Prop. 51 has contributed to the phenomenon. So has the slow release of state funds and the ability of some local districts to proceed with projects while waiting for state funds to come in.
The first round of Prop. 51 money was released in June 2017, Iida said.
For local school district officials, late state money is better than no money. And lower poverty rates just don’t factor into the equation.
“The district’s free and reduced lunch percentage is not a factor OPSC (the state) uses to determine eligibility,” wrote Christine Paik, spokeswoman for Poway Unified. Paik said the Prop. 51 money for the Design 39 school that arrived in July this year was first sought in 2014, two years before the school opened.
When previous state bond money approved in 2006 ran out, districts were left in limbo, Paik said. “With the passage of Prop. 51 in 2018, most school districts — high on the list — are now receiving funding for projects that they locally funded in the past.”
With the schools already paid for, though, districts must decide what to do with the state funds when they do finally arrive. State law allows the reimbursement money to be spent on repaying old local bond money, other projects approved in local bond language or other high-priority capital projects.
Poway board members voted earlier this year to spend roughly $6 million of the Prop. 51 money on old bond debt, and use the rest on other yet-to-be-identified high-priority capital projects, district records show.
Mark Schiel, assistant superintendent of business services at San Marcos Unified, said the district hasn’t yet received the funds for Double Peak, and staff are working on proposals to bring to the board for how the money will be spent.
“In my experience, most projects operate on a reimbursement basis… Double Peak is a perfect example,” Schiel said, adding that the district “has been consistently growing for at least the last two decades. Due to this growth, it was necessary to construct a new school in order to accommodate the growth in our enrollment. We couldn’t wait for State funding in order to build the school.”
San Dieguito Superintendent Robert Haley said they too have yet to receive the funds for Pacific Trails, and when they do, “we will reimburse our Prop AA Bond Fund and use the dollars to fund projects at other school sites we hope to get underway.”
Anthony Millican, spokesman for Chula Vista Elementary School District, said the state money for Camarena Elementary arrived in June 2018 and helped replenish the district’s Mello-Roos account. It will be used to pay for the next new school, slated to open in Otay Ranch as soon as the 2021-22 school year.
“It would have been irresponsible not to have applied for that reimbursement,” Millican wrote in an email. “It took our District and others about two years to receive the funding. I don’t think that voters expected it would take so long to pay out.”
“During the recession years, the state construction funds were not available. All that school districts could do at the time was build new schools at their own expense, such as 100 percent through special local tax assessments (CFDs),” Millican said. With the return of state funding thanks to Prop. 51, new schools can “be built on a more timely basis.”
Solana Beach district officials did not answer questions about their Prop. 51 money.
The state’s existing school facility funding protocols – including a first-come, first-serve policy – have attracted criticism in the past, notably from Brown, who opposed Prop. 51 as California governor in 2016 arguing it favored wealthier and larger districts at the expense of poorer ones.
“It’s a blunderbuss effort that promotes sprawl and squanders money that would be far better spent in low-income communities,” Brown said at the time.
A 2018 study co-produced by Stanford University and the nonprofit PACE found the state’s funding program for new construction projects didn’t systematically favor wealthy districts, but “higher wealth districts are substantially more likely to receive funding” for modernization projects.
Researchers concluded the state’s school facility funding program “does little to dampen inequality except at the very bottom of the wealth distribution. As a result, California’s current system of school facility finance is relatively regressive.”
They noted: “Districts with higher income and districts with higher assessed value per-pupil have significantly higher facility revenues,” and, “districts with larger shares of disadvantaged or nonwhite students tend to have significantly lower revenue for school facility investments.”
State data shows some Prop. 51 money has gone toward improving older facilities in more impoverished neighborhoods, though, where 75 percent or more of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
But only seven such schools in San Diego County have seen any Prop. 51 funds so far, and their combined payments make up less than 6 percent of all county Prop. 51 funds to date.
Those are:
● More than $3 million to the Elite Academy in El Cajon
● More than $2.6 million to Crawford High in San Diego
● More than $2.2 million to Hamilton Elementary in San Diego
● $1.5 million to Kearny High in San Diego
● About $941,000 to Vallecitos Elementary in Fallbrook
● Nearly $859,000 to Mt. Miguel High in Spring Valley
● $536,000 to Mission Middle School in Escondido
Here’s a map of all the Prop. 51 allocations thus far, according to data provided by the state Department of General Services.

The Big Red X marks Crawford High School on the map
It is too late to change Prop. 51, which still has billions to go, but a new statewide $15 billion school and college facility bond measure headed for the March 2020 ballot would prioritize funding based on factors like district financial hardship, a district’s tax base and students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s staff negotiated some of those changes into the latest bond proposal. Newsom tweeted his support Oct. 7, saying, “Millions of students attend school in rundown, unsafe facilities that pose serious obstacles to learning. We’re going straight to the voters to help fix that…”
Like Prop. 51, though, nothing in the 2020 measure prohibits reimbursement of projects completed years ago. Only time will tell just how much money could end up paying for schools and projects already standing – leaving some school facilities in disrepair. *Reposted article from the VOSD by Ashly McGlone of October 14, 2019

BEDS Day 15: Turning Points
James F challenged the BEDSies to write a about a turning point in our lives, and I thought that would be an appropriate blog to write for the halfway point of BEDS. But when I heard that challenge, my first thought was . . . “Which one?” My life has always been changing, from my moves as a child to my somewhat turbulent adulthood, and it’s really this turbulence that has made me, for better or worse, who I am today. Thinking about it, I think I can narrow the list down to three big ones, without which, I would not be the person I am.
Turning Point #1: Finding My Passion, Autumn of 1998: This is the only turning point I’m including before the age 18. You kind of figure that a lot of childhood and adolescence is about finding your identity and changing and growing and whatnot, but his one is an important one for me because this is when I first started to look at music as a career. Up until then, I’d sung in choirs and joined the band, and I knew I was pretty good at the music thing, but it was never something I considered seriously pursuing beyond school. Then, the summer before eighth grade, we moved for the last time in my childhood to a very small school with a very good music program. My choir teacher encouraged me to sing more and showed me that I actually had a good singing voice post-voice change, and the fact that the biggest and burliest football player at the school was also really passionate about singing didn’t hurt. My band director also encouraged my musical development and made band something highly enjoyable for me and my classmates. Also notable in eighth grade was in the influence of my English teacher, who encouraged me to write, something I’d sort of dabbled in before but, again, never really pursued seriously. Music and writing became the driving creative forces in my life from then on, something that continues to this day.
Turning Point #2: Discovering the Social Internet, Autumn of 2003-Spring of 2008, aka “College”: Okay so saying that college was a turning point is kind of a gimme. I mean, that’s pretty much what college is supposed to be. And in most of the very stereotypical ways, it was for me as well. But more important, I think, was that this was really the time I started using the internet beyond just school research and email. Until I got to college and actually had my own computer and so on, I had never really gotten into the social side of the internet, partly because a lot of it didn’t exist yet, and partly because it just wasn’t something that interested me. College changed that, first through sites introduced to me by members of the marching band, then through blogging with friends and family, then through facebook, then YouTube to connect with my Godspell friends, and finally, through the vlogbrothers, the Brotherhood 2.0 project, and the nerdfighters. Without this progression, I never would started vlogging, meaning I never would have found a new creative outlet, wouldn’t have become as interested in things like cinema and book/movie comparisons, and probably wouldn’t have connected with my good friend Jesse. It’s even possible I wouldn’t have started dating Alicia, because although we were friends before that, it’s really through YouTube, and specifically VEDS 2010, that we started to get closer.
Turning Point #3: Facing my Issues, Winter 2013-Present: This is a turning point I feel I’m still in. It started at a time of personal change. I was working my first full-time teaching job in an unfamiliar situation, I had moved in with my fiance and we were in the midst of planning our wedding, and I was in the midst of trying to get my finances--and more specifically my massive amounts of debt--in order. This was the year I started having panic attacks and had to face my anxiety and depression. This is the period of time when I started going to therapy, which got me to address the issues in my past and present that had led to the anxiety; when I gave up on teaching music, something I’d always believed I’d wanted to do, and started working produce at a grocery store, freeing up time for me to pursue more creative and self-fulfilling projects; and when I said my goodbyes to the church, an institution I had been a part of my whole life and, in many ways, is directly and indirectly responsible for my anxiety. It’s a phase of my life that is very much still ongoing, and I’m still not sure how I’m going to come out the other side of it. I’m definitely grateful to have such a support spouse through all this turmoil, and grateful that this is going on at a time when many people are being much more open about these issues, using the social internet to air them out, in much the same way I’m doing this month. So, what kind of Matt will emerge after this turning point runs its course really remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, we’re halfway through the month, fellow VEDSies, so until next time, see you tomorrow.

Trump’s Russia Connections Do Not Connote Collusion, Political Corruption Has Enriched Family and Friends Well Before the Donald

(All Your News articles are submitted by readers of Citizen Truth and do not reflect the views of Citizen Truth. CT believes in the power of regular people sharing their stories and experiences with each other and working together to find the truth. We are proud to share your stories, share yours here.)
The following information is sourced from Peter Schweizer’s recently released book, Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends. I would also recommend reading his New York Times bestseller, Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich for an illuminating look into the extensive corruption and cronyism in the Clinton Foundation which prompted a renewed FBI investigation into the pay-to-play politics perpetrated while Hillary was secretary of state.
But let’s take a look at the Donald since all my friends on the Left want him impeached.
Before Donald Trump ran for president, he conducted business around the world and would ink deals with some shady individuals, a necessary task in the dog-eat-dog world of New York City real estate. His alleged collusion with Russia is a nonexistent crime. Collusion is not included as a crime in the U.S. Code. Trump is getting the attention no other president has for potential conflicts of interest because he is the first businessman/non-politician to become president of the largest economy and military in the world. Sure, the potential is there, but let’s deal in facts, not possibilities. There has been no collusion or conspiracy with the Russians to propel Mr. Trump to the White House.
youtube
However, he did have some notable Russian business connections.
The Trump SoHo project, a $450 million, 46-story hotel condominium on Spring Street in New York was a Trump Organization-run development partnered with Bayrock Group, which provided the capital for the 2010-completed project (the Trump Organization exited the property late last year). Bayrock was founded by Tevfik Arif, a Kazakh real estate mogul from the former Soviet Union. Arif had ties to Kazakh businessman turned politician, Viktor Khrapunov who created three LLCs in April 2013 that corresponded to condos purchased in the Trump SoHo building. Trump was not a beneficiary of the sales. The seller was Bayrock/Sapir Organization, LLC.
Felix Sater was a Russian emigre and was also involved in the SoHo project. Sater pleaded guilty to racketeering in 1998. He worked for Bayrock and apparently carried a business card that listed himself as a “senior advisor to Donald Trump.”
On November 3, 2015, Sater emailed Michael Cohen (Trump’s personal attorney): “Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it…I will get all of Putin’s team to buy in on this, I will manage the process.” Sater said he obtained financing for the Trump Moscow hotel deal from VTB Bank, sanctioned at the time by the US government. A letter of intent for the deal was signed as Trump’s campaign for president picked up steam. However, permits and other favors were needed to get the deal done in Russia.
Sater pitched a Trump visit to Moscow to tout the deal in return for Putin publicly praising Trump. For some reason, Sater claimed that Trump would not only benefit from a historic real estate deal in Moscow, but would in turn clear a path for Trump to be in the White House. No one knows why the two points were connected. Putin and Trump did end up having nice things to say about each other during the 2016 campaign though. Regardless, the real estate deal went nowhere, petering out in January 2016.
According to Schweizer, “No one knows (at this writing) whether the deal provides any context or prologue for the now infamous June 2016 meeting between the Trump campaign and a Russian delegation promising kompromat on Hillary Clinton. Cohen would downplay Sater and his credibility to the Post and the Times, dismissing his talk of a direct pipeline to Putin as “salesmanship.” New York Magazine reporter Andrew Rice states Sater and Cohen knew each other as teenagers–perhaps explaining Sater’s excitement, expressed to Cohen: “Can you believe two guys from Brooklyn are going to elect a president?” There’s nothing wrong with a politician obtaining dirt on their opponent. Clinton was doing it. Everyone does it. That does not signal obvious collusion.
Unfortunately, in a pivoting era painting Russia as the boogeyman again as America was during the Cold War, Trump’s massaging of Russian-American relations are seen as collusion instead of a savvy retooling of a reckless American foreign policy.
youtube
Another Bayrock connection was Tamir Sapir from the country of Georgia, formerly in the Soviet Union. He sold electronics to KGB agents from a storefront in Manhattan. Tamir’s son, Alex, was involved in the Trump SoHo project. Alex Sapir’s business partner and brother-in-law is Rotem Rosen, a former right-hand man of Soviet born Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev, an oligarch with longstanding ties to Putin.
Leviev keeps a photo of the Russian president on a shelf in his office. When Trump was looking for deals to do in Moscow, he met with Leviev in 2007 to discuss. Leviev also sold Jared Kushner a portion of the old New York Times Building in Times Square in 2015 shortly after Trump announced he was running for president. Mortgages for the Trump SoHo building were issued by Sam Kislin, a Ukrainian businessman who partnered with Tamir Sapir in an electronics business. In 1976, they sold 200 TVs to Trump’s Commodore Hotel and ended up establishing a commodities business trading with the Soviet Union. The FBI has labeled Kislin a member of the Russian mob. Interpol claimed Kislin’s commodities firm was used by two Uzbekistan mobsters for fraud and embezzlement.
The Trump SoHo deal was completed well before Trump ran for office, but business relationships can be complicated and “create alliances that lead to vulnerabilities,” Schweizer wrote. Trump has garnered unprecedented attention due to his long history of business transactions. The first businessman with no political experience is now in the most powerful position in the world and he has felt the brunt an endless stream of criticism and accusations of conspiratorial ties to Russia from the liberal mainstream media with zero evidence to back up that up.
Professor Zephyr Teachout of Fordham declared, “Trump is upending 240 years of tradition and a core conviction of the founders: that a stable, fare, representative republic depends on protecting against the foreign corruption of our office holders.” Teachout appears to be completely unaware of the Chinese and Ukrainian commercial deals done by the son of Vice President Joe Biden or the financial ties between Senator Mitch McConnell’s family and the Chinese government, both stories that are covered at length in Secret Empires.
There are no coincidences when it comes to political corruption.
— The Other Donald (@Donalds2012) May 6, 2018
Foreign corruption has rightly been a fear of America’s leaders. Elbridge Gerry, the country’s fifth vice president, warned, “Persons having foreign attachments will be sent among us & insinuated into our councils, in order to be made instruments for their purposes. Everyone knows the vast sums laid out in Europe for secret services.” Liberals and never-Trumpers would have you believe our current president is one of those individuals sent among us, serving Russia as opposed to the U.S.
Schweizer wrote: “FOREIGN COMMERCIAL ENTANGLEMENTS ARE A PROBLEM. BUT THEY DIDN’T BEGIN WITH TRUMP” (all caps my own).
When Penny Pritzker became commerce secretary during the Obama administration, the issue of receiving payments or things of value from a foreign government or its agents (the Emoluments clause) never came up. Nevertheless, she owned commercial real estate properties and hotels that did plenty of business with the U.S. government and foreign governments and did not sever her ties to them once in office. Trump has been called on to sell all his holdings or to transfer his business interests into a blind trust. But, Trump famously did not do either, instead appointing his children to run his empire and removing himself from decision making, far from blind.

Barack Obama’s best friend from his Chicago days is Marty Nesbitt. The Chicago Tribune called him, “the First Friend.” President Obama went hard after certain industries during his time as the regulator in chief, especially oil and gas, financial services, and healthcare. Nesbitt was always in the right place at the right time to purchase companies on the cheap that dropped in value from regulatory threats or actions from Obama. He never had to call to schedule a time to talk with the president, he always had his friend’s ear.
Nesbitt serves as CEO of Vistria, an investment firm. The industries Vistria targeted were the same industries Obama was attacking with government regulation. Vistria teamed up with two larger private equity firms to purchase the University of Phoenix’s parent company, Apollo Education Group, the stock price of which fell 90% from January 2009 to January 2016. Of course, the Obama administration approved the sale to Vistria with unprecedentedly favorable terms. To sweeten the deal, the viable competition was crushed or completely out of business. Soon thereafter, federal funds flowed back to the school. Similar smash and grab maneuvers benefitting Nesbitt occurred in the financial services and railroad industries and are covered in depth in Schweizer’s investigative tale.
The story is yet to be told on how Trump will help enrich himself and his friends and family with his new office on Pennsylvania Avenue. However, it bears repeating that he is far from the first to have some shady business dealings in his past. In fact, many politicians have used their public office to make their family members rich while in office. Though Trump’s situation does leave him open to foreign powers currying favor, he appears to be putting America first in all facets of his work. Paying off a porn star to be quiet is not against the law in any way. Meeting with Russians does not prove collusion. Let’s dial back the outrage and focus on what is.
youtube
Trump certainly has a sketchy personal attorney in Michael Cohen, but no crimes have been committed and no collusion has been hinted at despite the endless and expanding Mueller investigation. Attempting to impeach Trump over morally bankrupt deals and decisions made many years ago will be a massive mistake if undertaken by the Democrats and would be a godsend for Republicans in Congress. For proof of that, look no further than Bill Clinton. Trump maintains a conflict of interest by not completely detaching himself from his business empire, but he has yet to show a willingness to use that to enrich himself. Yet, he remains vulnerable. And power obviously corrupts.
The last few presidents have been catapulted to power promising to end the political cronyism running rampant in the Washington DC swamp. Will Trump be any different? Or will he cave like all other presidents and politicians have? I guess we’ll find out. One thing’s for sure, this president is unlike any politician we have had in office in our nation’s history.
Here’s what’s important today. President Trump is putting more money into the pockets of struggling taxpaying Americans (90% to be exact) with the tax cuts and is giving businesses a chance to succeed through significant deregulation. Unfortunately, he is getting us back on the warpath with Bolton and Pompeo now in his ear, getting us out of the Iran deal this week and ultimately risking World War III in the Middle East. But that is another topic for another day.

They Were Victorian Dandies Who Made Art. Now They’re On the Outs.
Once in the late 1970s, somebody insulted David McDermott’s mother at a party, so he went to Tiffany & Company and had a note engraved: “Mr. David Walter McDermott is pleased to announce the elimination of _______ from his guest list.”
The note, which was mailed out to the offender’s friends, now hangs on the wall of Peter McGough’s apartment in Greenwich Village. “Now, that’s pretty brilliant, to insult someone at such a high level,” he said, laughing at the memory.
But it is now Mr. McGough’s turn to be disinvited.
Half of the Victorian-inspired art duo McDermott & McGough, Mr. McGough has written a memoir about his partnership with Mr. McDermott, “I’ve Seen the Future and I’m Not Going,” in which he recounts their bizarre journey as time-traveling artists known as much for their retro lifestyle as for their pseudo-historical art.
They dressed in Edwardian clothes, drove a 1913 Model-T Ford and eschewed modern conveniences. As lovers, they shared an apartment on Avenue C that lacked a telephone, television or electric lights.
But they have not had a cordial conversation since last spring, which not only makes it awkward for Mr. McGough to promote his new book, but also practically impossible for him to finish a series of drawings based on their paintings from the 1980s.
“He’s very angry with me,” Mr. McGough said, in his walk-up apartment stuffed with artwork and bric-a-brac. “We fight about money, and he blames me for a lot.”
Mr. McDermott is said to be living in Ireland, having left the United States after the Internal Revenue Service seized the couple’s upstate house and other assets because the men didn’t pay income tax (he later renounced his United States citizenship).
As the more doctrinaire of the two, Mr. McDermott never joined the digital age. He has no smartphone or email, Mr. McGough said, and it’s not clear if he has even heard of Facebook and Twitter.
Contacting him is not quite as antiquated as sending a messenger on horseback, but close. Mr. McGough has to first send a text message to a man named James, a friend of Mr. McDermott’s in Ireland. If James happens to be in Mr. McDermott’s presence, he passes on the message, at which point Mr. McDermott may or may not agree to speak.
If Mr. McDermott is not in the room, it’s unclear if the message is ever conveyed. “He’s been fighting with me for a year,” Mr. McGough said. A recent attempt at détente was met with silence. “He didn’t want to talk to me. He said he’s not in the mood.”
Instead, Mr. McGough received a letter from Mr. McDermott, sealed in black wax, with the lyrics to the old song “Thanks for the Memory.”
Old-Fashioned Party People
That certainly would not be their most epic fight. Their roller-coaster partnership began in 1980, shortly after Mr. McGough, then 21, moved to New York City from a suburb of Syracuse, N.Y., seeking glamour and excitement.
One night, while attending a New Wave Vaudeville show at Irving Plaza, he met Mr. McDermott, who was 27 and a downtown club performer. A few weeks later, he went to a dinner party at Mr. McDermott’s apartment on Avenue B and became fascinated with his 1920s-era lifestyle.
“He is incredible how his brain works — that’s what fascinated me,” Mr. McGough said. “I found most people were nice and fun, but it never went anywhere. But with him, it went someplace.”
The two became inseparable, not only as lovers, but also as artists who collaborated on paintings, photographs, films and sculpture. Mr. McDermott brought time and history to their work, and Mr. McGough brought homoeroticism and sexual politics.
“A Friend of Dorothy,” perhaps their best-known painting, features slurs like “queer” and “mary” written in antique typeface on a sunny yellow background.
The men spent their 1980s in downtown Manhattan dancing at the Mudd Club, attending openings at Fun Gallery, dining with the Schnabels at Indochine. And as their art career took off, they attracted people into their fantasy world, a candlelit “Barry Lyndon” on the bombed-out Lower East Side.
Their 18th-century house in upstate New York had a hand pump for water, a hearth for cooking and tin tubs for laundry.
When they dropped by Andy Warhol’s Factory wearing top hats and dress shirts with detachable collars, the receptionist would announce, “Those old-fashioned people are here again.”
“It was this mania for fun,” said John Patrick Fleming, a fashion designer who has known both men since their days partying at Danceteria. “Lots of important, successful people got lured into the McDermott and McGough fun train. One time, they had Bianca Jagger upstairs, wooing her with vegetarian food.”
Burning Through Money
The partying, however, was not sustainable. “With David, there was never any control,” Mr. Fleming said. “He was not controllable when he had a penny, and he was not controllable when he had millions. There was never any reasoning. There were no boundaries.”
In the book, Mr. McGough, who is more compromising in temperament, recounts how Mr. McDermott fought with gallery owners, alienated their friends and burned though a fortune to build his antiquated world.
There was the 1930 Graham-Paige automobile and the Model T; the $7,500 monthly rent on a Brooklyn studio in a former bank, where the duo once hosted a costume party inspired by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Egyptian Fete of 1913; the team of assistants; the rooms of period antiques; the construction of a $50,000 stone wall at their circa 1790 house in Oak Hill, N.Y.
When Mr. McDermott became enamored with a young man that Mr. McGough calls “Bastian” in the book, the pair moved him into Oak Hill and made him a living doll. They bought Bastian two Morgan horses, sent him to train as a carriage driver at a Virginia farm and dressed him in old-fashioned riding gear.
Although Mr. McDermott and Mr. McGough ended their romance around 1985 (Mr. McGough said that Mr. McDermott had multiple affairs that precipitated the breakup), they continued making art for decades after.
Their works were included in three Whitney Biennials, and were exhibited by prestigious galleries including Cheim & Read in New York, Galerie Jérôme de Noirmont in Paris and Bruno Bischofberger in Zurich.
But in 1992, the I.R.S. showed up at their studio. The couple owed six figures in back taxes, having ignored all their bills. The government seized the Oak Hill property and auctioned off its contents. The Brooklyn studio was soon gone, as were the Model T and Graham-Paige touring car.
Mr. McDermott was devastated by the losses and moved to Ireland in 1994. Mr. McGough joined him, but he missed New York and his friends, and moved back to Manhattan in 1998. (Mr. McGough was also suffering from AIDS, which he learned he had in 1997.)
By the mid-2000s, McDermott & McGough were again riding high. But earlier mistakes were repeated, and the couple burned through more money. Mr. McDermott “lost this big mansion in Ireland and he blamed me,” Mr. McGough said.
(Several attempts to reach Mr. McDermott through his friend James were unsuccessful. James eventually responded to an email query, apologizing for taking so long to reply, but follow-up emails went unreturned.)
In writing the memoir and telling his side of the story, Mr. McGough could be seen as evening the score, since Mr. McDermott’s erratic behavior so often derailed the duo’s career. “Isn’t this his ‘Mommie Dearest’ moment?,” Mr. Fleming said.
Mr. McGough downplayed any psychodrama behind the memoir. The motivation was simpler, he said: “I thought maybe there’s money in it, because I was broke.”
‘Odd Bookends’
These days, Mr. McGough seems to have settled into a scrappier bohemian life in the Village. If he is no longer rich, he is still making art and grateful to be alive.
“I get out of bed, I stand up and I say, ‘You made it.’ And I immediately get in a good mood,” he said on a Thursday afternoon last fall.
He was perched with his Chihuahua, Queenie, on a French divan upholstered in green velvet. He wore pale-blue trousers with a pin stripe, which he had custom made in the wide-legged, high-waisted style of the 1920s. His thick, steel-gray hair was swept back Gatsby style and lacquered with what looked like pomade.
He still lives like a man out of the past, though he has moved up in period and incorporated semi-modern conveniences. “My cooker is from 1930, and the kitchen sink and the bathroom are 1930,” said Mr. McGough, who was charming, fun to talk to and utterly un-self-serious. “I like to think I’m a bohemian living here during the Depression.”
Perhaps out of habit, Mr. McGough seemed to want his partner’s opinion of his aesthetic choices, since Mr. McDermott had never visited his one-bedroom railroad apartment, which he began renting three years ago.
“If he comes here, what would he like and not like?” he said.
Pointing to a side table of his own creation, affixed with large graphic phalluses, Mr. McGough said, “He’d probably think the table is vulgar.”
Despite an ocean separating them and Mr. McDermott’s unresponsiveness at present, Mr. McGough still sees himself, and perhaps always will, as one half of McDermott & McGough. “We’re so bound together,” he said. “We are odd bookends that held up a life and a career. I can’t imagine my life without him in it.”

Seattle Reads presents Thi Bui (Tuesday, April 16) 6:30 - 8 PM @ Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS)
3639 Martin Luther King Jr Way S, Seattle, Washington 98144
Thi Bui will discuss "The Best We Could Do." The evening will also feature a staged reading from the book, adapted by Susan Lieu and directed by Kathy Hsieh, in partnership with Book-It Repertory Theatre.
"The Best We Could Do" is a haunting memoir about the search for a better future and a longing for a simpler past. Thi Bui documents her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves in America. As the child of a country and a war she can’t remember, Bui’s dreamlike artwork brings to life her journey to understanding her own identity in a way that only comics can.
Thi Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the end of the Vietnam War, and came to the United States in 1978 as part of the “boat people” wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. Her debut graphic memoir, The Best We Could Do (Abrams ComicArts, 2017), has been selected as UCLA’s Common Book for 2017, a National Book Critics Circle finalist in autobiography, an Eisner Award finalist in Reality Based Comics, and made several Best of 2017 book lists, including Bill Gates’s top five picks. Bui is also the Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator of A Different Pond, a picture book by the poet Bao Phi (Capstone, 2017). Her short comics can be found online at the Nib, PEN America, and BOOM California. Seattle Reads is a “one book, one city” program, where people are encouraged to read and discuss the same book. It’s designed to deepen engagement in literature through reading and discussion. - Everyone is invited to participate in Seattle Reads by reading the featured book, joining in a book discussion, and/or attending programs with the featured writer.

(Tuesday, April 16) 7-9PM @ Elliott Bay Book Company 1521 10th Ave, Seattle, Washington 98122
Hanif Abdurraqib at Elliott Bay Book Company
Elliott Bay Book Company presents Hanif Abdurraqib for his New York Times Bestselling book GO AHEAD IN THE RAIN.
How does one pay homage to A Tribe Called Quest? The seminal rap group brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces such as The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Seventeen years after their last album, they resurrected themselves with an intense, socially conscious record, We Got It from Here . . . Thank You 4 Your Service, which arrived when fans needed it most, in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib digs into the group’s history and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself. The result is as ambitious and genre-bending as the rap group itself.
Abdurraqib traces the Tribe’s creative career, from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Their work is placed in the context of the broader rap landscape of the 1990s, one upended by sampling laws that forced a reinvention in production methods, the East Coast-West Coast rivalry that threatened to destroy the genre, and some record labels’ shift from focusing on groups to individual MCs. Throughout the narrative Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact. Whether he’s remembering The Source magazine cover announcing the Tribe’s 1998 breakup or writing personal letters to the group after bandmate Phife Dawg’s death, Abdurraqib seeks the deeper truths of A Tribe Called Quest; truths that—like the low end, the bass—are not simply heard in the head, but felt in the chest. This event is Free and Open to the Public.

Respite Care ideal if you’re a care giver for small children/family/the elderly/the hospitalzied or those in long term care -includes a bonus prayer for protection in all your endeavors. In March 2019 Mercury retrograde is in Pisces, which means that is possible for miscommunication to show up in the political arena and the media, especially in ideals. There may be assumptions and confusion that originate from not seeing what was real early on. Generally this is a good time to complete projects you started before we entered into this time frame although I would not start anything new during this period. Mercury the planet will not go direct again until April 16th!!!

Entertainment: Beauty is in the eye of these beholders
LOS ANGELES — Thousands of cat-eyed, contoured-cheeked, glitter-doused women — and more than a few painted men.
Nearly all the bathrooms at the convention center had been converted to gender-neutral. Staff throughout the floor wore T-shirts with a welcome list on the back that read:
“All races, all genders, all ages, all countries of origin, all sexual orientations, all religions” as well as “all glamazons, all natural beauties, all unicorns.”
Clad in crop tops, Janelle Tejan and Phoenix Alden, both 22 and models from Colorado, were jittery with excitement an hour into the first day.
“I held Laura Lee’s hand, she told me she loved my look,” gushed Tejan, of Colorado Springs, delighted that Lee, a makeup artist with nearly 5 million YouTube subscribers, had taken the time to speak briefly to her. Tejan stroked her ombre gray bobbed wig.
She beamed when asked about the silver stars around her eyes, affixed with tweezers and eyelash glue. “I want to be a successful YouTuber some day,” she said.
“I came for Drew Barrymore,” interjected Alden, of Denver, her eyes ringed in pink and orange, the only pop of color standing out against her black suspenders holding up her black miniskirt, a black fedora perched on her head. Alden, who is in the Air Force, had just taken a selfie with the actress on her way to the booth for Barrymore’s 6-year-old Flower Beauty brand. Tejan nodded in agreement: “My grandmother loves Drew Barrymore.”
As she participated in a meet-and-greet with fans, Barrymore said events like this were a particularly useful way to reach out to beauty shoppers. These consumers demand a personal touch — often literally, in the form of a hug or selfie. The question, she said, is: “How are you paying attention to me as a loud, confident individual?”
A record 23,300 of those loud, confident individuals attended Beautycon LA, an event that is equal parts competitive shopping scene, feel-good festival and marketing bonanza. Described as Sephora meets Coachella, Beautycon is not unlike a theme park, with hourslong lines, expensive food and the occasional chance to scream. Tickets range from $50 for a single-day pass to $1,000 for two days of skip-the-lines VIP treatment.
Beauty brands spend anywhere from $5,000 to more than $1 million on their Beautycon build-outs. From these temporary havens, companies test and sell products, hand out samples, gather email addresses and host appearances with digital influencers.
“Consumers are now discovering and experiencing brands in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago,” said Gustavo Andriani, senior vice president and general manager at MAC North America, a division of Estée Lauder Cos. An ad in a magazine or a presence on social media is not enough, he added. “We need to physically be where they are.”
Both brands and attendees come with a #picsoritdidnthappen mentality. Shoppers are after social media bragging rights and companies see those same posts as a chance to spread their marketing dollars beyond the convention center’s walls. Dressed-up corporate photo bait filled the hall, including a dozen pink carpets, complete with flattering lighting and a Beautycon backdrop. Swings at Target, Aveda and Rimmel London and shirtless men almost everywhere — wielding lipstick-tipped power drills at MAC, covered in metallic body paint at Masque Bar — were the quick pic gimmicks du jour.
‘The Next Gen of QVC’
“You don’t need lipstick. Lipstick needs you,” one of Beautycon’s hallmark sayings, was stripped in pink block text across the wall behind a pink sofa in the pink-carpeted enclave of Moj Mahdara, chief executive officer of Beautycon. Clad in a black T-shirt and Nike Air Max 1/97 sneakers, Mahdara slipped into this relatively quiet space backstage, her 4-month-old son, Neev, leaning against her shoulder.
A 40-year-old, gay Persian-American, Mahdara was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. She moved to Orange County, California, in 1998, then to Los Angeles two years laterin search of a way into the music industry. Instead, she found a more viable path as a digital strategist, helping consumer and entertainment brands develop online campaigns with celebrities like Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani. She built and sold a digital agency, and worked with a number of large, consumer-facing brands, including HTC and Lacoste.
After briefly toying with the idea of getting an MBA, Mahdara decided instead to take that money and invest it in direct-to-consumer brands like Outdoor Voices and Harry’s razors. In 2013, as she was growing her new digital consulting agency, Mahdara’s lawyer told her about an upcoming gathering of beauty YouTubers, a group of digital personalities gathering in Los Angeles (IRL, as the kids would say). Although she says, “I’m not a beauty person” — she does not wear makeup — Mahdara was then looking to start her own digital influencer management company, on the hunt for what she said was “the next gen of QVC.”
Mahdara, who had given a somewhat rambling TEDx Talk that year titled “Everyone is a Media Company,” saw the potential to open the YouTuber meet-up to the fans. Six weeks later, she helped put together the first Beautycon to be open to the public, investing roughly $250,000 of her own money. Brands like NYX Professional Makeup and bareMinerals signed on and 6,000 people showed up to the free event, forming a line around a block in Hollywood. By the next year, Mahdara had bought out the majority of the shares of the event’s original organizer and became Beautycon’s CEO.
Mahdara envisioned a new experiential retail model. “There’s a lot of stuff for music and a lot of stuff for gaming and a lot of stuff for sports,” Mahdara said. “What became abundantly clear to me is that there was nothing for young women and people in general who were interested in beauty but not sure how they fit into that world.” Her goal was not just an offline experience but a marketplace, one that would translate into sales for participating beauty companies.
In 2014, Beautycon added New York to its lineup; by 2015, Dallas and London joined the list. (London is still in the mix; Dallas is not.) In 2016, the Los Angeles event was big enough to move into the convention center and last year it expanded from one day to two. This year has been a tipping point of sorts, starting with the two-day New York show warranting space in the sprawling Javits Center, and big brands like MAC and Target coming on board.
Traditional celebrities signed on, too, and their appearances on the main stage have drawn headlines and more publicity for Beautycon. The keynote by “Black-ish” actress Tracee Ellis Ross in Los Angeles last year about expanding the definition of beauty — “I’m inviting you to let your ‘you’ flag fly,” she said — became fodder for a later appearance on Conan O’Brien.
“Moj and her team recognize that beauty is about more than just slick advertising,” Debra Perelman, chief executive of Revlon, said in an email. They “realized early that in the digital age you can’t just talk to women, but instead need to build a deep, personal relationship with them.”
‘This is the Future of Beauty’
Beautycon is a festival, yes, but it’s also a data-gathering machine. Two hundred beacons sprinkled throughout the floor in Los Angeles allowed organizers to heat-map the crowds, showing where the largest groups of attendees were congregating. Beautycon held eight focus groups each day that weekend, talking to 320 consumers about their shopping habits and attitudes on health and wellness. Each wristband was equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, allowing the organizers to monitor the path people took, how long they lingered, and if they visited a booth multiple times.
Coupled with registration information, Beautycon can paint a detailed picture of these shoppers. “We know what she wants, we know what she’s missing, we know what she needs,” said Richelieu Dennis, founder of SheaMoisture products, owner of Essence magazine and a Beautycon investor.
Beautycon’s connection to customers, paired with the combination of content and commerce, has helped Mahdara raise $20 million from investors. The most recent round of financing raised $6 million, led by the New Voices Fund, a $100 million fund that invests in businesses owned or managed by women of color and run by Dennis. “This is the future of beauty — this is the future of business,” he said of Beautycon.
In Los Angeles, about 60 percent of brands offered attendees a chance to shop on site, either at full price or a discount. Companies at Beautycon also keep close tabs on the e-commerce lift afterward, using special discount codes and tracking conversion rates from follow-up emails. The festival’s implied revenue per square foot, meaning both the dollars spent on site and the resulting online sales, was $4,288 last year, Mahdara said. (Apple, for comparison, saw sales per square foot upward of $5,100 last year in its average store, according to eMarketer.) At this point, Beautycon does not take a cut of on-site sales, but organizers say they may revisit that option in the future.
Beautycon is expanding, both in the brands it attracts (B-Well, its push toward health and wellness, drew the likes of Kind snacks, Quip toothbrushes and West Elm furniture) and its locations (international dates and cities, beyond London, are in the works).
Mahdara was tight-lipped on a new “experiential commerce” concept coming this fall, which she said was a “really exciting new format both digitally and experientially.”
The secrecy is tied, in no small part, to the new competition Beautycon now faces. Beauty retail behemoth Sephora, owned by LVMH, is starting its own festival in downtown Los Angeles this fall, dubbed Sephoria. Tickets range from $99 to $449; each level includes a bag of giveaways (Beautycon attendees needed to spend $199 for the “Hauler” package to receive such a thing). The overlap in participating brands is minimal. Sephora appears to be using its considerable clout in the industry to attract some of the most popular prestige names, ones that were not at Beautycon in Los Angeles, such as Pat McGrath Labs and Fenty Beauty by Rihanna (Fenty is produced by Kendo, another division of LVMH).
Mahdara says Beautycon had been in talks with Sephora for a year, presenting a similar idea, and that she was surprised at their decision to stage such an event themselves. “Our audience knows that beauty is not just about products,” Mahdara says. “They can throw a party as they wish.”
A Sephora spokeswoman described its relationship with Beautycon as “complementary” and said “the concept for Sephoria was developed internally long before we shared anything with potential partners.” Beautycon was part of the proposal process, she added, but Sephora “decided to go with a different partner.”
Instagram-Ready Experiences
Instead of singing for their supper, Beautycon-goers selfie for their samples. At the recent gathering, staffers in the CoverGirl booth scanned phone after phone to make sure attendees who waited in line to take a photo in front of its branded backdrop (with its new slogan, “I am what I makeup,” in neon lights) also followed the brand on Instagram before they would hand over a full-size mascara sample.
The exchange was surprising to watch, if only for how normal it appeared to be for both sides. This younger generation of shoppers knows that to get something, you have to give something.
An email address is the bare minimum. Amorepacific, a South Korean beauty conglomerate of 28 brands, wove attendees through a multistationed testing tour, with a representative explaining the benefits of products at each brand stop. At the end, shoppers received a tote bag with five single-use samples. Those who shared their emails were given an additional travel-size sample.
The goal of the booth, which cost “multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars,” according to Jessica Hanson, president of Amorepacific US, was to introduce its family of brands to more shoppers. To that end, perhaps more popular than the samples were the headbands Amorepacific gave away: white, flashing branded crowns, which attendees then wore, voluntarily and enthusiastically, throughout the convention hall as a kind of walking advertisement for the company.
On its maiden Beautycon voyage, Aveda, a division of Estée Lauder, lured attendees to its booth with a towering paper cherry tree next to a swing for photographs. The prop was a popular gathering spot over the weekend, providing ample backdrop for a logo and solving the eternal what-do-I-do-with-my-hands posing question.
As people waited in line, Aveda staffers chatted with them about the Cherry Almond collection, which the company introduced the week of Beautycon, handing out scent sticks and samples. The collection was designed to appeal to women with long hair — 73 percent of millennials have hair that is shoulder length or longer, the brand says — with promises of “touchably soft” tresses. It comes in bright-pink packaging and has a sweet scent.
Aveda also handed out coupons for 15 percent off a shopper’s first online order if placed by the end of the month and offered 20 percent off all purchases on site, a rarity for the brand. “We don’t discount very often at all,” said Cydney Strommen, director of marketing communications for Aveda-North America. Unlike the fashion world, which has been plagued by pricing pressure and rampant discounting, beauty brands very rarely go on sale.
Nearly three-quarters of Beautycon’s target audience — Gen Z-ers and younger millennials that Mahdara calls “pivotals” — say they are influenced more by “content creators” than traditional celebrities, according to Beautycon’s research. Many of the digital stars that were the original draw have catapulted into massive, and massively profitable, operations, some boasting major sponsorship packages with five-figure appearance deals.
“For regular people, you are like, ‘Who are these people?'” said Ukonwa Ojo, chief marketing officer for consumer beauty at Coty, which had booths for CoverGirl, Rimmel London and Sally Hansen at Beautycon in New York and Los Angeles this year. But beauty junkies “know them and they love them,” she said.
Coty sees Beautycon as a rare chance for consumers to experiment with its products. The three showcased at Beautycon are primarily sold in drugstores and big box chains without a testing option. “For a lot of people it’s the first time they ever been to a place where they could try all of our products before,” Ojo said.
These beauty-obsessed consumers are particularly valuable resources for companies, she added, as they are more open to fashion-forward looks and willing to experiment with new products that have yet to go to a wide market.
In Los Angeles, Rimmel London introduced 14 new shades of its Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour, as well as the Wonder’Fully Real Mascara. “If they love it, you’ve won an advocate,” Ojo said. And winning an advocate, she added, means that shopper will share it with his or her followers, who may then want to try it themselves. Every one, after all, is an influencer.
‘I Feel So Amazing Here’
From his perch in a hall conference room, one floor up and overlooking the mazelike scene below, Beautycon’s executive vice president, Tripp Mahan, smiled. He considers himself the event’s “conductor,” with the stated goal of “curated chaos.”
“It has to be a very amped-up atmosphere,” he said.
How does one turn a light-filled, cement-floored, 347,000-square-foot hall into a party before noon? With a thumping DJ booth at the entrance and a series of choreographed mobs. Instead of escorting the talent to the booths quickly and discreetly in a golf cart, Mahan prefers to parade them through the show floor with security detail.
The resulting swarm leads to what Beautycon calls “fandomonium.” Kardashian West was a notable exception; the Beautycon team went to great lengths to remove people from the backstage area where she entered.
“If Meryl Streep walked up to you and me, we would just act cool and move on,” Mahan said. But the fan-influencer relationship is much more intimate and intense. “Stars are just obligated to do a selfie,” Mahan said.
Michael David Magaraci, a 20-year-old from Long Island who trekked to Beautycon by himself, walked into the hall and straight to the main stage, where he snagged a seat in the front row and waited for hours to see Kardashian West, who was promoting her KKW Beauty line.
“Growing up, I was always taught, ‘You don’t wear makeup, you’re a boy,'” he said. He was wearing no fewer than six of Kardashian West’s products on his face, including lip gloss and concealer, his thick brows groomed and filled in, and KKW’s blue eye shadow artfully swiped across his lids. “Beautycon is celebrating diversity, and through that diversity comes confidence,” he added. “I feel so amazing here.”

Ahhhh! car insurance?!?
Hello, I am a 18 year old freshmen in college. My College is approximately 20 minutes away. Since I was very very busy with my studies, I was unable to get a car permit / Driver License. Now that I am at spring break, I am planning to take my permit test, and start driving, so I dont have to ask my father to drop me off at chosen locations. Right now, I am earning $11 an hour. I get about $320 every two weeks. Now I have heard from my friends that Since I am 18 years old and my parents will not pay for my insurance, It will cost me about $300 for insurance every month, $100 for gas, and about $500 for required checking for cars. As you know, for a check of $320 every 2 weeks, I will not be able to pay for my car insurance and gas. Now heres the question. What should I do? I mean, I really need a car and I need to think of a good strategy. so that I will be able to pay for my car insurance. If you know any great, cheap insurance deals for someone my age, that'll be fantastic. Thank you.""

I want to sign up for health insurance but I'm not sure which company to go through as there are so many. I went through the healthcare marketplace from the federal government which just said I need to get medicaid. I'm in the process of applying for medicaid as well. But if the medicaid doesn't work out or isn't very effective what is anyone's opinion on the best insurance company for me. I'm looking to spend only around $100 for a monthly premium. Any feedback will help me narrow it down and know what to consider. Thanks for the help.

Are VW Beetles cheap or expensive to insure?
I've been looking into getting a car (I'm 25, female and it will be my first car) and I'm really loving VW Beetles. I'm leaning more towards getting an old one (say around 1970), maybe the convertible version, if I can find one. Either I would restore it myself or buy it already restored... it depends what I can find. On one hand it would be fun to restore it myself and I'd learn a lot, but on the other hand it could become quite costly. I'm just wondering whether or not they are cheap or expensive to insure? I'm thinking they would be fairly cheap? The reason the beetle appeals to me is it's very cute and also they get great gas mileage. Will insurance companies charge Yahoo Answers users more than others due to cheating on the written test?
Before getting a license (or permit), a potential driver is supposed to study a booklet of information about how to drive safety, traffic laws, etc., and pass a test. Many potential drivers post the questions from the test in the safety category on Yahoo! Answers and get the answers that way, instead of actually studying all the information that they are supposed to study. Will insurance companies decide that insuring Yahoo! Answers users (many of whom cheat in this way) is riskier than issuing individuals who do not have Yahoo accounts (and cannot use Yahoo! Answers to cheat on the test), and charge higher rates to Yahoo! Answers users than to individuals who do not have Yahoo accounts? How much different will the rates be?""

Volunteer with African Hope!
This 2018, we are are excited to announce our new partnership with African Hope Learning Centre (AHLC)!
Students enrolled on longer-term programs with us at Arabeya, such as the Semester Abroad Program, will be able to volunteer at AHLC as part of their study program.
3 Ways to Volunteer at AHLC:
Literacy Program
One-on-one weekly reading classes with the students, tutoring programs and provide valuable feedback to the school faculty to help improve support for the students.
Kindergarten Support
Provide support and bring energy and enthusiasm to the kindergarten-learning Centre, working with the youngest children of the school.
Unique Investments
Bring your own strengths to the school. This could involve building work, repairing computers, running sport, art and music activities, fundraising, video editing and more. There’s always something you can do to help.
How it works
Students of the Semester Abroad Program who wish to volunteer for the charity will be expected to give at least 2 hours a week of their time to AHLC by helping in various ways (as outlined abve).
They will also be able to balance their study and volunteering timetables as Arabeya will work alongside African Hope to make sure clashes are avoided.
Arabeya will also do its best to reschedule any lessons that the student misses because of commitments at African Hope. Other students will have to organise this individually.
About AHLC
African Hope Learning Centre came into existence in the Spring of 1998. The need for education for African refugee children and other members of the displaced community was great. It was, and remains to be, very difficult for refugees to access education and healthcare in Egypt. Today the school has grown to have over 450 students and over 50 staff.
The school currently has students and staff from North and South Sudan, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Cameroon, Ghana, Somalia and Nigeria. In addition to basic education, the school has a health program, which includes providing nutritious meals each day for students and staff, visits from volunteer medical professionals and classes on health topics.
The school runs out of a single villa and has two shifts each day to accommodate the students. To try and encourage a better learning environment, they capped their classes at a maximum of 25 in each class. Sadly, this has meant that their waiting list grows increasingly longer. The need remains very great in the community.
African Hope aims to ensure that students have a solid foundation in basic skills so that when they return to their home countries, are resettled, or undertake further study; they are successful in their pursuits. The school relies on volunteers to help their teachers teach the curriculum at an international standard. Many of their teachers are refugees themselves and have not had the benefit of the education they now work to provide.
Eligibility
This opportunity is reserved to our Semester Abroad students and our longer-term students (3 months and over) in order to maintain volunteer continuity at the charity.
We encourage you, especially if you are longer-term student studying with us at Arabeya, to consider volunteering with African Hope. They are a wonderful organisation that does a lot to help those in real need and would benefit greatly from the help you could provide.
More information can be found by visiting their website www.africanhopelc.com or by emailing Bev at [email protected].
