Hello, so I was just reading your Zayn critique and there is just a small thing I need to correct because it's bothering me: Zayn does all or most of his backing vocals. He spends a lot of time in the studio layering vocals, etc. I know it probably doesn't matter to you, just wanted to point it out.

So this just opened a can of worms for me, that's kinda fascinating, because I find everything about this sort of thing so entertaining.

I know I'm probably too much of a nerd and the only one who cares, but, so I'm putting this under a cut

Anyway, Zayn is only credited for background vocals in 1 song in 1 album. MoM and IF have other people credited for background vocals, while Zayn doesn't have credit in any song.

He does have credit for "vocals" in MoM, just not background vocals specifically:

For IF he's not in the personnel at all, not even with lead vocals

NIL is pretty vague and barely has any credit

In RUTS he's credited for background vocals in Stardust and lead vocals in the others

That's why I said what I said. I don't own Zayn's albums to check them myself, but Wikipedia generally does a good job of transcribing all the liner notes to that portion of each album's page, so I trusted it.

Now, the thing is, I know that Harry did all his background vocals for every song except TPWK, and I know on Wikipedia, he's credited for every song on his first two albums, but he's not credited for any in Harry's House, despite the fact that I KNOW he's in there because, well, the isolated backing vocals are available and that's his voice:

I'm sorry, this is endlessly entertaining to me. I never even thought about this before. So, I do own Harry's albums, so I checked them, to see what the credits looked like

For HS1, Harry is credited for "Vocals" and then "Background vocals"

On Fine Line, "vocals" aren't credited on any song, except Sunflower Vol. 6. (Harry is credited), and TPWK, where Lucius is credited. All the other songs have Harry (or Harry and someone else) as "background vocals". I presume Sunflower is a mistake and it was meant to be "background vocals".

In Harry's House, all songs have credit to vocals by Harry and most have no credit to background vocals, except a handful that give credit to Tyler Johnson (one of Harry's producers) and Alayna and India, who are the girls behind Harry at Jingle Bell Ball 2020

So, my guess is that they simply omitted the "vocals" bit in Fine Line because it was assumed he sang them, and just clarified who did backing vocals (mostly him, sometimes other people too). But with Harry's House, they decided to just put together vocals + backing vocals, like, it's all the same thing, boom. Except when someone additional is singing.

Anyway, so I have no idea what kind of convention Zayn uses for his personnel, and I don't have access to his physical albums to check.

If you say that he does them, then... okay. I suppose? I can't exactly check, unless I start hunting down the vocal stems for every song of his (which I am not gonna do). If I had to guess, given the conventions I see that exist, I think it's definitely possible that you're right and he's doing backing vocals in his first three albums.

Presumably in MoM they just used the HsH mode and put vocals + backing vocals together + whoever else was doing background vocals. In IF he's not credited for any vocals and he's obviously singing, so who knows what convention they used, but he is singing that so... In NIL nobody is credited for vocals so lol.

Now, in RUTS, it's strange that he's credited for 1 song on backing vocals and the others in lead vocals. I think that's a pretty weird distinction to make if he just does all the vocals in every song, especially since he was never credited for backing vocals before. So unless there's a specific reason for this, I do think it's more likely that he didn't do them.

It's also possible that he's only credited with backing vocals in that song because there's someone else credited in it (Sean Douglas), so they clarified. I think it's not super likely that's the case?

But while I find the conventions of crediting interesting, I don't find the specifics of what Zayn does and doesn't sing particularly enthralling. If you say he does, then sure.

He still has not played even the triangle in one of his FOUR own albums.
