Children’s Book Author Stories Elizabeth Gerlach - Ben’s Adventures

A few years ago, I never thought I would be a children’s book author. Back then, I was in a marketing director role for a company I had worked for close to 15 years. But my life has taken several dramatic turns the past few years to lead me to this point today.

My second book in the Ben’s Adventures series is currently being illustrated. It’s about a young brother who uses a wheelchair. He loves life. He loves his friends. He loves his family. And loves to create fun adventures from ordinary everyday situations.

The series is inspired by my son Benjamin who passed away in 2016 just before his 4th birthday. He had cerebral palsy and epilepsy. And was a triplet. He had daily challenges but continued to smile and laugh every single day.

I wanted to develop the Ben’s Adventures children’s book series simply because I wanted to tell his story. In picture books, I wanted to show a child with a disability who was enjoying his life … someone who was relatable, who simply loved doing ‘kid things’, and who could have meaningful relationships and experiences. The 1st book published in May 2018. The 2nd book is currently being illustrated but is available for preorder on Kickstarter. Ben’s Adventures are based on our experiences as a family.

My hope is kids with a disability will be able to see themselves in these books. AND, I hope the books can in turn introduce the concept of disability to typical kids who have limited experience here, making disability less scary and more normal.

In addition, my husband and I established the Ben Smiles Memorial Foundation and give adaptive toys and devices to kids with motor challenges.
