There's a certain type of grief only immortals are really privy to.

Sure, there's the jarring reality of living longer than everyone you will ever love, but what about being the only one who will ever remember them?

They meant nothing to the world and will always mean nothing, but to the immortal? They were the world. They were everything. They were love, sadness, grief, joy. They were life itself and now they're nothing. Less than nothing.

An immortal is simply a record of all they have loved, all that is lost to the world.

Whumpee was on the edge of unconsciousness. Whumper always kept them that way with whatever drug Whumper kept injecting. Every time Whumpee felt like they were regaining their faculties, Whumper cooed in their ear, kissed down their neck, and stabbed a needle into their arm.

"Oh darling, you are such a fighter," Whumper said one day as they stroked Whumpee's cheek. "I do so love that about you."

Whumpee wished they could fight back. Or they wished Whumper would just knock them out. They hated being awake for what Whumper did after the kissing. After the touching. They hated being awake and aware of every thrust of Whumper's body, every move Whumper made with them. They just wanted to disappear in those moments.

Tears leaked from the corner of Whumpee's eyes as Whumper kissed down their neck. They had been thinking about someone else's kisses. Someone else's touch. Caretaker. They loved when Caretaker kissed them, held the, and was with them. They couldn't help but think of Caretaker as Whumper touched them. If they had to be awake, maybe they could disappear somewhere in their mind. "C-Caretaker," they whispered as they screwed their eyes shut. They couldn't help themself.

"Oh darling," Whumper smiled down at Whumpee, "forget about them. They've certainly forgotten about you."

Whumpee screwed their eyes shut. "N-No." Caretaker would never forget them.

"It's only you and me now, darling. And I'm going to enjoy every moment of it." Whumper leaned down and whispered the last in Whumpee's ear, nipping at the shell of Whumpee's ear. "And maybe you will, too."

So I've seen a lot of 'Hop actively dislikes and distrusts Steve', 'Hop tolerates Steve because he's useful during UD shenanigans but doesn't like him', and the big swing to 'Hop has adopted Steve as his own and treats him the same/almost the same as he does El'

BUT, I present:

Hop pseudo adopts Steve because when he and Owens were trying to get the Harringtons to make any decisions about their teenager who saw some sketchy shit and may need government testing they legally gave Hop the rights to act in loco parentis and he takes that seriously because he doesn't want another Will Byers and he's pretty sure the Harrington kid has a concussion.

Hop who stays involved just enough in Steve's life season 1-3 that we the audience see Steve is getting attached. But Hop just sees an annoying kid who won't leave him alone when he's trying to deal with a rebellious psychic and her insane little friends and keeps asking stupid questions about highschool romance and teenage rivalry drama. Knows Joyce Byers doesn't like the kid but won't give a lot of reason why but he's mostly learned to trust that woman's judgement about people. Still gets him the job at Scoops when the kid's dad makes a stink about college and tells him if he survives a few months there he'll consider bringing him on the force, makes sense to keep him close and in a position to help should shit hit the fan again.

Hop who doesn't get it when Steve is one of the most relieved when he 'comes back to life' after Joyce and Murray bring him back from Russia. When Steve introduces him as "My Hop," (something he'd taken to calling him just before season 2 shenanigans) to his sarcastic, fidgety little friend like it means something. The girl, Robin, looks between the two of them and gets this sad look on her face for a second before smiling and shaking his hand and saying something about "Dingus has told me all about you".

Hop who complains to Murray one of the times The Party and assorted teens and adults are over at his renovated and expanded cabin (courtesy of Owens and shady government organizations recognizing these people are worth investing in, heavily if omens are to be believed) when the bald annoyance asks about what's up on there. Complains about having annoying teenagers who have nothing better to do but pester him legally put under his supervision cause their parents can't be assed to care and are spoiled little shits who are slightly more bearable versions of said parents cause he can stand toe to toe with one of those monsters they faced and the kids kind of listen to him. Complains about barely being able to breathe cause of regular visits and check-ins like Hop was still responsible for him. Says at least the extra hands are useful around the cabin what with the still healing up and El pacing herself after the showdown with Creel and still trying to find Max and the Byers not quite moved back to Hawkins yet.

Hop who doesn't realize that Steve hears every word cause he had gone looking for the older man when he disappeared for more than a few minutes, when he couldn't see him to make sure he was here and safe and alive. Steve who thought Hop actually had come to care for him in his own gruff way and had confessed to Robin that in a lot of ways the way Hop has taken care of him makes him the closest thing to the father figure he's always wanted but never thought he'd get to have. Steve who hears Murray hum and recollect a visit from Nancy and Jonathan where their romance officially started (he vaguely knows about the visit, didn't realize that's what happened, didn't realize she couldn't be bothered to even do the decent/considerate thing before moving on to something better) because it seemed it was a pattern he was seeing 'people liked Steve, but people didn't love Steve'.

Hop who hears a choked sound like someone taking a claw to the gut and turns to see Harrington. Steve Harrington his bandages just peeking out from the collar of his shirt and the opening of his sleeves. (He never did get the stories behind those, too busy being fussed over and being told about the kids and how they were doing as Harrington played babysitter) Steve Harrington a kid who went through hell and still managed to smile and laugh and stand tall and unyielding looking at him with a blank face his eyes misty and his shoulders starting to curl in on himself before he clears his throat, chokes out that he just wanted to make sure Hop was alright but looks like Murray had everything under control. He'd go now, get out of his hair, let him rest, let him breathe. Steve Harrington who walks away with purpose like a man on a mission and doesn't acknowledge the kids calling out asking if he's alright, make sure he has his walkie talkie on him.

Hop, who realizes maybe he left behind two kids who missed (needed) him. Who wonders who took care of Harrington's paperwork when he was concussed and sedated because he was bleeding out and feverish from infection and Hop was busy at the cabin reveling in the comfort and warmth of his daughter and the woman he loved and her two sons who were fast becoming like his own. Hop, who realizes too late that maybe if he'd given the kid half a chance he could have had 3 sons to sit with him and his daughter and the woman he loved as they basked in surviving another end-of-the-world. Hop who has spent years barely giving a damn about Steve Harrington and realizes that he's no better than the kid's own parents.

I’ve seen the two characters meet up for a date, one has a bit of the sniffles thing a few times now, but consider

Two characters meet up for a date, but both have a bit of something going on. Perhaps already caught the others’ cold before symptoms even began? Perhaps allergy season is kicking both their ass?

Perhaps they both just laugh and agree to just go home to take care of each other? Maybe this would even be the first time staying at the others house?

Whump that is about change. Whump that is about acceptance. Whump that is about adapting to loss. Whump where there is no rehabilitation, no getting back what’s gone. Sometimes things happen and there is no going back, there is no getting better. Sometimes the person that comes out the other side is different and they will never be the same again. Sometimes you need to grapple with the reality that most people don’t bounce back from traumatic brain injuries, from severe burns, from lost limbs and are their old selves ever again.

Whump that is about change, with no going back, and how the world won’t end because of it.

Thinking. Abt this but with Bones. Like. Post-Tholian Web? Post-Mirror Mirror?

For AOS, could be after Into Darkness and/or Beyond.

A Bones who's just. So anxious. So stressed. So overwhelmed that it starts taking a toll on his health. Maybe he doesn't even realise - or maybe he does and tries his best to push through it until it knocks him on his ass. Kind of in the vein of "You don't actually know how tired you are until you stop. And then you just physically cannot start again." It becomes his new baseline, a problem that just brews and storms in the distance.

And he just carries on. And keeps going and going and going until one day he realises that 'Oh fuck, I'm not okay' and has about 5 seconds of warning before he straight up collapses, doesn't matter if it's on the bridge, in the madbay, on a planet - he's going down. (Maybe a repeat of Tholian Web where he just straight up faints into Spock's arms? Full whammy, why not)

Maybe it's a high-tension situation getting resolved that does it. The pure relief of it reminds him of how tired he is. How tired he's been for a while. His body sees that momentary rest and goes "More of that, please. And I'm not asking."

And he's so rendered by it that he doesn't grumble about being coddled like he normally would when he wakes up. He knows not to fuck with the medbay staff - they're just as firm as he is on recovery, and that's not by accident - and he knows that Spock and Kirk will be hovering, because they see any problem as something they, too, should shoulder the burden of.

...And because they're some of the most protective people in the damned universe. And that goes for pretty much all the people on board the Enterprise.

In some scenarios, it's just a case of letting his body and mind rest properly. In others, there's a lot more recovery involved than anyone initially expects. Luckily for him, he has a found family who are determined to be there with him at every step. It just takes a couple reminders, every once in a while.

Whumpees who display appeasement or avoidance or incessantly apologizing or fleeing when they think someone might be upset with them

Whumpees who are afraid of the punishment they've become accustomed to

Whumpees who recreate lesser punishments to reassure themselves that they will not get the worst option

Whumpees who yell and berate themselves loudly when they make a mistake because in their mind, as long as there is yelling, the consequences end there

Whumpees who inflict small violences on themselves, hitting and pulling so that their caretaker won't have to

Whumpees who hide all the knives/potential instruments of torture if they suspect someone will be angry when they come home

Whumpees who take the initiative to try to influence or control how people respond to them and what they do

Whumpees who push boundaries, who test the waters by doing things that the whumper would have punished them for

Whumpees who keep pushing, for whom life becomes about doing the most terrifying thing they can think of just to see if no one will hurt them for it

Whumpees who do this to the point of self-detriment because their concept of what constitutes dangerous behavior is completely fucked

Whumpees who are people thrust into a world with rules they no longer know with people whom they can no longer read

Whumpees whose stories are about them and their journey into that world, not about their caretaker's shock and horror at their condition

Upon further inspection actually it is absolutely without a doubt comical that this sudden interest and borderline (I say this as if it’s not already crossed the line) obsession of Bucky Barnes has just NOW hit after 14 years…….. Me, a long-time marvel fan, just NOWWWWW getting on the bucky Barnes train……………. I now need to read every fic there is about this man and every comic there has ever been or will be

This just goes to show that blorbos are timeless, free from the constraints of time and space, only existing in the fabric of horniness and the intense burning need to relentlessly dissect characters that intrigue you in just the slightest way
