Duke Riley and Mel Chin, artists behind #MTAArts projects in Queens and Manhattan, are two of the more than 30 artists and designers collaborating with Times Square Arts, Poster House & For Freedoms to share their messages of hope, gratitude and public safety. "Messages for the City" is on view in Times Square, public health clinics, food pantries, community centers, and on LinkNYC kiosks across all five boroughs of NYC.

Pictured: Duke Riley's "Thank You to Health Care Workers". Riley's faceted glass project "Be Good or Be Gone" (2011) is permanently installed at Beach 98th Street (A) station in Rockaway Beach. Mel Chin's interactive installation "Signal" (1997) is located at the Broadway-Lafayette/Bleecker Street (B,D,F,M) station in Manhattan.

Reposted @forfreedoms Artist and activist #MichelleBrowder’s "Mothers of Gynecology" in Montgomery, Alabama reclaims the history of the enslaved Black women who underwent non-anesthetized medical experimentation by Dr. James Marion Sims in the late 1840s.

Once celebrated as the "father of gynecology," Sims performed excruciating and repeated experimentation on enslaved Black women. He justified these experiments through the belief that Black people didn’t feel as much pain as white people (a racist belief which still impacts medical treatment for Black people today).

Browder's monument honors the life of three enslaved women whose names were recorded in Sims’ documentation of his experiments: Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy. The identities of other enslaved women who suffered under Sims are still unknown.

I love exploring New York City on foot. Even with a plethora of taxis and trains to get you where you want to go, it’s only in New York that you can cross a bridge over the Gowanus Canal and witness a pop-up recreation of a nineteenth-century abolitionist movement that the group @wideawakes organized.
